He also only has one line about "wouldn't it be better if life was like a car, you just push the gaz and every hard part is done for you" (something like that) a...less subtle hint I'd say.
If her social link wasn’t just about cooking and going other stores and talking about her being bullied I wish they did more on her family issues and helping her bond with natsuki and fix their past of being in a abusive relationship and after doing many things they fix it and be better friends and her resolution with natsuki leaving would be more effective and help with her parents for abandoning her for a week so it doesn’t affect her public record and she asks minato to help her to give her more confidence and stand up against them and tell them what they did wrong and they apologize and we get teased by Fuuka mom about us and she blushes and her father would approve us if they were in a relationship and we get more appreciated if we did get top score for being smart and called handsome with our charm and we get more social links events spending time with Fuuka and her parents
Nanako’s dungeon still makes me cry every time I hear it. I attached to her more than any other character I’ve ever had in a game before. Between some of my own struggles with a family that works a lot and how much I missed my little sisters at the time due to me having to cut my genetic father out of my life, it was a lot. I love the video but more than anything I appreciate the love you showed for the games. Thank you.
The fact that Maruki has become a Taxi driver is such an amazing little detail for me. Instead of forcing the ways of people for them, he let's them choose their own ways
Persona 4 Golden is a game I will forever hold as the best JRPG I have ever played. And I will never play it again. Those characters were so real to me that I feel like they’re old friends. Talking to people about Yukiko, Yosuke, Teddy, Kanji, Naoto, Chie, Marie, Rise, Nanako and spring many more is like talking about friends we had growing up. I didn’t have friends growing up. I moved all the time. I don’t have a childhood to look back on. I don’t have friends really at all just due to my constant motion back and forth through life. But I can sit here and think back through my summer in Inaba, and all the memories I have with that cast. And I know someday I can find the train back there somehow. I know I’ll see them again. I’ll never play it again, so the illusion that I can encounter that place once more is never broken.
I won't read this whole comment since you basically try to make one think "Whoa, why's that?" By saying, Persona 4 Golden is my favorite game, but I'll never play it again. And I haven't read anything past that point, 'cause I know you'll say "It'S cAuSe It'Ll NeVeR bE tHe SaMe!" Imma read the comment afterwards to see if I'm right or not.
Welp, I'm sorry, I can relate to not really haveing friends so, sorry. I'd wanna have good memories, but all my friendships have ended in betrayal from my "friends" so I can't really look back on them fondly, so yeah, I'm soy.
PlutOh steam! The story there is that I have been interested in P5 since it’s release back on the PS3/4 cause of its style, but I was 16 and my parents were conservative soooo no. Then when I got old enough to buy a PS4 the price just kept getting more unreasonable and I put it off and put it off. So when I heard the announcement that P4G (really ANY persona game) was coming to PC, I cleared my week, bought the game.... and played it *twice* in that week lol
PlutOh from there it became an obsession and I broke down and bought a PS2/PS4 to play P3 and P5. Now I’ve played 3FES, 4, 4G, and 5, and I literally just started Royal. I really wish I had played this game when I was 15 or 16. If I had I’d probably be a much better person for it. High School would’ve probably looked very different for me.. but even if I’m late to the party, I’m now addicted to SMT games as a whole (Tokyo Mirage Sessions is unironically one the best JRPG experiences I’ve ever had barring Persona, with P4 still being my favorite), and I’m about to buy a 3DS to keep going through the backlog. Then up next on the list is waiting on Persona 6. I hate Sony, and I don’t like the PlayStation platform. But Atlus has convinced to buy that console the instant Persona 6 is released. (Or maybe, just maybe, we can get it on PC... maybe...?)
I think this is one of your best videos yet. It was really cathartic to experience your first time with Personally vicariously this last summer. Seeing what you'd think of the plot points, who you'd romance, and I ESPECIALLY was convinced you would fall in love with the music. Waiting for you to finally hear Heaven was agonizing. In retrospect, it is VERY good that you started with Persona 4, and I'll probably be steadfast in my recommendations of it for newcomers. There was a part of me that wondered if even playing Persona 4 before Persona 3 would be a bit much for people, but judging by your experience, people who love Persona LOVE Persona. I think this video is a fascinating example of just how powerful its premise is; how easy it is for the idea of a JRPG social simulator to grip someone. I'm glad I'll have another person to talk with when Persona 6 comes out. I'm sure we'll be going crazy when that happens. I really look forward to it.
@@Naterkix I think it might come out around 2022 or 23 simply due to the fact that Atlus coopted Unreal engine allowing them to move on to development of Persona 6 with almost zero downtime after the concept stages.
I love your content and this comment KingK, very heartwarming to see Liam get the attention he deserves. When i subscribed he had less than 10k subs but he was still known among the circles of content creators i enjoy and respect.
I find it crazy that the dream from the beginning of Persona 4 was THE FINAL DUNGEON! THE DREAM WAS IZANAMI'S DUNGEON. It never failed to amaze me, the dream in reality, was the dungeon of the final boss.
The point of the game is to never turn your back from the truth. Even with the very first thing that happens to you, you could just brush it off and forget about it as if it was just a minor thing that doesn't even matter. But if you were to look into it, you'll see that it isn't just a minor thing and that there's more to it than you realize.
