The sentiment "Throughout the game, you see everyone lose someone close to them, EXCEPT FUUKA" is often used to critique her arc and say that she doesn't mesh with the themes. People completely miss that her resolution moment with Natsuki is built on the fact that while the cast has all lost someone incredibly close to them, Fuuka still has her parents. It's a call to action. For Fuuka to reach out to the people she still has left and make the most of the time they still have. Her resolution is one of the most important ones in the game for exactly that reason.

    • @bluebay1031
      @bluebay1031 ปีที่แล้ว +14

I’m not sure about that. Fuukas a great character and I do agree that her resolution is just as important as the other main cast social links, I just don’t think said resolution is “it’s your responsibility to build a bridge with the people who are actively causing you strife”

@@bluebay1031If you're talking about her relationship with Natsuki, then you're gonna be shocked to learn that people can change. Even those who used to cause you strife.
The message of her story isn't that you should break bread with those who wish to see you in pain, or cause you misery. It's what op said
Also, Fuuka wasn't the one who reached out to mend things, or offer friendship irc

It doesn't have to be death, Persona 3 is really about life and the end, different forms of end that is seen throughout the social links too. Natsuki moved out of the town that made her realize that her time with Natsuki in school has ended, but it made her realize that no matter where they might be they are connected and also realized her persona is not the manifestation of her weakness but her desire to connect to people and see their hearts, thats why Juno's eyes finally opened

Persona 3 has the best themes and story! It's really hard to beat, and imo neither p4 or p5 came any close
P3 made me care about the characters and actually made you feel as if the protagonist was its own individual, and you're going on a Journey with him. The ending only emphasizes that.

You mentioned the positives while overlooking the negatives
      P3/p3fes negatives:
      Bland level design
Terrible s.links, lack of slinks for many of the SEES team.
Cannot fully control party during combat
      Dumb ai
Story falls flat just after midway point and only gets somewhat interesting towards the end
Some of the music was not good at all.

Yessss knock down is your friend. I love the reason FES has AI-control of party members. I always approached it from an "individual psychology" perspective, as in all the P3 members very much feel like separate individuals from the MC compared to the later Persona entries. Like the devs were going for based on the big P3 interview. I think it also means a lot that the male (and original) protag doesn't have SLs with the guys, and yet it doesn't mean "they're not friends." (There's actually a lot more I can say about this given the memento mori theme, the protag's starting demeanor, and the willing sacrifice at the end... and how the FemC route can offer a different perspective in large part *because* of how the male MC is portrayed, but I'm cutting all this short for brevity's sake lol).
But yeah, it's a great point that it's not always easy to work together, even if you all have the same goal, and P3 incorporate that team dynamic feel very well. I know you bring up how P3 just feels very "real life"/organic, and this battle system is just another one of those reasons for me. Having played a lot of team sports and been in a lot of different music ensembles growing up, it just highlights that irl feel that you have to **communicate** with your teammates to get shit done. You all want to accomplish the same thing, but you all have different roles you need to fulfill to make it happen, and people can't read minds! Like speaking up when 3rd trombone part in jazz needs to play louder so the harmonies are brought out more. The player themself might not even realize that's what the ensemble needs rn.
And dude yes, thanks for sharing more personal anecdotes with us like eating out in the Mitsuru section. I just want to say, it's cruel to shame people for things they don't know or have never experienced. 99% of people are doing their best with what they're given/based on their life experiences up to that point. It's already embarrassing finding out that something you didn't know is considered "common knowledge," so why be a shithead and make someone feel even dumber by making fun of them for it? "No wayyyyy you haven't done/don't know _______?!?" 🙃Not saying this happened to you in that particular instance, but this is just something I wanted to say lol.
On that note, HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT ABOUT SHINJI AND THE FEMC TIMELINE SHIT. YOU'RE WRONG. 😂 (I agree, the chemistry is sweet, but I **am** one of those "I think it lessens the impact of memento mori and the Greek tragedy-inspiration of P3" folk lol. I think the same about the Chidori-Junpei thing in January ngl).
Speaking of P3's Greek-tragedy inspiration, the social links very much echo that aesthetic really well, since one of the major aspects of that genre is the **tragic flaw.** Sure, all three Hashino Persona games have social links revolve around reverse-tarot archetype learning how to incorporate the upright traits, meaning all these characters have room to grow... but P3 above all three has pretty much every SL have a legit **flaw** at the start.
Thank you for defending Mamoru btw. You just straight up Mamoru'd Mamoru and I can't thank you enough.
Unconditional love is such an interesting concept. Like I agree, a relationship is a two-way street. Both parties will have a boundary, whether they think they have one or not. Ideally people will communicate and be clear about their boundaries **if** a time ever comes when one person keeps violating the other's, but even then things often don't work out unfortunately. With that said, the concept people call "unconditional love" realistically to me means something along the lines of: you can still wish that person gets the help they need/finds a way to change someday and live a fulfilling life, even if that means you won't be in it anymore. That's my take on it anyhow. I get we all think differently when it comes to the nature of human relationships.
The month of December definitely plays into the Apathy syndrome aspect of this game. There are always gonna be times when life feels this way, and this works in a meta-sense where the player as well has to "slog through this month"/the difficult times and/or boring times (whichever way a person tends to view this month), to get to January and the apex of this fantastic game.
and yesssss, JRPGs have **always** echoed anime tropes of the time. SAY IT LOUDER FOR THOSE IN THE BACK. It's like... Japanese archetypes will be reflected in ALL their different forms of media or something LOL.
Persona 3 gang rise uppppppp. Incredible work. Thanks for doing this service for P3 and all us stans of it 🙏

