You don't have to be gay to appreciate a story that features LGBT characters, after all gay people can appreciate the heterosexual romance that's in nearly almost every piece of media.
That is true, I really enjoyed watching Your Name as well as Weathering with You and Suzume. I can empathize with the characters but still it feels like I couldn’t relate to them as much as I did to Sasaki and Miyano
There are some great stories who either happen to have gay relationships OR are specifically elevated to greatness because of their gay characters/storylines. As a straight man, I've never had a problem with reading gay media except for the same problems I have with any media: repetitive, cliche`, unoriginal, bad art.
This whole show (and manga) is a love letter and satire to BL and BL tropes. The bubble floaty effects, kabedon, all of it. It's all part of the culture and media and it's poking fun of it while also showing it in it's most wholesome non-toxic form.

I was deadass like that for years but as the queer girl version. I would get genuinely disappointed when I couldn't find any sapphic web comics/manga, yet I was inhaling that copium and insisting I was straight.
Bro deadass it starts with consuming media then you feel gay feelings then watch gay media then are gay HAHAHA we do a whole rollercoaster of discovering ourselves lmao
this is like the most normal and healthy BL plot that actually could happen in real life someday. no manipulative no sexual harassment no overdramatic attitude and hardly looking for attention just simply boy meets boy and having emotional bonding for being boys.
The amount of mainstream BL that is full of very toxic and weird behaviors or straight up sexual assault is horrible- Sasaki to Miyano wasn't anything crazy but it was such a breath of fresh air 😭
Funfact, this kind of BL stems mostly from Japans own queer history. In the past, there was sorta a "phase" that males go through, a specific hairstyle that they had meant that they weren't a boy, but yet not a man. This allowed them to be mentored by an older man and sometimes this relationship turned sexual. It doesn't even matter what age they where, as long as they had this hairstyle, they could sleep around with men as much as they wanted the usual age was our todays teenager age, but they could go on and life there life without ever having to become a man. Aka it was one of the rare times im history, where gay people could sleep around no problem lmao. Also these people where seen as beautyful and later down the line, when this tradition stopped, bi-shounen (pretty boys) started to exist. Hope i remembered everything right, i'm gonna look it up later probably.
The point of the anime wasn’t their love story (as beautiful as it was) It was actually them FINALLY getting each other’s phone numbers even after being friends for like a year
@@YeetusTheFetus nah there's no right or wrong, im a bi who grew up on bl cause i didnt know english till later in life. Gotta say most of the bl especially pre given in anime especially is VERY toxic. Seriously became a hardcore fudanshi only bec i was looking anywhere for actuall good BL that doesn't make me want to punch (usually) the tops
Being gay, I'm glad that the complaint about the show is actually that it's a slow burn and takes the whole show for them to get together. LOL That's the whole point, though. Especially as a teenager, confusion regarding sexuality is real, which is more of the subject matter here, not so much their relationship itself. (even though they do get together) Having wholesome shows like this is all I could ever ask for, and the fact that the general public's reaction is "UGH KISS ALREADY" vs "EW THEY'RE GAY" shows how much we've come.
@@xxyzxxyz690 i mean pretty much every BL is a slow burn. it takes forever for them to get together and sometimes eventually they do in the end and sometimes they don't. i would love to see a story where the couple already *is* together at the beginning so we can get there and get past it
@@jamesliggins891there’s a chinese bl novel called Mr. Dior that’s about these two guys who are already married from the beginning and it’s pretty cool (it also has the prettiest manhua adaptation on bilibili) ☺️
It's actually really surreal, like, are you sure they end up together? But they do like.. it isn't queerbait, it isn't a joke... this is all I needed and wanted as a child. I'm 31 & reliving my childhood basically, but gayer
Sasaki's dub va is bi, Hirano's is gay, Kuresawa's is a trans woman, Miyano's is nonbinary, and Tashiro's is gay. It and given have an entirely queer main voice cast
I went the opposite direction, I'm a lesbian now 😭 but in retrospect, MLM seems more popular than WLW so I believe I was seeking more rep (in the 2000s) until webcomics became a thing.
Miyano’s very stupid case of denial reminds me of 13 year old me sleeping soundly after staring for two hours at pictures of hot anime girls, binge watching a yuri (lesbian) anime, and fantasizing about how epic it would be if my best friend and I were both gay so we could date each other- thinking to myself “I’m just a really great ally!”. Took me a few more months to consider the possibility that I might be a little bit gay.
oof that hit way close to home 💀 not 8 y-o me getting butterflies from watching xena the warrior princess lmao. or a 12 y-o me playing these way too saucy dating sim games on newgrounds that were intended for het men and where you had to seduce girls. one of the most embarrassing moments was my mom finding out I'd been playing big-tiddie anime girl games, well sorry mom, I'm lesbian and had to see some boobs lol. (she was just upset at the overly sexy content tho, she's not a homophobe although did still think I was straight for some reason haha). I mean so did I, even at 14 ravenously consuming all gay content and feeling weirdly affected by it, thinking 'wow I'm such and empathetic ally' lmao. still at 18 being like 'maybe I'm asexual' because dating a woman just didn't feel realistic in a homophobic country and that was a way to repress my sexuality, stay closeted and mask the pain. at 21 I fell desperately at first sight for this girl at uni, she flirted with me, led me on but turned out to be depressingly straight of course, classic. I've had very little luck in the romance department, mostly barely bi women hitting on me and then leading me on, randomly ghosting, and then going for fr the ugliest men I've seen. so very little hope but this drop-dead-gorgeous woman I've been friends with for a while just started dropping hints she might be in love with me, so fingers crossed for me I guess haha
@@olufson not you describing my love life with the bi women leading you on only for them to end up going for the ugly dude (and they always look the exact same). like, what's up with that being so common? 💀

