I agree with you in terms of the lyrics, i remember seeing a clip where an interviewer asked them their inspiration behind their lyrics and they couldn't answer and admitted that they don't write most of their lyrics.
i also agree with what you said about girls potentially striving to be them. their message is intended to be about female empowerment but half of their lyrics are about how they're hotter and better than other women. it doesn't help that some of their fandom is misogynistic, especially towards other artists with female dominant demographics

I also kind just went shrug it's meant to be female empowerment, and probably mostly for teen girls who want the confidence boost of singing along BUT they are so sexual that it really rubs me the wrong way, if it is for teens. because if so that's children... like the song Ice Cream really tipped the scales for me

    • @blueturtle1813

@@lilyduck4538 first of all, their lyrics aren't female empowerment at all, kind of the opposite. They just talk about how pretty and rich they're and how they're better than anyone else
Second, I Don't agree with their music being for teenagers, they're still musicians even if they're not really artists. Music are for everyone to listen to. I hate how western media like to paint Eastern especially Korean music as children music

that's why I left that fandom. We waited for so long. We were fine as long as the girls kept us updated on how they're doing and how they're making their music or just something you know. But when they reappeared they sing that line , like wth , it's like a mockery to us . We were streaming and rewatching their shows from the past three years but what were they doing, they were going on fashion shows . That's all they do . Even at the concert, we had to flew twelve hours to watch them , but we got the same old thing again, and Jennie and Rose seemed they were lost on the stage, sometimes even bored. I was officially out. We were defending them again and again but that was the call . My sister is a huge Kpop enthusiastic. She called me unfaithful. Damn it what is faith ? How are we supposed to support someone who don't give a f about their craft. I was out right then . And my sister followed later. That was a wild experience being a Kpop fan .

I hope that Blinks will finally take this in the spirit in which it was intended now that a man has said it. Because if you're a woman telling them this they immediately accuse you of jealousy and misogyny instead of a legitimate critique. This is a part of why the group hasn't grown artistically. Their fans will just tell you "You just hate them because they're women and they're rich and prettier than you", hence proving the extent to which they've absorbed the group's message. I'm not saying that these women don't get actual undeserved hate, but everything does not fall under that category.

I appreciate your honesty and agree! I wish the girls all the best but you pinpoint exactly what bothers me about their music- the brand of empowerment they're selling is not just materialistic, but directly serves capitalist values. It doesn't empower girls to love themselves more as they are or to aspire to more beyond looking hot and spending a lot of money. Which is fine to aspire towards, but not as an end goal to life. There needs to be more soul substance.
I'll shake ass to some of their songs if it comes on at a party ig but it's not something I feel like listening to beyond that. BTS music gives me something to reflect on and allows me to think about myself and the world from a new perspective; or makes me feel understood, in some corners of my existence that have rarely even felt seen, let alone accepted.

Once asked a classmate why they like bp and they just said it's because they're cool and hip and that their music is catchy that's it. I think the fact that they can't speak korean but can sing along with bp songs because of the onomatopoeic and repetitive lyrics adds to why they like bp's song...
I always feel so left out with my classmate cause they always play bp cause it's hip but once somebody plays a bts song you're cringe 😢

I’ve seen people say how hard some of their raps are to learn and tbh I, a non listener non fan of the group, could memorize those raps. And it’s exactly like you said, their lyrics are very repetitive and it seems like their prioritize good sounding syllables to actual cohesive lyrics because then people who don’t speak the language can learn it easier.
I think it also speaks to this article I had to read for a class I took where they talked about how gg’s are marketed to fans as if they can be a part of the group by doing things like learning the dances and lyrics. Which to me could explain why gg dances and lyrics seem to be a lot easier to repeat

TBH I often wait for people who first discover BTS to react to BP just to see how genuine they can be with their opinions about lyrics and music. You are a gem Loui. Not only you took the time (3 videos!) to really give them a chance but you have valid arguments for your opinion.
Personally, I do not like BP, I feel like they started well but did nothing to grow as musicians through the years - the songs sound similar to each other and there is a little to them when it comes to lyrics. They are not representing the k-pop stage well in my opinion so I was happy to see you checking MAMAMOO who are solid artists. I would give a go to LaSerrafim and New Jeans as well - they are quite new girl groups but they released good music so far. Oh, and out of boys groups I feel like you would enjoy TXT who are boy group - a little bit like younger brothers to BTS. Their albums were very good so far and they have very strong dance and live performances.

