No doubt, great double meaning there...chess is the obvious one, but also, don't isolate yourself or surround yourself with only those like yourself...
I saw them do this song live in 1973 at the Forum in LA. The stage was decked out as a chess board. It would blink with every hit of the Base in light green squares and Black squares as they sang..move on back to squares...they would actually move to another square in the stage. It burnt a memory in my head that I still see every time I hear this! Now I am old, and when I hear this, it takes me back!

Get yourself some excellent headphones (Sennheiser) spend a few hundred. Then listen to all your old music and be amazed by all the details you notice now that you never have. I was fortunate to get some excellent headphones (Sennheiser) which cost $300 back in 1980. Still use them today for mixing music. Can’t stress enough how big a difference this makes.
Loved that too. But I think most chess players wouldn't get it either unless they had played Bughouse. It's a team chess game with four players playing in two man teams. You don't "capture for the queen to use" unless you are playing this way where you are capturing pieces specifically to hand off to your partner - and he is stalking to capture pieces for you- and everyone is doing this back and forth until only one king is captured. So eventually most of your soldiers used to be your enemy, you know? You and your opponent are one and the same, and you happened to capture A king. You are literally surounded by not yourself if you want to win, and the only thing that makes the enemy the enemy is that someone said so, and that can change by a word. This song has so many layers it's crazy.
Yes is my favorite of all groups. Their history is long and complicated and fascinating. I love their long songs. You want to sit back and groove? Close to the Edge. The whole album, all 3 songs are awesome. Keep up the good work!
"We don't just listen to the music, we FEEL it." It's a real gift to be able to revisit these songs of my youth with you, Jamel, and to see that they still hold so much magic that they give you goosebumps. So much ear candy in here! Thank you!
An unexpected and rare hit form back in the day. a band outside of the norm with outstanding harmony, a kind of medieval sound, and of all things a Mandalin supporting the strings.
Their music is so complex that it will take someone more eloquent than me to do it justice. All I can say is that my sister gave me this album for my 13th birthday and fell in love with them. Fifty four (54!!) years later I am still in love. Keep going, Jamel, we love you (a truly GOOD HUMAN!!) and are going to get you to 1,000,000!!!!! 💜💜💜
Aside from you being an AWESOME human, that is my favorite part of your (and a few other reactors) reactions. Not only do you simply enjoy great music, but, when we all know a song is about to bring the stink face, we wait with child-like anticipation for that! Best channel going. Love you, my brother!
It's like we're yelling, "boo!" at him.🙃 Which is ok. Unless the person is on the way to the bathroom. Because that's messed up. And worthy of corner time. 😁
Yes - would love to see this. Have been posting trying to get him to do Close to the Edge or Gates of Delirium; also Gentle Giant's live Features from Octopus. Maybe one day :)
that's exactly what it's about you hit the nail right on the head I was looking through the comments section to see if anybody else was going to say the same thing and I'm a big fan and I knew that part was about Chess but dealing with real life references also but it seem like you're the only one that got it LOL
"Don't surround yourself with yourself" is the line that always got me, too. I was listening to YES as a teen way back in the day. I didn't interpret it as surrounding myself with other people like me; I took it to mean that I shouldn't live in my own bubble, not learning to understand the world around me, which might be very different than the world I know. But the rest of the song made me think that it's saying most of us are pawns being controlled by "the Queen" which is the government, media, big brother, whoever.
@@rosevan7845 Sure, the literal meaning of the words describe a Chess game, but I'm pretty sure they were using Chess as a metaphor for life. Chess is often used that way.
My favorite YES album... I bought this one for a quarter on vinyl at a garage sale when I was maybe 14 years old back in the '80s. Still spin this whole LP end to end, it's all fantastic.