I always find it funny that in my family I’m the single most homo of the sexual, but am still being relied upon for the continuation of the bloodline lol. It sucks that most lesbians I’ve been interested don’t want crotch goblins like i do. Including my current partner .-.
As a gay person myself, this is the first time I've managed to watch a BL show without cringing as much as I usually do. I love that they tried to make this feel as realistic as possible, and not just the stereotypical route of most BL animes. Though there still were some tropes here and there, it's SO much better than most other "gay anime".
Agreed. I feel like anime studios should make more shouen ai animes than yaoi animes, bc shouen ai genre focus MAINLY on the relationship aspect of bl than the sexual aspect. Plus there’s plenty of good wholesome stories in shouen ai than yaoi.
I'm gay and I watch a LOT of BL and yeah, most is kinda cringe but that's usually because they are written by straight women rather than gay men so its not as realistic because no lived experience and whatnot. Although in my personal experience, gay people don't really consume any gay media whether it's BL, yaoi or gay romance, but women do so that's their target market most of the time so its understandable. Men just aren't into romance most of the time I guess lol, none of my gay friends like it but I do.
@@rjjacob101 you need read mangas instead of watching the animes (bc a lot of anime bl plot is shit. Like I still don’t get how people like super lovers). Anime producers need to animate more shouen ai mangas (like sasaki to miyano and given) instead of doing yaoi (although there SMALL amount of yaoi that is consensual and wholesome but it’s not like anime producers will adapt those😒).
@@yenahbrown4675 Isn't super lovers and shotacon? I avoid that stuff like the plague. I don't get it either, shota seems p to the edoy. I prefer a little more intimacy in my romances, but I absolutely LOVE Given even though its really asexual. I don't care for wholesome (I prefer more adult themed) BUT I like non-toxic and consensual because some of that stuff can be pretty r*pey and I don't like how that is romanticized by some. I do read manga on occasion and I've found a couple I like. There was this BL manga I read about jazz music or something and I really liked it even though I couldn't care less about jazz haha! From what I remember is wasn't super smutty either (although i'm okay with that as long as it isn't non-con or over-the-top. I think BL has a few non-toxic stories out there but yeah its true that many of them repeat the same boring, tired or sometimes problematic tropes that make my eyes roll haha!
@@rjjacob101 oh my god 🙄the constant r@pe troupes and the repeated phrases like”your hole won’t let go of my c*ck” or “your body say otherwise “ or the other bullshit is so freaking annoying . Finally someone talked about the girlfriend- as someone who's only seen funny dub compilations of this show, I can confirm that she's weird. Plus she thinks that "delinquent ukes" are a good trope for the completely wrong reasons. smh Edit: ok ok so let me clarify. This comment was basically completely a joke- theres no wrong way to like something, and my "smh" was totally sarcastic. Sorry if I offended anyone or if people thought i was rlly being serious about this topic. Its none of my business to govern what u like, (and i didnt think this was that big of a deal in the first place lol) so yeah
@@Blanch590 uhhh well the whole "yankee" thing is pretty unfamiliar to me, but the gf basically said that the trope was good bc the bottom would get dominated (💀) by someone stronger than him... yet i like the trope cuz even though the delinquent was stronger that the other person just from fighting and stuff, their personalities were balanced enough that strength or "power" didnt determine how they acted with each other. Sorry if this didnt make much sense lol, i didnt expect many people to not-agree with the gf in the first place 😅
I just want to mention that it's not that the rest of BL isn't healthy, it's just that the more complicated/problematic stories get a lot more attention. BL is a huge genre that has manga/anime tip toes into different genres as well, including horror, thriller, seinen (adult oriented), psychological etc. But there are so many series out there that are fluffy and wholesome, it's just that many people often expect a certain type of story for BL when it's actually a very diverse genre.
true there are LOADS of fluffy, wholesome, purely romantic or emotional BLs out there, they just never get animated for some reason. you have to search up Shounen ai (NOT YAOI) for the manga/manhwa/manhuas. imho though novels (danmei mostly) are definitely peak when it comes to plot of all genres
Seeing this video made me realize that I still had the tab open for this anime which I had been planning to watch but never got to. I paused the video and literally binged the whole thing then came back to watch the rest of the video lmao Also, Hanzawa gives me ace vibes rather than gay.
This video is such a banger, i LOVE when “unqualified” people give commentary on different anime genres, mostly because there’s no bias and they call out weird shit for what it is
The rewatchability of this video is crazy. I adore every meme, every scream, every line and the editing and script overall. Incredible. Brings joy to my heart every time.
As a gay myself I think you did a pretty good job with the video You may not be "qualified" to talk about it in depth but you are more informed now then you were before. Its nice to see a straight? Person talk about a gay show without it getting homophobic
A lot of anime are like that with internal monologues because it used to save money on animation! With an internal monologue, you don't have to animate lip flaps, but can still keep the audience engaged while pumping out a new episode per week!
I’m pretty sure Hanzawa is fond of Miyano because miyano reminds him of his little brother; holding out hope that his younger brother will have a relationship like Sasaki and miyano’s
As a trans person, I can really relate to the main character (black haired guy). I always denied that I was trans masculine even though I was dressing up to look like a man, just like the main character with his BL. In the end, I accepted myself as transgender and he accepted himself as gay
