      Nice, glad you liked it! Not sure what was worse, playing Lost Levels 8 times or making that crappy Mario animation.

    Great review. You’ve missed one new sound: the wind blowing sound.

    Max lives is 127 (because 0 is also a value of course), and it is indeed a good idea to count only up to like 110-120, because if you are too close to the maximum, you can get a few more lives by playing normally and overflow into -128.
    Also, about the first Hammer Bro of 8-3... the best is to do a big jump a little earlier. That way you end up on top of the hidden block (yes, it's not an invisible block, but a regular solid brick block), and from there just one more simple jump over the Bro.

    27:24 That pit with the paratroopas is doable with the star. You just have to jump full speed at the spring and land on the back half of it. You barely land on it, but I can honestly say I only miss that jump when I mess up landing on the spring right

    The song that starts at 40:29 is "Flashbeagle" (from the 1984 Peanuts TV special "It's Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown"). The singers of that song are Joey Scarbury (best known for singing "Believe It Or Not," the theme song for the 1981-83 TV series The Greatest American Hero) and Desiree Goyette.

    Great vid! I just finished the FDS version for the first time in years. What a ride. Funny thing is it's not like Mario 2 USA was all that easy in comparison, it's still a tough game towards the end.

    This is actually a really fun and engaging game if you have save states and the ability to rewind like with Switch Online. I have avoided playing this game for years due to the sheer brutality of the difficulty, but now that I can rewind mistakes, I can see them coming and actually have fun with the game. And yes I utilized the hell outta that function, but it was worth it, I am now playing the post game bonus stages and still haven't beat them yet,I'm on stage D-4, which I think is the last one.

    Yes, 128 is indeed the correct maximum, though in SMBDX it's one less (127), because they fixed the coding so it's not based on negative checking.
    In both SMAS and SMBDX, they fixed it so it does not go past $7F (127). In SMAS, here's how the extra life counting was done:
    1. The lives counter ($075A) is initially loaded into A (LDA).
    2. The same RAM address is then incremented (INC) by one.
    3. A CMP value of #$80 (which triggers bit D7) is checked to make sure the player's lives don't get past here, and then sets the carry flag if result met; otherwise, this part of the routine will end early (via a BCC, or branch if carry clear).
    4. If the carry flag is set, we then load A with #$7F and store (STA) it in $075A to make it stop at 128 lives, and then return from subroutine (RTL).

    A few years back when I first played Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels for my Game & Watch, the one that was released in 2020, I remember making it to the world 6 and dying. Not sure if I had any good time with this game nor if I ever plan to play this game again, but due to the similarity of the graphics, whenever I play the first Super Mario Bros. game, I pretty much pretend playing the Lost Levels.

    30:00 So, your telling me that Nintendo intended to use glitches in their own game back then but not when Mario Maker players does the exact same thing for their own levels..?

    Kinda like in SMB3 where odd screen if your running at max speed before the end of level box and jump at a 45 degree level You will always get a star. Maybe if they did that with the paratropper cycle.

    Not exactly. Arcade games were required to be very, very hard. After all it was believed that if people beat the arcade game they would walk away from it. So they wanted to make sure that this wouldn't happen too quickly.
    Trail and error level design was almost mandatory in arcades. It needed to be pretty much impossible to beat it all in one go no matter how good you were.

    • @Ageleszly
      @Ageleszly ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you can't generalize this approach to the whole arcade culture, there was a trend for sure but you have to judge the games on a case by case basis.
      Back then I played on an old Shinobi Arcade Machine on 1999 and I was able to beat the whole thing despite my young age, the game is very hard but there are few trial & sections. It's absolutely well polished with an high degree of tactical approach, once again I confirmed this a few years ago with the MAME emulator and also the translations to the master system and Genesis keep on that spirit, while still maintaining a relentless difficulty. (but in a fair way)
      On the other hand I remember some arcade games who actually had infinite continues who drop you out on the most recent checkpoint.
      Some examples like the Battle Toads Arcade game were disgusting coin guzzlers and definitely just were made artificially hard for the sake of your wallet.
      But there were a lot of better balanced games like the Metal Slug series or simply some good multiplayer games. Sure the high difficulty was kinda necessary, but actually an too easy game would be bad for the replay value regardless if you have to pay money for it or not, since the games are short and extremely linear, the difficulty was part of the fun.
      This sort of mentality was still transports to the era of home console gaming for quite a while until game were becoming more and more about story and visuals broadening the playerbase to those who also just play videogames for the vibe.