Another great thing about Futaba is that her English VA did a lot of research into tendencies of people with Autism and such to help portray the character Futaba better. Futaba is my favourite Persona character ever and that won’t change.
your feeling with persona 4 was pretty much my teen years with this game. It was a comforting game for a moment in my life where i had no friends and away from my brother after my parents divorced. It really helped me during my toughest years.
I felt that not enough clues were given to pick the true culprit with confidence, which is something I do find to be disappointing. He does eventually give himself up, but only after you take the leap of faith by targetting him as a suspect.
@@bigtimetimmyjim6486 Meh, you can get it through elimination. The letter situation is a major clue imo, because it excludes a bunch of people when you find out it wasn't Namatame who delivered them
I love Persona. No lie, this is my favorite RPG series ever, and one of my favorite game series. The fact you got into it and made this video makes me really happy. And you actually played them in the same order I did. I played P4 first (the original, I got Golden later when it came out for the VITA), then went back to P3 for morbid curiosity, and then saved up my money to get P5 the day it released, later getting P5 Royal for the same reason. I love this series, for all the reasons you love it. Thank you so much for making this video.
@@rng-mos2314 Some of you persona fans being a gatekeeper this way just because some people haven't played Persona 1 or 2, this is like saying "you're not a real Dark Souls fan cause you haven't played Demon Souls"
@@kliesen- i mean, quite a few people would logically play the first 2 games instead of the last 3 but in terms of playing persona 1 & 2, they are way easier than playing demon souls which was just a ps3 exclusive while persona 1 & 2 were on psp, ps1 and I believe persona 1 was on ps1 classic. But here's what I got to say, if you don't like the first person type of dungeon crawling, you ain't losing much by not playing persona 1, but I cannot say enough that people should play 2 with the fun and rewarding rumour system in the game and the fact that fusion spells are still in persona at this point ( I don't count p3p but p3 does have it) and the really fun combat system. But I can kinda see RNG-MOS's point? kinda, I'm not a big fan of gatekeeping but usually when people say they are a big fan of something, you'd assume they played or at least know of all the games but more often then not I see a lot of so called fans of persona but then say something like scramble or dancing all night is a bad or trash game because it is a spin off or because it isn't persona without the social aspect when persona when persona itself is a spinoff and persona 1 & 2 did not have that social aspect when persona is mainly focused on high school students and the relation pretty much ends there for most of em and not the social aspect found in p3, 4 and 5
@Mrimchaelson Well my OG run of vanilla p5 was around 100+ hours (I had left the game running for like a whole day once, so it says over 120+) that said it was my first JRPG other than Pokemon on my gameboy growing up
"Makoto convinces her sister's Shadow to create a metaverse copy of the interrogation room." I'm sorry, what ? It was a natural part of her palace, and I'm pretty sure Shadow Sae had probably no idea tha the interrogation room identical to the one in reality even existed in her Palace.
Dude you HAVE to try the Persona 2 duology. They're a bit different from the newer games but have arguably the best plot and characters of the series. Also nice video, it definitely sums up why I and many others love these games as much as we do.
the persona series has been a really big part of my life since I was a kid and it always makes me so happy to see new people come in and experience the magic for the first time. I implore you, play the rest of the series. while different from the hashino era games, I feel they're still just as compelling and magical. I loved the video and I could really truly feel the love that you hold for these games through all of the little references. I can't tell you how loud I laughed when I heard Akihiko say "I've been waiting for this!" during the intro to the P3 section or the masterful reference to the Hiimdaisy comic dub when talking about romancing Chie. keep up the great work!
34:05 I think your take is kind of confusing here....As someone who knows where Naoto is coming from, it's not that she ever wanted to be a man, it's that society and the media conditioned her to think that only males could become cool detectives or superheros. She never experienced female representation and assumed that only males could fit her ideal career.
Its injecting western politics into an eastern game. While it's annoying about how wrong he was about it, at least it shows that the persona games do a damn good job at making you think hard about topics of life you deem important, like he did.
@@holy9781 He had to have completely missed the multiple times where Naoto blatantly states that she only acts as a man because people wouldn't take her seriously as a female, much less a high schooler. By his definition Mulan also has gender dysphoria because she cross dressed to go to war in place of her father because women weren't allowed.
Fun fact, my sister in law worked a sushi place where there was a female manager. One of the sushi chefs was a Japanese man who would flat out refuse to listen to her and do what she said because she was a woman. She had to find a male manager to tell him what to do. Naoto isn't trans, she just wants people to take her seriously in a culture that normally ignores women completely.
Can we just talk about how Akechi’s true persona is Loki, the god of mischief, which was perfect for the outfit illusion, the second persona, and his entire character. They really knew what they were doing.
i love morgana but i wish ryuji and morgana could've had a better relationship in the game. like there's a tiny bit of lines of them just chilling, but yeah other than the way morgana kinda treats ryuji, one of my favorite characters in the game lol
people sometimes fail to understand that morgana is very insecure for not having what he considers a worthy goal to stay with the phantom thieves, as well as being eventually replaced on the team. he hides that by acting overly confident in himself and ryuji gets to be the butt of his mighty attitude most of the time. his temper tantrum during okumura's arc was bound to happen, considering that futaba took his role as the navigator and had been doing a much better job than him. it's an understandable behavior, but i think that both he and ryuji should've apologized for being assholes to each other, which should've been a turning point in their friendship. i actually think the anime handled this scene quite well, surprisingly, although i still think the timing was really bad because mona ended up stealing the spotlight from haru and her character arc
I'm sorry man I played thru Persona 4 recently and now I'm avoiding any information about 3 and 5 like the plague, so I can experience it 100% uunnknowing, I'm sure the vid is fire, but that time has not come yet.