Jamel, your enthusiasm is infectious. Would love to sit with you and listen to some tunes. Keep going, you're a good man. Love to America 🇺🇸 from England 🇬🇧
It's 12:20 here in rural northern California and I live in the middle of nowhere and am dancing in my chair after 3 beers listening to to this and loving the "Give Peace a Chance" lyric too as much now as when I was a kid and this was playing on the radio. We can make this world so much better of we stop turning our heads away! Love you all !!
I absolutely love the way you take the positive messages from this and other songs. It's so cool that though you and I have different backgrounds, different age and upbringing, when I watch your videos I feel like we're just friends chillin out listening to music. Peace, brother!
40 years of hearing that song I never heard the peace a chance until u pointed it . Had to take off the right headphone to hear it coming out my left headphone. Wow. That trips me out that I never caught that b4
Jamal, I totally appreciate you and your insights on this old school music that I grew up with. You know how to see beauty, and appreciate it. From what you shared, you grew up in an environment that could be hostile, but you chose beauty and positivity. I think that's an ongoing choice, and no matter where you come from, you have to make that choice. Love you brother!
Love Yes's poetry. Here they're using chess as a metaphor. The Red Queen, the white and black squares, "don't surround yourself with yourself" - you can't make a move if there's no room for your piece to maneuver! :D
THIS SONG! There's a live version somewhere that just knocks me out. Saw them live about 10 years ago and nearly passed out w/bliss when they performed this song. LOVE!
I saw Yes, "In the Round" back in the spring of 1979. The stage was a roundtable that rotated slowly. Jon Anderson stood on his toes in the center, and sang into a mike suspended from overhead. It was an outstanding performance to witness and the sound was incredible. This short man, and the awesome performers he was with on that stage, were extremely uplifting to the young man I was at the time. One of my favorite concert memories.
I saw that tour with 8 close friends. We had 2nd row center at the LA Forum. And for every major solo part, the rotating stage stopped right in front of us. After more than 600+ concerts of some very cool bands, "Yes In The Round" is by far #1...THE BEST CONCERT I've ever seen!! Still to this day, my friends and I fondly reminisce about that show. I trust you well know what I mean.
I grew up listening to YES (25 now) thanks to my Dad, I like seeing people appreciate them, especially younger people. I picked them for my music class, and the other kids laughed at me, until they heard the song 👌
At 56, I'm still considered young to some YES-fans. I love seeing younger YES-fans at shows. Three generation of fans. I've seen fans come out of assisted living centers to still experience the magic of a YES-show. I've attended gatherings and YES concerts around the country, and hosted folks from around the world to see U.S. shows. Theme for my wedding, Wondrous Story.
@@anonymouslyanonymous4673 That would have been quite an experience as they were going to do half the show performing Relayer ( jazzy, and really out there-and an album I never thought I would see, ever, performed live ) Steve and "the boys" have taken me on journies I had thought I had missed out on. I am always front row for most shows now. All the guys know/remember me. Geoff Downes calls me by name, which is pretty amazing as I first saw and heard him as a Buggle on Mtv performing Video Killed the Radio Star. He had a great project with John Wetton, Icon, with three albums. He's still doing great work, album #4 coming out soon with Chris Braide, Downes Braide Association. I recommend both of those groups. I feel really sorry for musicians and artists now with Covid. Was fortunate to take my wife and kid to France and Germany last year. I have zero regrets spending all that money, considering the way the world is pretty shut down now. :-( Even took a Zepplin ride last year. Life is short. Enjoy every day!

50 years later you are moved by this music! Imagine walking home from the mall with this record and hanging with your friends in your attic smokin' a bowl and going play that again, wow! Nothing like it. The music from this time made it possible for a kid to be a good human.
I saw the " in the round" tour. All members were dressed in white, the stage and instruments all in white. The round stage turned slowly as they played. It was like looking at heaven's angels. The very best concert I ever saw and I saw everyone at least once. It was perfect.
