Every time I hear “Watermelon in Easter Hay”, I get goosebumps. Some of the best guitar work of all time and any guitarist. Frank Zappa is such an amazing guitarist, musician, composer, artist, and philanthropist. He is greatly missed.
Bro, Zappa is a rabbit hole. His compositions, his musicians and their abilities are beyond compare. He was prolific af, and once you delve into his stuff, it's infectious. His absolute best stuff is the live recordings, though. That's where he and his band shines! There's a HUGE catalog of recordings called "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore" that is absolutely mind blowing!
People that tell him what to react to are always giving him bad information. I find myself thinking that he needs to consult with someone who knows the music before taking on these recommendations.
That song was never meant to be listened to without going directly into the next song. You can't chop up albums like that in the 70s. They weren't making singles.

Quite a few awesome players cycled through his band including George Duke, Adrian Belew, Steve Vai, Warren Cuccurullo, Terry Bozio, Dale Bozio, Patrick O'Hearn, Chuck Wild (WC, TB, DB, PO'H, & CW left and formed the New Wave band Missing Persons), Brecker Brothers, Aynsley Dunbar, Lowell George (Little Feet), Eddie Jobson, Jean-Luc Ponty, Chester Thompson, Ian Underwood, Ruth Underwood, Chad Wackerman, Johnny "Guitar" Watson and many many others. Guest appearances included Jack Bruce (played bass on this), Tina Turner, Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Sting, Linda Ronstadt, Terry Gilliam (of Monty Python), and Don Pardo (famous announcer of SNL & others). I'm leaving out many, many others including some core band members. Frank was a notorious perfectionist. You had to have serious chops to play with Frank. When I was in high school there was a girl who drove a customized, hot pink convertible VW Beetle around Waterford, Michigan. White shag and mohair interior and a bangin' stereo system kickin' out Dynah Moe Humm by Zappa. Never got to meet her but I'll never forget how absolutely cool and alive she looked while Zappa destroyed the collective calm as she sat at the intersection waiting for the light to change. Just a weird snapshot in time for me. If you're her . . . Thanks for that brief moment of perfection.

Greatest, i wanna agree but Bernstein and Gershwin and dont forget Rogers,,,,,,and due to a technicality, Stravinsky can be considered, kinda, an American composer.....and Zappa was a huge Stravinsky fan , he did love those Russian composers.....ill take them over any Austrian or German composer, yes, ill take them over the 3 Bs, maybe not Bach and his ingenius counterpoint, but there is something about the Russian composers that hits me harder than any other composers

That really changed my perspective on what Frank did musically.
@@MattKrogmeier im there with you, trust me, im a huge zappa freak, i love his instrumentals, the fact that when he was a kid his parents asked what he wanted for his bday and he said to make a long distance phone call to Varese speaks volumes about how advanced he was....that Slonimsky after reading thru some of Zappa's scores assumed he had been trained at Juilliard or another well known conservatory and was blown away when he actually met him face to face and asked where he was schooled and Frank said, the library, It blew Slonimsky’s mind that the composer whose works he had been very impressed with was self taught, he himself called Zappa an amazing composer.....the dude who literally wrote the”bible” as far as jazz musicians are concerned said that about Frank,. Tha angle i was coming from was more of where musicianship meets audience....Gershwin, Bernstein and Rogers wrote arguably the most well known and easily recognized songs of the 20th century, its not pop puke 3 chord stuff, its dense, spans many genres etc etc....for all we know, they might have been able to out Zappa Zappa, but thats not what they were trying to do....and then there is Stravinsky, the premier of the Rite of Spring ended in a riot, half the audience were absolutely mortified by what they had just heard and the other half wanted to kick their asses for not being intelligent enough to appreciate it....yeah Frank may have burnt down an opera house or two in his day, but i still think Stravinsky's riot counts as the more Rock n Roll moment in music history and Frank always said Igor and Shostakovich were huge influences on him, especially Stravinsky’s almost ADHD way of hopping from one theme/rhythm to another, i believe Zappa quoted more of Stravinskys music than any other composer in his songs....but none of that diminishes the genius of Zappa, im a foh soundguy and ive been tuning PAs to Zappas music for years, in fact St Alfonzo’s in one of the tracks i use because of the nuanced playing in the transition coming out of yellow snow and on my gig rig I have this quote from Zappa ....” You can't always write a chord ugly enough to say what you want to say, so sometimes you have to rely on a filled with whipped cream

