      @@jaccat4336Moomins are fictional creatures created by finno-swedish author Tove Jansson in the 40s. They featured in her - sometimes oddly philosophical children's books and a comic strips that skews towards a slightly older audience.
      The Moomins are extremely wholesome and have nothing in common with the Wretched Kanenogi, exceot for unfortunately looking quite a lot like him, which - given that the Moomins are extremely popular and Japan and their stories got two anime adaptations, probably isn't a coincidence. It's kind of weird that the only monster that has precedent to do and get away with this is the misfortune eating shrine snake god thing, since it wouldn't be surprising for it to demand some sort of spousal sacrifice in exchange for good fortune and services. Every other monster has zero precedent to get away with this since they all seem to do nothing, provide nothing, and have no leeway to get away with their childnapping. This actually would have been a very interesting story if all of the monsters were minor gods who are providing some sort of benefit to society in exchange for spouses to serve as a fictionalized social commentary on power dynamics conflicting with moral values...but the vast majority of the monsters are just walking, pointless jokes.

    I call myself a fan of horror with cute exteriors. It is my favourite thing. But I don't think I've ever seen something where they refuse so stubbornly to ever address the horror in-universe. It's surreal that even when it gets creepier, the characters still don't wise up. This ends up becoming a layer of horror in itself, and I really hope that this series goes on to inspire others. There is so much room for seriously good cute dark stories if the writer is willing to keep the protagonists unaware all the way through. I'm tired of the creepypasta approach where things go from 0-100 and rather than blend cute and horror, they just switch them. It's so lazy. And I've sadly become so used to it in my starved search for creepy cute content. I've forgiven way too many bad attempts. Seeing this show, makes it clear that we should be getting better. That there's still so much untapped potential! Thank you for sharing this with us.

      It's creative and fun, and a good reminder that our idea of normal isn't the one way everything has to be to have a mostly peaceful, happy society. If aliens ever did visit Earth in a diplomatic sense, we'd inevitably be in for a lot of culture shock. They could run society in a way that is so counter to our own ideas of what is right or wrong, but their society may thrive far more than our own with more satisfied and content citizens, less political strife, no war, etc.

      i can easily imagine an alternative version of this in which creatures are normal to pass by in regular human society, but for some reason the government is very into them coupling with humans, maybe they give some mystical good fortune or supernatural favors, so they promote a lot the concept of people accepting these marriages like here by giving housing and stuff, that way it can keep the silliness of "surprise marriage" since the adult can at first chose this for the benefits but grow to love their monster husband

    • @simonwahlen7150
      @simonwahlen7150 2 ปีที่แล้ว +214

      This weird story is based on a practice in shinto religion. A shrine maiden or shrine priestess doesn't have to marry because she is considered the bride of the kami (or god with a small g) of the shrine. While the god translation implies that kami are mega powerfull or a big deal in a society they are in effect any yokai(mirage or spirit creature) that is enshrined and worshipped. For example a kappa a turtle river spirit that drowns children can be appeased and worshipped into a kami that prevents drowning. The example in the show that vaguelly shows one of the beings behaving like a kami is the size changing snake that brings luck that seems like a snake kami depiction.
      There is certainly intresting worldbuilding and stories that can be made around the concept of children being the (potentially arrenged) brides or grooms to local kami to ensure that the kami remains content and helpfull but this story seems to really gloss over alot of details in the setting. This might be a little less weird in japanese culture since they atleast know what the beings are like if it was a western story where children where married away to fairies. It would be weird but we would atleast know what the husband was and have an idea of why society might agree to marry them away.
      So it would be helpfull if we where shown more of why it would be a boon for society to marry away people to these yokai instead of just glossing over the how and why of it like in the story.

Due to downsides of the concept of pedophiles or in this case rapists this relationship is considered bad now but could easily be misconception by modern people like our selves. For example i know some one told me that their grandmother married a 14-year old guy in the 1900's when she was 21-years old but she died at the age of 84 years old but the guy she married at the age of 14-years at that point was in his late age 60's when she died.today to many rapists exists for this relationship to be consider safe now.but that does not mean it could be feasible.brand name monopoly and governmental monopoly are the reasons why things are so expansive now yet back then a 13-14 year old could easily pay for their own house and everything that goes in the house was even cheaper back then.times have changed social wise and relationship wise.

