So glad to see you riding the wave of optimism and positive energy! Your videos have been extremely helpful- thank you for making the effort. 🙏 I started my MS (LxDET) at WGU and I'm getting through quickly + successfully thanks to your tips. Getting my doctorate is a pipe dream at this point (I have chronic illness too) but you inspire me. Stay well, we're all rooting for you!

LK, thanks for your thoughtful comment! Comments like yours motivate me to keep sharing my journey and helping others. It's cool that you're in the new learning experience design program at WGU! Seems like an improved version of the learning and technology program I took there.
I never thought I could do a doctorate, but here I am, climbing that mountain! School helps me not dwell on life's challenges; it's almost like a hobby now. Thanks again!

Great words and perspective. I'm a few months away from starting the program and already have imposter syndrome. I was in the same position 1 year ago as I was exploring master's programs. Through the support and motivation of the CBE community, including your videos, I enrolled at WGU in Feb 2023 and completed my master's in July 2023. Some of it for me is the fear of the unknown, but I also have never been a strong writer, so I understand that I have to reconcile with the fact that I have to find a way to be successful at something that's not my strong suit. Thanks as always.

That's great that you're about to start! Imposter syndrome is a common feeling among doctoral students, and I get that. I felt it too. It's something some of prospective students in the Facebook groups talk about as they share our anticipation. Though, that worry tends to fade once you dive into the program. The initial courses are pretty manageable, and the expectations aren't as high as they get later on. You gradually work up to more advanced academic writing. The first few assignments are straightforward and reflective. I know many South College doctoral students worry about their writing skills at the beginning, but the good news is that the instructors will give feedback, especially on APA, in those initial courses everyone takes. So, you'll get the support you need.

Wow congrats on finishing in 4 months! It's amazing to hear more and more stories of people accelerating their studies.
And thank you, the doctorate is going great. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel at this point

Great perspective.. honestly though, I am running out of gas.. 45 days in to the DBA program and I am on the last competency in the first course. I hate the idea of dropping out, but I've lost motivation.

Nelson, good to hear from you. You've been a great support during those times when I was losing motivation. The DBA and EdD at South College can feel like a never-ending marathon, but it does have an end point. Usually it's a lot sooner than other doctorates. Taking it one assignment at a time and understanding the relevance of what you're working on helps (me at least). I find the specialization courses more enjoyable too. I just kept thinking "let's get to the specialization and I'll go from there". I was close to quitting too. I took a break and somehow got back in the game. Maybe you need some time off after each course. Might help refresh you.

@@lifebyjustinthanks man. I sucked it up and powered through. Just wrapped up a course and will take turkey week to relax and then get back at it.
I've got to remember that this is a marathon and not a sprint.

@@NelsonRose 100%. Once I stopped sprinting and thinking I had to, I started enjoying the program and learning more. And I still get assignments done consistently but without all the mental stress.

Does the program have tests you have to take or is the program mostly papers and presentations? I'm preparing to start and am torn between Capella University and South College. I don't like exams and would like to avoid them as much as possible.

The EdD program included case studies, reflections, and various academic tasks such as annotated bibliographies, literature reviews, and research papers. All assignments were either in written or presentation format. There were the occasional visual summaries like infographics but that wasn't common. And there were no tests.