BTS and kpop groups are world's apart. When you listen to BTS you can feel their sincerity and 'them' in their music. It is because they come from very humble backgrounds and worked their arse up. Every music that comes from them is their own - they write their lyrics, their stories, and create their beats. They have a 'say' in their work. They had to struggle to get where they're now and their only cheat code was talent & hard work. Unlike these other groups that come from bigger influential companies who sing someone else lyrics in someone else's song. Not an ounce of artistry in them.
When I got into BTS first, I thought all kpop was same but was so underwhelmed. Not even 1% of sincerity or artistry in their work. I'm proud to be an ARMY for BTS only. They're my life's artist and I'm forever grateful towards them. They were the first artist I got into and I am sure is my last and forever.

Try Mamamoo, they have really similar path to BTS (from poor company to build their label more famose and "Mamamoo company" basically). Hwasa, for example, fight against toxic beauty standards (like "if I am not suitable I will be my one standard"), also in their music topics like self love, being just yourself, take it easy sometimes and other stuff. Also their live performances are CRAZY. Literally live strong vocals all the time and stage presence is crazy (also I like how they engage with audience (when they change lyrics for example for different famous celebrities in audience or specific place, for example).

Also, it's not just coming from humble backgrounds you know, it's also BTS's music, personality and just them as people that connects me to them. I have been an army for over 7 years now, and before finding BTS I am what now we all call 'a GP'. I had no interest in musicians and didn't even get the fan culture. You’ve just learned about 95% of k-pop from watching Blackpink.
I have absolutely no hate towards the artists in Blackpink. They're clearly talented and beautiful and they work hard. It more an industry-wide problem to focus on visuals, beats/beat drops, and choreography and sort of forget about the melodies, lyrics, and messaging.
BTS were nurtured as ARTISTS and the differences between them and most other k-pop artists get wider and wider as they mature as full-grown musicians given that early nurturing.
Not all k-pop is like this, but most of it is. There are some other groups that write/produce their own stuff. I personally dont like most of it (I like a song here or there). Most ARMYs give k-pop a chance and most end up sticking with BTS.

And while I like a couple of their older songs, I haven't vibed with them for a long time, and hearing those 2 new songs kind of cemented it. I do agree the beats and drops can be a draw, but it also just seems like a cacophony of sounds at times without enough of a voice of who they are and what's actually important to them as artists.
As far as, "maybe it's because I'm not a girl..." no. That's the problem - these are lyrics written by a 40+ year old man for young women.