As a fellow massive spoiler phobic, you can do it, but really finding out spoilers doesn't ruin anything, if anything they should be used as fuel, once you hear a spoiler just get interested as in how did it reach that specific plot point? Which events led to it? Spoilers exist because people want to talk about things they experienced which i think is really important, that's how we find out about awesome series, also spoilers a lot of the time are completely inaccurate, or you simply don't know the context so there's just no point worrying about them so much, there's nothing wrong about avoiding spoilers, i can just say from personal experience that it'll probably just hurt you on the long run hating spoilers. Note: also i wouldn't watch the video either if i hadn't played Personas yet cause im still super strict with spoilers, just less so nowadays, i just felt like giving you the shout cause i felt like i could relate.
@@dimensionalnemesis8636 No, that doesn't really work for me, because Persona 4 kinda was already spoiled big time. So story goes like that, I hadn't really expressed any interest in to persona series before P4G came to steam. The thing is I already knew who is the real killer is, I don't know how, I don't know when (prolly some shit bad who relates to Adachi was posting his artwork of him and it somehow imprinted over the years) so when I played P4G i felt like something wasn't right, and when the big twist happened, it did nothing to me. I don't want to see a passing joke about major spoilers or plot twists. I just don't wanna.
If Liam Triforce likes the combat of Persona 4 and loves the combat of Persona 5, I imagine he'll become obsessed with the press turn combat of Shin Megami Tensei III, IV, IV Apocalypse, and Digital Devil Saga. He should also at least play the Persona 2 dualogy, since it's story is superb and laid the foundations for concepts like the shadow self.
Persona 5 changed my life, but Royal. Royal was the game that changed me so much. It helped me get through 2020. I was ready to just quit life due to my depression, but Royal is the one game that got me through the year and keep me going. I don't know where would be. If I didn't play Royal. Persona 5 was my GOTY 2017 and don't even know why, but it was because of how much love for original that I had. But Royal was the one that did more for me and the reason that got through 2020 and it that alone that it my GOTY 2020.
Maruki is definitely up there, but I think Adachi just barely surpasses him for me. I totally relate to Adachi's frustration with his life, his isolation and cynicism. Not only is he a great foil to the protagonist, but I'm sure plenty of people see where he's coming from. It felt like fighting the worst aspects of myself, I could see myself easily becoming someone just like Adachi.
I don't think Maruki was a good antagonist because the conflict between Maruki and the Phantom Thieves is a weak one with no real stakes. What happens if Maruki wins? You go back to a reality where everyone is happy but it's not real. Oh, the horror! Hell, I even prefer the ending where Maruki wins over the actual "good ending" where the Phantom Thieves wins because Atlus doesn't do a good job of explaining why you'd want to oppose Maruki. Atlus tried to make Maruki an antagonist that you can understand, someone who sees themself as the hero of their story which is a good thing but the problem is they went too far on this aspect to the point where you don't have much motivation to stop Maruki. The only reason we're told to stop Maruki is: well, Marukis reality isn't real so we have to stop him which isn't much incentive. I wish Royal would've gone deeper into why living in a reality where everything is perfect and everyone are happy is something bad because of how it removes the possibility of growth and individuality which they tried to do with Kasumis character but this is something that's not really explored properly, hence why I believe Maruki is a well written character but not a good antagonist.
@@adamtideman4953 You missed the point. It's not that the reality isn't "real" it's that it strips everyone in it of their free will and everyone lives "happy" according to Maruki. It's no different than what Yaldabaoth did except with a more human presentation. Free will being the main thing that the entire game, not just royal, is based around and what all the protagonists ultimately fight for it's pretty easy to see why they would try to stop Maruki.
You have become so great at conveying emotions in your work Liam, this video tugged at my heartstrings by making me think of the time I first finished persona 4 all those years ago. Several others have brought me close to tears. Love how much you're improving and all the anecdotes, keep it up!
Persona 4 is my favourite game of all time and has been I played it in 2015 Its a perfect video the only thing is that naoto is fully female as she says at rank 8 of her SL if I'm not wrong. And only identified as a male because of the sexism in the workforce in Japan as she wanted to be taken seriously.
People said that P1 and P2 isn't a part of the modern trilogy. I think it fair to say that because they have different writer, but even then I hope more people would give it a shot even if it a little old. especially P2 duology for having the best story and characters development in the series
Persona 4 golden was such a beautiful game at this point I don’t play the game for compilation, I play it to see the friendship between the team over and over again
I feel like you didn't give Aigis enough credit, easily my favorite p3 character, I'm sad she doesn't have a proper romance. Also I'm suprised you didn't mention how you are forced to date every female party member if you max them.
