This brings back so many memories! Watching Riva Ridge the year before Secretariat ignited my passion for horse racing. That triple crown for Secretariat certainly was a marvel. The Kentucky Derby, as I recall it, was a very close race; the Preakness not so much; but then the Belmont .... just WOW. I can still hear the race announcer saying "he is running like a tremendous machine!"
I always cry when I watch a documentary on the great Secretariet and have remind myself that he he no longer with us! It's like he was all our family's pet!
His eyes were so intelligent and he could almost talk through them. Sham was a magnificent horse but Big Red made the poor thing look so ordinary. God gave us Perfection in a horse.
Red wasn’t of this Earth, and frankly neither was Sham. Both had superior power and speed compared to any horses that year. Even the likes of Forego had trouble with those two, then again Forego didn’t blossom until the fall. Anyway, Sham is my favorite because he literally gave his all and it still wasn’t enough.
While Big Red was certainly super cool and utterly GORGEOUS, the king of American racehorses is the legendary Seattle Slew IMO. Thank you for the beautiful video :)
I was 22 and watching the Belmont on TV that day. Everything that could possibly be said about that wonder horse has already been said. All I'll say is that every year at Derby time I play all 3 races on TH-cam listening to Chic's call. And just remember being 22 and watching the greatest horse I've ever seen or ever will see.
Yeah Me also My mom boarded horses in Silicon Valley no less we had five and a half acres and that's what introduced me to horses Then I work for a contractor who had a racehorse at Golden Gate Fields Because my mom boarded horses I knew how to clean the stall I made a lot of money that summer Did not work for the contractor too much oh well
Puede surgir otro super horse, pero, el carisma de este tipo Secretariat, era maravilloso... poder y carisma, elegancia, inteligencia... Secretariat, el Rey...
Awesome!! One of my favorite shots of Secretariat though is actually when he was in the home stretch of his last race, Woodbine in Canada, it was cold and steam was literally bursting from his nostrils like a steam locomotive!
I love that race too! When Secretariat takes the lead from Kennedy Road the announcer says… there he goes there he goes and the crowd irrupt‘s then coming out of that last turn with the vapor coming from his nostrils every stride then the announcer says… ladies and gentlemen he’s all yours! And it’s just pandemonium in the crowd, oh that’s so cool, what a great call!
At 69, I never had the pleasure of seeing this beautiful horse in person, but I was lucky enough to see him in these races. There will never be another like him....
I’m already crying.... I’m in public & crying! I can’t help it. Watching him brings me to my knees every time. Plus your music was great, really put the cherry on top of my crying spectacle. By the end of the video I was both crying & smiling .., Pretty sure people are about to call the psych ward on me.... Lol! So, thank you & the greatest race horse that's ever lived.. Love you Red!
I must admit, I have never seen a horse turn it on early like Secretariat and keep accelerating. It is an amazing feat that I doubt I will ever see again. The most amazing horse ever.
If you’re talking about the Belmont - no he didn’t. His last quarter mile was the slowest and he ran slower quarter miles from the 3/4 pole to the end of the race. He did gallop out to what would probably have been a record at 1 5/8 because Turcotte didn’t pull him up but he wasn’t accelerating. In the Kentucky Derby he ran each quarter mile faster than the previous.
Was he or was Man O War or SeaBiscuit or any of the other great horses people have loved and lost. Sometimes I wonder if the difference between Sham and Secretariat was more a question of management and ownership than any kind of ability. Secretariat's heart was twice the size of the average horse, completely natural, and so was Sham's so maybe the difference was not in the horses but in the trainer, owner etc. Two great horses loved to this day by many, many people
@@nikolajcek Secretariat lost some races so while he was remarkable he was not unbeatable, those were different days but the owner/trainer/groom/jockey and emotion are important in persuading a horse. Zenyatta another great horse, a filly, is bigger than Secretariat she won 19 of the 20 races she ran. I suspect her last race which she lost was due more to jockey error and the mixed emotions of the day than to her inability to beat the winner. Man O War was loved by his groom He died one month after his groom. You're leaving emotions out and anyone who knows anything about animals knows emotion is a key factor in all of them
Sham was no normal racing horse. He would have set records in the Derby and Preakness as well, and still holds the second fastest Derby of all time. Unfortunately for him, Secretariat and Pincay pretty much ran the poor thing into the ground at the Belmont, and he got injured the next month in training, so he was retired. Sham was actually just as tall as Secretariat.
