    Just found your online adventures here. So exciting! As a fellow cat owner (always tinkering) I applaud and admire your imagination and determination to get your new home upgraded!! And a special 'thank-you' for taking time to make and post these videos :)

    Just got recommended your channel. Great to see people who know what they are doing making videos. I was sailing a 50ft cat in a Gladstone race a few years ago that had the same square of death. I was thinking you could use a spectra loop from the dog bone to the inside of the open sheave block. This would mean if the inside block failed then the spectra loop would stop the square from collapsing. The outer block wouldn't work this way. Nice videos - thanks from a 38ft Chamberlin owner.

      Great to hear you enjoy the vids, thanks for the feedback.
      There is never an ideal situation when you are close the failure path if anything should happen.

    Aren't they all using Torlon or some similar type of bearing and races that won't rust? I don't see why they would be using any ferrous material in these components.

    The square of death, don't sheet me, Shane Paikea, nice seeing the sheeting points. Awesome head board, very clever. Are you using running back stays to keep your forestay tension ?

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, no backstays. All hanging off the main sheet.
      There are some limitations with this setup but not having backstays is a huge plus

    What are your thoughts on an electric fuller for a screecher & furling asym for ease of handling?

      What size boat? If you are a 100fter then I would say yes. On our boat it is not necessary and just another thing to maintain with the worry that if it fails we are stuck. We try to always approach things with the thought "if this goes wrong what are my options?"

      @@youngbarnacles 52’, sailed with one this summer and was silky smooth and easy to do single-handedly from the helm, but I hear you on the “one more thing to break aspect”. Thanks for the response!

    Can't find pricing of the KZ gear, is it similarly priced to the competition?

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is a bit more pricy than the off the shelf stuff in normal retail stores. This is a little bit of a down fall of KZ, they are super focused on making high quality gear and not sales distribution and advertising. The guys that distribute and service the gear are also heavily involved in the racing circles and not so much in the cruising circles so general cruisers dont hear about it.
      Where are you based? we can find the person to contact for you really easily. Other wise just send the guys at KZ an email.

      I'm in Brisbane, just in the process of getting a 52' cat designed and built. I race a boat called VX One, not quite the loads of a quick cat.

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rexmick Cool, what design are you going to go with? A 52 is a nice big boat!
      Yep, we know the VX one, raced against a few of them when they first came out. Anna and I were sailing a Magic 25 back then between all the other things we were racing.
      Being based in Brisbane get in contact with the lads directly at KZ, they are cool guys and very clever.

      @@youngbarnacles it is a design based on my own ideas, Paul Bury in Melbourne is doing the design and detailing.

      @@youngbarnacles Just a stupid idea (I have lots)... have you and/or your wife considered taking on the cruising market for KZ? Lots of people in this market will pay for reliability and best possible materials. Trick is keeping it simple for both KZ and clients... making it worth it for KZ to take on a volume market that can be noisy and whiny... by shielding all that from them. You take whatever % of sales.

    I don't understand why people buy stuff that just isn't fit for purpose. as the ole saying goes, a poor man pays twice.

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That old saying is so true! Unfortunately so many are unaware or get bad advice as to what might be needed, the worst is glossy brochures and sales people!
