The father gives the heart to the mother, the mother gives it to her first son. "Secretariat" - Big Red. Still the best horse ever. 40 years later i still watch this amazing big red horse.
As outstanding as Secretariat's performance in the Belmont Stakes his last to first burst at the Preakness has to be considered one of his greatest accomplishments.
At 5:20 it shows a still of Secretariat making his power lunge into high stride. It was amazing to see live, a monster lunge from an already fast pace. None of these videos have that because he's just behind the field when he does it. You'll never ever see a last to first on the first turn again, especially on the far outside. It just isn't done. That was like a Vette going around Beetles.
He was definitely ticked at Deadly Dream. Thwarted his plan to follow Sham up the rail at the start so he decided to pass them all lol. Sham was the only one that challenged him coming by.
Sham was a great horse who had the bad luck to be up against a legend. I've watched the 1973 Triple Crown races several times and Big Red still takes my breath away. In the Derby, the way he took it away from Sham in the home stretch. In the Preakness, the way he drove past the field on the first turn. In the Belmont .... well, there's nothing like it. Chic Anderson's call of the race was almost as legendary as that of the horse that ran it. "BUT SECRETARIAT IS ALL ALONE! He's out there almost a 16th of a mile away from the rest of the horses!"
I wish someone would do a video restoration on these races. One of the greatest athletic performances in history deserves to be shown without the poor, fuzzy, distorted color of the video available today.
They do have it. I' have seen them. Beautiful color. You just have to be lucky enough too find them. I' found mines on Goggle some yrs ago. Check it out. 💯👈🏾🙏🏽✌🏾✊🏾
I remember watching the Belmont with my dad,,we were both jumping up and down yelling,,go big red go and boy did he,,,when it was over we were both crying,,,only time l saw my old man cry,,,what a great gift he was for the whole world
I was 10 when my grandfather got me into it and he said Secretariat is the greatest horse he had ever seen I watched all 3 races and he was correct. The Belmont proved without a doubt. He went start to finish and got faster at every stride. The best part RT never whipped him
Some horses just like to run and a smart rider knows how to guide such an animal without abuse. What a truly amazingly fast horse 🐎 and rider. That Belmont run is an all time classic performance!
When one thinks of sport's figures deemed as "The G.O.A.T." in their craft there are always debates...football -Jim Brown or Tom Brady; baseball - Babe Ruth or Willie Mays; basketball, Michael Jordan or LeBron James; hockey - Lemuel or Gretzky; car racing - Dale Earhart or Richard Petty; boxing - Ali or Marciano...but when it comes to horse racing there is no name other than Secretariat! In my humble opinion Secretariat is the G.O.A.T. of all G.O.A.T.S. With each furlong, he gained strength and speed. I calculated his speed at the Belmont Stakes...nearly 38 mph! In all three races he averaged just under this time...and the Belmont Stakes??? Some records are made to be broken...well...not all. No one, I mean no one will ever do what Secretariat did, the way he did it...to win by 31 lengths! As Chic Anderson said...I say concerning the permanent record he set...Secretariat's record is in "a position that seems to be impossible to catch!" Now, watch him and see him "moving, like a tremendous machine!"
Frank Buono Sham was better than good. Any other year, he would have won the TC. I agree, he could have kept going. Even after the finish line, he runs pretty vigorously for a while.
Marcus Brown I don’t understand the people who rank him behind Man O’War. He ran the same tracks faster than Man, so what am I missing? I know Man had fewer losses, but horse racing was VERY different back then- the scheduling, the competition, etc. Chick Anderson did almost as much for the joy of watching these races as Secretariat did. “He’s looking for the lead and it’s RIGHT NOW he’s looking for it!” When American Pharaoh ran, the announcer was so flat. ☹️
Secretariat, no feat covering all the major sports leagues come close to what he achieve all time!!!! Secretariat in a class of his own....R I P Big Red
I mean, Man o War was ranked higher than Secretariat by bloodhorse, so to call him undisputed is not correct. Plus, people in Europe call other horses the greatest. People in Australia often call Phar lap the greatest. I have heard people call Citation the greatest. I have heard people call Native Dancer the greatest when you count his racing and stud career. I have heard someone say Kelso was the greatest. I mean the greatest is an opinion because there is no way to know which horses were really the greatest as they never raced against each other. People that don't know much about racing will automatically point to the Secretariat since he has a movie and the media loved him. But I mean other horses did great things that Secretariat never did. Which is probably why Man o War was ranked higher as he also did amazing things. Again though, the greatest is an opinion, and that goes for any sport not just racing.