@@eryan37 Whilst you are quite right that SECRETARIAT did get beaten on occasion. No one can argue the fact that he set records in all three of the American Triple Crown races, which remain unequalled let alone beaten to this day. and who can ever deny that astounding 31 length lead at the finish of The Belmont Stakes in 1973..?
Thanks for posting!!! Secretariat was the mythical creature God put on this earth for all of us to witness with our own eyes...we'll never see this supernatural greatness or miracle again...Thank you for sharing:-)
I understand. I feel that way. If it makes you feel better think of his soul as being in heaven. When I read the part in "Eddie Sweat Part two where Eddie say "I don't care if their Claimers, I rub them all for any sign of heat". And the part where Eddie describes Big Red hoofs as being perfect and that all of him was PERFECTION, I cry a river😭 because I asked myself how did Big Red go from having perfect hoof and was "PERFECTION" to having laminitis that the Vet who performed the autopsy said was the worst case he ever seen. I 😢. And to read the Vet explanation for the laminitis that he said was more than likely caused by an anomaly in the grassed caused by Frost I cry😭. I cry because it brought back memories of my father who was Virginian and part Cherokee.I thought about our summer vacations there and sometime visits in the fall. I thought about the early mornings He would rise with his father and brother to go out to horse the paddock to inspect the grass They would line up side by side and walk from one end and back inspecting the grass for weeds or snakes before turning the horses out. This was repeated every morning. This process was repeated in the fall and after an frost. After an frost the horses were not turn out in the grass paddock for seven days due to the fact that frost can change the chemistry of the grass and weeds that are dangerous to human and animals can grow. Instead the horses were turned out in the dirt Paddock with hay and water. After seven day the grass paddock was inspected for weeds. At which times any weeds found was extracted from the roots and bagged. I'm happy to say they never lost a horse other than to old age. One of the main problems with large Breeding Farms is they don't have the staff nor time to provide a lot of attention to their horses due to the fact there are too many horses. The Meadows was a smaller breeding Farm. Big Red, Riva was fortunate to have a highly skilled Horse Whisperer that was dedicated to them and their health. Big Red loved to ran and play in his paddock. From what the Vet that performed his autopsy said., it's obvious he was out doors on grass after a frost and that pains me to this day. One would think large Breeding Farms would be aware of the danger. Eddie's family said he was devastated by the death of his Old Friend and that it took its toll. Eddie said he could have saved Big Red had he been there. And that is s why Fans was hoping Eddie would accept the offer from Seth Hancock. As my father once said to me "Big Red would be here today had Eddie accepted the offer because he was highly skilled and had already saved Big Red life more than once by providing 24/7 medical care.
He is the king of horses, the Mount of His Majesty in Heaven. No horse will ever be like him, and you will see him again one day, with the Son of God riding him.
Thank you for this great presentation about Secretariat ! He was truly the best. Maybe one day God will send us another Secretariat if we are very good and take good care of all our racehorses when they retire.
elizabeth taylor Yes that's why it's so important to support & help organizations like Canter & The Thoroughbred after Care Alliance. These organizations help care for retired race horses. Especially those that give their lives to racing but aren't very successful & sadly end up discarded or at slaughter houses.
Posting appreciated. Every now and then, I read remarks denigrating Secretariat fans as "losers worshiping a dead horse." How sad that they cannot see that what LIVES is the SPIRIT OF EXCELLENCE which this Superhorse, Super Athlete demonstrated and the JOY he brought to so many. Best Wishes to all.
I have been on several Secretariat sites. There are many haters out there defacing this magnificent race horse! I don't think that Secretariat fans intentionally mean to down grade other horses. Secretariat is my favorite horse and I think that Sham was a great contender! There are great horses and then there is Secretariat!!
The Greatest horse to race on a track , just amazing his races , The 1973 Belmont stakes to run 1.09 in the first 3/4 of a mile and than to run another 3/4 of a mile in a blazing 2.24 for the 1 1/2 is next to unworldly !! Miss you Secretariat !
In 1973 the year of his triple crown run, Secretariat captivated the nation by his performances on the track. It was also the year of Watergate, the pentagon papers, and Big Red was the only pure HONEST entity we had as a nation, rite at that moment. He ran because he loved to run. And on race day and he knew when the cameras were rolling it seems. I will say rite now that no horse could stay with Big Red. If you look at his Derby performance, he ran each furlong faster than the previous, and his record Derby track time still stands, and if any other horse can match that, then I would put him in a class with Secretariat. But that's never been done, and so in my book he is absolutely the greatest horse that ever ran a track. When he passed in 1989 they did an autopsy and found his heart was 2 1/2 times normal size. So he was able to crack up the oxygen content in his blood quicker than the others and it was that amazing heart of his, that made him a Triple Crown Winner.