Too bad that the AI part members don't make for a good system. Consistency is key, and they fail to do that. The fact they try to justify bad design by thematics is a joke, you can imagine their personalities and how they'd act as part of a team just by move sets and stats along with their battle dialogue, without having to see them do stupid choices that no player with a brain would make, even when you demonstrate to the AI what they need to do. You can say its realistic to how teammates would work in real life, but coughing, sneezing and forgetting what you were saying is also common in real life, and that's not usually a main part of a game, simply because its not good sign for an experience.
The death scene was stupid anyways, not just because Junpei apparently died to a regular bullet rather than something truly threatening, but because he didn't even immediately die, not to mention how much time they gave Takaya to act. Like, if he didn't instantly die, then just use healing magic. You can use it in the overworked, and nothing in the game suggests you can't heal people with Personas otherwise so that's dumb, along with Shinji's death. The Greek tragedy aspect is such a snore, considering how many tragedies were just not truly addressed or caused because the party has no brain cells.
Apathy Syndrome sucks compared to the Shadowmen in Persona 2, there's barely any reason to care about this, because no significant characters are affected by the condition, nor does the syndrome really worsen like it did with the Shadowmen condition did with Eikichi's friends. It's just a detached reason as to why you want to kill the shadows, rather than something that brings good depth, without showing worsening consequences outside of it spreading. Forcing the player into slogging through boring sections of a game in order to make meta feelings only works in a select few situations like the ladder scene in MG 3 or some of the gameplay of Spec Ops: The Line, which put them to set up some truly harrowing or climactic moments in the series. It doesn't work in an RPG like this, especially not when the majority of the game barely has any antagonistic pressure, stakes, or interesting story development.
As for the tropes, if they did less intrusively, or done better character writing while using those tropes, then things would be different wouldn't they?

55:15 - thank you for bringing that up!! One thing I love about Yukari is how impulsive she can be at times. She acts on emotion, and it often puts her at odds with people. Justified or not, she's always able to reflect and realize that maybe the way she approached the conflict was not the best. It takes a lot to reflect on your actions and apologize. I really admire her for that.

  • @RosesChrist
    @RosesChrist ปีที่แล้ว +76

6:44 is why this is my favorite social sim persona, everyone took situations in a more realistic manner. Akihiko, doesn't go hog wild. After seeing the main character awaken. He's most likely thinking, "who did we let into our dorm?" maybe even; "This sophomore might prove useful". I appreciate Persona 4 & 5 trying to be entertaining any way they can, but a scenario in those games would include someone screaming, "A PERSONA NO WAY, like DuDE he can do that?". Akihiko's face is so perfect. No words, it's a real mood-setter for his awakening. The whole game is littered with amazing mood-setters.
As well as, the characters never disagree with each other in the other games, 4 have like one time that happens and 5 only have a feuding moment to make a Morgana arc. 3 really makes you feel like saving the world isn't your only issue.

I especially appreciate the Yukari and Junpei sections since people are way too harsh on their dynamic; they clearly care about each other despite their bickering. The music section was also great since the soundtracks contribute so much to the tones of the male and female route. I like how the male soundtrack is more chill while the female is peppier since it makes the female route and protagonist feel even more unique. Awesome video.