My favorite character in all of Persona is Maruki. I love how isn’t a typical villain and the Phantom Thieves question whether stopping him is the right thing. I also love the symbolism with his persona being Azathoth and how the reality he wants is only a dream. But, what made him my favorite character is the line he says in the ending cutscene, “If you find yourself struggling in life...You can start over, like me...Remember that.” That line struck a cord with me and helped me realize that I wasn’t stuck in my terrible way of life. It may not connect to his character as well as some of the other things I’ve mentioned, but it helped me turn my life around and I’ve been changing my life for the better ever since I heard it. I never would’ve thought that a simple sentence could help me realize so many problems with my life and tell me I can change. Even though there are hardships in our life, they make us grow and change as people even if we’ve only been running from them up until that point. I’m glad that Maruki taught me that and that’s why he is my favorite Persona character. I only hope Persona 6 keeps the ball rolling.
"Fuuka doesn't really do anything in the plot." That's not at all true, her persona awakening literally saved the party keeping up with the switches of the shadows weaknesses. She sensed that the shadow in the mall was under them and they had to go below to fight it. Helped them figure out brekaing the right mirrors was the way to find the lovers true form. Literally used her computer skills to help fix the distorted messed up video for yukari so she could see her father's final message properly And genuinely was the glue that held the group together with her being positive and willing to lend an ear to the others of the group cause they were her family. Yet you liked yukiko who acutally didn't do anything in the story XD
Hummm. Yukiko doesn't do much in terms of story, that's true. But the way how I see it is that if Yukiko wasn't the first victim you go actively to rescue, I do wonder if Yosuke and Yu would have continued their search for the murderer. Would Chie be part of the team without her being a victim? Would they have gained the same kind of determination if it was just Saki who died? Well, we can't know for sure. But she is definitely a part of their reason why they continued their operations. Especially after they were successful in rescuing her. Also, what you say about Fuuka is very true. I liked her character, despite not really being "out there."
@@John__Olive in p3 most of your crew dont have s. Links because they are all represented by the fool arcana and they develop as the story goes. In the other hand all of your crew in p4 mostly develops in s. Links (except for the shadow part) so its because in p3 they only have one big social link that levels up as the story goes that makes you think they are more involved (sry for the long answer)
Love the video, love the series. I'm mind blown by Akechi blowing anyone's mind at being the bad guy though. It was so obvious that it completely distracted me from the real mind blow. Igor. Now that was insane.
This is my favorite of your videos. You're so right about the subtle and not so subtle messaging making a big impression on me back in 2008. While Persona doesn't always handle that stuff perfectly, it was mostly clear that the game's heart was in the right place, and it was a good exposure to some mature themes and ideas that would become much more important to me years later.
I just recently got Persona 5 Royal for my Switch, mainly because like a lot of us who stick with Nintendo consoles wanted to find out about this guy who was the first DLC character in Smash Ultimate, and I can see why everyone likes it. Both sides of the game, the life sim and RPG, are both equally fun and challenging.
The thing drew me to Persona 5’s cast so much is that they all remind me of parts of myself They’re people who the public sees as punks, but they don’t let that get to them and show their true colors. I felt so connected to that
Amazing video. I myself have been on a Persona binge the past few months, I finished P4G and moved on to P5R which I've nearly finished. P4G is most definitely my fave game in the series, the characters in it are just outstanding, and like yourself, once it was over I went out of my way to play the spin-off games just to spend more time in that world. These games do such an incredible job at making you care about everyone in them.
I haven't watched the video yet, but I highly recommend the first 3 Persona games as well. (Persona 1, Persona 2 IS, Persona 2 EP). They have beautiful philosophical themes and amazing stories that are the same quality as the recent games.
Nevermind, I see that you plan on playing Persona 2. Good luck with it, hope you enjoy it. Just make sure to play Innocent Sin before Eternal Punishment. I'd also recommend that you read the Persona 1 manga beforehand since almost all of the P1 characters return in P2.
I LIKE those games but...you should go into them understanding that they are more SMT than modern Persona. That's not a bad thing, but many of the hallmarks of the modern Persona games came about with the radical changes 3 took to veer away from the mainline SMT games.
@@jonofpdx I agree that they're different than modern Persona in many aspects, but I wouldn't say that they're like SMT. P1 has a few similarities to the early SMT games with it's dungeon crawling, but otherwise they are pretty unique entries in the series. They don't have social mechanics, but I'd say that they're overall more like modern Persona than they are like SMT. Especially in terms of story and characters, they're very similar to modern Persona and almost nothing like SMT.
I never liked turn based games as a kid. I saw something about P5 back in 2016, didn't think much other than it looked cool. Fast forward to early 2018 I hear more about it from online friends. Start seeing cosplays online. Interest peaked, Got it for my birthday that year. Beat the game and absolutely loved it. The writing, characters, music, etc. Got P5D for christmas last year and Royal back in April. Finally getting to play 4 since i got it for my birthday this year which was a couple weeks ago. Really enjoying it so far. Hoping to play 3, as well as 1 and 2. Great video btw
I must say that, one of the last things you said, about take care of yourself, really hitted me in the core. That's because I've finished P4G yesterday, and I was doing my best to make MC the best he could be, as well as to his social links. Even with all the things we learnt by playing P4G, I wasn't all that aware of myself and the fact that I can do better. Well, thank you for the vid and keep up the good work!