So many kids today don't know what good music sounds like, or their parents or other family members did not introduce them to it. Even my mom loves watching your channel she had asked me if I had ever heard of you and I said that I have been watching your channel. Her first introduction was when you reacted to Poveroti I think it was. I was raised on the music she listened to plus other genre that other members of my family would listen to.
Love your channel! As a 60 something "young man" it’s great to see another "much younger man" rockin out to so many of the songs I love! There is a Frank Zappa song called "Trouble Every Day" written in 1965 or ‘66 that could have been written today as Zappa comments on the social and racial unrest back then. It’s a serious commentary on these issues and not at all like "Yellow Snow" or some of his other less serious material. If you decide to check it out
Gotta consider where he came from...His High school and mine were rivals. When we moved to the area in 1971, there were maybe 40,000 people in a 2000 square mile valley. Huge alfalfa farms, that were still going when we got there, but the turkey farms he sang about were long falling apart by that time. 60 miles to the San Fernando Valley via a two lane winding road through the San Andreas fault line. Such a strange mix of people. The farmers, LOTS of Okies, the desert rats, and then there was Edwards AFB and the aircraft mechanics building the tools of war USAF Plant 42, most of whom came up from LA, down from Seattle, into this huge patch of desert with NOTHING to do. For fun, we had to resort to things like "rat stompin' ", getting drunk and stoned, loading kids onto the hood of the car in the middle of a field at 1AM and chasing Kangaroo Rats. That, or go to the drive-in or street races. I can't begin to imagine how boring it must have been 10-15 years earlier.
Here’s the thing: Frank wasn’t a novelty artist. Yes your right that he had no filter in his music. But he himself was a talented musician who surrounded himself with equally talented musicians. His music had so much range. The first few albums with the Mothers was along the line of doo-wop. If you really want to hear his true talent, listen to any of his instrumentals like Watermelon in Easter Hay or Inca Roads. He has even made jazz and orchestral music as well.
Saw Frank get pissed at a concert in NYC Central Park and tell the crowd let an artist do their thing as they were hollering for his older songs. They kept it up and Frank stopped the show and said "Hey dumb asses I'm gonna blow you away with this guitar but that ain't about nothing"! He jammed for an hour with killer guitar improvisation! Check out Brown shoes don't make it.
The do-wop! I was listening to this at 16 years old, and earlier works of Zappa even younger. Definitely inspired me then as an artist, and his music inspired me to play the blues harp... on and on! 👍😉🎨

I actually performed once with Frank’s son Dweezil, as well as Ike Willis, who sang lead vocals on the Joe’s Garage album. They came and performed with my university jazz band for our Zappa tribute concert and it was an insane experience. Some other great Zappa songs include “Camarillo Brillo” “Cosmik Debris” “Outside Now” “Packard Goose” “Zomby Woof” and “Dinah Moe Hum”
This is the first time in my entire life that I've ever heard it stopped there... Even when it's played on the radio they play Nanook Rubs it. I've heard some play St. Alfonso's Pancake Breakfast as well, but never until now have I heard it stopped here. All the best yellow snow stuff happens in Nanook.

Don’t get caught up in his funny words and stories too much, it’s the music behind all that which makes it so good. If you want a song with words that makes a statement, listen to “I’m the Slime”. True today as the day he wrote it. My first introduction to Zappa was the live album Roxy-n-Elsewhere, highly recommend!

His son Dweasel Zappa is an incredible guitarists. He cut his first record around 12 Eddie Van Halen produced it . It wasn't a gimmie either he has talent.

I saw an interview with Frank's wife after he died and she said that he wasn't crazy about doing the comedy songs but thats what sold records and allowed him to do the compositions that he really wanted to be known for, that being said try San Berdino, Inca Roads , Zombie Woof , Montana, the list goes on and on of funny lyrics mixed with awesome musical talent . I also say that as someone sitting it a room surround by signed original Zappa family art. I’ve met Dweezil a number of times, and after a while you get a feel what what Frank and Dweezil really consider his core work. Again, good song, but maybe not the best intro to Frank’s world.

This is an old classic from the early 1970s. Zappa was insane. His music is like no one elses. How do you explain Zappa's music to somebody? They must listen to it. Thats the only way they'll know.

