I am a 52 year-old female, and let me tell you, I LOVE Larry Bird. He is my all-time favorite player!! I am so blessed that I got to see him in real-time. My 18 year-old son was a non-believer (when he was in elementary school) until he watched a Larry Bird documentary. I miss the old days of basketball. EVERYONE was great. They played hard and they didn't bounce from team to team. Win or lose, they did it with their own teams.
By the way, the Hawks' coach was so upset with his players on the bench because they kept celebrating every time Bird scored. Man, those were good times!!
Not only was Fratello pissed, but he even fined them a few thousand dollars each for celebrating their opponent, and forced the whole team to re-watch the video over and over.
@@keef7224 He was celebrating Bird's badassery too and in some clips, that is shown. You can see that he was doing it as well. It's clearly visible. He should have fined himself. Since the players had to pay, he should have had to pay too. I have no links.

Bird was in top 1% of all people tested for hand-eye coordination. I bet Magic was also. That provided him with a big advantage over most other players.
I was blessed to be an NBA fan during the Bird era. When Larry retired from the NBA, I did too. I saw the best. His heart is what made him great

It really does. When the other team's bench is getting blown away by your shooting,, that says something.
As it turned out, those players on the Hawks bench got fined by the team for their reactions to Larry hanging 60 on them.

It is hilarious to hear the youngsters talk about players like Larry Bird and Magic Johnson and not know how GREAT they were. They think that today's NBA is great. Larry Bird would eat EVERY player in the game today alive. Today's watered down game isn't even competitive. The stats are up but that's because they have made it an all-offensive game because the players (almost all) couldn't play under the older rules. Argue if you want but true ballers know the truth.

There is no one in the current game like this. Magic was the greatest point guard I ever witnessed. Micheal is still the BEAST

I was friends with one of the Celtics players back in the early days of Bird's career. He never wanted to talk about Bird. But one day he opened up, got very serious, and said that Bird is so much better than most people realize. He stunned his teammates every day in practice. And then, with awe in his voice he said "Larry Bird is almost as good as he thinks he is."
One needs that kind of confidence to achieve at a high level. They have the rest of their lives after competition to be humble.

If you mean greatest impact: Russell; Greatest athletic talent: MJ; Most dominant: Wilt.

People don't understand how good Larry was. He may not have had the best stats of all time, but he was clutch as hell, and a warrior on the court.

And he didn't play past 15+ years...his stats would have been much higher if he did. Be amazing to see someone with his skills back in the game......I might watch it more. Used to watch the Game because of Magic and Bird....just something about those guys and those teams.

She is definitely not "discovering" Larry Bird in this video. First she just happens to call him a "legend" after only looking at the Wikipedia page. Also, some of the little things she reacts to while watching the video are not things that would stand out to someone who is so new to basketball that they don't even know Larry Bird. Then, after watching a couple minutes of the highlights she is like _"You know, I could totally be wrong about this, but it just feels like he has a special presence and he is just, like, the leader of his team. I mean I could totally be wrong, guys, but, like, that's just what it feels like to me."_

Lebron is a BEAST!!! Don't get me wrong. As far as athleticism goes, he's the best to do it! A forward who can move like a guard? That's insane!
But here where they differ. Bird had something Lebron doesn't. And it's not something you can teach. He had heart. You can't teach heart.
Bird not just had the physical gifts, he knew how to break you mentally. Talk you out of the game. And when it was clutch time, Bird CRAVED the last shot. He wanted to be the one to stick that dagger in and wouldn't have it any other way. Lebron has far too often looked too a teammate to close out the game. And he simply lacks that killer instinct needed to make opponents fear him like the feared Bird/Jordan.
Lebron is definitely top 3-5 all time. The stats say Lebron is better. But after watching the careers of both, my eye test tells a different story.

Plus, Bird and Magic's style of play and their rivalry is what made the NBA a big deal. They weren't really doing that well as a business until they came along and took the game to the next level. Then Jordan came along a few years later and made the NBA a global phenomenon.
This is what GREAT players do. They add something to the game. Change the way it's played AND enjoyed. I can't really say that Lebron added anything to the game
Thee most clutch player of all time. There will never be another Larry Joe again. He inspired all those kids that couldn’t jump well, because they saw it unfold with his play. Hustle, heart and toughness the sport lacks today. I could only image how amazing he would have been this day in age.

Bird Magic saved basketball b/cause...they LED their teams in an era when players would rather look "pretty" than win. A favorite saying in the late 70s-early 80s was, "Nothing in MY contract about winning! Ironic, too, since most of the prima donnas were calling Pistol Pete a "showboat!
Finally, they put the NBA on TV by merging "black" basketball with "white" basketball; Showtime vs. Blue collar entertainment.
In the 90's, guys like Jordan and Barkley nearly reversed that. AND, Jordan never won anything w/out Scottie Pippin.

