Such a tragic life. Ms Simone could have been a classical concert pianist but racism stopped her. And even at the end of her days, she was treated badly by those who made fortunes from her music.
She made a choice to be active for Civil Rights and she paid the price, and she also has a collection of songs that carry so much emotions and will be around forever.
Yes. I've only seen one reactor take on that song. The 1959 TV version you probably refer to is pretty stunning, but when you think Billie recorded that song first in 1938...One of the most important, and horrifying, songs ever written.
Nina Simone was a classically trained pianist. It was her dream and as you can see she was supremely gifted. She was denied entry to her program simply because they didn’t want to admit a black student. That racism crushed her and it stayed with her her whole life. She got a job playing piano in a bar simply to make money and began singing for the tips. That racist system crushed her spirit and her soul .... what she gave to the world is amazing but she had so much more she wanted to give and was denied and dismissed. It’s why she ultimately left the U.S. John Legend played the Nina Simone song ‘Feeling Good’ during this past presidential inauguration on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. It was beautiful and cathartic, just like her music. Thanks Fred and Tim for sharing this. Black history is American history and if we don’t learn from it we will forever repeat it’s mistakes. Much love and support.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame doesn’t only induct rock musicians, nor is it a celebration of solely rock music but rather a wide range of popular music. The name is a bit of a misnomer really.

Nina did not play...I went to one of her concerts at a club and because the ppl were drinking and talking (like we do in clubs) and she declared, "You ppl didn't come to hear my music," and walked off the stage! We BEGGED her to come back and when she returned you could hear a pin drop! She put on an AMAZING concert (Showboat in Philly)
Maya Angelou was the same way. She almost walked out of an event at my college because the crowd kept talking. They expected respect. Demanded it. Deserved it.
So emotional ❤️ There is stuff we can do! Learning and listening helps us to identify racism then we can start to call it out when we see it. It exists beyond what is overt and obvious. It’s the covert and the deniability that keeps that system going and exists in things like the ‘Southern strategy’ and it hides in plain site like with ‘red lining’ that allows people to ignore what is going on if they aren’t looking and it doesn’t affect them - even though ultimately it does because racism is harmful to everyone, even those who appear to benefit from it. We also need to look at ourselves and find where the biases lie. No one wants to believe they are part of the problem but we all have work to do. Much love!

"Wild is the Wind", "Strange Fruit", "Here Comes the Sun", and "Four Women". My parents raised me on Nina Simone and Tracy Chapman with a WIDE variety of records and cassette tapes as a child. Yes, Strange Fruit was originally sung by Billie Holiday in the late 30's early 40's. The FBI tried to make her stop singing it. Nina Simone later remade the song again, which means not even the FBI could kill the song.

Love her!! Great choice. 🙏🏾
Anyone that can play the piano and almost any other instrument and covey and emotion, a place, a memory. They have my complete respect and attention.
Nina!!! I could see the physical effect that this artist and song did to you. Thank you! Thank you! You 2 R a breath of Fresh Air! Take care and Be Safe.
I'd heard of her before but had never heard her music before now. Thank you for educating me 🙂
Love these 😊young men. Especially when they say how tough it had to be in 1976. 😊
Hey Guys, You should react to Nina’s song’s Sinnerman and Strange Fruit, they will blow you away for sure.
I can’t listen to Strange Fruit without crying my eyes out every single time, the harrowing imagery it conjures up with every listen are just a harrowing but essential reminder of the evil Jim Crow laws of the time...
Yes, Strange Fruit was originally sung by Billie Holiday in the late 30's early 40's. The FBI tried to make her stop singing it. Nina Simone later remade the song again, which means not even the FBI could kill the song.
Williams Kings! I love you for featuring Nina Simone. She broke all kinds of barriers and taught us to be strong! Williams Kings you're also exercising your freedom through social media and showing us how to pursue our dreams. Thank you for another great reaction 👍🏽💓
LOOOOOOVE Ms. Nina Simone. My granddad hipped me to her when I was a little younger than you guys are. Her music is still relevant today. ❤️💫✨

Nina was a phenomenal pianist too, as this video makes clear...
Nina Simone Concert on June 22, 2000.@ The Wiltern Theater, in Los Angeles. Ca. The shortest concert I may have ever been to; yet the BEST Concert I'd ever attended, and I've been to a many of concerts. Btw, my young brothers.."Keep connecting the generations and refreshing the Musical Souls of the masses". I'm enjoying the responses from the old & the young. Especially, from those like me who grew up hearing & listening to this Treasured Music.
Your hearts are so good. And for you say ‘just listen’...that’s a powerful statement. Thanks for all you do. ☮️💜
Sounds like southern blues and jazz ❤ i like the music.
