I've heard you say so many times how grateful you are for your viewers and for your Patrons. Know that we are also grateful. The creativity of your work (music, visuals, content) is not typical of many of the channels I follow. Thank you, Chrome, for continuing to put out first class material. I ALWAYS look forward to your videos:)

Yep, my total expenses including insurances, cell, gas, food, laundry, vehicle maintenance and entertainment is between $800-$900 for absolutely everything. I was spending an extra $12-1500 (mortgage/rent, maintenance, house insurance and things to put in the house) before van life. Getting rid of mortgage/rent saves so much. Now I can retire in another year & a half, thanks to van life! Hugs Cruz n Chrome

Hi Roamer, I have to say that I don't really have a number as such although I know my vehicle will likely need to be replaced in 2-3 years so I try to put $300-$400 each month (more when I am able) in a savings account for that purpose. So I didn't include that in my numbers but my hope is to replace this with no vehicle loan just pay cash.

    • @VanmaRuth
      @VanmaRuth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Roamer, another way to consider this is, I had depreciation on my vehicle before I lived in it. Now I put maybe 1/3 more kilometers on now than before living in it. But I've always had a vehicle so it is not much different than before but then I also had rent or mortgage above my vehicle expenses. Still a great idea to have a buffer for repairs and put money away each month for the next vehicle. Hope that helps.

Hey chrome, I have a question abt what you said in regards to the $5000 insurance umbrella. You stated that anything bolted down would be covered in the event something happens with the exception that you can show receipts, so I was wondering if u have a little safety box for them? My concern is if the van catches fire, n their kept in the van, you have no proof....do you have a back up method, like taking pictures of the receipts, or perhaps an app on your phone that can store them so you can print them out if needed?

Hi Chrome. Love your videos Man. Wish we had have bumped into you in our travels. We're from Australia and just finishing our RV holiday and my wife got a sim through AT&T for $40 a month that covered us for unlimited data. When in Canada that included 50G at normal speeds and then shaped which only happened on the last couple of days after we all hotspotted to the phone and watching Netflix and TH-cam a lot. Perhaps crossing the border and getting an AT&T sim will save you some dollars. Worked fine for us.

Thanks a TON for this vid Bro! I've done the math for myself and my GF. In total it comes to about $2k a month and I'm also in Canada. Mine includes our bad habits such as smoking. If I added in doing YT as you do it would easily jump to $2500, and yup, that's mostly fuel. My current van is a hot rodded 76 GMC. OH BTW! Thank you for an honest breakdown of van life expenses. I plan on buying my mode of transportation so I won't have payments. And in this past 6 months, I changed my diet to eating healthier than I ever. I don't PLAN on doing as much traveling as you are doing. But, I will be traveling around my families during the warm months of New England and then heading down south for a few months to "follow the sun". My income peaks at $1k / month and with care I am certain I will be content. You have had a strong influence o a number of nomads, and I think it's because you are real about Van life. Thanks, again, see you down the road someday, I hope!

Here in the states we have multiple insurance companies. Everyone of them claims they can save you money but when you call there really is no difference in the yearly premium. I know this from experience with the many companies I have called hoping for a better rate. So one insurance company with a monopoly or multiple insurance companies like in the US it's still a costly monopoly with no real difference. No I don't have any tickets or accidents nor am I a young driver nor do I live in a big city.

Gas, phone and insurance all sound high compared to the US. But healthcare cancels this all out. I'm ± your age, and 'bamacare runs around $500, that's with a serious deductible (meaning, you'll incur costs if you actually need care). Dude, take advantage of it, see a doctor every year. Early detection of any issues is priceless.

So, it sounds like the smart thing to do for anyone who becomes a nomad is to establish a TH-cam channel and then most anything they buy or do can be featured in a video and written off...wouldn’t matter if the channel had any subscribers or not.

    • @kateps1874

In the U. S. the IRS gives ppl a certain time frame for write-offs in starting a business before they need to show a profit or that other criteria are met so that ppl don't merely say they have a business but don't really. Ppl try that in order to write off regular expenses, I mean, like indefinitely, but IRS is wise to it.

