  • In this video, I demo the new robot I have built in preparation for the 2017-2108 Hydro Dynamics Challenge. This new robot is named Kevin 5.0, the fifth of a series of FLL robots designed starting from the beginning of the Animal Allies season. Kevin 5.0's design was inspired by FLL team Unlimited (TH-cam link below). Enjoy.

    Sorry if anyone is seeing ads on my videos now, that's because they've been copyright claimed by the artists of the songs I've used, and the ads are under their control. Just to be clear, I don't make anything off these videos.

    Nice and compact design! Thanks for sharing. Just a little curious what is the purpose of having two color sensors in this design. Thanks.

    • @theclueless11212
      @theclueless11212  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Huifei Rao - the two color sensors allow for many things. The most important is line squaring. Using to color sensors, the robot can align perpendicular to a line. Secondly, the robot can line follow in different positions. Using the right color sensor to line follow will put the robot in a left position, using the left color sensor will put the robot in a right position.

    Very nice build. Did you have some ideas for the use of the undercarriage gears? I had never considered that approach.

    • @theclueless11212
      @theclueless11212  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jim Stoltz - what do you mean? I have never heard of under carriage gears.

    • @jstoltz6803
      @jstoltz6803 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mindstorms Man - SWARM At 1:25 you turn the bot over and power up two black gears next to the light sensors and the drag ball.

    • @theclueless11212
      @theclueless11212  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim Stoltz - the two under carriage gears are connected to the medium motors that also power the top two gears. If I want to put the robot on top of another base for whatever purpose, I can use the under carriage gears to power the moving features of that base. For example, I could use those undercarriage gears to power the attachments on the large base I used in Animal Allies.

    One problem you may find is that the wheels you use my squish when you apply extra attachments. This may cause your robot to go different distances for one rotation.

    • @theclueless11212
      @theclueless11212  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hero clash of clans - I have found these wheels to be very reliable. Many wheels, such as the tall ones I used in my previous robots, do squish and prove to be inaccurate. Of course no wheels are perfect, and neither are the motors, which is why we use sensors to fill in for their inaccuracy.

    • @HAL9000Robotics
      @HAL9000Robotics 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mindstorms Man - SWARM, thanks for the quick reply, sadly the iPad would not work for us to film with, ours is junk. Where do you get your music? Is it in iTunes?

    • @theclueless11212
      @theclueless11212  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      HAL-9000 Robotics - I just use copyright free music from TH-cam, download it in an app called documents, covert to mp3, then import to iMovie. I learned this from a tutorial on TH-cam.

    • @HAL9000Robotics
      @HAL9000Robotics 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mindstorms Man - SWARM, Ok is this app in App store? or do you use the music directly from the TH-cam music library?

    • @theclueless11212
      @theclueless11212  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      HAL-9000 Robotics - yes it is on the App Store. It is just called Documents. It has a white background, and a black "D" that is peeling off in the top left corner.
      Although, you dont simply need the app to download music into imovie. You have to use the web browser in the documents app and enter a working youtube to mp3 website. This can take a while to find the first time, because many mp3 websites are scams. Then, you need to covert your video to an MP3 file, download it on to the documents app, then open the mp3 file in iMovie. I would suggest finding a tutorial on this.

    • @theclueless11212
      @theclueless11212  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can have dog gears on a box bot. The idea of dog gears is that you have an easier method to put on and take attachments.

    • @theclueless11212
      @theclueless11212  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Potterhead Otaku - well, here are some robot design tips. Try to keep the robot compact. Make sure you use all 4 motors allowed. 3 for drive, two for attachments. Use the gyro and color sensors. Put a guard to stabilize the wheels, but don't make it too big and bulky. For wheels, I would the the same wheels I am using in this video, because they are very stable, pretty thin, and provide for decent speed.

    • @theclueless11212
      @theclueless11212  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Potterhead Otaku - as for presentation, make sure to take a close looks at the rubrics for each aspect.

    • @vanessatapia2526
      @vanessatapia2526 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok thank you.

    • @theclueless11212
      @theclueless11212  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      cashewA - Yes, sometimes the gyro can be glitchy and can potentially lead to many disasters. However, if you are able to master the gyro. Initially, I had agreed with you about the wheels. Last year, I used the tall grey black wheels. Eventually, we decided they took up too much room, so we switched to the slightly less tall white wheels. The white wheels worked pretty well, but I have been told numerous times and seen in many successful robots these smaller wider wheels were more reliable. It tried them myself, and found that they had much better traction resulting in more reliable runs. The only disadvantage is the loss of speed, but it is not common when you would need the high speeds you would get from the taller wheels.

      @theclueless11212  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Soccer Storm - no you won’t get in trouble. I would be honored to see my robot in competitions, but my suggestion is to make your own robot so that you understand everything in it. Also, as the mat and mission change, it may be helpful to build your robot to adapt to the mat. I would welcome you to base your design off of mine, but my suggestion is that inspiration is as far as my robot goes.

      the top music - If you are asking how I built it, it is a long process. It requires many years of experience, understanding all the parts of the robot, and understanding what is good and what is bad.

      Yong Run - yes, I have seen it. I am a little confused about what is the robot and what are the attachments. But from what I can see, you should take advantage of the fourth motor port, and add another motor for attachments. Also, I suggest you use the gyro sensor to turn accurately and too move forward straight. Color sensors also help, so that you can follow, stop at, and align with lines.