@@davesutherland1864 One of the things I find most amazing is that Ron Turcotte, Secretariat’s jockey, only used his whip one time during over the course of all three races. It was when they were coming down the backstretch of the Kentucky Derby and he just whipped him once to change leads...it wasn’t to make him go faster. Secretariat basically just ran those races all on his own. I really feel bad for Sham. He was a great horse, but was just unlucky to be born the same year as Secretariat. His jockey whipped him relentlessly in all three races. He also broke a bone in his front right leg halfway through the Belmont. His trainer told him to go right at Secretariat and stay with him the whole race. It’s possible that Sham just just didn’t have it in him to stay at Secretariat’s pace for that long.
Belmont he was on the inside rail he did not have to run around all those horses and cover more ground and a 28 Lanks he was still charging and when he crossed the finish line he was still charging will never know the potential of this horse he was magnificent
In the heirachy of Royalty, there are Princes and Princesses, there are Kings and Queens, but the pinnacle of Royalty is the title of Emperor. Surely the legendary and Immortal SECRETARIAT, whose records have never been equalled let alone beaten, so far..deserves to be considered as the "Emperor of The Equine World "...?
Very same year I came out of high school, will never forget the best horse ever. 34 lengths , sounds easy but impossible to break. He still alive in our hearts.
I wonder just who is the greatest of all time, overall it’s just between 4 wonderful race horses never to be forgotten, and I’m talking about flat racing: Man’o’war, Secretariat, Frankel, Dancing brave, the times, the speed, the sheer power would have to go to the fantastic unbeatable FRANKEL, as a travelled race goer for a number of years, I thought I’d seen it all with the brilliant SECRETARIAT, but then along came the MAGNIFICENT GIANT FRANKEL, I witnessed something at the headquarters of flat racing Newmarket I will NEVER EVER FORGET, Frankel in the 2000, Guineas against a very strong field of group 1 winners was 15,lengths clear of the field at half way and cantered home, I thought this can’t be happening it did, he repeated the feat at Royal Ascot in the Queen Ann, by 11 lengths, and remained unbeaten in 14 races of pure class,
Thanks for answering the question before I got a chance to ask!! Thanks so much for posting this, I'm going to subscribe. Ali lied when he said he was the greatest, he wasn't-Secretariat was. The first time I watched this, it was without the audio, then someone sent me a message that the audio was back. The audio makes the video great.
Secretariat wasn't just the King of Horses. He was superior to every horse & man that has ever lived. His perfection has never been matched. He was superior to all of us..physically, genetically, confidence, power, temperment and intelligence that was superior to his species. Secretariat is the ONLY miracle of nature. Man has never, and will never match this perfect being that God gave us. Man is so vain. The supernatural being was a horse..so perfect..he's irreplaceable. Sadly..never again.
As a lover of horses, from a young age, I knew about Nasrulla, of the Nearco tribe. I knew about the coin toss. About the three foals. I saw all of Secretariat's races, on television, and agreed with Clem Florio, when he said, "That's my Derby horse for next year!" when he won his second race under Paul Felicia no by six. I believe that he broke the record at Pimlico, also. There are so many greats. Remember Man O' War had a 28 ft. stride, 3 feet more than Secretariat. All had their strengths and deserve mention. The year of Secretariat's Triple Crown win, was my high school graduation. I told everyone he would win, not only the Derby, but The Triple Crown. It was a knowing I couldn't explain, exactly, but it was strong. My father asked me who I thought would win the Derby and when I said Secretariat; he said, "But, he lost the Wood", I told him something was wrong, which came out later. I surely did not change my mind. Watching, I could tell he didn't grab the bit and I knew there was a reason, just not what it was. He does hold a special place in my heart and memories.
Yeah the crazy thing about Secretariat was that he could run without other horses pushing him in the Belmont he just kept running faster and faster and nobody was pushing him there were no other horses even close to him God was pushing him
For years people have been trying to make another horse like Secretariat. They may be able to create a horse with a BIG Chest, Big Quarters, BIG Neck BIG Thigs but they will never reproduce the BIG heart.
