Poor state of the cage damper - why they vibrate at idle and under load

  • Here we see the poor state of the damper springs compared with new. The deterioration of the bearing faces which lets the cage and entire weight of the clutch plate pack vibrate at idle and when under load while riding. It can all be repaired and become a lasting fix for what otherwise would be a very expansive set of new parts which could be just as bad after another 15,000 miles.

    After months of research, videos of youtubes, articles of the internet, open my motorcycle and dismantle my clutch...i found on this video what is really my problem. I have a CBR500 2017 that has oly 17.000km, downshifted aggressively a couple of times, max accelerated a few...and there i go, need to buy the outer gasket entirely for like 400USD.

    Hi, Where can I obtain the longer springs for the K1300 and also the tapered rivets. I did watch another TH-cam video last year where he replaced the rivets with bolts after drilling out the taper but I cannot find that video again. Any help would be appreciated. Kind Regards.

    I think I have the bearing issue you described, 'cause the clutch on my bike sounds similar to the basked sound you've shown, from idle to 2000 rpm. Would the bearing replacement be a hard job for a amateur mechanic like me? I'd love to have it changed and since most mechanics I've shouwn it to were not even able to distinguish the sound, I trust my own hands better than theirs. My bike is a 2005 Cagiva Xtra Raptor and it has a TL1000 engine.

    I have a 2007 K1200GT with 60000 miles on it. Rattle is present at idle and goes away when pulling clutch handle. Sometimes, if you time it right with the throttle, the bike will stall. I live in the US, are you still rebuilding clutches for this model and how can I contact you ?

      Yes - still rebuilding the clutches for the K series BMWs. 60,000 miles is on the high side. I have spare parts for the rebuilds I perform so there should not be a problem.
      Shrinking and worn main spring coils is not so much the problem in later year baskets. Their main load springs still rattle at idle but its because the lighter rate springs fail to damp the low frequencies at tickover. Once bad this will cause the engines to stall or at least have a very rough tickover. The whole clutch assembly weighs about 6kg. It behaves like a loose flywheel. Catch it the right way - it helps smooth the engine over compression to the next fire. Catch it the wrong way - it can stop the engine or at least make it hesitate for split second.

    Any suggestion will be appreciated.

      There is a German company Gutekunst which is producing all kinds of springs, maybe some of them fit your needs.

    A question mate, how well will your clutch basket work on a 650DL

    • @sharealike1
      @sharealike1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They work 100% for DL1000. 650 has different clutch so not applicable.

      Marco Messa - At what cost? BMW parts are very expensive, I have a friend that spent over $3200.00 doing a clutch job on his GT as they updated the clutch basket. On top of the excessive costs, the bike was out of service for a long time while the dealer waited for the parts.

      Yes - been one of the most common baskets here.
