    Love the video Shad! Those reflex horsebows are very difficult and back breaking to string. My 144lb@28 MR Tiron is also a two man job to string. I recommend the waist cable method to string it (with a non slippery string). Recurve bows typically have a more challenging pull experience than the longbows, assuming the same weight @ 28. They have a higher force draw curve, which translates to more theoretical energy, because when you plot it onto a force draw curve and interpolate the area of the curve, the D - shape longbows give a triangular-like area of interpolation, while these recurves are more curved upwards to give a larger interpolation area from the graph. Excited to see more videos from you.

    It's neat to see a popular youtuber showing that the longbow's real life genuine trait was that it was cheap and fast to produce in comparison to a more advanced recurve of laminate design. And thus cheap and faster to produce a high poundage war bow.
    And logistics like this is what wins wars. It enabled the English to both train and field lots of experienced archers because the yeoman and conscripts could afford to buy and shoot such a bow for recreation.

    • @WassabiJoe
      @WassabiJoe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Actually quality wood for such high powered bows that had to be made by thousands wasn't so easy to come by in most crucial eras and frequently had to be imported from mediterranean, Spain, or even baltic for quite a price... And when capacities didn't suffice, they outsourced the job completely, for example Venice supplied some 40k yew bows for Henry VIII.
      Still much cheaper and faster to make than composite bows of other, predominately nomadic cultures, but nowhere near a simple stick you cut from the nearest tree.
      As for recreation... Since there was a law forcing men to train with bows... I'd imagine quite alot of them didn't want to shoot them as much as is often insinuated.

    Oh, wow. You guys trying to string that bow brought back memories! When I was a kid I went to Girl Scout camp and we did archery. So, my first year of college I took a class that was half archery and half badminton. I could serve a badminton bird, but I don't think I returned a single one. However, archery was a whole other thing. The instructor told us that "you can't string a bow you can't pull." She had us pull on some 'test' bows she had already strung. She seemed surprised that I, 17 years old, 5 foot tall and 115 pounds, could pull a 35 pound bow. Then we went to select our bows and to string them. This one guy was kind of struggling with his bow, he had obviously never handled one before. The instructor had us putting the tip on the inside of the arch and string it, I showed him the leg through way as you were trying to use. Of course these were longer bows so you could put your leg through and rest the point on the outside of the food. He was still kind of fighting with it, so I said I would show him. He tried to repeat what we had been told. He was trying to string, I think, a 70 pound bow. I handed him my strung bow and proceeded to show him how to do it. Yes, I strung it. I then unstrung it and handed it back to him. Once we were all ready, we took about 5 arrows each and went out to the targets. Several people hit the target that day, I was the only one to make a bullseye. The others called me a "ringer."

    The Parthian shot is a light cavalry hit-and-run tactic made famous by the Parthians, an ancient Iranian people. While performing a real or feigned retreat at full gallop, the horse archers would turn their bodies back to shoot at the pursuing enemy. The maneuver required superb equestrian skills, since the rider's hands were occupied by his composite bow and his body was twisted around.

    That is the magic of recurved bows like this. The insane science behind how they create their force allows them to be vastly smaller and have smaller draws than a longbow and still easily have the same ranges of poundage.
    Also you need to learn the technique for drawing those kind of bows as they are definitely different than a longbow and you could hurt yourself drawing it wrong.

    The extra curves are what add the extra draw weight, first you bend the bigger limbs, and once they start maxing out you start bending the smaller ones, so the draw weight increases rapidly once you start bending those smaller curves. Absolutely genius design, can never underestimate the intelligence of medieval craftsmen.

    • @liarwithagun
      @liarwithagun 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I've only barely dipped my toes in physics, but I'd guess it has something to do with storing potential (kinetic) energy in the multiple curves using tension instead of the single one of a longbow.

    • @jkre
      @jkre 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Not at all correct. The smaller ones, called siyahs, are ridgid, they do not bend, they act as a lever. In this case the levers are in use from the start of the draw, so this bow doesn't have the two stage draw of contact siyah bows, where the string is touching the knee of the siyah, so its bending the limbs first without lever assistance and after the levers start to point backwards, they start to assist more and more, resulting in rapid increase of draw weight at the early draw, that evens out for the end to increase slowly in the end because the full length of siyah leverage is in use.
      Siyahs main purpose is to increase draw length, these bows are originally made from sinew, wood and horn, and most horns are not long enough to give the bow enough draw length, so they make the bow longer with the siyahs, witch are only wood, some cases strengthent with horn plates on the sides. Wood is also lighter than horn, so making wooden siyahs instead of limbs for the whole length saves moving mass and thus increasing the performance of the bow. Earliest composite bows didn't have wooden siyahs, like egyptian, assyrian etc. bows, but bows with siyahs replaced those older designs.
      Siyah also increases the draw length, not only by making the bow longer, but also by altering the string angle, so that the bow reaches the 90° string angle, where the bow stacks and doesn't want to bend more, later.
      Later invention of contact siyahs, gave the siyahs the ability to have the two stage draw, I already explained. This design made to extreme (manchu bow) gives the bow the most amount of stored energy of all traditional bows, and thus can send heavier arrows flying the speed of other bows lighter arrows, making the kinetic energy and momentum higher than from any other traditional bow type of same draw weight.