I agree with what you said about their lyrics that's exactly what drives me away from them. It's like I know they're talented we can see that, but why are their lyrics so meaningless, there's never any clear story throughout their music videos either. I love a good concept, like I need some art please. It also helps me enjoy an artist when they actually have writing/producing credits on their songs, but bp rarely ever do. My problem with BlackPink is that you can see the claws of their company and corporation behind every single thing they do. Their songs are all about 'female empowerment' but how much input in the words they're saying have they even had? Honestly Pink Venom and Shut Down feel like how much cultural appropriation can you put into a song to profit from... They have '1 by 1 even 2 by 2' from Rihanna, 'you couldn't get a dollar out of me' by 50 cent, the flow in one part is literally a carbon copy of a Cardi B verse, Shut Down has a lot of UK Grime elements, there's more but these are just the ones coming to my mind. And again, being inspired and adapting music you like into your own artistic expression with homage is totally fine! BTS does this constantly, they are so rooted in American Hip Hop but they have taken it and transformed it into something which is their own, done their research and truly embodied it. BlackPink get handed a song that someone copy pasted other better artists work into and repeat it along with random noises. I want to be super clear that I'm not shitting on the girls themselves, I do think that they have talent and potential but it's like their entire artistic license has been squeezed dry from them by the company while they go on about how 'confident' and how much 'better' they are. I can't imagine that behind the scenes they are actually fulfilled and inspired or have high self worth honestly. As a woman I don't see them and think 'wow what confident, inspiring women' I see them and feel disgusted at the way the patriarchy and capitalism has taken advantage of them. It's honestly unsettling for me. But I can imagine that to impressionable young girls who are feeling like they're not enough, they would think this is peak confidence and jump right on board to try to be like them. But as you said, that's so harmful! It's not reality!!! You'll never be the prettiest or the best at anything no matter who you are but you are so beautiful and special because you're just you and that's more than enough. I would hope that the BlackPink members themselves would one day be able to do some soul searching of their own and really find out who they are and what they personally love, because I see absolutely none of that here. The only alternative theory to them being dragged along and controlled into this narrative honestly is that behind the scenes they're actually awful people with giant ego complexes who think they're better than everyone but I don't know them so want to give them the benefit of the doubt. Anyway, moving on lol!

This really resonates with me. I've heard a couple blackpink songs that I've enjoyed, but i 'enjoyed' them the same way I enjoy other k-pop songs: as a purely auditory listening experience. A sort of "Oh, this is fun to listen to :)" sort of vibe. But when I think of music I love? I cherish? That I think about, come back to again and again? It's never been Blackpink. They've never inspired any genuine emotion in me.
RM once said something along the lines of, when he makes music, his goal isn't necessarily to write a song you fall in love with completely immediately. He wants to write music that you come back to. That you read the lyrics for once and interpret it one way, just to listen to it again later and interpret it differently. That's the kind of relationship I like with music, and that's the only type of music that could inspire any sort of fantacism in me. That's why the only artist I've ever genuinely ~stanned~ is BTS. They have that, as well as genuinely enjoyable music in spades.

Because BTS didn’t come up in one of the ‘big 3’ idol/k-pop producing labels, they were allowed to move a little differently and be more independent and produce music that is more honest, more political, more real, and more expressive. Not saying you shouldn’t give k-pop a chance! It makes their lyrics sound more materialistic and more grounded in capitalism. It isn't a reflection of what empowerment is (because I can assure you that getting rich is one element of empowerment, not empowerment itself) so to me their image screams "if you're pretty and rich you're powerful" which really isn't the case out in the real world. Yeah their songs are nice to jam to once in a while, but if I'm looking for art I'll just look elsewhere.

as much as its really nice of you to give them another chance, i feel like if you dont like one blackpink song ur probably not gonna like most of their discography since each one of their releases have almost exactly the same formula and lyrics💀 "they have talent tho" yeah for sure which is pretty sad bc i feel like all of their potential gets wasted by the company that forces this overused "bad bitches better than everyone" concept on them instead of letting them grow musically and develop their own artistic essences. i think it would be for the best if the group just disbanded and each girl were to go in her own direction, maybe that way they could as least have some artistic freedom and show their true colors

honestly even their solo stuff is just very controlled i mean just looking at "lalisa", which is even worse than the group stuff, i mean imagine having a self title single and album that's supposed to be about YOU but you haven't wrote a single line and all it says is "lalisa love me lalisa love me" over and over again. This could only work if they don't renew their contract and go to another company, or just make music independtly which probably ain't gonna happen since the girls have never even produced or wrote a full song by themselves and that takes a lot of practice to learn. U don't just suddenly become a songwriter after years of singing bullshit handed out to you every 2 years.