    I think I can kind of understand. When I was a high schooler the idea idea of just any non threatening humanoid thing being really into me and us being in a relationship that was physical but not overtly sexual would be a really appealing fantasy. I think the fact they don’t really talk or act like a normal person takes away the pressure to meet normal human social standards and expectations and just be yourself exploring something that was going to feel weird the first time even if it was with a regular person. The fact that they’re soft and cuddly and kind of cute can help something that can feel kind of scary and adult feel more approachable. Idk this feels less like someone fantasizing about having a teen sold to them and more about exploring the desire for a relationship at a young age with all the scary stuff (or stuff that can be scary for someone new to relationships) like having to interact with another human body or pressure to impress someone and not be awkward or any expectation of being sexual beyond just being physical taken away which I can totally see the appeal of. I think even the fact that they’re sold into the relationship against their will actual caters to the want of not having to put yourself out there or risk rejection or communicate confidence that you want a relationship and rather be able to have a relationship while still being passive. I don’t want to tmi strangers on TH-cam but when I was really little in middle school and stuff I had a lot of fantasies, romantic and otherwise, that involved me not having a lot of choice or agency just because that stuff was kind of scary and someone ignoring that was a way of feeling secure that they definitely wanted you if that makes sense. Also the fact that it’s a unique creature kind of makes it extra special that they’re into you. Like the same way it’s kind of special in inyuyasha to have a wolf demon boy friend instead of just a regular guy. Could totally be over reading into this but every element of the show that feels weird and off (just based off this video) feels like it does server a specific purpose in appealing to a specific kind of fantasy I can imagine a lot of awkward high schoolers or others having and in that lens if feels more like a weird quirk of how we enjoy the idea of being involved romantically with others than it is creepy imo. Love the video though it’s super funny srry if my comment sounded to critical or anything that’s not my intention.

      I mean there're plenty wattapad fanfics written by like middle school girls about being sold into slavery/forcefully married to/kidnapped/etc by like one direction or edward cullen or whoever. I think it is a way for them to explore, but there's a little difference when we're talking about an anime that was written and produced by adults. Its rhetoric is legitimised by the fact that it's 'officialy' on tv and in print. This could've been a cute sort of romance-ish comforting anime that explores these sort of safe dynamics without there being childbrides that are sold by their teachers lol And there definetely are anime and manga like this, too! Also from what I can gather from this video, this story isn't entirely devoid of sexuality, either, obvi not in an overt explicit or mature way, but the mc clearly does have some feelings of this sort, which would be totally fine if it didn't seem like his spouse is an adult(?)

      The trope of the romance story where the woman is suddenly kidnapped/sold into slavery/marriage to an actually loving man is literally centuries old. Since the forced aspect removed all culpability and responsibility from them, they can't be blamed for getting into a romance with the handsome stranger after all, allowing them to enjoy it without guilt.
      No surprise if some gay boys enjoy similar fantasies, they are after all also discouraged from wanting these sorts of relationships.

I just know that your delivery was so funny I didn't fully comprehend the existence of this media until the video was already over. This was hilarious, but I'm very disturbed. Will watch more videos for hopefully as funny content.

    I came across this manga in a Japanese secondhand book store thinking it would be a cute slice of life story about a weird creature befriending your standard Japanese school boy, so I bought it and read it with the help of google translate. I gotta say, the roller coaster of emotions I experienced as I had to slowly process what was happening and the conversation I had with my friend about it was more interesting and memorable than if it was a regular old story

    This video in my mind is how it feels to go insane. I feel like this is what happened to the Hunter in Bloodborne during the course of the night.

      Yeah, like, if this started out as some Japanese lady's satirical response to serieses like The Animagus' (?) Bride where the child bride is usually female (and so she made the child bride male to have the inherent horror of it stick out to people who take girls getting married in these shows for granted), then it would honestly be kinda brilliant, but if it's meant to be taken at face value as a fun, romantic story, then there are some BIG issues