Honestly same. Being a trans-masc mlm is a trip. Really went through all the stages of, "oh if I like bl content and I'm a girl I guess I'm a fujoshi" to "people are telling me it's morally wrong to sexualize mlm relationships as a girl so I'm going to not question the fact that I want to be apart of an mlm relationship and simply bury myself in shame thinking I'm a horrible person for wanting that to begin with!" To finally, "I'm a man now, time for gay shit."
Yeah not a lotnof proper queer Bl out there it is a good one in my opinion.and not fetishizing on gays like other forms. It's very much sensible in a good way
I really like this series - both the anime and manga - mostly because I can really see myself in both Sasaki and Miyano. I'm a lesbian, but I think this anime is one of the few I've found that really captured my own experience of figuring out my sexuality and how I felt when I first fell for a girl. It's discussion on sexuality is so rich and it also is just a really comforting series and I genuinely really like it. Plus - can confirm watching BL as a guy like Miyano and then saying "but NO I'm not gay I liked a girl once in middle school" is extremely gay as a lesbian who would watch shitty GLs and other forms of media with solely women but then go "oh but like yk not in a GAY way I've liked men for sure definitely". Turned out I just didn't understand romantic affection in my case, plus having a crush on one gender doesn't mean you can't have a crush on the other. Anyway I love this series 10/10 fr
I feel this so much! I am also a lesbian who read this manga and watched a ton of bl and gl when I was younger but swore I once “liked” a guy in like 3rd grade so I totally wasn’t gay.
Mine was bring comphet for so long wondering why I always wanted women no matter what man I dated. And being livid with being seen as so feminine. I just... Miyano is me, full stop lmao. He's entirely too relatable.
ngl, i like to see hanzawa as aromantic and/or asexual tho that could be me projecting when he said "why does everything have to be about romance" or smthn like that to his brother
i'm ace and arospec and that's my absolute favourite hc. that's my go to question any time i interact with any anime stan (yk the ones i'm talking about... the shippers who can't chill)
i’m also aroace and tbh i thought Hanazawa had a platonic crush on Miyano cuz i agree with him. it’s hard to explain to others who aren’t aro/ace that there are other types of attraction or affection towards others that isn’t romantic. btw if you guys want a platonic relationship series i have one that i really love ^_^ it’s called “I Want To Be a Wall” and it’s about an asexual woman (who’s obsessed with bl) and a gay man (who has a one sided crush on his straight childhood friend) and they’re in an arranged marriage but their relationship is so sweet and platonic because even though they’ll never fall in love with each other romantic, they grow to love each other platonically :)
I've don't watch much BL anime because all the tropes end up being the same and were all "shy boy with gigantic ass eyes that looks a (suspiciously) lot like a girl" x "tall handsome masculine guy that keeps sexually harassing him but it's just never ever regarded as anything other than flirting" so seeing that this show tried staying away from that is kind of a breath of fresh air
The most chad behavior from any straight dude is doing what you like and even if people accuse you of being gay for doing do, just responding "So what?" or "Why do you care?" and continuing to do it anyway simply because you enjoy it.
The part where u were watching them about to kiss and they don't and u go... "the credits better not roll here" and then it goes to credits it so FUVKING relatable 🤣🤣🤣
As a asexual person who's pretty picky about the romance stuff I watch I really enjoyed watching this anime. Seeing this video in my recommendations was a good excuse for me to watch it. I'd heard about it, but didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. I love that there was consent across the board, no creepy age gaps, or overly sexualised teenagers, and that the characters weren't ever forced or coerced or had their feelings explained for them. They got the chance to define that between themselves with patience and time and were completely accepted by circles. I never enjoyed a slow burn this much, it was the cutest and most satisfying shit I've seen since Given. I'd love to see some more LGBTQ+ anime or manga like it, if there's anymore out there (I've only really seen this and Given so I wouldn't know any others).
I'm ace as well. Finding wholesome BL is a rare treat. There are a few historical Chinese anime that are more adventure/martial arts focussed with gay main characters that I thoroughly enjoyed... they sort of like LGBTQ Lord of the Rings... if you're into that kind of stuff. Heaven Official Blessing is my fav as it has the most healthy relationship depiction. Brace yourself for slow burn tho
i’m aroace and i’m not too picky about romance recommendations. i LOVE romance. though i avoid any toxic series which does make it very hard to find a sweet wholesome BL or GL or any queer series because it’s usually heavily sexualized. BTW IF ANYONE WANTS AN ASEXUAL (i think also Aromantic) MC SERIES I HAVE A RECOMMENDATION!! it’s called I Want To Be A Wall and it’s supposed to be an asexual woman and gay man having a platonic relationship in an arranged marriage ^_^ it’s so wholesome and i love how sweet their relationship is :)
There are many reasons why this is top tier BL anime. My reason for this being so good is that it WON’T WORK if it’s NOT BL. A lot of BL plots are basically the ‘gay version’ of straight tropes. Another reason why I think this is one of the best ones out there is the Non-homophobia in both protagonists. Some BL like to make gender the focal reason why two characters are in conflict and they focus on the self struggle and internalized homophobia. They even make it a point to compare m/m and m/f relationships. Which leads to toxic ‘love triangles’ where one character tries to make the other person develop feelings of jealousy and neglect. The ‘oh you won’t be my lover then I guess you can’t be my friend’ plot. TLDR; reasons why sasaki and miyano is top tier; 1. Only works if its BL 2. No homophobia arc 3. No love triangle 4. Explicitly states BL relationship and no queerbaiting 5. WHOLESOME
27:36 this whole commentary made me laugh so hard because that’s literally my reaction when these types of scenes be it gay or straight come up. This whole video was hilarious 💀

