i remember talking about this after it happened ... it was like time stopped and we all tried to find someone that recorded it !! life before the internet
I'm 56. This is one of the best Golden moments of TV that ever existed. Look up the backstory. David was a HUGE Pearl Jam fan, and this was a surprise.....
Letterman was trying to get a laugh out of "Black" with a spoofy joke when Vedder came onstage unannounced and held a note for 14 straight seconds. And vanished. Epic.
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky But why, why, why can't it be Oh, can't it be mine? Great lyrics
Never could listen to this song much. As amazing as it is, the lyrics are just crushing to hear. Can't listen to it without sympathizing to anyone who might've ever felt this way about someone...
There's a radio show where Eddie tells his side of the story. He hated all the attention at the time, basically just came to the show to make them stop
There’s no musical based tone in Vedder’s tormented vocal performance as he gradually transcends his lost soul into Sheol where he’ll be introduced to his fallen companions all awaiting Judgment Day. Letterman admitted he himself is going to hell.
Turned into? I think you need to understand hollywood has always been democratic. The difference being a democrat in the 90's was a lot different that what one is today. All the great comedians that used to be on Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn like Patrice O Neal, Greg Giraldo etc. were democrats over 20 years ago when the show aired too but today they would probably be middle ground or alt casual right based on what they joke on and how they would mock the left today. There is no middle ground anymore. Just you extreme right and extreme left people in the USA that have 0 common sense to see down the middle. It's more about being extreme today and not the band or the wrestling promotion of the 90's.
Comes out surprising everyone,
Brings out the mic from his jacket pocket
Sings his heart out
Refuses to elaborate
Freakin' leaves without saying a word😂
This is one of the coolest TV moments. Just came out crushed and bounced
He definitely didn't crush it lol.
@@Andrew-bj6ym ok… that’s like… your opinion man
@@Chimagic It's a fact. He's off key and out of tune. Sounds like crap
@@Andrew-bj6ym part of the magic brother
You're both right. He got a little wobbly there, probably due to not warming up. But his big surprise did crush it -- totally.
My husband and I were watching this when it happened. It was the most amazing random thing ever.
i remember talking about this after it happened ... it was like time stopped and we all tried to find someone that recorded it !! life before the internet
I was watching it. I remember this like it was yesterday.
This is a real drop-the-mic moment.

I love how Eddie teases him with his presence!!
I love Eddie's embarrassed manner!😚😍
That was legendary.
Happy 60th Birthday Ed.🎉🎉🎉

Someone who grew up in Seattle in the Mecca and heyday of grunge. This is epic!!
Vedder was booked as Letterman's final music guest for the Monday, May 18th edition of "The Late Show" on CBS. How appropriate!
Pretty sure it was foo fighters
Was foo fighters
David letterman’s and Eddie Vedder are friends that’s why this happened. But very cool of Eddie to do a cameo like this
@@kryptex666Pearl Jam was a new band at that point. They weren't friends. They hadn't met before then.
@@allendracabal0819 this makes this clip even more cool

Eddie Vedder great singer and the band exceptional...but the bass guitar is a standout, just brilliant
I was thinking the exact same thing. His name is Will Lee, and he absolutely killed.
Que tímido es Eddie que encanto de hombre
Qué maravilla
This was really cool. I heard Opie talking about this today on his live stream.
Adoravel Eddie ❤❤❤❤❤
So kind of Eddie to do that
That was a quick $5000 check in those days.
Perfeição...
Eddie just pimped up on that stage like a grunge gentleman
Pimped?
Very cool!
That’s great 👍
The way he screams Eddie!! reminds me of when in Frasier Martin Crane thought his dog was under Daphne 😂😂
Y'all should see Pearl Jam's induction to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame
Maybe we'll hear this on Monday night .......
I hoped the last part didnt exist. Like he just went away. Would have made it even more iconic
that was cute❤
Wow
❤❤❤❤❤
I can't believe EDDIE showed up on LENO...😅
Showed up, showed out, left...
Epic!
when late night and snl were still good ! went to sh1t around 2010
So Daves last 5 years were shit?
@@atb89 ima put Dave in a different category lol ✌️
T bone Burnett was in Dave’s band. Pretty cool
Eddie Vedder is the motherfucking GOAT!
Eddie wearing the upside down pink triangle pin. 🩷
Prertty much Eddie Vedder in a nutshell at the time lol
Dave exaggerated his story @ the Rock and Roll HOF.
Dave was really into 90s music. He had a crush on Natalie Merchant also. 😭
And the twilight singers
Nice! Eddie singing with a good drummer once again. I miss that. Haven’t sounded good since Dave Abbruzzese left.
Shots fired. Lol. Do you have a permit for that gun?
You abruzzese fan boys are a really weird bunch.
Paul Shafer!r ir s your wingman 2023 all day
He seemed pissed off about something. Pulled away from audience member, sang with a frown, then bounced!

IM SURE EVERY PEARL JAM/ED VEDDER/JEROME TURNER FAN CLIMAXED WHEN THIS HAPPENED ON THE LATE SHOW
Il tipo alla tastiera somiglia a Moggi...
Lol i love how Eddie is not an attention whore at 00:38 he purposefully avoids fans trying to suck up to him

What ist this for are Melody / Song ?
Pearl jam song Black.
'96 was when Ed's voice had really started to change and not for the better.
Speak of the devil!
Ew, David, don't try to sing.
Too bad Letterman turned into such a liberal nozzle!