I was 32 years old when i spent the night at a hotel for the very first time. I'd been to hostels and motels and (cheap) vacation homes before but NEVER an actual hotel. I was on a roadtrip with a friend and he got sick and he said oh lets just stay at this hotel for 1 night. He laughed for 5mins when i wanted to bring my sleeping bag and towels up to the room. I didn't KNOW hotels had towels and linens.
My parents were very poor working class. And so we never went on any expensive vacations. I went on a plane ONCE when i was 16 and that was for a school trip we only managed to pay for with the help of my grandparents. The second time i was 22 years old and going to study abroad for 6 months. I just haven't done a lot of the stuff that people my age usually know how to do. Book flights, book hotels, know how to behave at a hotel breakfast buffet, know how to navigate an airport, buy anything that costs more than a couple of hundred bucks (i get such bad anxiety i start crying if i have to pay for a big ticket item).
The important thing is that people are trying to learn knew things and that we're not letting our childhoods define us forever.

the segment on yukari is important, so many times i'll see people dismiss yukari as a stone cold bitch when she really only gets angry when it's warranted. the game literally goes out of its way to show that she is a sweet and caring person, so when people call her a bitch for simply standing up for herself after being sexually objectified and call junpei a bro after doing said objectifying, it begs the question as to what the real reason people hate her is.

Persona 3 feels like a game that isn't afraid of being itself. It knows what it wants to be and does it with the utmost confidence. It has a very clear theme and message that may not be delivered super subtly, but is still done very powerfully. The gameplay is unique, from it's predecessors, to it's successors, and even it's contemporaries. The game overall gives you a one of a kind experience regardless of your background in media. One aspect of the tactics system of Persona 3 that people don't seem to realise, is that each character's AI actually acts based on their personality.
If you set them up into Act Freely, and observe how they act, you'll realise:
    * Just how freaking reckless Junpei is 😂
    * How caring Yukari is.
    * How tactical Mitsuru attempts to be.
    * And the absolute machine that Koromaru is when protecting you from danger.
Each character has tendencies of their own that they lean into. And if you for whatever reason need them to act differently and override those tendencies (or lean harder into them), then you have Tactics.

P3's story and themes made it one of my favorites in the series. It made up for whatever gameplay qualms I may have. Personally, I have P3Fes and P5R at a tie for best Persona game.(I haven't played Femc route and looking forward to it!) Both games had really moving bits that made me cry too. Hard for me to pick one.
I agree with P3 having the best cast too. I loved everyone! And you hit the nail - I don't think simply being like best friends is interesting enough to me or a great criteria to rank which cast is the best on. I much preferred P3's dynamic and I would actually like to see more complex relationships like that in P6. It's how they eventually got close only towards the latter part of the game that I liked. The development of their relationships.
I love how you explained Yukari. She's my favorite girl from P3, 4 and 5.
Thanks for this great in-depth video!

Yess!! I think you've pretty much touched upon all the reasons why this is my favorite of the persona games! I am one of those folks who do love Aigis jfjgig but it's okay if you didn't really care for her as much! I'm also very glad you're not one of those fans who hate Yukari; you brought up a lot of points about her character and how complex and realistic her character really is and I appreciate it! Also same with Junpei!
I will be honest though and say that I still have yet to finish p2 ... both games, so idk my favorite could change possibly. Persona 3 was my first of the persona games so there might also be a little bit of bias there, but I think for me it also was good timing when I first played it and since then it held a special place in my heart💙!

I had a fairly similar intro to the series and Atlus as a whole. My roommate had a TV in our dorm and at night he'd play Persona 5. I remember watching him and asking him about it. Fast forward a few years later, and while I was looking for something new to play I picked up P5 and have been into the series since. Played 4 a few months later, and just this January I played P3. Another friend showed me how to emulate games, so it's onto 1 and 2.
Before I knew it I played Nocturne and Catherine as well, and I'm halfway thru Soul Hackers 2.

firstly this is an amazing write up of one of my favorite games of all time. i agree with you on so many points. it's such a strong entry, the cast is incredible and absolutely the best written in the series, and i actually 10000% agree with you on the party control issue... not only is it NOT EVEN THAT DIFFICULT TO USE, but i think it really helps tell the story through the gameplay and people overlook that a lot. secondly your thoughts on shinjiro/femc are so real and also mirror mine perfectly. they definitely got married and lived happily ever after there is nothing bad that happens to either of them again :)))) but fr, you're absolutely right. saving shinjiro doesn't go against the core themes imo - if anything, it helps solidify them. yes, death is inevitable. yes, people die. no, that does not mean we should just give up on everything because that fate is inescapable.