HE BEAT BUMS HERE! THAT'S REALLY WHY. WHEN SEC RETURNED TO BELMONT, SEC, WAS BADLY BEATEN BY PROVE OUT, A ALLOWANCE CHEAPER HORSE! IN THE MAJOR RACE = WOODWARD STAKES.😂😂😂SEC WAS FAR FROM THE BEST
@@captainamericaamerica8090 Dude / yeah Sec lost races but if he ran against any of the horses in the last 50 years he would have won easily in any of the TC races. BTW Sham would have beaten any of these horses too except for Secretariat (Sham was Secretariat’s main competition) Any other year from 1974 to now Sham would have won the TC.
Omg. Look at Big Red Go. Will always be remembered for ever and ever. Beautiful horse. Once you hear hear his name. You know THE WINNING HORSE the legend ❤❤
Most horses reach their racing peak at 4. Just think what we all missed by not having the opportunity to see Secretariat race as a 4 year old . I'll bet many more distance and race records would have been set by this amazing horse. Truly one in a more than a million as his triple crown records are approaching 50 years of domination.
When this horse was right, no other could touch him. He had the superior motor. And when he wanted to run nothing could catch him. I love the Superman movie music. How fitting for the greatest horse to ever run on these racetracks. Still love you Secretariat after all these years, always will.
Wow 😲 big red says: not today, I'll show you something. I tear up watching this graceful champion that seems to know what's going on as he makes history. RIP you beautiful horse with a 22lb ❤️
In the top 50 athletes of all time. While in college I had a poster of Big Red on my wall because I had never felt that way about a horse. I truly loved that horse! (and still do)
pls dnt compare secretariat to any horse..he is really the greatest horse..i've never seen any horse in the past and present that runs so fast like secretariat without wipping the steak on his side
I've never been much of a horse racing fan, but it's impossible not to be wowed by the greatest horse racing performances of the century. Imagine what the track record times would have been in the Derby and Preakness if Secretariat hadn't started last.
So true Russell. I can only imagine what the other jockeys felt when Big Red was running by like the wind. Truly an angel with wings. May he RIP knowing he was the GOAT.
Eddie Maple, Riva Ridge's jockey, on getting passed by Secretariat: "I saw those blue-and-white blinkers going by, and what can you do? Nothing you can do."
Im so lucky to have seen secratariot on tv ... Thanks to my mother as an 8 year old kid and now watching the old race footage it inspires me to give 100% at my job duties ...... Thank you secratariot
I will always remember these races. I was 8 years old. And my dream of working with these great horses was born. We moved to a small 5 acre farm. I got my first horse in summer of 1974. This little mare was perfect for a first horse, I learned so much from her. She died a few years later. Due to old age. Got my next horse in 1977, in June if 1978, she gave me a cute little colt. His name was Smokey. We grew up together, I trained him to be a race horse, he was Appaloosa Arabian and he was blindingly fast. He got sick in 1988 and he died then. Even though that was so long ago, I still miss him. Sorry for rambling the great Secretariat and his beauty, strength, speed, and heart gave me a dream, and he put me on my path of being with horses was set. I am hoping someday to find another horse again. Once you find a purpose in life it binds the path for life. Any one who loves horses knows what I am saying. You will have hoof prints on your heart, and never forget your own horses. And if you love racing as I do, you will remember the first horse you ever saw forever. Secretariat was that horse for me. He is/was the greatest male horse. His records for the Triple Crown will never be equaled or beaten.
My grandfather was addicted to horse racing, his entire life. I would go to the track with him as a little kid, he taught me a lot about horse racing and told me a LOT of old stories. He seen Man o War and secretariat, i seen my grandfather won thousands and thousands of dollars on horse racing, don’t remember him losing very often, he told me he would bet on man o war... he was the kind of horse racing better that sat in the clubhouse all day, only getting up to bet, pee, and eat, always with his nose in those books and papers, never even watched the races, just listened. I miss those days, and my grandfather, horse racing makes me think of him everytime
Push any horse to the point of breaking apart and it will still never eclipse Secretariat's Belmont record. Just forget it. His heart was twice the size of normal and it oxygenated his tissues like Superman's under the yellow sun. But he was also super intelligent, precision proportioned by the gods and was blessed with the perfect owner, trainer, rider and fan base. All combined, the only result possible is a juggernaut.
I snuck up to the fence beside the paddock at Woodbine for the Rothmans international with my friend before post time and got right next to Secretariat made it up to the grandstand for the start and saw him win by about 20 lengths. I will never forget it!