Well, I wasn’t expecting this video will be 33 minutes long but I JUST LOVE MIANO AND SASAKI, LIKE 12 EPISODES IS DEFINITELY NOT ENOUGH ⁄(⁄ ⁄ ⁄ω⁄ ⁄ ⁄)⁄
I think if you know the genre someone likes, there is absolutely an anime out there they will enjoy. It'll be the kind of story that could be told in any medium and still be good, it just happens that the medium is anime. I like sci-fi the most and there are a lot of solid SF animes that are not tropy (the story could literally be told by any medium), like Parasyte. I use this as a gauge for the anime I like. I am fan of anime that is also not a fan of anime, in that sense. I enjoy a good story told by any medium, and I do enjoy Japanese culture, but with anime I am very picky and don't like almost any of the most mainstream titles. I found izakais to be super annoying - there is only one I like and it's the most mainstream of the anime's I enjoy (Slime datta ken) and I generally don't do romance or slice of life at all (i like this BL romance plot, but I'd only watch it if there was a dark fantasy/supernatural story alongside the romance, i can't help by find a romance on its own to be boring). I think people who aren't into anime often just need to stop seeing anime as a genre and see it instead as a medium for storytelling that houses a broad spectrum of genres.
Help. I thought this was a jerma compilation. I really really did. i kept skipping ahead waiting for the bit to end and the jerma clips to start. i give up
Bro you should definitely do given. The songs are so good and overall it’s amazing. The development and characters is realistic and they mentions so many topics and how each character learns to deal with it. 10/10
I feel that hanzawa thinks of relationships as his obligation. He feels as though that its his responsibility to have a family, children, and then die like that. Not to mention that, that responsibility was put unto him when he was still quite young (he felt pressured when his mother asked him if he likes boys too) which gave him complicated feelings w/ what "romantic relationships" should be. If you have experiences like that it can be very annoying when someone assumes (even jokingly) that you like someone romantically or that your relationship w/ another (that you see as platonic) is romantic. Its kind of stressful yk? Since having a romantic relationship feels like an responsibility to you, jokes like that feel more personal than it should. - sincerely, an aro who is (also) tired asf w/ ppl assuming your relationships are romantic