    This game is hard but compared to a large number Japanese Super Mario Bros rom hacks it at least doesn’t make you master glitches like wall clipping, jumping out of bottomless pits, secret exits.

    I don't know though. The original really goes well with the flat look. It looks like toys in a toy world. The more realistic ground texture really clashes with the basic Mario.

    • @PixelPowerstar
      @PixelPowerstar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never really got the impression that a toy look was the intended style though. I feel like the SNES look reflects how it was supposed to look if anything, if you compare it to the Japanese boxart of SMB1. Natural yet cartoony and colorful with a hint of fantasy, which is what the rest of the series went with. The FDS version of LL kind of just has more detail. Sure, the Mario sprite still looks rudimentary so I can see how it’s a bit jarring, but it was a step in the right direction in my opinion. Although the SNES style is ultimately my preferred art style either way.

    @Pixel Powerstar: You are actually wrong about 8-3 about the star power-up being a troll, you can actually make it accross without the koopa bounce with the star power-up I do it all the time, and also the vine in 8-3 is not a troll, it is a coins heaven when your done with it, it drop you head near by where the star power up is, and also just left of the vine their is a power-up that is not a poison mushroom, if you let the vine fully load, and then hit the power-up block the vine will disapear, but you can still climb the vine and reach the coins bonus even when the vine disapear, this also happen in the Super nintendo version..

    It actually wasn't really made as a sequel. Nintendo made an Arcade version of SMB and they made it harder to gopple of more quarters. With the runaway success Nintendo ordered a sequel to be made for the new Famicon disk system within just 4 months so to meet that deadline they just took the arcade game, expanded it a bit and that was SMB2.
    Nintendo at the time had no way of knowing what SMB would grow into. For all they knew it was just a fad that would evaporate soon.

    • @SuperNickid
      @SuperNickid 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Mr.Marinus18: That is the short story of actually happen but your still missing a few detail. After the release of Super mario bros. 1 They quickly made its arcade version Vs. Super mario bros. And since their was more space it solve the issue of the first one, repeating level. So Vs. Super Mario bros. was release the same year to the public only for place with Arcade. Then they made the sequel to the arcade Vs.Super Mario bros.2 it was done but never release to the public as an arcade. They where planing to make a sequal for the console version that would be diffrent from the original, that was their plan to be first in Japan, the one where Mario toss vegtable, but at that time they could only make each level vertical scrolling only, or horizontall scrolling, and since he wanted to be new it would be vertical scrolling but the creator says it will be too boring in one level to only toss vegtable in vertical scrolling level, so it got delay untill they have the technologie for it. But the solution came in really quick with the Family computer disk system, but the reason they could not applied the solution was because the creator already send his Super mario bros.2 plan for Yumi kojo doki doki panic. And Japan still needed a Super mario bros.2 so they took Vs.SuperMario bros.2 and change it to Super mario bros.2 for super player(lost levels) and they change it to be more fair compare to the arcade version and put the new levels of Vs.Super mario bros. into Super mario bros. the lost levels instead of creating newer harder level for it. Since it was the official Super mario bros.2 now they send it to the US to get tested, but maybe in the US it got incorrectly tested, since it was Super mario bros. the lost levels he probebly assume their was no high bounce on enemies like the original, and that is how it got made as too difficult for US and Canada. So You know what happen next.

