Overnight At The Off-Grid Cabin | Getting Ready For Syrup Season

- It's winter at the cabin but it's starting to feel like spring! Syrup season is just around the corner and we came up to the cabin to get an inventory of what we need to start maple syrup.
At home, the wood stove is our main source of heat and if you've been to the channel before, you know that our house is 123 years old and has no insulation. We've burned through almost 6 bush cords of wood this season so we decided to start cutting up some maple for next winter.
We also cooked up some steak and potatoes for dinner and were interrupted by a mouse!
We are really looking forward to the syrup season and spending a lot more time at the cabin in the next month!
We hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

A helpful tip I learned when falling trees in our neck of the woods, when you perceive tension on a tree that is suspended by both ends resting on the ground or another object, and nothing supporting the tree at the center, it will undoubtedly pinch your chainsaw once you get about half way through the log as the weight of the log caves in on itself due to the void made by the chainsaw cut. I'll make a small cut 2-3" deep on top side of the log and then line up and cut upwards from the underneath side towards the small cut. This allows the tree to cut in 2 without pinching your chainsaw. Of course be careful about kickback, important to have a sharp chain and safety gear but this makes life MUCH easier! Stihl makes a nice safety gear kit with a helmet and chaps in a cinch bag, highly recommend picking that up, the chaps have saved me from injury many times. I wish we could harvest maple syrup where we live.
Thanks for the tip! Much appreciated.
Hi from Puerto Rico! I love your videos. Here, in Puerto Rico, everything is so different. Here is a tropical island and six months in the year we have the risks to be hit by tropical storms or hurricanes. I'm learning from you in different ways to preserve foods, make bread, etc. It really incredible the difference in food preparation from our countries.
English is our second language! The island is an American territory, but we are completely different. I've been seeing your videos for months, but not leaving comments. I have a huge admiration for your lifestyle!
Well thank you so much for that! Puerto Rico weather sounds much nicer than here! Glad to hear you are learning about bread and food preparation!
Make precious memories with your beautiful family in that cabin. Enjoy. Have fun.
Thank you! 😀
Sugar shack plans needed! Love the channel.
That’s definitely on our list!
Hi wood warriors ! Nice clip. Cant wait to see the tree tapping and evaporating. I really look forward to yours...............m
Lots of syrup videos to come!
Have fun with the Maple syrup this year! I'm taking this year off. But we'll be watching you guys! Nice video, Jeff I can't tell you how many times I've pinched the chainsaw bar.
We are excited for syrup season too!
greetings from Niagara, ON. 😁
my brothers and i are using a spreadsheet, the GPS on our phones to capture and map data to help us with our annual syrup making.
We're in our 5th season, and still learning. we're on the look out for an app that might simplify the process.
we've inherited 125 acres from our father, and his equipment for making syrup.
we're having fun with it.
also, make yourselves a supply of wedges to prevent pinching. wedges also available any chainsaw supply.
finally, with the EMS background, invest in eye and hearing protection when using the chainsaw as must wear gear.
Sounds like you have a good syrup set up!
I put up 10 to 15 cord a year of Douglas Fir out here in BC...when ground bucking like that drive a wedge in behind your bar as you go...no more pinch.
We will give that a try!
I’m almost through six cords of firewood so far, and it’s been a mild winter here in Maine. My primary source of heat is wood and that split between my house and my workshop.
A cord of wood is going for three $375-$400 a cord. At that rate I think the local wood supplier will run themselves out of business because people could probably heat their houses cheaper with oil.
I’m planning on using 10 cords of wood a winter starting next year. I’ll probably begin splitting my own wood in the spring time.
Wood heat is the best! That price per cord is roughly what it costs here too. We are also planning on splitting about 10 cords for next winter too!
Casal lindo!
Awesome time up at the cabin ! Can't wait for the syrup to run :)) & yes spare saw when cutting firewood always handy , Good to see you planning for next years firewood :)
We usually have a spare one, poor planning on our part this time! 🪵
Hello from Idaho. That's a nice pile of wood on the porch! Good thumbnail.
Thanks! 😀
Can't wait to see the videos on your tapping and making syrup.
Lots of those videos to come !
Tudo lindo , o lugar , a casa e o homem também e muito lindo!!!
Love the Canada Post coat!!
I missed one when i was removing them...
Just found your channel and subbed. This is JUST me talking, and that is when I have a good log that size, I will undercut at least a 1/3rd to almost half of the diameter. Works for me. I know exactly where you were on yours getting stuck. Been there done that!!! I don't know about you, but I knew better and still got mine stuck.LOL Enjoy your videos!! Keep it up. Cheers from the deep South, USA
Glad you found us and are enjoying the videos! We will have to try your idea on the next tree 🪵
We went through 5 bush cord. I thought it would be less as it really hasn't been a freezing cold winter here. I believe we are just south of your cabin.
What a silly mouse!!
It hasn’t been freezing cold here either! It’s been a mild winter
I was watching ur first cut and I said stop that under tension, then the next frame the saw was stuck and I was like oops, nevermind. Lol
I love that cabin. Awsome channel!
Haha yes a bit of a mistake there but we got the saw out!
@@living.differentWith all respect my friend, your axe would have made a perfect wedge on the side you first started cutting. Smack the axe in as far as you can with a nearby branch and you'll open the log enough to finish your cut. Please my friend there is always an easier way! Love your vids and God bless you all! ❤️🙏🏼
Great times! 🖐😎👍
Yes it was!
A wedge? Do you have one? Buy one! A wedge. Simple Fix.
Great idea! Thanks for the tip!
Hearing protection too!!
Wearing AirPods with the noise cancellation turned on!
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!
Great video. Probably time to set some traps. I love your dogs!
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Ceramic stove top cleaner works great on wood stove glass
So does newspaper 🙂
Another Awesome video!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi. From Alabama love your dogs and your video 👏💪😍
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love it 😊
So do we!
Enjoy your drone vids! Your dogs are so calm. Maybe its breeding or maybe they just get a lot of exercise. What is your take?
We did a lot of training with them 🙂
You could do with a can of spray marker & put numbers on each tree as you go or write the numbers on those ribbons 🤔 just an idea
Yes we definitely should have found a better way to count! Haha
Look into a Rocket Mass Heater, you will cut your wood use by 3/4s
We don't mind it as is because we don't live here full time, but thank you for the Tip!
Nice vlog
Thank you!
👍🏻👌✋️❤❤
Love the video....where are you?
Hastings country 🇨🇦
Nice setup. Why does the one dog get the odd bowl?
She needs a slow bowl, she eats too fast and chokes
Wattle and Daub?
Not this time! But we do love that place
What is the breed of your beautiful pups
They’re Dobermans 🐕
Thanks
make a wedge out of wood brother
Will do next time! Thanks for watching!
You should of counted, your ribbons, first. Another easier
We didn’t count them because we just ripped and tied until we decided we had enough haha
Mamma che scorta di legna x stufa.
Снизу заводишь лагу, поднимаешь вверх, пропил расширяется, и вынимаешь шину пилы 🙂🤷♂️
Спасибо за совет