“The game of chess is not merely an idle amusement. Several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired or strengthened by it… Life is a kind of Chess, in which we have often points to gain, and competitors or adversaries to contend with.” (Benjamin Franklin)
One of the greatest songs of all times, that just happens to have a kick-ass jam at the end. The song remains just as great from the first time I heard it to the dozens and dozens times I've heard YES preform it live, and the hundreds of times I've heard it in recorded form. One of many favorite YES-songs for me. Epic for me in so many ways. I luvyesmusic!
This the best part of the internet. I watch several reaction folks who hear a song for the first time and get to enjoy it. However, when these songs were released, it was a different time, there was no instantaneous way of learning the songs lyrics (a lot of songs have words that are undistinguishable or we heard them wrong or were in a certain mindset, etc.) and depending upon your age, awareness of your surroundings, and your maturity level the songs held different meaning throughout. That’s even true now with the reactions of folks here as the younger folks are generally just having fun, weren’t we all?, while those older and mature dig deeper into the songs. The most interesting song I have watched hundreds of reactions to is Disturbed’s cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence”. In that one, so many people related to song in so many different ways depending on their life experiences and even faith. Your reaction to this song was sweet and you shared a personal bit of your life. You know you are hearing a really great song when you can relate to it personally even if the song was written as something entirely different. And this is true about all words we speak to each other; we can never really know what might be heard because we all have different perspectives due to our experiences in life. So, gotta love your message. In our complex world, we all need good people, so satisfied. I’m on my way.

Jamal, you are one of my favorites in reaction videos. Thank you for being you! I so appreciate appreciate and respect you!
More Yes ! So much more to get to.
Their vocals are killer. That's all that can be said. Wow! Greg in TN 😀
Your interpretation about” don’t surround yourself with yourself “ was deeper than I thought. I’m still playing chess. Great analogy!
Yeah. He skipped right past chess.
if you can watch the Queen’s Gambit on Netflix, it is about chess and relationships. Incredible.
I think they mean leave behind the selfishness of yourself...you are part of the universe. Surround yourself with the universe..
Yup, the songs about a chess game. Capture for the queen to use.
So glad you took the path you did as it brought us all here on this day and time in this moment to share the music.
Amen
I LOVE being among some of Yes' biggest fans (because I am one too!)
This whole album is another masterpiece
I love it when Jamel's first look is one of, "What the heck is about to happen, here?" That's when you know he's been "captured" ...
How can anyone give this song a thumbs down? “YES” is awesome!
Even the 80's Stuff 😉
Yes has some of the most positive music out there! Please keep going with this Yes journey! So many great songs! Too many to type right now!
I'm not a religious person, but it's going to "my church" when I see/experience a YES-show.
Oh, your face at the break! It’s fun for those of us who know every note and see what’s coming.
Aside from you being an AWESOME human, that is my favorite part of your (and a few other reactors) reactions. Not only do you simply enjoy great music, but, when we all know a song is about to bring the stink face, we wait with child-like anticipation for that! Best channel going. Love you, my brother!
Loved it 5:10 when the music made him jump. Scared the crap out of him. Lol. That was priceless. Thanks!
YES!
Yesss:)
It's like we're yelling, "boo!" at him.🙃 Which is ok. Unless the person is on the way to the bathroom. Because that's messed up. And worthy of corner time. 😁
I've been listening to Yes for 40 yrs - never heard that background Lennon, i.e. give piece a chance.
Dig the Reactions from ya. Enjoy!
Same here. This music contained so much, so many layers that even after literally 100s of times listening you still get something new.
They dig into it really hard live.
OMG this was posted 2 minutes ago when I went to listen and already had 90 views. Love this; nice reaction.
Your reaction to this has brought such a big smile to my face. Love it!
If you have time for a longer one, one of my favorite songs from YES is “And You And I” (about 11 minutes) from the Close To The Edge album.