I once never thought that I would ever cry at something so dumb as words and lyrics but when I heard Nanako's dungeon theme I broke into tears and from my own experience I know how she feels and im so happy you highlighted it at 44:30 cause it really deserves more recognition as a theme
I've been SO ZONED into the Persona series as a whole ever since Persona 3! Even though I've played a MODEST amount of the OG P3 and BARELY played P4, nonetheless, the Persona Series has been a Godsend for many people trying to get through life, especially Vanilla P5, and P5R!!!
Persona 4 changed my life and shook me to the core by the time the credits rolled. I was never the same again. My world became much more hopeful and full of color. Even when I get rly down, I refuse to let hardship get the better of me. Take a step back, and get back on your feet and all that. Love your vid! I’m keeping it in my fav vids playlist.
Persona 4 Golden came to Steam on the PERFECT time for me hehehe i just had finished P5 Royal and i was set on buying a Vita or Playstation TV just to play P4 Golden and BAM money saved and one of the best JRPGs ever made added to my library
I bought a PSTV a few months ago for $100 and never got around to playing P4G. Ended up picking it up on Steam and im still pissed haha. Haven't touched my PSTV since
@@stephybloops RIP wallet, but hey there are some good stuff on the vita and psp that should work! if i had brought a pstv i would check some psp games like Maverick Hunter X and Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins!
Sérgio Smargiasse I’ll have to check them out if I get some time. I hacked my PSTV when I first got it but didn’t go too far into everything I could play besides Persona 3 and 4.
I just finished my first ever Persona game (Persona 3 Reload) and I never had it spoiled for me. It was absolutely amazing, just everything about it. It brought in aspects of every game I like (Skyrim, Pokemon, and Life is Strange) and made a perfect experience for me. I haven’t felt as satisfied by the story in a video game as that in a long time.
I'm happy you enjoyed you time with those games. If you even want to dip into the SMT series for the same (and more) gameplay I'd recommend starting with SMT 4 for the 3DS. Give it a shot, you might like it.
While SMT4 is a great game if your starting on the 3ds i would argue that devil survivor overclocked or DS2RB should be played first to help you adjust to SMT games
@@zachh2864 Personally I'd say Nocturne or DDS. The Devil Survivor's are great, but Devil Survivor is brutal in the late game, and doesn't really teach you about mainline gameplay.
As much as I'm sure I'll finish the video in a moment, just finished the Persona 4 section and I feel rather inspired at the moment before these thoughts leave me. Persona 4's my favorite game of all time. I first played it when I was 16, which... man, that panned out well, didn't it? To not get too weighty for the TH-cam comments section of all things, I found the struggles that the characters were going through - and most specifically, Kanji's and Naoto's - to hit closer than anything else ever had. The ability to speak to those characters, to invest myself in them and see their own resolutions and desires to grow, influenced me in ways so intrinsic to how I view the world that I don't have the words to describe it. Until that point, I'd used video games as my favorite medium, something I could be entertained by, learn from, immerse myself in. Never before had I felt it heal or see it encourage growth. The feelings you expressed - that drive to see the characters achieve the resolutions they're seeking, that pain of having to leave the game behind - are so earnestly put. There is no game I love seeing others play and experience than this one, as the ability to talk about it, see what they learned, who they like and what resonates with them. So I am very, very glad to see how much you ended up enjoying the game. I have PLENTY of questions and little discussion bits I wanna ask just based on your impressions expressed, and I don't agree on everything (I prefer the characters staying underleveled so that you can't just plow through dungeons using them as secondary SP sources, and think that the backtracking through dungeons reinforces the limitations that SP establishes, you don't even MENTION how dating Naoto would break Kanji's heart, jerk), but more than that... just hearing these experiences is always so encouraging. And I have to thank you, so much, for sharing them. I suppose I'll watch the rest of the damn video now.
I played P3 first but man Persona 4 was really something on its own it really is a good ass game with character and story and playing it when i was in highschool was just the right time for it thats first play through sticks with you for life even after Persona 5 i still look back at P4 and all the great times that game gave me including both animes and spinoff lol
I love persona 4 the most, just because when someone gets sent into the tv, they have to face their worst sides. It easily tops 5 because of its lovable characters and amazing story where they truly feel like you’re against something no one can defeat, and truly makes the truth impossible to reach.
I really love this video, and come back to it because it captures so well how personal and meaningful these games are. The investment you obviously had in these games comes through in the gushing, complaints, and observations. It feels really sincere and wonderfully nostalgic.
I'll never forget how I got introduced to this series. Summer of 2007, and im chillin at my house playing KH2 for the umpteenth time. And my doorbell rings. My best friend at the time is standing outside and he's holding the game case to Persona 3 at the door's window. The second I open the door he bursts in, saying how I gotta check this game out. The only elevator pitch he gives is that he says the characters shoot themselves. Understandably, my response is pretty much a "lolwut?" But I was intrigued. So we put his copy in my PS2, and I started my own save file. He had already made it a considerable way through the game but was happy to spend that entire afternoon watching me experience the game for the first time, as well as walk me through the sim mechanics. We spent the whole afternoon getting me started on the game. I made it all the way to the first full moon boss. Needless to say, I was hooked. The following day, I went to my local game store and used up my allowance to buy my own copy. I played ghat game all summer and my friend and I gushed about it for weeks, sharing each other's progress and discussing strategies when we'd get stuck. It was amazing. I never thought a better game was ever going to be made until they announced P4. I was so hyped about it. I got so many of my friends into the series when they were curious about P4, since it had so much publicity. I did the same thing my friend did and told them about P3 and they all loved it. It brought me so much joy to see Persona grow in popularity over time. I hope it continues to be a smash hit of a series. And I definitely can't wait until 6 happens.