    That's a cool little tester with the winch. With that you should measure your bows inch-by-inch from zero, then you could plot the full draw curve for them. Length of pull is more important than a lot of people know, not just because the weight increases with distance but also because energy is force _times_ distance, so a 200lb crossbow with a tiny length of pull might not be more powerful than a bow with less draw weight but a greater length of pull.

      This isn't just a composite bow (in period often a mix of one or more types of wood and bone or horn laminated together) it is also a recurve. This shape like the cams on a compound bow makes that difference in how hard it is to draw the further it is pulled back and how easy it is to hold and aim once full draw is reached.
      D&D artwork, descriptions and stats are often incorrect, especially in the simplified 5e.
      A simply single wood straight bow is a simple weapon, but the D&D longbow might be as well, it's a hunting bow not a warbow.
      This why I'm going to the trouble of making my own weapons tables.

    • @jkre
      @jkre 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      D&D like every other game and movie go by the modern standard bigger is always better. But that just isn't true. Not in the case of bow performance. Bows power comes from 3 different things, witch are first stored energy, meaning the draw weight, not only the max draw weight, but a draw weight per each inch of draw makes a draw curve, witch shows the stored energy way more accurately than just the draw weight at max draw length. Second draw length, the more time for the arrow has to accelerate, the faster it is. And third the bows efficiency, meaning how much of the stored energy is actually transfered to the arrow, and that is effected by the moving mass. The stored energy has to move all the moving mass, including the mass of the bow limbs, the string and the arrow.
      Bigger bow means more mass, more mass means more of the bows stored energy is used to move the bow it self, so less energy is used to move the arrow. Longer limb also means more bendier, so for the same draw weight longer limb also has to be more thicker. So extra mass not only from the length, but from the thickness also. String weight also affects on the speed, and longer the string is, the heavier it is.
      How ever shorter bows stacks earlier than longer ones, that is caused by the string angle reaching 60 (where the draw weight starts to increase more per inch of draw than earlier, meaning the stacking starts and 90 degrees sooner, witch is the point where the string no longer bends the limbs, but tries to pull them backwards, where the stacking is so high, the bow doesn't wanna be drawn any further.. Luckily with design that string angle can be changed, so by recurving the bow, the shorter bow can be drawn longer than without recurves, and this short bows draw length can match longer bows draw length, or even exceed it. This shads little bow doesn't have enough recurve to match shads longbows draw lengths, it would have to be either longer or have more aggressive recurves in order to do so. This little bow just isn't made for as long draw length, but it doesn't mean than any same size bow couldn't do more. The 60 degree start of the stacking can come earlier than in longbows, meaning that the stored energy is less in the stacking bow than in the longbow that doesn't stack, that evens out little bit of the advantage of the lighter moving mass design of the shorter bow, but even still the shorter bow many times can out perform the longbow, and it will outperform it, if the both bows are equally well made, but higher quality longbow can outperform lower quality short recurve bow.
      Bowyers skill has huge impact on the bows efficiency, the bowyer needs to know how much material is enough to handle the stress, but also how much is too much to have too much mass. Both over stressing and too much mass lowers the bows efficiency. And ofcourse if its way too little bit of material, the bow will break, and if too much the mass will slow it down and cause hand shock.

    On a more serious note, I assume that the bows are over-strong because they will relax/age into their designed draw weight over time. So it is compensatory to lengthen the life of the bow. I have heard that there is a different draw technique as well that might be worth trying (if it is even valid); instead of pulling the draw back, start with the bow close in, string at draw position. Step forward while pushing the bow out, keeping the string where it should be when readied to loose.. Mechanically, it lets you push out from your center mass instead of trying to pull something in from outside of center mass.