👏👏👏👏👏👏
Yes - would love to see this. Have been posting trying to get him to do Close to the Edge or Gates of Delirium; also Gentle Giant's live Features from Octopus.
Maybe one day :)
You can't go wrong with any of the 3 songs on Close to the Edge.
I second that request. "Close To The Edge" is a masterpiece.
He should just listen to the entirety of close to the edge. All three tracks are awe inspiring!
💙🎶Thank my Mama for always having music on. Yes was fresh air when they came out! 🎶💙
This song uses chess references to advise on real life.
that's exactly what it's about you hit the nail right on the head I was looking through the comments section to see if anybody else was going to say the same thing and I'm a big fan and I knew that part was about Chess but dealing with real life references also but it seem like you're the only one that got it LOL
Being an old man I grew up listening to Yes. They recorded so many great tunes. I would recommend Yours is No Disgrace. And the entire Fragile album.
i absolutely love that little guitar breakdown in the middle of that song
Where would we be without poets and musicians? Pretty dark place I would imagine.
Hard to go wrong with Yes. So much great music.."gates of delirium" come to mind.
Your personal take on what's in this song added whole new chapters of meaning for me; thanks for that, Jamel. Like a tree, the song grew new rings!
I love it when that happens!!👍🏼
"Don't surround yourself with yourself" is the line that always got me, too. I was listening to YES as a teen way back in the day. I didn't interpret it as surrounding myself with other people like me; I took it to mean that I shouldn't live in my own bubble, not learning to understand the world around me, which might be very different than the world I know. But the rest of the song made me think that it's saying most of us are pawns being controlled by "the Queen" which is the government, media, big brother, whoever.
Exactly
I always thought this was a chess game.
@@rosevan7845 Sure, the literal meaning of the words describe a Chess game, but I'm pretty sure they were using Chess as a metaphor for life. Chess is often used that way.
@@rosevan7845 This is best song about Chess that REALLY isn't about Chess. Haha.
"Heart of the Sunrise" is a MUST by them...it's by far one of their best tunes.
that symbiotic relationship between the bass and drums in that song is on another level
My fave record in H.S., born in '61. A joy to see your reaction. 🥰😍🤩
My favorite YES album... I bought this one for a quarter on vinyl at a garage sale when I was maybe 14 years old back in the '80s. Still spin this whole LP end to end, it's all fantastic.
40 years I've been listening to this great song, I never heard "give peace a change" in the background until you pointed it out.
you have to have a really good sound system to hear it......
It's really quite prominent toward the end of the song
Me too but I was always too busy singing along to pay attention
Same with me
Its from The Beatles song Give Peace A Chance I loved that song too
I took "don't surround yourself with yourself" as don't make it all about you or don't just have people around you that agree with you.
The Game of Chess.
True dat!
It’s a chess reference. Don’t box your king in with your own pieces so you can’t move out of harm’s way.
Exactly, step out of your comfort zone 😋
That's what it is. The song is about selfishness of humans...and materialism...and turning away from our fellow man.
Jamel, your enthusiasm is infectious. Would love to sit with you and listen to some tunes. Keep going, you're a good man. Love to America 🇺🇸 from England 🇬🇧
Yes! is one of my favorite concert memories~ They had the crowd whipped into a climatic frenzy cheering by the end!
😎😎😎 dancing in n.j.!
Give peace a chance
One of my favorite Yes songs is "Close to the Edge". It's another musical journey from these master songwriters. Definitely worth a listen.
Close to the Edge is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written
Jon Anderson sure can sing. This is almost 50 yrs old now. Some of the finest music ever.
And he still sounds great
My favorite by Yes. Amazing harmony and musicianship!
Stopping by for my smile. One of my favorites...the game of chess and how it relates to life.
It's always great to remember that Yes was started by Chris Squire, a bass player., That's why their songs have such great bottom end and rhythm.
The "Give peace a chance" is an homage to John Lennon and The Beatles.
The Beatles had nothing to do with it, just John and Yoko.