It's honestly kinda funny (and refreshing mind you) that Yukari gets an extra long segment due to her being misunderstood by the broader community. I was indifferent towards her, but your segment on her character really put into perspective the amount of care put into each and every member of SEES. Bravo.
On that note, Aigis is my favourite P3 character, and you were spot on when talking about her. She doesn't really come into her own until the very end of the game, however it is my opinion that the moments where she does shine, she shines the brightest. It also sort of helps that the P3 movies zero-in on the relationship between Aigis and the MC more, but perhaps that was intrusive towards many people who aren't Aigis fanboys.

The only good thing about P5's AI: Morgana's actually prioritises healing Ann over anyone else.
I normally don't find the Morgana simp jokes funny, but when they're written into the actual CODE? Amazing.
Yukari gets a lot of demonization for the whole 'Fuuka was pressured to join' phase. I think a lot of people are just mentally conditioned to believe the JRPG party are "the good guys" and therefore she has no logical reason to be so against someone joining, but they can't see the characters' perspective: this is a shady group that's been keeping secrets and risks their lives on a weekly basis, and they're forcing another teenager in right after she got stuck in Tartarus for weeks unprepared.
lol, you and I are on the same page about Mitsuru's social link feeling like a rom-com... BUT that turned me against it as I've seen a LOT of bad rom-coms in my day.

    • @egbertmilton4003
      @egbertmilton4003 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I agree that Yukari gets demonised way too much. In fact, I believe she's more correct. She more righteous than Mitsuru. She's kind of right about her. Even if you can argue that Fuuka wasn't pressured, the fact that she allowed a 10 year old on the shadow death squad really throws Mitsuru's morals into question. Especially since she knows who Ken is to her and SEES' history. It's not like the Ikutsuki forced her, he doesn't have more power than her in SEES, especially as she's the actual leader of the combat part of SEES and the daughter of SEES actual leader. Unless, Mitsuru's dad was demonstrated to want this for whatever reason, it just make Mitsuru seem worse, without it ever being properly commented on. Yukari doesn't even properly question how fucked it is that they are get 10 year old child, an orphan no less, involved in life threatening business.

Great video, love P3 but mostly I just came to agree with your appreciation of Mitsuru, best girl for sure, I do love Aigis (and really, the whole cast in general) but Mitsuru is absolutely awesome... I may just have to go and replay the game now :X
The only thing that is bad about her is the requirements neccessary and how late she unlocks as a social link, meaning if you dont go by a guide or dont know the game really well, you may even entirely miss out on her social link, or at least large parts of it, not to mention her christmas date. And while it makes sense, its still a bit off putting that you need to be so intelligent for her to even consider hanging out with you, even if she does mean it in a good way for your future.
There are people who dislike Mass Destruction? Its so freaking lit. The music in this game is absolutely amazing, I replayed it several times but I cant help but cry at the credits song and the music in the city after you defeat Nyx is also incredible, they got the tone just right.
I also dont get the hate for Yukari, but in my mind it always mostly stemmed from her actions in the Answer rather than her actions in the main game because she does always try to make up for her shortcomings, it also never really seemed like there is any real bad blood between her and Junpei so I just took it as bit of a friendly banter, I dont know, I like her, imo P3 cast is the strongest of the games.
And yea, this is probably the only jrpg I can confidently say really did the power of friendship thing well, its almost in every jrpg but its usually so obvious and so overt that it kinda ruins any and all feelings of danger or stakes, here yea, power of friendship saves the day, but not only is it earned but it also still comes at a cost. Also... BURN MY BREAAAAAD!

"Shinjiro is the best romance in Persona" SO BASED!!!!! SO TRUE!!!!!!
A lot of people dismissed his social link as just pandering for Shinjiro fangirls and I'm glad you're not one of them. Sure, as a certified Shinji enjoyer I might be biased but watching someone with suicidal tendencies (even already planned the day of his death) realize that there's something to look forward to in life even if it's small like cooking for your friends or hearing your friend's ghost stories is beautiful. It fits P3's theme so well. Dare I say that his romance route was integrated to the theme as well as Aigis. His friendship route works too, but let's face it, it's impossible to NOT romance him lol
Also I really doubt the supposed P3 remake will add FEMC's route (it's probably just gonna be P3 FES with P5 graphics), but if they do, I really would love to see Shinji as the wild card in The Answer. People who want to keep Shinji longer in combat will be happy and I think it's interesting to explore his possible survivor guilt as FEMC dies instead of him (in the NG+ route it's even sadder since she dies in his arms, just shortly after he woke up from his coma). Also Aki and Shinji solo fight would be cool. It's still extremely unrealistic considering that Atlus would need more resources to write it (P-Studio is already very busy working on Persona 6 at the same time) and it's easier to just switch MC for FEMC in the existing The Answer but one can dream