I really recommend you watch Doukyuusei then!! It's very wholesome too. Although it's a movie. But it has a manga and many sequels which are equally good if not better than the movie!
Do you only watch anime? If you would like to watch more BL, I suggest the live adaptation of Semantic Error. It's adapted from a manhwa (Korean), and from the comments I read it's quite spicy, but the live adaptation is not really (some peppers only 😂) and I liked it! The two actors chemistry is top notch, and it's quite short too (less than an hour), perfect for a quick binge watch.

I love softhearted, warm and fuzzy BL so much T_T

Turned out I just didn't understand romantic affection in my case, plus having a crush on one gender doesn't mean you can't have a crush on the other.

i'm ace and arospec and that's my absolute favourite hc. that's my go to question any time i interact with any anime stan (yk the ones i'm talking about... the shippers who can't chill)
i’m also aroace and tbh i thought Hanazawa had a platonic crush on Miyano cuz i agree with him. it’s hard to explain to others who aren’t aro/ace that there are other types of attraction or affection towards others that isn’t romantic. btw if you guys want a platonic relationship series i have one that i really love ^_^ it’s called “I Want To Be a Wall” and it’s about an asexual woman (who’s obsessed with bl) and a gay man (who has a one sided crush on his straight childhood friend) and they’re in an arranged marriage but their relationship is so sweet and platonic because even though they’ll never fall in love with each other romantic, they grow to love each other platonically :)
THE OP IS SO GOOD I NEVER SKIPPED IT ONCE also the fact that this story completely forgets about bisexuality is incredibly funny to me