Bird is still the best all-time! No other player had an impact on his team like Larry! The year before Larry 29 wins and single handily his rookie year 61 wins! No one can match that.
David Robinson did (No of course he's not better than Larry Bird). But in 1988-89 the Spurs won 21 games. The next year, D Robinson's rookie year, the Spurs won 56 games. He was the only major superstar addition. Also the Spurs again in Tim Duncan's rookie year went from 20 to 56 (but they "added" David Robinson again because he missed so many games the year before Duncan.)
The Celtics again also went from 24 to 66 wins but they added the Big 3 so that's a bit different.

I’ll make it simple. The NBA was DEAD in 1978-79. The Bullets and Sonics traded Championship in a bore. Bird played Magic in the NCAA Finals in 1979 and both entered the NBA together in 1979-80 and it was ON!! The NBA was on fire!!
In the 80’s, the Eastern Conference was PHYSICAL!!! They (Celtics, 76’ers, Pistons, Bulls, Knick’s & Pacers) took turns beating each other up. Research “the Jordan Rules”. While we were spoiled in LA. The Lakers reached the finals 9 times in 12 years winning 5. Lakers won 2 of 3 vs Celtics, 2 of 3 from 76’ers and 1 of 2 from Pistons. EVERY series was epic!!

I guess it was boring because the NBA had no great white basketball players that won. While he was one of the greatest, he brought white fans back to the NBA. He was the great white hope of the NBA Isaiah and Rodman were right. Bird knows it.
You forgot the great Milwaukee Bucks of that,era. Bob Lanier., Sidney Montcrief, Jumior Bridgeman, Brian Winters. If it wasn't for two people: Larry Legend and Dr. J, those Bucks would have won some titles in the 80's.
Enrique!!! STUPENDOUS COMMENT. I was angry as hell in 1987. Celtics as you mentioned were getting POUNDED BY FIRST BULLS, THEN MILW AND THEN PUSTONS. In the Eastern semis and eastern Finals we had to play 4 seed Milw and then 3 seed (but much more physical than #2 seed Atlanta) Detroit. Who did LAL have to play in corresponding western semis and finals???? 5th seed Golden State and SEVENTH SEED SEATTLE!!!! Both 2nd seed Dallas and 3rd seed Portland were playing golf AFTER FIRST ROUND UPSETS. CBS analyst Tommy Heinsohn accurately portrayed the Lakers as shiny new Jaguar cars. Celtics as beaten down bread truck with a leaky exhaust. They should have allowed Boston to play Seattle in one league semi and Lakers face Pustons in the other.

Those two were the most entertaining passers of the era. goAts at running the court like a general.

The fascinating thing about his "jersey retirement" is that it wasn't done before, after, or during halftime of a game. It was an entire retirement ceremony during the team's off night, and it was a sold-out event.
In my opinion, Larry was the greatest "all-around" player to ever play, and he spent over half of his career with a structurally damaged back injury that would have retired most players.
Also, Larry won the 3 pt contest for 3 consecutive years, 86-88. In the 88 contest, Larry didn't even take off his warm-up top as you may have noticed in the video.
Those were the only three 3point contests he entered
Not only did he win in '88 wearing his warmup, just before the contest he went into the locker room and said "I'm feeling pretty good today! Who's coming in second?"

the thing with bird is that he was an off ball dominant player. He was the perfect teammate to play with. You can be a ball hog and he'll still get his buckets, assist and rebounds. That's an extremely rare quality in players. He's the type that when he gets triple doubles, it comes natural. There's no intention involved.
I don't think there is a weakness in his game other than defending quicker players (1 on 1). He is an excellent team defender. Got a decent number of steals through anticipation. Just ask Isaiah.
Good point. He could affect the game in more ways than most players. His passing and selflessness was contagious. The Celtics fast break was a thing of beauty. The ball hardly touched the ground.
Tatum is no where near Bird but he has that trait. He can score without having to always have the ball.
The main reason I have Bird ahead of Lebron, didn't need to have the ball everytime. They need to have the others have the ball to run the play and to make them more comfortable. I also think this is the main reason why lebron can't win a chip. Now that he have a better team( Cleveland has more talent offensively but LA is more of a complete Team) in LA, he needs to learn how to play off ball. If LBJ did learns it, even Kawhi wouldn't be able to stop him, can only slow him.
He paid attention to the location of every player, on both teams, whether they had the ball or not. He had that ability to track the game just a second or two into the future. Those no-look passes weren't no look at all, it was just 2 seconds ago that he did the looking. It's not unlike how NFL plays are run. Anticipation is a huge part of the game, but in football you're running 1 or 2 plays a minute, and it's something that you've practiced a thousand times. When a player like Bird is "on," they have that same kind of anticipatory skill running the whole time, and it's all improvised. Magic did it too. Having Bird and Magic on the floor at the same time is like watching wizards dual. You can hardly believe what you're seeing. None of it should be possible, but it's right in front of your face.
It's an overused word, but in this case I stand by it: it's athletic genius.