Naoto is actually fully female, but aside from that and a few other minor blemishes, it was overall a pretty good video. EDIT: Okay, before any more people try to yell at me saying that I'm wrong, let me explain. Naoto's overall arc revolves around the sexism and age hierarchy of the Japanese Police Force. Because of this, Naoto was forced to adopt a Male image in order to fit in at the police. Eventually, she was thrown into the TV, where her most deepest, darkest feeling, the thought of being born a man instead of a woman, became exaggerated in the form of her Shadow. Thanks to the Investigation Team, she learns that being a woman isn't so bad.
@Hope Bagel listen people can have their opinions on characters calm down you don't own the character to say what people can do with the character and what they cannot
@Hope Bagel listen liam didn't say naoto is male but also if some people have their own headcanons or idea's about the characters that's all they are headcanons and idea's they won't become canon or anything just because the fandom wills so that's why i see headcanon's that divert from canon as valid because sometimes fans just don't like what happens in the actual canon
Galactic Corgi the problem comes when the people that headcanon these characters act like its fact, and get really emotional when you dont agree with their headcanon
There’s really something about this series, isn’t there? I picked up Persona 5 Royal, having heard nothing about the game, and...I don’t think I’ve ever been more impacted by a game. It inspired me to start a TH-cam channel, and it inspired me to explore the creative possibilities that I always WANTED to explore, however, my fear of making a mistake made me constantly tell myself: “I’ll get to that later!”. It’s given me the inspiration to pursue the things I believe in doing RIGHT NOW, and I couldn’t be more grateful to it for that. It also made me appreciate the bonds I have with those closest to me-not that I didn’t already, but it made me appreciate just what it meant to have people in my life; the privilege of that, the power of that, to pick me back up when I fall down and give me the push I need to succeed at everything I believe in doing; this feels like hyperbole, but it’s completely true: this game changed my life. I aspire to create art that has this kind of impact on someone. I loved watching this, and sensing that same passion within you!
I started with persona 4 I was only 13 I’m pretty sure it’s only been a year but seen playing p4 I fell in love with the series and the characters, after hearing heaven and other soundtracks like it I felt something great
Persona 3: Persona based on a legendary ancient Greek musician. Persona 4: Persona based on Japanese god, creator of deity. Persona 5: Just some French boi, baguette moi moi.
Persona 3 & 4 hit the most out of the series. I grew up in a small town until I turned 17, evoking the Persona 4 concepts and setting. I went to college in a big city, and studied abroad in France and Japan, which is where the Persona 3 ideas and concepts blend with me. Persona 3 resonates with me even further due to my struggles with mortality while abroad.
I played the series since P2: Innocent Sin. But boy the series really took off from P3 to P5R. Storywise, battlewise, and game development wise, it’s soooooo good. I also like listening to the Persona soundtrack while writing my PhD thesis.
i absolutely love the persona franchise, after playing all 3 mainstay games (I'm still missing royal bcs i'm a fuckwit), this video made me realise how important these 3 games are to me and I owe it all to you. Excellent video!
Thank you liam. You and the great mind of masahiro sakurai made me try a new game on a whim. Now its one of my favorite series and i cant wait for p5 to launch on switch so i can play it. Most of my summer this year was spent with persona, and i couldnt be happier.
Before I even watch the video I'm just thinking that Persona 4 really got me into JRPGS and really anime So after the Pokemon addiction everyone has in their growing life, I somehow found more anime. Somehow I stumbled upon the Persona 4 anime and loved it with every fiber of my being. It really made me want to explore more anime and considering it was based on a game, play the game. So after years of watching Omega Evolution videos on it, I got a Vita and dived into Persona 4 Golden. Easily one of my favorite games. Probably one of my favorite casts in fiction. Trying to fill the hole left by Persona 4's story left me 2 options. Watch more anime. Play more JRPGS. I did both, though the former more than the latter until lately. Among other things, it led me to FF7, also one of my favorite games and also played on my Vita. Now I'm trying to play all of the other Personas and maybe an SMT or two to capture some of the feelings of Persona 4 or get new ones. Currently going through Persona 3 FES (even though I really like controlling my party) and looking forward to getting a PC where Persona 5 can run more smoothly on emulation. Probably gonna try Persona 2 EP and IS one day and the PSP Persona 1. My god, don't play the PS1 version for anything besides the music. It's so slow man. I really tried. I got fairly far into the game. Like around level 30. It was agony. Anyway, Persona 4 changed me. For that I'm eternally thankful. Also it's a damn good game.