His two biggest "Hits" were:"rouble Comin'" from his first album 'Freak Out' (1969) a rather serious song about the troubles in Southern California from the '65 Watts Race Riots through the hippy era. What shouldn't be forgotten is "Valley Girl" from 'Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch" (1982) which was Weird Al as hell...BUT I still think it is one of the FATTEST bass riffs in Rock history! I' not kidding, I still get chills.

Guest appearances included Jack Bruce (played bass on this), Tina Turner, Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Sting, Linda Ronstadt, Terry Gilliam (of Monty Python), and Don Pardo (famous announcer of SNL & others). I'm leaving out many, many others including some core band members. Frank was a notorious perfectionist. You had to have serious chops to play with Frank. That's why so many great musicians played with him and many got their start with his band. Playing with Zappa was paying your dues! Thanks for listening!

When I was in high school there was a girl who drove a customized, hot pink convertible VW Beetle around Waterford, Michigan. White shag and mohair interior and a bangin' stereo system kickin' out Dynah Moe Humm by Zappa. Never got to meet her but I'll never forget how absolutely cool and alive she looked while Zappa destroyed the collective calm as she sat at the intersection waiting for the light to change. Just a weird snapshot in time for me. If you're her . . . Thanks for that brief moment of perfection.

Greatest, i wanna agree but Bernstein and Gershwin and dont forget Rogers,,,,,,and due to a technicality, Stravinsky can be considered, kinda, an American composer.....and Zappa was a huge Stravinsky fan , he did love those Russian composers.....ill take them over any Austrian or German composer, yes, ill take them over the 3 Bs, maybe not Bach and his ingenius counterpoint, but there is something about the Russian composers that hits me harder than any other composers
@@ericclinton7399 I had asked a musician friend one time about who would be considered a modern contemporary to the "greats" - Beethoven, Mozart, et. al....I thought perhaps someone like John Williams, but my friend said, without hesitation, FZ. That really changed my perspective on what Frank did musically.
@@MattKrogmeier im there with you, trust me, im a huge zappa freak, i love his instrumentals, the fact that when he was a kid his parents asked what he wanted for his bday and he said to make a long distance phone call to Varese speaks volumes about how advanced he was....that Slonimsky after reading thru some of Zappa's scores assumed he had been trained at Juilliard or another well known conservatory and was blown away when he actually met him face to face and asked where he was schooled and Frank said, the library, It blew Slonimsky’s mind that the composer whose works he had been very impressed with was self taught, he himself called Zappa an amazing composer.....the dude who literally wrote the”bible” as far as jazz musicians are concerned said that about Frank,. Tha angle i was coming from was more of where musicianship meets audience....Gershwin, Bernstein and Rogers wrote arguably the most well known and easily recognized songs of the 20th century, its not pop puke 3 chord stuff, its dense, spans many genres etc etc....for all we know, they might have been able to out Zappa Zappa, but thats not what they were trying to do....and then there is Stravinsky, the premier of the Rite of Spring ended in a riot, half the audience were absolutely mortified by what they had just heard and the other half wanted to kick their asses for not being intelligent enough to appreciate it....yeah Frank may have burnt down an opera house or two in his day, but i still think Stravinsky's riot counts as the more Rock n Roll moment in music history and Frank always said Igor and Shostakovich were huge influences on him, especially Stravinsky’s almost ADHD way of hopping from one theme/rhythm to another, i believe Zappa quoted more of Stravinskys music than any other composer in his songs....but none of that diminishes the genius of Zappa, im a foh soundguy and ive been tuning PAs to Zappas music for years, in fact St Alfonzo’s in one of the tracks i use because of the nuanced playing in the transition coming out of yellow snow and on my gig rig I have this quote from Zappa ....”

My 1st concert was Zappa! Mom was pregnant with me. This reminds me of my Dad. He died today. He taught me great music and I will miss him dearly.

