  • I have had quite a few questions regarding what conditions I keep and breed my rams I. To be so successful with them.
    My current fry count is in the thousands with many of my fish out there in the hobby as we speak. There are no secrets on this channel and so here it is - the basis to my success.
    I hope you enjoy the video. Please like and subscribe and make sure to comment and get the Ram cichlid discussion going.
    Thanks to everyone who has subscribed already! I have so many ideas and plans for the near future:)

    I live in Thailand, we have hot weather. I keep my Rams outdoors in unfiltered pots / urns in which i grow water lilies. They breed like crazy on their own and the only think i have to do is supply the babies with small live food that I culture in another container. I also breed betta fish the same way.

    I love how you are keeping them in the planted tank! I see Dean breeds them like crazy in bare tanks, but my thing has always been keeping fish in as natural environment as possible. I think with Rams the most important thing you can remember is temperature requirements and clean water.

    I bought a breeding pair about 2 months ago now. I got the second batch of eggs, day before yesterday. First batch of fry are now 11 days old. Getting bigger every day. Got my third brood of angels as well. Now wrigglers but expect them to be free swimming tomorrow. I have watched this video several times. Catch something new every time. Just wanted to say though that I put my rams into a planted tank and they didn't do anything. I put them into another tank that was set up and cycled but had no plants and no gravel. I put in some fake plants and a couple empty clean clay flower pots and bam, 2 broods of eggs. Thanks for your time putting in these awesome videos.

    The problem with keeping the aquarium at 84 to 86 degrees is that most plants don’t like temperatures above 82 max; thus, keeping Rams and Discus in a heavily planted aquarium is a very difficult balance indeed!

      Hi there, Barb! Welcome back to the discussion:) I am sorry this has been the case. Before I can help you I need to know a few details.
      1. Did you use dechlorinator?
      2. How much water did you change?
      3. What is the temp of your water in this tank on average?
      Another possibility is that it has no correlation to the water change at all. Do you have a picture of the fish that died prior to it dying? If so, send it to one of my social media platforms and I will take a closer look for you.
      I will definitely take this suggestion and use it sometime in the near future.

    Whats the ideal tank size for them? Best fish to put them with in your opinion?

    • @JustinsFishRoom
      @JustinsFishRoom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say, bigger is better. I breed my original pair in my 4 ft by 1 ft by 2 ft community aquarium and they are very successful. In saying that, I have seen people breed rams and keep rams in tanks that measure 609 x 320 x 320 mm and so on. I guess it all depends on how much time you are willing to spend maintaining their water quality etc with bigger tanks having more stable water chemistry.
      They are very peaceful cichlids, and so any community fish are a good fit. I would recommend not putting other dwarf cichlids with them. They can become territorial to other fish that fill the same niche they do.
      Hope this helps:)

      Hi there Gavin! Always happy to answer questions:)
      a) At the moment I have 8 pairs in one tank, however, I only recommend one pair or a breeding trio. The reason I have so many is because I'm getting ready to build a fish room
      b)My pair are great parents but always lose their fry to the other hungry fish in the community tank. I would recommend, if they are in a community tank, to pull the eggs out and artificially hatch them. If not, then let them have a few goes at parenting their fry:)
      c) I only change the water now once a week - especially during a storm - as my planted tank is very stable in terms of water chemistry. I would say do a once weekly 25% water change as a rule of thumb but keep on top of your water parameter tests to tweak that as necessary.
      Hope this helps, and Nick and myself are so grateful for you purchase. Happy Ram breeding! Let me know if you have more questions:)

    • @JustinsFishRoom

      Hey Tim! Thanks for your question. R/O or Reverse Osmosis is great at getting rid of a lot of chemical components in water that could hinder, say, breeding of discus fish or stimulation of breeding etc. Personally, I don't use my R/O system regularly (even though I have one). This is because it is not necessary for a lot of fish. In Brisbane, tap water is pretty good in terms of TDS and all other parameters. Hi there! Yes, you can put one plant in. However, I would recommend putting as many in as possible. The more the better and the reason is that plants are an innate storage unit if you like. The more plants you have the more recycling of nutrients in your tank will take place and, thus, removal of toxic waste such as ammonia (NH3). I hope this helps😄👍

      @@CrowntailHalfmoon It depends from pair to pair. Ultimately, its a good idea to see what your setup and/or pair require. I would recommend feeding high quality cichlid dry food and frozen live food. • @JustinsFishRoom
      @JustinsFishRoom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is definitely doable. All of those fish seem compatible enough and if you keep the water quality good, a pair rams would do really well in that setup😉

    do u know if a blue ram female breed with the usual variety of male ram fish!

    • @JustinsFishRoom
      @JustinsFishRoom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, a very commonly asked question believe it or not. I explain this in two ways. 1) Microgeophagus ramirezii is the fish's scientific name. All of those colour and shape varieties are still a part of this classification and, hence, can create inter-specific hybrids with each other. 2) In my experience, Rams do seem to pair off with others of a similar colour to themselves over a ram that looks very different but it is possible and has been done:)

      @@mufidirawan7987 It could be that they are overwhelmed by the number of larger fish and especially because you have larger cichlids in their with them. Your temperature seems good. Maybe try put more plants and cover in there to make them feel more confident to venture out:)

    Is a 10 gallon tank to small for 1 Ram

    • @JustinsFishRoom
      @JustinsFishRoom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say 10 gallons may be okay for a ram if you have the tank in a centrally heated area. The reason I say this is due to the fact that in a smaller volume of water, the temp can fluctuate quite a lot. Also, to prevent fluctuations in water chemistry I would suggest doing regular water changes. Hope this helps:)

    The topic should be raised that they are fish that are suitable for Aquarium as apposed to 'monster fish keepers' that dont care for their fish they just stick them in a box or a tiny pond thinking their special.......but dont get me wrong cause some people keep fish in way too small aquarium for even Ram / dwarf cichlids/ dwarf pleco or tetra shouldnt even be in, in fact Tetra shoul and therefore should be in a range of up to around two dozen in a 6ft tank, with the other species stated for instance, to be correct and factual

      This seems to be the general consensus when it comes to the dwarf cichlids. However, that is why I am doing these videos, so people that face the same predicament as you can having a fighting chance 😄👍

    The "ONLY effective way"? A little pretentious, no. Saying a planted tank is the only way to breed them, then saying "Well, if youre commercial or dont have time for plants, but this is aimed at beginners". Yeah, okay. Id wager most hobbyist breeders (especially beginners who dont usually keep live plants) who breed them for fun do it in bare tanks. Also, Neon Tetras are a terrible tankmate as they require much cooler temps.

      You made some great points! The title is purely just to attract attention. You are very right about the neon tetras too - they do like cold water but I have had no problems keeping them with rams at all. The points made in the video are a guide and you don't have to follow them and I have found they work best. I appreciate your input and respect your opinions. Thank you and I hope you have a really great day:)