Hey Liam Triforce great video! I been a huge fan of Persona and Megami Tensei for 7 years. So I'm glad you fell in love not only Persona but grew appreciate to turn based JRPGs. Anyway I just wanna say while Nocturne is a great game. It's more gameplay focused than plot focused. If you want to play a game that's more plot and character focused then I recommend Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2. In the video you mentioned Fire Emblem Awakening. If you like that then I also recommend the Devil Survivor games on 3DS. Those games fuses Persona elements with tactical gameplay as well as elements from Megami Tensei as a whole. It's a great game. With the first game tackling things that have aged very well and is scarily accurate to current real life events. That's just my advice you don't have to listen to it if don't want, just what I suggest if you want to branch out and get into Megami Tensei as a whole. I think Nocturne should be saved for a little later.
Persona 5 was the first game that made me cry with the ending because it was over. I felt like saying goodbye to my friends, and it hits even harder now that I moved to another country and left my whole life behind… I’m almost done with P4G for the Switch, and I have a feeling I’m gonna feel the same thing again…
So I just sat and watched this entire thing, and all I can think to say is, for the first time since I beat persona 5, then 3, then 4, I feel like this summed up everything I felt about these games, good bad and otherwise, and how I came to love the series. Watching, or rather hearing, you go through this journey, hearing your thoughts about the series go from curiosity to the same love of the series I'm sure most of us who play them feel, was great to watch and listen to. Thank you for making this video and sharing your persona journey with us.

its been a while since i left a comment. but ever since my friend put me onto persona, i started my very first play through. and i love it! ecstatic so see my favourite game essayist cover a series im beginning to endear
I just finished a 6 hour session of Persona 5 Royal, having finally reached the added, new story content and I saw this being recommended in TH-cam. I'm dead tired, but in such a zone of bliss that I feel like I want to listen to these thoughts and then just fall asleep. And heck. I don't even know who you are, but right now, this title "How I Fell in Love with Persona" intrigues me. Very excited to hear what you think about these wonderful games! (Also, heck yeah. Catherine was my first real acknowledged introduction to Atlus, too. I can already tell I'm going to like this.)
I have never played Persona 4 in my life, yet this video made me care about the game's world, characters and story. Fantastic video, man. Glad I found your channel 😁
The moment with Kanji about him liking things that are feminine reminded me of when some older guy told me, he knows his socks are weird because they have a green and blue design on them and should be women's socks, I lifted my shirt and showed him like dude I wear a pink unicorn belt with rainbows on it and I have a wife, don't be weird about your socks if you like them wear them proudly and forget anyone who says differently.

Jesus, watching this months after personally played through Golden (my first Persona game) and watching a TH-cam play P5 before that, this brought back so many memories, that I actually started to tear up. Fun fact about P4: You can bump into the “Gas-Station Attendant” throughout the game, but only on rainy days. A pretty subtle hint.

And I haven't read anything past that point, 'cause I know you'll say "It'S cAuSe It'Ll NeVeR bE tHe SaMe!"
Imma read the comment afterwards to see if I'm right or not.
Welp, I'm sorry, I can relate to not really haveing friends so, sorry. I'd wanna have good memories, but all my friendships have ended in betrayal from my "friends" so I can't really look back on them fondly, so yeah, I'm soy.
Osinacho GAMER literally my point buddy.. hope it changes for you even if it hasn’t for me.
(Or maybe, just maybe, we can get it on PC... maybe...?)
Persona 3 is one of my favorite games of all time and will forever hold a special place in my heart, especially as my first Persona game.

See ya in 2027 for Persona 6and 2029 for Persona 6: Sparkly Something-or-other.

I find it crazy that the dream from the beginning of Persona 4 was THE FINAL DUNGEON! THE DREAM WAS IZANAMI'S DUNGEON. It never failed to amaze me, the dream in reality, was the dungeon of the final boss.
it was fate
The point of the game is to never turn your back from the truth. Even with the very first thing that happens to you, you could just brush it off and forget about it as if it was just a minor thing that doesn't even matter. But if you were to look into it, you'll see that it isn't just a minor thing and that there's more to it than you realize.
I'm sorry, what was the dream again? I think I missed what you said the first three times, lol
Another great thing about Futaba is that her English VA did a lot of research into tendencies of people with Autism and such to help portray the character Futaba better.

your feeling with persona 4 was pretty much my teen years with this game. It was a comforting game for a moment in my life where i had no friends and away from my brother after my parents divorced. It really helped me during my toughest years.
My absolute favorite moment from p4 is when it just gives you a list of every named character and goes pick one.

@@rng-mos2314 Cringe gatekeeper

I thought the same.shes not trans she just thinks dressing that way helps people focus on here detective work than her looks
Its injecting western politics into an eastern game. While it's annoying about how wrong he was about it, at least it shows that the persona games do a damn good job at making you think hard about topics of life you deem important, like he did.
@@maximumrpg3707 ya he doesn't know japanese culture enough to why she would choose to hide her femininity
Naoto isn't trans, she just wants people to take her seriously in a culture that normally ignores women completely.

people sometimes fail to understand that morgana is very insecure for not having what he considers a worthy goal to stay with the phantom thieves, as well as being eventually replaced on the team. he hides that by acting overly confident in himself and ryuji gets to be the butt of his mighty attitude most of the time. his temper tantrum during okumura's arc was bound to happen, considering that futaba took his role as the navigator and had been doing a much better job than him. it's an understandable behavior, but i think that both he and ryuji should've apologized for being assholes to each other, which should've been a turning point in their friendship. i actually think the anime handled this scene quite well, surprisingly, although i still think the timing was really bad because mona ended up stealing the spotlight from haru and her character arc

@@O_Tucano you care enaugh to comment this.