So many kids today don't know what good music sounds like, or their parents or other family members did not introduce them to it. Even my mom loves watching your channel she had asked me if I had ever heard of you and I said that I have been watching your channel. Love your channel! As a 60 something "young man" it’s great to see another "much younger man" rockin out to so many of the songs I love! There is a Frank Zappa song called "Trouble Every Day" written in 1965 or ‘66 that could have been written today as Zappa comments on the social and racial unrest back then. It’s a serious commentary on these issues and not at all like "Yellow Snow" or some of his other less serious material. If you decide to check it out
I'm old enough to remember when his children Moon Unit and Dweezel were born. He was either a genius or a madman. Maybe both?
Gotta consider where he came from...His High school and mine were rivals. When we moved to the area in 1971, there were maybe 40,000 people in a 2000 square mile valley. Huge alfalfa farms, that were still going when we got there, but the turkey farms he sang about were long falling apart by that time. 60 miles to the San Fernando Valley via a two lane winding road through the San Andreas fault line. Such a strange mix of people. The farmers, LOTS of Okies, the desert rats, and then there was Edwards AFB and the aircraft mechanics building the tools of war USAF Plant 42, most of whom came up from LA, down from Seattle, into this huge patch of desert with NOTHING to do. For fun, we had to resort to things like "rat stompin' ", getting drunk and stoned, loading kids onto the hood of the car in the middle of a field at 1AM and chasing Kangaroo Rats. That, or go to the drive-in or street races. I can't begin to imagine how boring it must have been 10-15 years earlier.

Here’s the thing: Frank wasn’t a novelty artist. Yes your right that he had no filter in his music. But he himself was a talented musician who surrounded himself with equally talented musicians. His music had so much range. The first few albums with the Mothers was along the line of doo-wop. If you really want to hear his true talent, listen to any of his instrumentals like Watermelon in Easter Hay or Inca Roads. He has even made jazz and orchestral music as well.
People overlook his "normal" music. Willie the Pimp from the Hot Rats album is killer guitar work.
And Captain Beefheart singing lead - one of my favorite Zappa songs.
Saw Frank get pissed at a concert in NYC Central Park and tell the crowd let an artist do their thing as they were hollering for his older songs. They kept it up and Frank stopped the show and said "Hey dumb asses I'm gonna blow you away with this guitar but that ain't about nothing"! He jammed for an hour with killer guitar improvisation! Check out Brown shoes don't make it.

The do-wop! I was listening to this at 16 years old, and earlier works of Zappa even younger. Definitely inspired me then as an artist, and his music inspired me to play the blues harp... on and on!

I actually performed once with Frank’s son Dweezil, as well as Ike Willis, who sang lead vocals on the Joe’s Garage album. They came and performed with my university jazz band for our Zappa tribute concert and it was an insane experience. Some other great Zappa songs include “Camarillo Brillo” “Cosmik Debris” “Outside Now” “Packard Goose” “Zomby Woof” and “Dinah Moe Hum”
This is the first time in my entire life that I've ever heard it stopped there... Even when it's played on the radio they play Nanook Rubs it. I've heard some play St. Alfonso's Pancake Breakfast as well, but never until now have I heard it stopped here. All the best yellow snow stuff happens in Nanook.

Jamel, glad you’re giving Frank a chance. He’s an acquired taste for sure, but SERIOUSLY good music played by top notch musicians. Don’t get caught up in his funny words and stories too much, it’s the music behind all that which makes it so good. If you want a song with words that makes a statement, listen to “I’m the Slime”. True today as the day he wrote it. My first introduction to Zappa was the live album Roxy-n-Elsewhere, highly recommend!

I saw an interview with Frank's wife after he died and she said that he wasn't crazy about doing the comedy songs but thats what sold records and allowed him to do the compositions that he really wanted to be known for, that being said try San Berdino, Inca Roads , Zombie Woof , Montana, the list goes on and on of funny lyrics mixed with awesome musical talent . I love the song, but it’s not a great representation of the overall musical legacy of Zappa. That’s just my personal opinion. I also say that as someone sitting it a room surround by signed original Zappa family art. I’ve met Dweezil a number of times, and after a while you get a feel what what Frank and Dweezil really consider his core work.

This is an old classic from the early 1970s. Zappa was insane. His music is like no one elses. How do you explain Zappa's music to somebody? They must listen to it. Thats the only way they'll know.

His two biggest "Hits" were:"rouble Comin'" from his first album 'Freak Out' (1969) a rather serious song about the troubles in Southern California from the '65 Watts Race Riots through the hippy era. What shouldn't be forgotten is "Valley Girl" from 'Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch" (1982) which was Weird Al as hell...BUT I still think it is one of the FATTEST bass riffs in Rock history! I' not kidding, I still get chills.
