  • From October 16th, Martin & Belle out hawking. Belle flies a ways off and deals with a raven. Martin, a master falconer, talks about how it could end badly for the raven. Though Belle was a little over ideal flying weight, she still made many attempts to catch jackrabbits. Martin discusses how and why monitoring her weight is so important. He also discusses the need to work with a bird best suited to the type of region you will be working with the bird in and the quarry available.
Throughout their wander, Belle makes many attempts to catch jackrabbits. She does get fooled by a couple smart ones, but not deterred, she also catches more than one. The jackrabbits she caught will provide food to the sick and injured animals we care for.

    Our Mission
Founded in 1997 in Cedar City Utah, we are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, wildlife and environmental education, and the development of the Cedar Canyon Nature Park.
    Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release
The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100 sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal, but for those that cannot be released due to disabilities, the Cedar Canyon Nature Park (CCNP) can provide them with a permanent home in a natural setting while enhancing our visitors educational experience at the park.
    Informing, Educating and Inspiring
The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000 people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations to enjoy.
    Martin Tyner
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.

I am a hunter myself, and nature & wildlife. protector. I live in Germany. I admire your work for years on TH-cam.
I very much taught you how to deal with the birds of prey. Thanks to this, I know how to hand-harp a bird of prey when it is an emergency.
Don't worry, I will of course contact the local wildlife station beforehand :)

Fantastically interesting in real time like this...thank you. I learned so much about all of the factors involved as to why she will or will not hunt a certain way. I love this education, this is my new favorite TH-cam station. I’m thrilled to learn something new about the creation. The incredible variety of different birds as well as their very special and specific need, further builds my faith in the creator. The bird kingdom is so vast and varied, but they are only one of the kingdoms available for study, it’s mind boggling to think of all the creation out there that is to know and understand! It’s what helps me to appreciate that man was meant to live forever when the Bible says that “God has put eternity” into our hearts

It would be so very cool to see Martin actually win that Wildlife prize which he has been nominated for (and the 100k of course hehe 😜). After 50 years of pure dedication and teaching about the raptors, this really would be the right time for something like this IMHO. And absolutely also the right person. Ahh well, we'll see how it turns out. Wish you all the luck for it!! Especially since Martin also isn't getting any younger of course, and to invest in a new generation to keep this important work going.

Truly fascinating and inspiring also. The noisy bells were driving me crazy, but I trust you know what you are doing by now. I frequently go fishing offshore and wonder if an osprey would be able to be worked with.

Jack #1 ("That's a fight") would have Dragged Belle half way across the Valley b4 it was finished off (with injury to the Hawk), If not for Belle's Loyal "Dog" :) She Earned her Treats on that one for sure!

Yesterday was the first time I watched one of your eagle rehab videos and today discovered the falconry, amazing and very interesting, thanks for the insight, it’s something I never really thought about. I’ll continue looking. Not sure if you cover it but would be interested in see how you capture a untrained bird and if they ever get lost, also do they ever return to the wild.
I’m 70 yo and realize it’s a little late in life to start a hobby like this but find the interaction between bird and man fascinating .

Great Job Belle 2 Rabbits in one hunt. Martin how many rabbits has Belle caught in one outing?

  • @birdiemomcarol6554

Belle is so beautiful!! You really get a chance to get a close up look at her gorgeous coloring when the sun is right on her. Wow!!! I just love watching her fly and hunt and then get to see the final result of all that hard work. It is, however, a little difficult to hear the squeal but it’s part of nature.
I have a question on the first rabbit. I couldn’t tell but did Belle “kill” the rabbit or did you do that Martin? Just curious if she gets to complete her task to the end. What a great adventure to watch. I’m envious!! I wish I could be there right along side watching it all and enjoying that lovely creature , Belle🥰🥰!! Thank you Martin for teaching us all about these wonderful birds.

A truly realistic video of falconry who is some really wonderful comments. It's not for the squeamish. Falconers used to cut off part of the captured animal and give it to the bird. That's the same as giving it some food and taking the whole rabbit carcass. The food the bird is getting is probably better for her than a peace of wild rabbit.

It's wonderful to see that beautiful girl hunt. I know some people might be distressed about the rabbit, but we must remember, this is how nature works and it's important for everyone to understand that this is, after all, nature's beautiful balance. Well done, Belle. How often are raptors injured while hunting?

Q: How does she not or do birds like Belle hurt themselves especially their wings whilst they're outstretched when they catch their prey and they're dragged through some of the shrubbery in dense foliage the Rabbits run to or try to get to once she has a hold..

    • @GowildlifeOrg

Sometimes they do get injured. Her feathers can get pretty damaged. It's not easy in the wild.

Quite a show of love between the man and the bird. Did it happen that she bit him in the excitement of the moment when Martin gets the rabbit under the bag? I am just wondering.

26:45 This behaviour right here (flapping to stay on top of the prey and the mantling after the rabbit is immobilized) is likely one of the reasons wings evolved in the first place and why a lot of non-avian dinosaurs had them despite being too large to fly.

Hello Belle. Tell Daddy to bring my friend the Falcon a long to kill the Raven so I don’t burn up my strength. Martin love your videos and I am retired now an looking to get a sponsor to teach me Falconry in Ohio. My question to you Martin in Ohio my first Bird has to be a Redtail Hawk, do you have one sex would be best for my first Bird of Prey? It is awesome to learn from your Videos.