That comment... hold my beer🤣 . But, in all seriousness, I'm sitting here watching this video again for the two hundred time.... and I' still share a tear. People... I' was there with my parents. Nine yrs young. I' Remember like it was yesterday, screaming at the top of my heart and lungs... runnnnn . My father was a gambler and played horses all the time. I' been to aqueduct ...but too small for me at that time. Roosevelt raceway. Hate it. Sarasota.... once. Hate it. But, Belmont Park was my favorite and too see my favorite horse run there and win is something that I' will alway's remember and appreciate. I' didn't know the full extent of the Triple crown race meaning. All I' care about was SECRETARIAT winning. I' want too pay tribute to "Ruffin". She ran against Foolish pleasure. It was a match race right there at Belmont Park. I' was there with my pop. It ended sad. She was a gorgeous philly. One of the best. I' do believe that they buried her in the infield of Belmont Park. Nevertheless I' have had my share of memories good and bad. BUT THAT DAY JUNE 9, 1973. WILL FOREVER BE THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME. SECRETARIAT IS BLAZING ALONG. .. HE'S FRIGHTENING NOW..... HE'S MOVING LIKE A TREMENDOUS MACHINE..... SECRETARIAT BY 12, SECRETARIAT BY 14 LINKS SHAM IS DROPPING BACK......💪🏾💯👈🏾👶🏿✌🏾✊🏾
Thank you so much for sharing this amazing memory with me. I am 62 now, but in 1973 I was just 15 and suffered three years (1972-75) of endless physical, verbal and other abuse at the hands of four thug bullies at nightmarish San Lorenzo Valley High School in Felton, California. That being said, one of the few highlights in my life was my sweet Grandma and our mutual love for horse racing. We went to the County fairs and Cal Expo (our California State Fair), along with old Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields. That spring in 1973, we watch this amazing run of the most incredible horse I have ever had the privilege to witness. Rest in Peace Secretariat and hang tough Ron Turcotte (paralyzed sadly in a horse racing accident in 1978, but happily still with us!)
I never tire of watching those races! What a magnificent horse was Secretariat...it will be miraculous if a horse comes along to break his records. That will be a sight to behold if it ever happens.
In this world of us with our human imperfections God sent us one of his perfect creations- Secretariat. For those of us fortunate enough to see him race it has left us with no doubt he was touched by God's hand.
I was 15 in 73 and definitely not a horse racing fan but I was in front of the TV for all 3 races of BIG RED wish I kept the sports page from each race " he's moving like a tremendous machine " one of the greatest calls ever
It breaks my heart that what killed him was laminitis - something that is horribly painful and could not be treated in his time. Now, they can and do treat it - though i don't know what the success rate is or if they cure it. But today, he would have had a good chance of surviving that. His owners did the most beautiful thing when they had him put down - as they could not see him tortured. They killed the golden goose - to spare him. That is love. So i see these videos, think of him, cry, and pray for the good Lord to send him back for a reprise, with Owners as good as the ones he had the first time.
Big Red holds the record for the Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont. He ran those races faster than anyone before and no one has beaten his records since. The greatest horse ever.

@@cynthcorcor126 what about Sham?
@@marklaymon6698 sham would have won the three races ,BUT , of course he just happened to be born in the wrong time period ......
In the second race (Pimlico) I never seen an animal that much faster each stride than the rest of the field,,& again, around the outside!
I’ve seen the Preakness remastered but I haven’t seen the other two races done yet, they gotta be out there somewhere you would think
@@johnwalsh3215 Search "Secretariat belmont haight" for a beautiful video of Ray Haight's radio call of the race. Best video I've seen of it.
Exactly. There are some other short clips from another camera that shows him running close up in those races. It’s really something to see.
And with that stupid star wars music in the background - wtf?
I cry every time I watch it.....greatest horse ever....
As Chic Anderson said...I say concerning the permanent record he set...Secretariat's record is in "a position that seems to be impossible to catch!" Now, watch him and see him "moving, like a tremendous machine!"
sports not sport's It's not possessive
Every furlong was faster than the previous one. He was accelerating the entire race. I should say that was in the Belmont. It is truly remarkable.
That is correct. Only time in history that that happened.
THAT is CORRECT!!! Remarkable!!
That was at the derby. Nevertheless, a remarkable performance.
That was not the Belmont. He ran the 3/4 in 1:09 and change. Twice that would have been quicker than 2:24.
Incorrect.
God opened heaven and this horse came down for a brief time in history! There will never be another like him.
Everytime I watch this beautiful horse run, I tear up. What a beautiful thing.