I don't see any talents or potential for each individuals. Rappers can't write a verse or make bits or melody, singers have been singing in same tone and tonality since their debut. @@anais3913 i have to disagree there, i think rose's voice is absolutely beautiful and with a help of a good vocal coach she could do wonders with it, same with jennie who on top of that has an outstanding stage presence (people may argue with that but just look at her during their coachella performance, i think the whole "acting lazy" situation right now boils down to her just simply not enjoying blackpink stages that much anymore therefore she doesn't even bother to try, but when she DOES enjoy it .. man you just can't take your eyes off her) and lisa imo should just stick to dancing bc that's her biggest(ekhm only) strength. as for writing and producing skills .. yeah they might not have much experience with that but i don't see why they couldn't reach at least a decent level if they had some actually good producers and lyricists to work with who could help them and guide them along the way. i mean just look at bts, they started off with rap line producing and writing most stuff while the vocal line members were only contributing little bits here and there, but they didn't stop at that, they were continuously learning and developing their own skills and here we are now, all of them ready to actually work on their personal solo projects and jimin just dropped a fucking incredible album where he is not only credited as a lyricist producer and composer but also he played some instruments himself. no one is really born with any 'talent' or a specific set of skills but people learn if only they are given a chance and have actual passion for what they're doing

im not gonna lie Tribe, BLACKPINK was the group that got me into kpop and even tho they're one of my fav girl groups, THERE'S A REASON why i resonate with BTS ALOT more than i do with BLACKPINK even tho i discoverd BLACKPINK and became a kpop fan first.
PERSONALLY, I like BP's music bc of how their songs SOUND.. Not bc of their lyrics lol.. As a matter of fact, when 12 year old me discovered them in 2019, their lyrics never bothered me because come on-💀 i was literally a curious 12 year old so i never really pay attention to lyrics BUT when i became an ARMY in 2021, ALL OF THAT CHANGED! BTS's deep and thoughtful lyricism is EVERYTHING I NEVER KNEW I NEEDED and it has helped me soooooo much in my life. 💜 Not only did i fall in love with pretty much their entire discography but those 7 men are so random, down to earth, smart, charitable, funny and FINE ASL! 😭like HOW COULD I NOT BE HOOKED??
Im SO GLAD i found BTS cuz they literally proved that you can have music that NOT ONLY SOUNDS GOOD IN UR EARS, but ALSO has SUBSTANCE and REAL EMOTION.
As a fan of BP, i can say that substance is definitely something they lack most of the time but i don't hold that against them. Asides from your honesty (which I appreciate a lot) I also really like how you word your opinion on stuff. Like I definitely feel the same way you do about black pink and their music. There’s just no substance at all. Their producers/writers chose a specific formula and just copy paste it for every song. Even for the solo song, you could tell it was just another blackpink copy paste. It sounded Exactly like the others, which is actually insane.
I personally cannot enjoy music not only so void of meaning, but of life itself. I don’t think these songs are even good as thoughtless party music, coz they’re just so damn flat. Repeat an annoying chorus over and over again, over a non-changing noise-like instrumental, with an added switch at the last, like, 20 seconds. That’s literally It. I mean, if you enjoy it, kudos to you! Keep doing you and enjoying what you enjoy. Im just being real.

