Making Maple Syrup At The Off Grid Cabin

  • Syrup season is well underway and with the early warm weather, we are already doing our first boil!
    We went up to the cabin for the weekend and managed to boil through almost 900L of sap. With our new evaporator set up, the process was much more efficient and saved a lot of time.
    We are only mid-season so we still have our taps out and are hoping for a second boil in the next few weeks. At the end of the weekend, we finished up with just over 20L of finished syrup and we're hoping for at least that much more!
    Stay tuned to see how the season plays out!
    We hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

    At the end of a long day, i like building a big fire and flooding the pan. Let it simmer down all night and leaves a good spot to start the next day. Saves a late night after an already long day.

    Hello from N-B here, I see you finally got yourself 2 pans for boilling, good improvement. I would highly sudjest using a refractometer instead of a thermometer and end your boiling when you are at 67% on the refractometer, beats fighting the steam coming of the boiling pot and it is more accurate.

    I find that when your warming pot can trickle a flow into the main pan you never loose the boil and is way less labor intensive...even if you just trickle a cold flow of sap into your pan it wont kill the boil if slow enough

    Wow, that was a marathon! I didn’t realise just how much syrup evaporates during the cooking process. It does explain why it’s so expensive to buy, I’m in England and it’s a real treat whenever I can either find it or afford it! A long process, but as a consumer I do appreciate all the effort you put into the finished product!❤

    • @living.different
      @living.different  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s definitely very time consuming which explains the price haha 🍁

    Take a panel/one tarp down. Need air flow from the bottom to make an up draft

      We have an air gap at the front of the fire where the panel is already. Thanks for watching!

    Adding that second pan looks like it really helped with the boiling process. Its also nice to have the kids help and teach them how to do it. Todd from da Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

    If you have a gas leaf blower and aim it at the fire you will get a much hotter fire. Just need it to idle or just above idle. Your doing a great job

    I do a transfer from the wood stove when the reading on the refractometer is at 50 to 55% and then boil it to 67% on my electric stove to finish it off

    The amount of work, propane, wood - is it cheaper than store bought?
    Ofc added value that it's home made. And I rather do that + the fun of 'camping'.

    • @living.different
      @living.different  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We don’t really use much propane, maybe one tank. The wood doesn’t cost anything but time , there’s a lot of trees down at the cabin. It’s really just time that it “costs”