@@jiminut In this case, true. But the guys were fans of the Beatles as well as just John.
@@jiminut
Not "just John and Yoko". Also Tommy Smothers, Timothy Leary, Petula Clark, and Andre Perry, and more.
And 'Instant Karma'
@@luckymustard I love that video! It's like everybody who was anything back then, was there
That jump at 5:12 was exactly what I was waiting for. :)
One of my many favorite songs from “Yes” The harmonies on this & the vocals of Jon Anderson ♥️☮️♥️ Early “Yes” is the best imho ♥️♥️
I love turn of the century, and you?
The Yes Album, still in my top 10 of the greatest albums ever released.
Oh, you lucky, lucky soul!
I saw that one too. Awesome show!
I saw that tour in Chicago.
My first "real" concert.
@@sandraandmichaelfield1602 Yes, yes I do.
Sing it: don't surround yourself with yourself! 💚💚💚 That has so many meanings
@@luvyesmusici4886 i was actually supposed to see them for the first time in may but it was cancelled due to covid 😔
Enjoy every day!
thanks! I had forgotten how much I LOVED THIS SONG. Riveting sound. Wonderful lyric. Harmony on harmony. BAM! rock on.
The title of this in full I do believe is “I’ve seen all good people/Your Move” reflecting that concept of it being two songs in one.
Yes, except the other way around. Your Move comes first
Yes is such an incredible band with immense writing, arranging, and performing talent. But major shoutout to the production values of their stuff. The production techniques make the songs true powerhouses.
The cadence in the phrasing of the refrain seems to be one word to me....I'veseenallgoodpeopleturntheirheadseachdaysosatisfiedI'monmyway. Great song. A masterpiece in my opinion.
I've been listening to this song for 40 years and I've never heard "give peace a chance". Thank you Jamel!!!
The amount of modulations in this song is mind-boggling. Something current music lacks.
Current music lacks A LOT more than modulations...
but I 100% agree with you!!
50 years later you are moved by this music! Imagine walking home from the mall with this record and hanging with your friends in your attic smokin' a bowl and going play that again, wow! Nothing like it. The music from this time made it possible for a kid to be a good human.
If there is a heaven, and I get to go - the angels had BETTER sound like Jon Anderson!
Totally agree! Love him
And Joni Mitchell....
@@lisarainbow9703 Well at least they'll be trying to sound like her...no dis intended, just saying.
I saw the " in the round" tour. All members were dressed in white, the stage and instruments all in white. The round stage turned slowly as they played. It was like looking at heaven's angels. The very best concert I ever saw and I saw everyone at least once. It was perfect.
I saw them perform this live on a circular revolving stage. The lead singer wore a medieval minstrel looking outfit. It was a amazing!
At Madison Square Garden?
“The game of chess is not merely an idle amusement. Several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired or strengthened by it… Life is a kind of Chess, in which we have often points to gain, and competitors or adversaries to contend with.” (Benjamin Franklin)
Interestingly, though, I've read that the skills developed playing chess, even by grand masters, do not confer skills to other intellectual pursuits.
The Queens Gambit on Netflix is a joy for any chess players.
Ol' Benjy ended a sentence with a preposition?
One of the greatest songs of all times, that just happens to have a kick-ass jam at the end. The song remains just as great from the first time I heard it to the dozens and dozens times I've heard YES preform it live, and the hundreds of times I've heard it in recorded form. One of many favorite YES-songs for me. Epic for me in so many ways. I luvyesmusic!
Remember playing this when it was a new release by Yes back in the old days when I was a disc jokey, a gem by Yes, glad you enjoyed Jamel !
So sad I was born too late for that. I was a DJ myself but the golden days were long gone by the time I got my hands on the board.
I've seen all good people turn their heads each day
So satisfied I'm on my way
I've seen all good people turn their heads each day
So satisfied I'm on my way