200$ a month for food sounds like very little! My food bill is about 400$ a mo when i'm at home (& i eat with my dad often so i don't buy all the food i eat). Now while i'm travelling, my daily food budget is 40$ a day & it's kinda tight sometimes (& i ain't fancy!). I saved up 3K just for food on this trip, lol, but i keep extending it, i was supposed to leave Early June, now departure date is (unofficially) July 7th because my friend who's a musician has a CD release party on July 5th, & i also have many projects to make happen before leaving. So i just picked up doing transcription online again after 2 months of ABSOLUTELY NO GRIND WHATSOEVER! Gotta make some bank, i wanna visit Baggins in Victoria, lol! Spend the night working from 9pm to now- 6am, going to bed as the 3 other people in my dorm room are heading out, perfect, i'll have the room to myself. At 55$ a night the cheapest "hotel room" in the West End! When your schedule is opposite to every one you can use that to your advantage to get more space & quiet when others are elsewhere!
It's cool that you're telling us the cost of things, keeping it real Chrome! I think i'm gonna get myself a storage locker next year so i can leave stuff in Vancouver & i won't have to haul everything around every time i move ( i'm on foot & i have books, letter-writing stuff, tons of mail received while here (love that PO BOX!), zines (made by others that i'm reading, made by me printed & that i'm working on), multiple sewing projects, wool to make mail-holder clotheslines, a long arm stapler & my typewriter bwahaha! & 5 pairs of shoes...all different colors gold, seafoam & red, neon orange, burgundy velvet & hot pink. Weird on my friend & i'll see you on June 2nd if all goes well! 🌞🎉💜🎥😎

Poop bucket a luxury? Hahahaha. I'd call that a necessity! If it was me I'd have to have two. My poops are huge. LOL Stay awesome dude. ❤️ U man. * man hug *
Edit to add. Oh yea!. Internet in Canada is insane. I'm a US dude who worked for Bell Canada. Holly Frigin A. You get real caps on internet usage. Go over that and you get hit with more charges by the Gig. It's so high it hurts! My bros in the US have no idea.

I watched a money video you made in 2017. You are spending about the same money now as you were then, and that includes all the TH-cam stuff. Your cell bill is now half of what it was. Way to go, keep it up

Chrome do you think it's feasible to have just 2 USB fans for a van that size with windows for ventilation/cross breeze? For the summer mths in BC. I am about to embark and may see you on the road :) I won't have the roof vent this year so this is my set up

Gas, food, items needed, maintenance on van, insurance, daughter days and treats. It all adds up and like Molly says, it's the cost of having a business. Gas would be the biggest tho', even with the loan. :( IT will be good when that is over.

Damn I thought we pay a lot for gas at Greece (1.40-1-60€ per litre) but canada looks expensive too. Especially cellphones. Bad thing is that the monthly income for a 8h/6days per week job is 500-700€ for the 70% of the people here.. 😐

You have a very clever accountant! Here in the states you cannot deduct a work space that does mixed use duty. For example, you may deduct your dedicated home office for business inside your house. Say that office, which is solely used for business, no sleeping, hobbies, or other uses ...and that office is 1/4 of the space of your entire square footage....then yes you can deduct the 1/4 of your house expenses. If you try to deduct your whole house...the IRS will lay a visit and do a nasty audit. Deduct everything while you live in it, sleep and cook in it, would not be allowed. I highly doubt the tax people have come on board with acceptance of living in a vehicle, traveling a vacation lifestyle, and deducting the entire thing. Maybe it’s different in Canada? Of course if you give your residence as another location, and never ever live there throughout the entire year....who cares about audits right? :-)
It is not always “cheaper for everyone to live in a van” if you travel (gasoline, oil, etc), go to “paid” overnight spaces, go to places and museums requiring admission prices, maintenance costs go up the more one travels, have to use propane, pay for health clubs, eat out more, etc. A cheap apartment rental lifestyle costs about the same. You trade off the gasoline, propane, vehicle maintenance, mileage, eating out, health club costs, etc for rent and home cooked meals. Or....stay broken down off in the woods somewhere cold and hungry when all the money runs out mid month, as so many are doing these days. That’s not exciting or freeing. A 24 year old I know tried to live in his vehicle while working for Amazon. He hated it. He did it while waiting on an apartment list. He is so much happier now living in an apartment. He says he spends less because he cooks at home now, and doesn’t eat out three times a day. He was cold all the time (it was autumn). It’s very difficult to live in a vehicle happily and “free” on $500 to $800 a month, AND travel and do exciting things as you do.
    .
You do sell “the dream” quite well, and make beautiful, skilled videos! I will keep watching.

VANCITY VANLIFE VANCITY VANLIFE I do understand what you are saying. Thanks for responding. I just was trying to say, that here in the states one must have a legal stick and brick “residence. But full time nomads aren’t living there at all - -they live in their vehicles full time. Technically, one can’t write off the entire life and van- only a percentage. The IRS views the lifestyle as a “vacation” and not “employment.
I couldn’t write off my entire studio apartment when I was a freelance designer. If the room where I worked did double duty, (I slept there, prepared meals there, did some other living activities in there besides work)...that voids out the “employment deduction” factor. With the nomadic lifestyle, if one tries to deduct the entire life, it can bring on a tax audit, and fines. Because the government doesn’t want people writing off their “vacations.” Because that’s what THEY will think it is - from a tax point of view. (Maybe it’s different in Canada.)