Honestly Maruki is in my Mount Rushmore of greatest video game villains.
antagonists*
Persona 4 is my favourite game of all time and has been I played it in 2015
Its a perfect video the only thing is that naoto is fully female as she says at rank 8 of her SL if I'm not wrong.
P1 protag doesn’t have a canon name, like why?
Nic Anastasi Because canon names are stupid? Duh
Nic Anastasi I'm pretty sure it's Naoya Toudou.
Storywise and characterwuse P2 is far superior to the later games with P3 probably being second.
M.A.D p2's story is definitely up there but p3's always has a special place in my heart
Aigis is such a well written character. I don't even want to romance her cause I don't see her that way, and she doesn't need it at all
Also Akinari. Might be the single best side character social link in the entire series. No good Tora is the only one that comes close for me.
I thought P3FES had that?
@@shinji2898 Social Link is an added addition to Persona 3 FES, which gets carried over to Portable. It wasn't in the origninal version.
She's is probably the most well written and developed character in the series.
it’s cool how in persona 3 the characters battle portraits look down and in persona 4 they look up
My favorite character in all of Persona is Maruki.
I loved P4's story.
A small town with a murder mystery, a weird rumor about some channel, and slowly glooming *fog* makes it an amazing story
"Fuuka doesn't really do anything in the plot."
That's not at all true, her persona awakening literally saved the party keeping up with the switches of the shadows weaknesses.
She sensed that the shadow in the mall was under them and they had to go below to fight it.
Helped them figure out brekaing the right mirrors was the way to find the lovers true form.
Literally used her computer skills to help fix the distorted messed up video for yukari so she could see her father's final message properly
And genuinely was the glue that held the group together with her being positive and willing to lend an ear to the others of the group cause they were her family.
Yukiko did do something, she was the most cool-headed person when it came to the Namatame case.
Fuuka gets so much unnecessary hate I never understood it. Plus she let me play The Snow Queen while grinding Tartarus
I was gonna type like the same thing. Like what did Chie actually do in persona 4 other than not be best girl?
Love the video, love the series. I'm mind blown by Akechi blowing anyone's mind at being the bad guy though. It was so obvious that it completely distracted me from the real mind blow. Igor. Now that was insane.
It’s funny you spent your summer doing the same thing I did. Falling in love with the persona series.
The way you describe the bosses in Persona 4 is pretty much how every Shin Megami Tensei game works ngl
This was a passionate little display of one of my favorite game series. Thanks for covering it. I liked ur expression
During the P3 segment you didn't mention Akinari (Sun). I'm wondering if you missed him, as imo he is the best Social Link in the entire series
his social link made me cry :((
He is indeed the best one in the series imo and I feel like he perfectly establishes persona 3’s theme and message
Akinari was indeed the best s link in the entire series
:P
What really made me cry was that in Persona 4 there was a call back to the Pink Alligator in Kanji's social link, and Adachi's in Golden.
The thing drew me to Persona 5’s cast so much is that they all remind me of parts of myself
They’re people who the public sees as punks, but they don’t let that get to them and show their true colors.

What an incredible video. A brilliant journey told expertly and a perfect representation of the ideal experience of these games
I watched the whole video… your passion for this series mans me super happy I can’t wait for persona 6!
Persona 5 is my first, and have gotten me into this!

My only justification for dating everyone in Persona 4 is that Yu’s Velvet Room is a literal PimpMobile.
yeah those seats are deluxe
romance everyone because you like the characters : nahh
romance everyone to get them into your PimpMobile : HELL YEAHHHHHH
that's a valid excuse my dude
Your passion for the games clearly comes through in your voice. Glad to see you enjoyed the games so much.
The Devil Survivor's are great, but Devil Survivor is brutal in the late game, and doesn't really teach you about mainline gameplay.
that "I like ya cut, g" joke made me laugh way more than it should have
amazing analysis, btw.
This comment is golden!

It was interesting visiting Tokyo a few months after playing P5. I walked into many places that I felt like I was in the world of P5. The realism wow
Some people have headcanons about naoto and i think that's fine tbh

Man this video is pure excellence and i can relate to all of the emotions you show in this video. Man this series holds a special place in my heart.
Before I even watch the video I'm just thinking that Persona 4 really got me into JRPGS and really anime
So after the Pokemon addiction everyone has in their growing life, I somehow found more anime.
A very powerful discussion video, thank you for this, as another person regaining hope and inspiration through this series, I loved this entire video
Thanks for the advice! I think that's where I'll start then :)
Persona 5 was the first game that made me cry with the ending because it was over. I felt like saying goodbye to my friends, and it hits even harder now that I moved to another country and left my whole life behind… I’m almost done with P4G for the Switch, and I have a feeling I’m gonna feel the same thing again…
so happy you’re getting into megami tensei!! after you do nocturne and persona 2, i HIGHLY recommend smt 4 on the 3ds if you haven’t played it yet.