first of all, thank you for being real. i am sure you must have heard this a lot but it's a really rare quality in reactors to keep it real.
sorry for the big rant on here, but watching this i had a lot of thoughts so lol just need to put it out i guess. i just have a lot of frustrations and i have been a fan for six years so lmao if anyone comes for me just know i have witnessed all this stuff and i know how this works. so don't come at me. no need to read thought its just me being angry lmaosjd
i don't usually say this stuff so yeah... i listened to bts first from kpop, and seeing how good they are (especially after getting to know their roots in hip-hop) i went out looking for other artists in kpop because i thought that if not everyone, at least someone should be as good right? blackpink had just debuted like barely a year ago and even then they had a lot of hype around them, a lot of my friends told me to check them out when i asked for recs.... it was a very underwhelming experience to say the least, but i thought that as the years go by they will find their creative direction as a group and their music will evolve. it's been six years since then if i am not wrong, and there is absolutely no change.
i had realised way before though that bts are an anomaly in kpop. this is why i hate it when the whole damn world keeps bts and them at the same pedestal. these girls are talented and actually can do better but.. they don't? their fans keep saying the reason they don't have any hand in their music is because of their company and i would have listened to it if they were a new group just starting by. but bro six years down your career, allegedly a group with the same power as some of the biggest in the industry and your money keeps the company afloat and you want me to believe you are still treated like that? take a stand i dont know? it's your career, i would have been so tired if i was told to just keep saying the same thing just with different synonyms in every song.
and the thing is their whole concept is women empowerment or girlbossing, but we established it in 2000's itself how toxic that mindset is. this is what people call toxic feminism because what they are doing is harming others. it's rare to be as attractive as them, or be as rich, so as you said it just makes you feel more bad. but no they are kept at the same level as bts when there is no need to! bts are on an another league it's okay to accept that. what i hate more is the group and their company itself keep saying the same. their whole career is made on the "bts only women" concept, like i am tired bro. also this thing with treated kpop as a genre when it's an industry will never get fail to amuse me.. this is why if you are an army and you say you just like bts as a team, you are treated as someone who is snobby or has a superiority complex. i remember the amount of hate i got just for being an army. why do i need to like every damn group in existence out there? it's not my taste that's all. i might have a few songs saved but that's all really, i don't need people treating me like some weird person just because i openly said i don't vibe with others.
people run around saying all this shit about armys being toxic, and the worst fandom when seriously all we do is listen to bts and support them. yes there are some bad eggs but which fandom doesn't? TT atleast we don't mobilize with 10's or 20's of other fandoms to target one group and push them down (exactly what they did lmao we weren't even big then). most people here are for music and it gets proved so fast when you see the online community and see how good armys are with helping each other with different associations and charity projects we start. witnessing the amazing art armys put out after being inspired by the boy's music, and all the lyrical discussions and breakdowns we have every release is so cool. the agustd concerts proved it too, because the crowd was insane, even in songs which got released barely a week ago we had everyone singing and having fun. this is how you celebrate music and love art. and the reason for this is that bts have always been focused on the core of their art and have been genuine. and the fans have been focused on protecting them since the very start. and bts persisted the worst hate and smear campaigns throughout their career, nothing is breaking them apart. they love their team, and they love music and are talented that's all TT. this escalated into entirely something else and ik no one is gonna read so loljs just had to put this out. thank you!

Maybe just a suggestion, and you may or maynot be doing this, knowingly or not, ....
but I degrees, what I wanted to say is that there are many many reasons why lots of BTS fans love them but do not listen to kpop in general. Because like you have come to realize BTS is definitely kpop to a certain extent, but they have also broken past that genre a long while ago. So my advice when checking some of these other artists is to remember to actively not compare them to BTS. Don't even try and relate them, it will probably help you get a better opinion of the artist you are currently checking out. Just a recommendation. Hope it helps!

(alongside JoseOchoaTV, xCeleste, WhatchaGot2Say and Michael Beveraggi)
Seriously it is like clockwork, everytime a channel discovers BTS and genuinely enjoys their art, the channel gets spammed with random K-pop groups to react to next.
Most of these channels comply because it gives them interactions and they say exactly what people want to hear and not give honest opinions. Seriously the amount of reaction channels I have seen faking their videos made me (and many ARMY) block them.
The engagement you get from K-Pop fans seems huge at first and people try to ride that wave but they don't realize that those clicks aren't from a specific fandom, most of them are from K-Pop fans who will drop you as a channel as soon as you say "something wrong" or don't react "properly".
BTS is not K-Pop. ARMY are not a K-pop fandom.
Dont get me wrong I listen to some K-Pop acts or certain songs sometimes and I think its really cool if you find someone else from Korea like BTS you genuinely enjoy - but the focus here is GENUINELY!