Only argument to this is that would Bird's early life still have had an effect on him if he was born 20 years later? We can only imagine. A big part of Bird's greatness comes from his values and tragedies in his early life. Basketball was his heaven and solace.
Many younger fans think Bird just shot 3-pointers and have no idea he was one of the best passers of all time and among the most clutch players ever.

@@chrisconley8583 Basketball became popular again with the reborn rivalry between the Lakers and Celtics / Magic & Bird. While Bird and Magic got the NBA popular, Jordan took it to a whole new level. I don't think MJ rode the coattails of Bird and Magic, but simply emerged as the NBA's new superstar and helped the NBA where Bird and Magic left off (basically carrying the torch).
@DougHall While I agree that Jordan carried the torch after them, and took the NBA to new heights, he also started its downfall. I say that because, in my opinion, he started the three step trend, ball carries, palming and superstar favoritism from the refs. From Jordan on the purity of the NBA rules started downhill and have never gotten back to, or even near to, where they started. I will always love my fellow Hoosier from French Lick, Indiana...Bird is my favorite of all time but I am done with the NBA. The game is worthless anymore without the purity of Bird, Magic, their teams and the other greats of that era. R.I.P. NBA. 😥
@@Arakasi22 The purity you refer too is actually more subjective than you might think. Of course the rules have changed and the interpretation/officiating of some rules have changed but since the current version of the game is consistently enforced it is just as 'pure' a game as it ever was. Referees will never be perfect, but they are even implementing a challenge system to actually improve the 'purity' of officiating.
I think the reason you think that the refs are biased is that the top players have superior ball handling skills so they can do things like gather steps, step backs, cross-overs, etc. and they know exactly where the line between a legal dribble and a travel or other violation is and push that boundary with precision. The looser enforcement of certain rules compared to past eras has actually allowed for more advanced skills to develop.
So yes the game has changed, but I recommend giving the league a second chance after learning how it has developed. There are still great players and great teams if you just give them a chance.

Reaction videos are about the journey the create takes, and researching the subject shows true interest, which causes honest reactions. A lot of people in reaction videos often seem uninterested, closed minded, and\or more interested in how their viewers feel. I have watched this video many times. When I watched it out of my own interest, I didn't watch someone react to it. Now I like seeing people discover how talented he was. I was a fan already, but despite that I was ignorant to just how good he really was. Seeing others feel that same sense of wonder, and amazement is kind of like if you saw a ufo, and then someone else confirmed, that what you saw was real.

I’m about to turn 40. Bird was a huge part of my early education in basketball. He was absolutely amazing. The first basketball player I idolized, and arguably the most complete NBA player ever. I think it’s awesome that younger people are getting exposed to his playing. Also…the single nastiest trash talker ever.

As a 10-y/o back then, I didnt know anything about basketball. After watching my first NBA game on TV (Bucks-Celts) on Dec of '89, this no. 33 Bos dude made me want to learn to play the sport.

Imagine Larry if he never shattered his knuckle or remained uninjured throughout his years! It was quoted he was never the same after his shattered knuckle playing softball as a fill-in prior to his NBA days . . . I enjoyed no one more than watching Larry Bird . . . L E G E N D . . . G O A T . . .
I'm a huge NBA fan going back to the mid 70's with Walton in Portland, David Thompson in Denver and Havlicek in Boston. But in all the years I've watched the NBA, nothing compares to the 1980's and especially Bird's Celtics vs. Magic's Lakers. They competed at a level unmatched since and set up the league we all enjoy today. And then in the late 80's, as those 2 teams began to fade came Isiah Thomas and the Bad Boy Pistons, and later Michael Jordan's Bulls and Hakeem Olajuwon's Rockets playing against Ewing's Knicks, Reggie's Pacers, Stockton and Malone, Barkley's Suns, Payton's Sonics.
It's hard to describe to younger folks. But 1980-1998 were truly the NBA golden years. And Bird vs. Magic, Celtics vs. Lakers, East Coast vs. West Coast, Blue collar vs. Showtime.....a rivalry that will never be matched again...was the spark that started it all.

I WAS a huge NBA fan as a result of Bird and Magic. Full disclosure, I'm a New Englander. I find today's NBA unwatchable and full of over paid cry babies who can directly attribute their outrageous salaries to Bird and Magic. Without them, the league would have died in the 80s. Imagine what fools they were for actually staying with the same team throughout their careers and not always looking for a bigger salary or to move because their team may have a down year or two.
I always talk to youngsters about David “Skywalker” Thompson. I’m glad I’m not alone anymore.