    I liked this game because of the challenge. I was able to beat it with Luigi. Compared to the old Mario games: it's not the best nor the worst. I have it 4th above SMB1. To be specific, SMW, SMB3, SMB2, SMBLL and SMB1. In making video games, that's consistency and it also tells you why Mario was so successful! Out of the gate: SMB1 was a runaway, breakthrough hit compared to anything most had ever seen before and--from there--each one got better....

    This wasn’t not released because of it’s difficultly. It was solely because of how similar it was to the first. Plenty of more difficult games were released here and some were made more difficult than the Japanese original.

    • @Tailstraw_xD
      @Tailstraw_xD 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don't think you understand just how much more difficult Lost Levels actually is. I'd go as far as calling it the world's first Kaizo romhack. They SERIOUSLY toned down the difficulty in the Mario All Stars version and even that is still a giant monster of a challenge.

  • @SuperJM9
    @SuperJM9 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    In my opinion the stock versions of the All Stars ports of SMB1 and SMB2j are inferior to the originals because of a block glitch, where if you break a block as Super or Fire Mario you're pulled up into the block instead of bouncing off it. This kills the momentum and leads to situations like falling as shown at 0:20. This can lead to deaths, such as in the end of 4-2 in SMB1, where if you jump off the pipe you'll break a block and fall into the pit instead of landing on the other side. Fortunately there is a romhack that fixes this behaviour and vastly improves both ports.

    @Pixel Powerstar: In Family computer disk system version of Super mario bros. the lost level, World A throught D does exist you already know that. Only need to beat 8-4 a totall of 8 time, and Warp zone can be used for this, and you hold the jump button on the title screen to start on World A-1, and they are easier on the family computer disk system version, since the koopa keep normal speed, hammer bros. stay stationary, and Bowser fight are fire with no hammer even the bowser in D-4, and on the family computer both Bowser and his Twin brother are fake Bowser in D-4 and also lv check points return except for world D and castle. You are disqualified from world 9 if you enter a Warp zone, this is only truth for Super Nintendo All-stars version not the family computer version, since the family computer version cannot check if you enter a warp zone, it check if lv4 are clear, and using a back word warp zone does not unclear lv4 that are already clear, and the same his truth if you warp zone back to the world you got warp zone backward this will also not unclear the castle you have already done. In the world A throught D they are warp zone but they are not reverse warp zone, and no bonus stage after world D, but the warp zone are even more split-up. Warp zone to world B just the classic stay on the roof pass the ending pipe of A-2, Warp zone to World C found a way to go over the flag at A-3, and Warp zone to world D his in B-4 when your done the fake maze the last pipe. And pipe maze and looping screen cannot exist starting with world 9, and Since A mean world 10, and so on.

    Totally disagree
    Smb2j looks terrible,20 odd years ago I still thought ?? Why does this look garbage
    The original is far better looking,smb2j should have had much more verity
    Also clouds with half arsed faces ... it would be easy to mistake smb2j for a China rom off a multi cart
    The pal version of smb looks the best,purple sky is weird
    Smb2j were never intended as a sequel,the team had a lot of fun making new levels,development was very quick and it just worked out to put it on the disk system
    Super Mario Bros 2 EUROPE version .... was awesome,everyone loved it and without it,super mario bros 3 wouldn't be the same game ... it was literally designed an an engine that could scroll left and right and up and down like metroid but for a mario game
    Finally .. smb2j is awesome,the chance to play difficult challenge levels,back then these extra levels to play were very welcome,the original game was amazing,people played it to DEATH over and over,speedrunning it .. it was that good,so getting to play more of the same with a bit of a swist was an instant win

    • @SuperNickid
      @SuperNickid 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @PatrickhawthomeLS: The Super mario bros.2 Europe vesion is the same as Super mario bros.2 American version the one that they make mario character out of the Yumi kojo doki doki panic game. As a kid because my child wood friend important game from Japan for the NES I was able to play Super mario bros. the lost levels (nes version) and the smiling cloud was represented as creepy to me when I was a kid, however I did like getting scared or creep out as a kid. The reason why that childhood friend is not friend anymore he eventually prefer to be friend with my bullies.