A lot of BL anime and manga seem to forget bi ppl exist tbh
@@jartism A lot of real people forget they exist.. And deny that they exist.. and shun them even when they do know they exist x/

WHOLESOME

This show and Komi Can't Communicate really are the "anime for people who dont like anime"
such a universal appeal in both shows
I think if you know the genre someone likes, there is absolutely an anime out there they will enjoy.

I read him as aro tbh!! I wish it was genuinely expanded on that but I get that Japan is getting there slower.
10:15 damn near killed me...
the reaction on the bottom left was everything 😂🤣💀
Same I was like 😲
😂😂😂
I just got to that part as I saw your comment lmao AYOOOOOOOOOOOO 👀
Sometimes I come back to this video. Apart from being fire it cheers me up lmao
Vids hilarious man, great editing and reactions. Always sceptical of BLs but this one looks pretty decent! And the corny-er the better imo lol. Thanks for the recommendation!!
And ngl I clicked because I saw romcom anime review plus Jerma which was a breathtaking combo LMAO
The two actors chemistry is top notch, and it's quite short too (less than an hour), perfect for a quick binge watch.
when he started listing manga terms it triggered my “brother has stumbled across my fandom spaces and is now asking me to decipher the code protecting my self image” panic response and i wasn’t okay for a second
the editing in this is god-tier. The commentary as well has me dying...lmaooo
THIS WAS ACTUALLY SO FUN TO WATCH BRO ive wanted to see a guy appreciate some good bl for ages and u delivered 👌
Kellen Goff is a goddamn treasure. The particular way he voices characters with so much personality is pretty unique. I was completely shocked when I learned that he also voices overhaul from bnha.
FREDDY FAZBEQAR@?
Fuyoshi here.. this is a masterpiece from all the anime I've watched (and not only bl's), it's the first and prob the only one that has made me cry it's so FUCKING WHOLESOME😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😍😍😭😍😭😘😍😭😘😍😘😍😘😭😘😘😭😘
11:38 got me so off guard 😂
🤣😂🤣😂😂
SAME GDHDFUDC
😭😭😂😂
I think you'll like SK8, it's not very gay but it's veryyyyy homoerotic, it's fun and it seems to match the vibe you seem to gravitate towards, but overall pretty lighthearted!
He’s gonna love the English dub🤣
Excited for season 2?
@@yenahbrown4675 I am sooo pumped and hyped, can't wait to see the story continue
@@vaishnavisingh9244 bruh me too. I do hope it won’t be no more gaybait stuff next season bc I’m tired of seeing that in bromance animes, where they hint two characters yet it went to the “just friends” troupe.
Langa confession is legit, so something better happen😤
@@yenahbrown4675 I think it goes both ways, because most friendships ARE a little bit fruity, if people saw the way I act around my best friends, I'd be the bendiest of noodles but alas. BUT LANGA REKI are soulmates.
@@vaishnavisingh9244agreed
When I discovered this anime existed from getting clips reccommended, I read the entire manga, watched the anime, read the spin off (Hirano to Kagiura), and watched the movie within two days, the brainrot went HARD
Hirano to Kagiura is super good btw, I love their dynamic even more than I liked Sasaki and Miyano's and I LOVED their dynamic, both series are masterpieces
The running joke with calling Hirano sexy 😂
I'm gonna piss myself at how funny the editing is help me
The video was well articulated and I liked the slow burn of romance the show had. All the unhinged dialogues were just right to bring out a chuckle and genshin reference.
Your script writing is cool and people can learn a lot from it just make videos like these it's really fun to watch.
Have a great day 🌀
I know you said you don't really watch anime but dude. This was so funny and I'm really hoping maybe you'll do more
This is such funny BL review!!! U
SHOULD MAKE MORE NOW
