      Hi! I just got an used original bmpcc for 1/4 the price of a new bmpcc4k.
      I've read that to get the best result you need to use resolve (I never used it).
      Where do you place the conversion LUT(bm to rec709) in the color grading tab? WB and color correction on the first node, color grading in the second node and the convertion LUT in the last node?

    The filters on the sensor on the BMPCC4k are more opaque making for more vibrant / separation of colors (even in skin tones) which makes parts look oversaturated when comparing to the old bmpcc. This is a very good thing because you can take away saturation but it is impossible to accurately add more. With a little tweaking by removing color from high luma areas, you can get BMPCC4k to match BMPCC exactly. You can't get BPMCC to match BMPCC4k because the color information simply doesn't exist

      I've found an used original bmpcc in working order for 1/4 the price of the new 4k. And it came with a pancake 9mm Oly lens. Seems like a steal watching this comparison. Also... With a pancake it is actually a pocket cinema camera that you can always take with you. I was hoping that BM would come up with a bmpcc 2.0 with the same form factor while resolving the issues like not having a built-in IR filter, better internal battery and so on, even if it meant losing the 4k.

    The first 5 seconds of the cam B I knew it was the BMPCC, I love the camera but I always use it with a stabilizer or a tripod because of the wobble (which gave it a ways instantaneously). I made a test upscaling a 5min clip with gigapixel to 4k and the quality was actually mindblowing! For now it's a pretty long process but in a few years with powerful PC it will make total sense if you need higher resolution.

    @JLSTibu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It's the sensor. It's all about the sensor size and proportions. That's the answer to why you, and many other pocket users, feel that the Original Pocket is more organic and cinematic. Its sensor is the size of S16 analog film stock used for many independent movies throught the 20th century. We are used to seeing what this type of sensor size and proportions does to a big-screen image, just like it happens with most of the S35 digital sensors. It feels natural to most viewers, even if it's still a digital image. This is also because our grandfathers in imaging science strived to find the most human-like proportions you could use in film stock and they arrived at S35 as a practical answer to the right proportions in relation to quantity of film being used and image detail. Now most prosumers don't give a fuck about cinematic sensor proportions because of 'Bigger is better' mentality that has most camera companies drooling as they sell "Cinema" cameras with FF and M4/3 sensors... Then the same prosumers keep wondering why if their $2k mirrorless cameras have the same DR, Codecs (in this case), Resolution, etc, than a $5k C300 or a $20k Red Camera (I don't mention an Alexa here because that's another kind of witchery happening with the sensor that goes way beyond cinematic S35), why their little camera doesn't hold up?. Well, it's not because it's little or less expensive.... It's because the little camera works with a photography sensor instead of a film-sized one. No fucking wonder it desn't look like film.
    Until a good portion of the market that's getting wet all over the FF and M4/3 "cinema" cameras starts asking for film sensors in their products instead of more resolution and DR we won't get this gap between cinematic images and photography video trying to be cinematic to close.
    The closer we got to this was the BMPCCHD which is definitely way ahead of its time and so dangerous to the camera market BM didn't make the 4k with a film sensor...

  • @zyxyuv1650
    @zyxyuv1650 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The old BMPCC is still entirely usable as long as you upscale it to 4K.
    Since it records 4:4:4 RAW, you actually get 4K Chroma resolution when converted to the format of TH-cam's 4K 4:2:0.
    I.e. 4K 4:2:0 can be converted into 1080p 4:4:4, and vice versa -- you do get the Chroma but you don't get the same Luma information, however you actually save a lot more of it in 4K due to the higher bitrate.

      @@innstikk You are confused and don't know how this works. Bayer sensor cameras can [potentially] record 4:4:4:4 which is non-YUV RAW, capturing a discrete value for each of the four pixels in the CFA. They can also record some form of YCbCr partial debayering, I.e. 4:4:4 but with a Green ratio (due to the RED patent)

    I've already rigged it out. I'm also using the metabones speedbooster and Nikon lenses which is really cool and some native lenses. My next investment will be a nice monitor and I'm hoping the Ninja V we'll work with it I was told that the Free World monitors work with it.
    I've also invested in a small rig with the Sony battery backup.

    I still hesitated at the first sample, but I no longer doubted it B is orig.BMPCC :-D Less contrasting in midtones and colors, and greater dynamic range, And all owners of BMPC4K can get angry, but it is. (I had a new BMPCC 4K a week and returned it) Just if you can do it with your old pocket, it will give you a better look than the new pocket.
    As a great addition to my older BM cameras I have a GH5 for speed documentary "run and shoot" (excellent stabilization, good battery, good sound, low bitrate codec for long shoots, articulating screen etc) the new pocket4k can't give me this. if I want a modern look I take comfortable GH5, if i want a cinema look picture i take old Pocket or Micro for slowmo

    • @TheGuym619
      @TheGuym619 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      beg to differ, the pocket 4K has done me well, more-so than the GH5. GH5 is definitely good for run and gun ease, but if you want true cinematic 4K 60 fps under $8,000, the pocket 4K is your best bet. Dynamic range and color science is too damn good. Bmpcc original definitely has a unique flatter/green look than the 4K's more magenta/orange toned look, but both can be manipulated in post to look the same. Greater dynamic range? Don't think so.
      The Bmpcc was a beast of its time, but there is no way it surpasses the innovations in the 4K...

    There has been loads of comments flying about which is true. The new BMPCC4k just don't compare to the old BMCC or pocket. Uses a sony sensor and it's high on the highlights due to pixel dimension size - therefore the filmic look has more or less gone from the 4k. I prefer the old pocket regardless of the iso features in low light and sharpness. It's nothing to do with grading, set design etc. Thats what an ignorant pro (who by saying this isn't btw) would tell an amateur. The real pros will tell the difference. I've tested myself and trust me, the BMPC4K is nothing like it's previous model. It's great but people who want film regardless of great grading, grain techniques will suffer the original magic look. Sometimes perfect is not for what you want....they gone a new direction and set a benchmark butty URSA AND PRODUCTION 4K gives me better results. I'm gutted as I waited for this. Great for my documentaries.

    It’s subtle, but the bmpcc has slightly lifted blacks and a bit softer details. A very similar look could be accomplished on the 4K with a simple 1/8 Black Pro Mist filter on the lens, and then you’ve still got all the advantages of that camera at your disposal.

      I believe you. I’ve always thought the original bmpcc in general produces a more organic and filmic look than the 4K. The 4K is more digital looking, which is typical of higher resolution sensors. I’m a recent convert to the Tiffen Pro Mist filters and you should really try them out if you haven’t yet and are lamenting the less filmic look of your bmpcc4k.

    Color goes to the OG cam b, but the 4k has an active mount and the image stabilization definitely makes the handheld shots better, and I think a little tweaking and mabe pull the saturation a little back on the 4k, you could match them reasonably well. They both look great to be honest. The OG pocket and the godfather BMCC 2.5k were both way ahead of their time. I still rock the 2.5k, and I love the images I can get out of it. I do want a 4k though, not due the increases resolution, I don't really care about 4k most of the time, but the active mount, BRAW and high frame rate options are what appeal to me. I'd say my next camera will either be a pocket 4k or maybe if I wait long enough, it's equivalent replacement. I would love to see BMD come out with a pocket 4k, that has a bigger pixel pitch and also a dual gain Fairchild sensor like they had in the older models. There is something about that sensor that a lot of us love. They could even do multiple versions of the same camera like panasonic does. Them we could have the BMPCC-FP 4k. Wouldn't that be cool. Good comparison video, thanks for that.