Red had it all and then some. His winning times are still unbroken. I can't help but wish Mr. Chenery had lived a bit longer and could have still comprehended that at the end of his career he and his wife had finally been Blesses with not only an exceptional contender, Riva Ridge, but one of the Greatest Racehorses the World has Ever Seen.
Yes, he was a savvy breeder who showed the hardboots. It was harder to be a breeder in VA because their lack of racing meant no breeder purse supplements for in state breds.
If you look all the triple crown winners are chestnut,Bay,brown, and dark brown with the majority being chestnut The Chestnuts are: Sir Barton,Omaha,Whirlaway,Assault,Secretariat,Affirmed, and Justify The Bays are: Gallant Fox,Citation, and American Pharaoh The Browns are:Count Fleet,Seattle Slew(he was also described as Dark Bay) and War Admiral who was described as dark brown
I was at the Preakness in 73 . He was like a locomotive coming down the stretch. 😮

Belmont he was on the inside rail he did not have to run around all those horses and cover more ground and a 28 Lanks he was still charging and when he crossed the finish line he was still charging will never know the potential of this horse he was magnificent
In his Belmont there were only 4 other contenders. On a big track like that there's lots of room.
Great video!! Brilliant choice of music.
He will likely never be unseated. What a fantastic horse! Thaks for the vid. Loved it!
His heart was twice as large as a normal thoroughbred. They found this out during his autopsy. Without wings, he flew
Sham also had the large heart gene. His wasnt quite as large as Secretariats. In any other year he would have won the TC.
Love the spirit stallion of the cimarron music in the background. 😭
The music beginning at 3:05 showing video of Secretariat gliding around the clubhouse turn in the Preakness would be priceless!
Gliding he looked like a five speed Ferrari racing Grandmas three speed Chevy.
Very same year I came out of high school, will never forget the best horse ever. 34 lengths , sounds easy but impossible to break. He still alive in our hearts.
That Time cover seems to capture his intellect in his eyes.
I wonder just who is the greatest of all time, overall it’s just between 4 wonderful race horses never to be forgotten, and I’m talking about flat racing: Man’o’war, Secretariat, Frankel, Dancing brave, the times, the speed, the sheer power would have to go to the fantastic unbeatable FRANKEL, as a travelled race goer for a number of years, I thought I’d seen it all with the brilliant SECRETARIAT, but then along came the MAGNIFICENT GIANT FRANKEL, I witnessed something at the headquarters of flat racing Newmarket I will NEVER EVER FORGET, Frankel in the 2000, Guineas against a very strong field of group 1 winners was 15,lengths clear of the field at half way and cantered home, I thought this can’t be happening it did, he repeated the feat at Royal Ascot in the Queen Ann, by 11 lengths, and remained unbeaten in 14 races of pure class,
This is by far, The most AMAZING horse video I have ever seen that involved Secretariat. The Music just fits this amazing horse.
The greatest athlete in the history of history. All under a hand ride.
And he was the handsomest too by 31 lengths.
Certainly by the 2nd turn, Secretariat was racing the clock and it was a battle among the rest for second place.
I lived during the time of Secretariat.
I was 12
cool!!
I wish I did. I’m only 13 now😭😭
That is awesome!
Great tribute, thanks so much! :)
BRAVO, BRAVO!!
"THE" Greatest Race horse
Yes, he was a savvy breeder who showed the hardboots. It was harder to be a breeder in VA because their lack of racing meant no breeder purse supplements for in state breds.
if they wanted to see perfection, it happened at the Belmont
Very nice video, thank you!
En lo que a mí concierne, bien dicho: el rey de los caballos!!! Secretaríat
Great audio! I wished they'd use this for the movie they're making.
I think that photo at 3:55 is the best picture of Secretariat I've ever seen.
There was another wonder horse, Phar lap 18 hands high, also had a heart over twice the size of a normal horse. Was winning everything.
Greatest ever
He looks so much stronger than all the other Triple Crown winners. He looks so solid where the others look very frail.
If you look all the triple crown winners are chestnut,Bay,brown, and dark brown with the majority being chestnut
The Chestnuts are: Sir Barton,Omaha,Whirlaway,Assault,Secretariat,Affirmed, and Justify
The Bays are: Gallant Fox,Citation, and American Pharaoh
The Browns are:Count Fleet,Seattle Slew(he was also described as Dark Bay) and War Admiral who was described as dark brown
Incredible 😮