    And about the D&D reference... even D&D had the "composite bow" (at least in 3.x) which was essentially a historical recurve (they were called composite because they weren't made from only wood, but also included leather and parts made out of goat or cow horn) and allowed to add some of the Strength modifier (I think they went up to 3) to damage without being magical.

      @jkre 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Composite bows were carried strung, they can be strung months in a time, and only loosing about 10% of the draw weight, witch has been tested multiple times. The bows were so strong that they were still strong enough even after losing that 10% of the draw weight. And that draw weight can be restored to them after wards. Witch isn't the case with wooden bows, witch is why wooden bows needed to be carried unstrung and only just before battle strung. That gives composite bows extra advantage in ambushes, when the longbows would still be unstrung when the fighting starts, but composite bow is strung and quickly accessable in its holster.

      It's Mary Rose bow, and yes, it was Henry VIII's flag ship, so the archers would have been the best of the best, so their bows were also the best. That's why there is bows up to 200 pounds draw weight, that wasn't the norm, it was just the elite, and even quite rare in the elite. Most of the mary rose bows are around 150 pounds.
      Because of Mary Rose bows, many believe that english longbows were always made out of yew, but that's not true. The amount of yew was running low, because of longbow mass production, so there was a rule that bowyers had to make 2 bows from other woods for every yew bow they made. That means that 2 thirds of all bows were other woods and the other woods were elm, ash and oak, maybe some others, but mainly those 3.

      @@bigernbladesmith That is quite hard to say. Somewhere in Eurasia is likely. My initial point is simply that the location in which they were invented is irrelevant. Unless the bow comes from Asia, it isn’t an asiatic bow. People used long straight limbed mulberry self bows in northern China for many thousands of years. Would you call those European bows because Europe is the likely place of the invention of the selfbow?

    Don't mess your shoulder up, that thing is a different animal from a longbow. You're contorting yourself in weird ways trying to draw to 28". Pound per pound the shorter the bow the harder it's going to be to draw with all that string pinch, especially since you're describing it stacking up around 27". You're used to drawing to the ear with longbows at 32", it's really only the longbow guys who ever seem to draw that far. You're way over bowed and a bad injury can happen all at once with no warning that it's even coming, then you're out of action for an untold amount of time, often a long time.
    All that out of the way, recurves are usually going to shooter harder pound per pound, it stores the energy more efficiently. You probably only need a 75# to equal your longbow. I can tell you my 75#@28" Martin Hunter shoots a 700 grain arrow at 170-175 fps with b-50 string (drawn to 28"), I'd wager that's probably comparable energy if not even exceeding your longbow. I've read plenty of accounts of horsebows often being very fast bows, surprising even the regular recurve guys. So that horsebow might be a little monster when you work yourself up to shooting it well. There's a reason warbow archers get so much credit for their insane draw weights, it's likely because they were making up where their gear was lacking. Longbows are still amazing, little change since the stone ages, very timeless.

      Actually in comparison to asiatic archery, longbows 32" draw is on the shorter end. This bysantine bow maxes out in that 28" (27 from the belly) of draw length, because of its design, it's at 28" already a string angle of 90°, and after that point the string just pulls the limbs back, instead of bending them and the bow stacks.
      And about that draw length, 32-33" is very common in most asian countries, some draw less like 28-30" like turkish bows, and some draw longer like 36" for manchu bows and from tall guys in japanese yumis even up to 40". These long draws are possible with thumb draw, that naturally gives 2" more draw length than finger draw, just because thumb is closer to the palm of the hand, and in addition the wrist position is more natural so it is easier to draw longer just because of that.
      I can give my self as an example. I'm 162cm or 5'4" i believe for americans. So pretty hobbit. My modern draw to the corner of my mouth is 25,5" from the back of the bow, like it is officially measured. My medieval english style draw is just shy of 29", my comfortable thumb draw is 30", my max thumb draw is 32" and with manchu thumb ring that's design gives extra inch, is 33". So even a hobbit like me can draw (instead of 25,5") 33" easily, bit uncomfortable, but still easily. Armin hirmer of malta archery has were nice youtube archery channel, possibly the very best one, in terms of asiatic archery (modern mostly, some real composites also, but very few, and very cheap and crappy ones). He about average in hight, and he can draw full 36" manchu draw.

    Just a tip, if you are right handed, hook one end over you left shin and with the grip behind your right leg so you can use your stronger arm to bend the bow and string it with your left.

    1 stand up.
    2 place one end of bow on left foot.
    3 put right leg through the centre of the bow between shaft and string(string in front of you) and use your right thigh to push the handle out while pushing/pulling the top end down.
    4 string bow.
    5 stand up straight and bring leg out of bow.