FUN FACT: Secretariat was _accelerating_ through most of the Belmont Stakes and that's why no other horse could touch him.
HE BEAT BUMS HERE! THAT'S REALLY WHY. WHEN SEC RETURNED TO BELMONT, SEC, WAS BADLY BEATEN BY PROVE OUT, A ALLOWANCE CHEAPER HORSE! IN THE MAJOR RACE = WOODWARD STAKES.😂😂😂SEC WAS FAR FROM THE BEST
Really captain then why does secretariat still hold all the records in all 3 races your not to smart are ya
Incorrect. The second half of the race was 5 and 1/5th seconds slower than the first.
@@bbmtge
I said "accelerating through _most_ of the race". When did I say that one half was faster than the other?
@@captainamericaamerica8090 Dude / yeah Sec lost races but if he ran against any of the horses in the last 50 years he would have won easily in any of the TC races. BTW Sham would have beaten any of these horses too except for Secretariat (Sham was Secretariat’s main competition) Any other year from 1974 to now Sham would have won the TC.
Omg. Look at Big Red Go. Will always be remembered for ever and ever. Beautiful horse. Once you hear hear his name. You know THE WINNING HORSE the legend ❤❤
What a magnificent horse he was....doubt we will ever see one like him again.
Thanks for this! Still gives me chills in 2019.
watched this race many times and still get the goose bumps listening. "Moving like a great machine: 1/16 of a mile out in front". amazing horse.
Watching Secretariat simultaneously makes my heart pound and my eyes tear up.
ANYTIME I WANT TO SEE AN ATHLETE WIN WITH GRACE...I GO Back to these races......
Still love you Secretariat after all these years, always will.
that red hoss was all heart
A whip was never needed he loved to run ❤️
Notice how Ronny uses body language Ronny ticks his head in at the end. Must have been a fun ride ;)
Wow 😲 big red says: not today, I'll show you something. I tear up watching this graceful champion that seems to know what's going on as he makes history. RIP you beautiful horse with a 22lb ❤️
Captured a nation. Incredible experience. Has to be top ten sports story of all time.
OH could that BIG RED horse run!!!
He LOVED to run.
True triple crown Legend!!!!!
Every time I hear the phrase... He is moving like a tremendous machine... I get chills all over my body.
Wow. Just watching that race at the Belmont Stakes after all these years still brings tears to my eyes!
There will never, ever, be another Big Red. What an animal...
No matter how many times I watch...I get chill bumps.
In the top 50 athletes of all time. While in college I had a poster of Big Red on my wall because I had never felt that way about a horse. I truly loved that horse! (and still do)
Every once in a while, God show's his presence to the world!
I guess not often enough; must be a busy guy!
pls dnt compare secretariat to any horse..he is really the greatest horse..i've never seen any horse in the past and present that runs so fast like secretariat without wipping the steak on his side
I've never been much of a horse racing fan, but it's impossible not to be wowed by the greatest horse racing performances of the century. Imagine what the track record times would have been in the Derby and Preakness if Secretariat hadn't started last.
What is helplessness? Being a jockey of a horse when Big Red decides to make his move.
Thanks for posting! Every time I see this, I think “that’s impossible.”
Sports has been my love since a kid, not horseracing but in 1972 I was 12 and this horse really won my admiration, a true champion athlete.
Don't be upset guys, legends never die 💕
He set the tracks on fire 🔥 Awesome ❤️❤️
Magnificent , Spectacular , to God be the Glory, the best that ever did it, you are missed Secretariat , Rest in Heaven❤
This never ceases to amaze me
I wasn't born when this horse was running...but he's the greatest horses in racing history that I have ever watched.
The best horse that ever lived.
Thank you for posting this. It brings back so many happy memories.
I agree, the greatest race horse ever!
Poor Sham...a great horse who happened to be born when the greatest race horse was also born.
Smartest race Horse that ever was
And will ever be. He was one of a kind.
There will never be a horse like him. I wish I could of met him
I never get tired watching this amazing talent
I have loved watching this-what a legend!!
Man, Secretariat could fly! Love this horse!!! Since I was 7, he was a superhero!
Bellissimo video, emozionante! Che grande campione! Grazie🤗
Amazing how fast he past the other horses!!! I binge watch this video.
Secretariat gave them all a head start and he won....
What a horse. I really started watching the triple crown when I saw Secretariat. To me there's no doubt this was the greatest race horse of all time.
He stole our 💕hearts, we just simply couldn't help ourselves.
I love Big Red, no one has even been close to beat his records!!! 💖💖💖
