  • The USA Fender American Telecaster Professional in Butterscotch / Blonde and Black pick-guard with Tim Shaw V-Mod Pick-ups - 2019 build. Great to Play but Left me Questioning...
It looks the part and despite being a modern take on a timeless classic, the Fender American Professional Telecaster series one certainly harks back to the look and vibe of the 1950s. The birth of the Fender Broadcaster, which became the No-caster, and finally to be re-named Telecaster was affectionately given the title ‘The Blackguard Tele’ by those early Telecaster lovers. So, in recent weeks I’ve unboxed a number of Fender Stratocasters and this time, it’s the guitar that arguably started the electric guitar movement, but… I’m having second thoughts about this particular model and in this video as I fine-tune my guitar journey, I think about a number of questions in my mind. In future videos you can see how my journey would take me into the world of Custom Shop Telecasters with the first to be delivered - a 1961 model - ( • UB:25 Custom Shop Fend... ) and of course it was only a matter of time to be followed by a 50s model ( • UB:33 Custom Shop Fend... )
Throughout this video I show the American Pro guitar in a fair bit of detail and do a number of tonal comparisons and give my thoughts on it. Without doubt, a very nice guitar which is great in my studio as it cuts so well within a busy recording mix. If you want to hear a number of telecasters side-by-side, see my review here -( • Q&A:8 Fender Telecaste... ). If your in the market for one of these modern build guitars I hope this video will give you some insights as I cover various details and tones you can expect to see and hear... Enjoy!

One thing I know from experience is that the American Professional series is meh, but the American Professional 2 series is a great jack of all trades. I particularly like my pro2 strat, but the pro2 tele is no slouch. It seems like I remember someone saying the Vmod 1 pickups came out wrong, and that was part of why they came out with the Vmod2. I think it stands for vintage-modern. Anyway they’re less modern sounding than the first iteration but not fully vintage either. *edit: also idk about that weird case, never even seen one like that. Maybe it was just some of them. I know Gibson had a hard time getting cases after COVID, maybe fender too? In fact one of my gibsons from 2020 has a case from Puerto Rico that weighs about eighty-million metric tons.

Hi Craig, Yes I heard a lot of good reviews regarding the Pro 2 series but never tried any of them myself. The Tele Pro 1 does appear to have a bit more oomph than the Strat Pro 1 but as you commented... the pick-ups are a bit meh. After about a week of owning the Strat I was about to purchase a set of hand-wound pick-ups from a local chap who apparently makes amazing ones, but I figured for re-sale purposes I would keep the guitars stock and unmarked, as I new it was only going to be a matter of time that I would go back to a more vintage type via the Custom Shop route. Yes the case is a strange one, a little label inside I just noticed says 'Made in China' importer Fender Instruments. I ordered it online during lock-down and just getting back into things after 40 years I had no idea what was what. I also used to own home made guitar cases that needed a few people to lift it...;-) If you have time to watch a video coming up in a week or two... you'll get to see what I got up to regarding that Telecaster question... regards: Stu

Great review, Stu! Very much a vintage modern (eg bridge, neck pickup pickguard adjustment screws, tuners and 22 frets) combo - I’d have to swap the tuners for retro vintage ones :)

Thanks for comment Derek, much appreciated... yes it is a guitar that crosses both worlds which I believe was Fenders intention. I thought about replacing some parts but decided against it as this coming Friday's video reveals what I decided... and if you love Tele's... you should find this a good one... regards: Stu
