When the guys go to Tommy’s Moms house. The studio wanted to cut the scene entirely, Marty left it in the movie. The test audience understood the scene and it’s actually a scene that viewers generally laugh about. His overbearing Mom forces them to stay and have a late snack / meal. They just want a knife to stab Billy Batts and bury him far away. Contrast that to how Karen’s Mom would react to them showing up at her house at zero dark thirty. 😂 She would raise the ire of Tommy and he’d probably want to put her in the trunk with Batts. One Mom is simply over the top in her love for her son, the other is nowhere near as warm in her emotions towards her daughter and son in law.

Little did we know how versatile an actor Joe Pesci was at the time of Lethal Weapon 2. The guy was able to go back and forth between violence and comedy easily. Lethal Weapon 2, Goodfellas, Home Alone, My Cousin Vinny, Home Alone 2, Casino. Except for Casino (1995), all these movies with Pesci were released from 1989-1992. Incredible streak of classic films.

To this very day I believe and feel that Martin Scorsese should have taken the Oscar for BEST Director for Goodfellas, this movie is perfection! I've watched it over two hundred times by now and yes it's no wonder Joe Pesci won his Oscar 'Best Supporting' he was phenomenal per his norm, from 'Home Alone' and sheer humour to his psycho 'turn' in Goodfellas. The Spider scene was one that absolutely happened. The kid was just a neighborhood teen who worked as a gofer for the crew, just as Henry had, Tommy as well. You can probably find it on TH-cam where Howard Stern was talking to Henry Hill when Spider's (the real one) sister called into the show and started laying into Henry Hill. He knew here too, although hadn't seen her in many years. This is when Henry is all spooked up on alcohol and drugs and not long for the world. But she starts screaming at him: you piece of shiz, you murdered my little brother who never did anything but look up to you scumbags ..... Henry was seemingly aghast that she was even upset with him. He was like ... ME? What are you talking about? That was Tommy, I didn't shoot the kid, I liked him. Tommy did it. All I did was help bury him." ... Can you even imagine that kinda mindset? She said to Howard that Tommy ( Tommy DeSimone) actually came to their family home a few weeks after Spider vanished into thin air, or thick dirt, and told Spider's mother that he would do all he could to help locate her son, and he gave her $500 and said "I hope this helps". These guys were absolute scum, pure trash.

In that scene, I remember watching an interview with him and how angry he was because he said, his mother was sick and she had died while shooting that scene…it had to be hard, to not be there for his mom, but as an actor, he captured all his real life emotions, in that scene!
And to hear the guy shoot his mouth off, in front of his buddies, angered him even more and he actually and accidentally broke the guy’s nose with the butt of the gun when he pistol whipped him. It was great acting, but in the interview, you could tell, it wasn’t just acting…it was raw emotions.

Everything from casting, dialogue, music and voiceovers and performances by all…and how it’s shot. It’s got a ‘fly on the wall vibe’ for me. The camera follows a lot, makes me feel like I’m there! But that’s great because I feel like I’m living and seeing it all with them.

Why would anyone want to cut the dinner scene with Tommy's mom? It's one of the best scenes in the entire movie. It's a great depiction of how Tommy and Jimmy could be so happy and cavalier after just committing a murder, having fun and cracking jokes over dinner while their car is parked right outside with (what they believe is) a fresh corpse in the trunk. It's a perfect demonstration of how different the two of them were compared to normal people (and an excellent demonstration of how while Henry was a member of the Mafia he was nowhere near the level of sociopath that the others were).

Goodfellas clearly should have won best picture Oscar in 1991, hands down. It seems like a no-brainer now, but prior to the Oscars, it was getting very little attention. "Dances with Wolves" was the film getting the most buzz. With its grand scale, historical backdrop, and a powerful social message that seemed timely, it fit the archetype for films that Oscar voters tended to favor. I think for many people "The Godfather" and its sequel were still seen as somehow the be all end all of that genre. I think it took some time for people - and certainly Oscar voters - to wrap their heads around Martin Scorsese's less romantic view of life in the mafia. On Oscar night only Joe Pesci's unforgettable performance as Tommy DeVito brought home the gold that night for the film. It surely deserved more - Best Picture and Best Director at the very least. Time, though, has brought the acclaim and recognition that Scorsese's "Goodfellas" deserves as one of the true masterpieces of cinema and storytelling.

While not exact, the metaphor and real life event are visceral, and palpable.
Such genius lives on far longer than a fleeting award.
Scorsese, Kubrick, Stone, are all genius in bringing the art to us.

I was a criminal investigator in a Seattle area law enforcement agency back in the mid '80s when we learned that Henry Hill, under another name of course, was one of our new residents. We only found out after Henry got caught early one morning crawling out of a small local mini-mart through a broken window with a couple of bottles of wine in hand. Apparently he didn't know about the alarm. The next day we got to meet some nice federal folks who only then informed us who he was. Even though he was in the witness protection program Henry loved to regale everybody at a local lounge as to his exploits and eventually after our local narcotics task force nailed him and a few others on a cocaine deal the feds found him a new place to live. Ray was a lot better looking than Henry BTW... 😅

Pay close attention to that tracking shot in the kitchen of the Copa Cabana. As soon as they walk into the kitchen, Henry and Karen take a left and walk amongst refrigerators, prep tables and the like, taking three more rights before taking a left. This was done to provide the illusion that the kitchen was a labyrinth that Henry and Karen had to navigate to get to their front-row seats. Actually, if they had taken a right when they initially entered the kitchen, instead of that first left, they would have gone straight into the club's main room. But, of course, we wouldn't have gotten that iconic tracking shot.

I think I saw Goodfellas when I was abt 10 with my Dad. I loved it! I tht it was exciting! I wanted to be a Gangster! But I wasn't a terrible kid so i wanted to be a fair Gangster. Lol! Later I wld run with some rough crews and prone to violence. My Grandpa was a gangster type and my Dad was pretty bad news so I guess that made me prone to my ways. I was always impressed with tough guys, and I guess lived by a certain code that wasn't the norm. But I cldnt be a Mafioso, I wasnt a bully, cldnt kill my friends or hurt anybody unless they deserved it. I was pretty crazy, but not sadistic, psychopathic, nor cld I ever put any organization before my Family like LA Cosa Nostra asks of their members. But a hell of a movie! I'm glad I saw it came out the time it did. Kids these days can't understand the power and philosophy of the movie. Favorite scene was when Jimmy (Robert DeNiro) is standing against the bar smoking with a cold stare contemplating the murder of Morry with the song Inagotadavita playing.