I finally finished your vid, after finishing P3P. Man I was ugly crying for 20 mins getting to the rooftop with Aigis, and the ending song I can't even listen to that song without crying (especially the English vo). I am glad after 2 years after I finished the game, the emotion and my love for the game is still there. I love Persona 3 top 3 games of all time the Ps2 graphics/vibs give me nostalgia to my childhood which I never played this game. I don't know a ton on P3R but at least people can experience the story and go back to playing P3Fes or P3P.
Also getting of Reddit/Watching P4 TH-camrs definitely helped my mental in that gab of not replaying p3

I love how you waited to use the great seal to the line "spit it out son, Game's over!"

Imagine actually making me feel like trying P3 with AI party members. Also thank you for pointing out the 'exposition dump' complaint. It's complete bullshit and ever since Simply Dad's video I've heard it parroted with the same flawed points. Overall though, this game is great. I genuinely just played it because I wanted more Persona after beating Persona 5 Strikers and game had a weird effect on me. It's one of the few games that can genuinely bring me to tears and I love it

I definitely felt that with the Mamoru and Kazushi links. I'm a professional wrestler and it was my dream turned reality. Due to upcoming back surgery for early next year, I have to leave something I love so much. Or at least the part of the job I love so much. So I'm living it up and enjoying the time while I can until the surgery. Also persona 3 is a game that means a lot to me, partly due to the circumstances in which I played it.

YOU TIMED THE GREAT SEAL TO "GIVE IT UP SON GAMES OVER" TOO??
Honestly that part is just so fucking hype.

About the coziness of the Tarturus dungeon, I agree there. This really actually fits for a lot of JRPGs, expecially PS2 ones. You can just sit back and mindlessly do random battles or in P3s case climb the tower. Well of course you'd have to be prepared for bosses, but it is still relaxing in its own little way. Same thing to the Velvet Room which even applies to P4 and 5. Even SMT with its Cathedral of Shadows. Also I need to replay this game. Want to give this more of a second chance. Maybe has to do with a certain 3rd game of a series on a Nintendo Switch thats a JRPG and also has themes of death that is now one of my favorite games ever.

One thing i love about aigis is that she always seems to know more than she lets out, during the scene after you seal nyx, shes the only one that seems to really understand what happened. I just kept thinking back to searching for that cat with her. How we kept looking for it until the old lady said "shes probably looking for a place to die you dont have to keep looking".
Learning about what it means to be alive and what it means to die staying with you til your final moments crying as shes telling you how much she still wants to be with you. It feels painfully real.

It’s really ironic that this is considered the “edgy” persona game, when I feel like P5 is much more fitting of that title with the whole “rebelling against shitty adults” thing it does

it miiiiiight have something to do with the fact that you summon personas in a very specific extremely extremely edgy way

@@noisepollution4473and with the different art style.
P5 seems to have a much more vibrant color pallet with less grey tones and stronger individual coloration
While P3 seems to rely on a more flat color palette.

honestly aside from the ai actually being pretty competent and emphasizing leader/team synergy with your party members, i think being able to see the turn cycle of *every* person in battle instead of just only the person thats turn is next like the other games do makes ai party worth it for me lol

i saw this video a while go on my feed but i wanted to save it as i didn't finish persona 3 at the time. coming back to the video finishing it, persona 3 really is an experience that i cherish a lot, especially after i was nervous about the game because people kept saying the characters were bad or that it was the "worst" gameplay wise. im also really happy that you gave a fair judgement of the femc route, i always encounter a lot of people saying her as a character "ruins" persona 3 but i have the headcanon that femc still is as depressed as makoto, she just has a different way of expressing it through hiding it. great video overall!.

P3 was my first Persona game, and tied for my favorite with 5, as it hit me right when I needed it back in 2020. Watching this makes me want to go back and start a new play through.

when i was younger (15 yr old) i used to think that yukari was really a btch, a really mean girl, specially towards junpei, a decade later i replay the game and come to the realization that she was, in fact a very likeable person, that was, such a strange yet, good feeling, it make me realize how i grow and how dump dump i was has a teenager

Agreed Persona 3 has the strongest main cast in the series because every characters feel like an actual individual with their own struggle and ideology. unlike P4 and P5 where everybody already trust you from the starts and their entire characteristic are revolve around you.
