So love Weller and I loved The Jam, but for me the very best of it all were THE STYLE COUNCIL. I even went to get my haircut in my local village at a barber's called STYLE COUNCIL!!! Saw them for the very first time in 1987 at Birmingham NEC. I've seen Weller loads since and to capture the heart, the style, the white jeans, the black rollneck, the white jean jacket, the youth, the enthusiasm etc etc takes me back in a lovely fun way. For me one of the most undertated bands in the world - thank goodness the Documentary will be upon us on 30th October, though it should be on terrestial tv really. Long Live The Style Council.
He's singing while chewing gum. 🤣😂 I like this song. I first heard it on MTV in 1984. I only recently found the video o TH-cam. I never knew the name of the group, just remembered the video, vamp and bass line and that I liked it.
Remember recording this...or rather...my friend recording this on a betamex video recorder. Still have my copy. Great live version. And perhaps the one and only time Weller captured playing bass live
As much as I like the final, fretless bass-like arrangement (a bass keyboard really) on the studio recording, this reggae/dub-influenced approach is also amazing! Thanks for sharing!
First time I've seen Weller on bass. Although it's different from the record, it's a great bassline played beautifully. You can tell he used to be a bassist. ( As opposed to just being a guitarist who plays bass).
Jee, I didn't know Weller played bass. One of my favorite things about the original recorded version of this song though is the synth bass, but Weller's reggae-style bass here is pretty cool too.
I stumbled upon this looking up something else. Not bad. I love the bass and drums. Early 80's hD some good music. I don't remember these guys at all. Pretty good. Love the clothes.
@VFA-102S Diamondbacks That makes sense too. That can be hard. actually i think doing one or the other should be sufficient! I've tried playing Harmonica guitar and singing... made a fool myself!
Well, he did start off as the bassist in The Jam until Steve Brookes left, then him and Bruce swapped instruments. Coincidentally this bass is 1 of 2 that Bruce used at the end of the Jam. They kept 1 each
Its still Paul playing bass on all the vesrions but sometimes bass synth oscilators triggered with a real bass plugged in. The bass synth sounded great IMHO as it still had the fluidity of Pauls bass playing.
@@80ssynthfan48 no idea but does sound tonally similar. Could be a mono synth too, would be possible to get close on a lot of synths. Some tasty mod wheel expressive parts and v nice delay making the overall effect
i can still remember watching that on switch back on a balmy june evening in 1983 as a 21 year old
It's the finest song I've ever heard and am so moved by the magic of it.

And me mate 1987 birmingham cost of loving tour
Love this live version. The bass line and vocals are so fluid.
Bellissima canzone lui e un grande

It's great how S.C. performed so many versions of their songs.. always reinventing and inventive. Phenomenal
I think that this has got to be one of the best versions of L.H.S with Weller on bass;-)
Agree.Awesome playing
I know Right!.. never seen modfather on bass
The original was a synth bass
@@gamingwithcallum6087 Do you know what synth bass was used? Dx7 maybe?
@@fabioantonelo5060 not sure. Seems like a moog. I’ve been looking myself

One the best groups ever. Love them.
Sometimes I forget Paul was the original bass player in The Jam.!
Oh those lonely films oh those lonely parties 👏👏👏👏don't matter what i do

Drummer Steve White was sooo young!
One of the best videos on TH-cam
Sogno per il 2021 Mick e Paul insieme.... (Style Council) ... come sarei felice!!!!
Magari, un bell'album di 13-14 pezzi.Credo che però a Weller non interessi
First time I've seen Weller on bass. Although it's different from the record, it's a great bassline played beautifully. You can tell he used to be a bassist. ( As opposed to just being a guitarist who plays bass).
By far, the best version.
Live to air...priceless recording.
Soul-ful tune sung with an edge
This is insanely good.
Paul Weller on bass... dang!!

The guy hitting two sticks together just makes the track 😂

I fancied myself as a SC fan... but i never knew he played Bass... Makes me love him more.
@VFA-102S Diamondbacks Thanks man!! Hofner eh? The Violin Bass? Nice job!
@VFA-102S Diamondbacks I should have know... in the 80's everyone used the Aria.. i think Taylor from DD used one too..
Still prefer the fatter analog synth bass meself 💪

@VFA-102S Diamondbacks The big difference between John and i is that he had Talent.... I only think i have talent.
Beautiful! ♥️🔥

LOVE⬆️❤️💥
The reggae dub soul version mick talbot and steve white laying it down..
That’s not Steve White on drums
Yes it is - who do you think it is then ?! Lol it’s an 18 year old Steve white - learn!
...i thank you@@westonsea
Much better than the studio version. I hate that cheesy bass line of the studio record, Paul's bass on this is what it should have been.

❤❤❤❤❤💕💕💕💕💕
Why didn't I go and see this band? Oh yeah, I was 21 and chasing girls instead. Dammit!
Don’t worry I’m 21 nowadays and can’t chase them because the band doesn’t exist anymore... well at least we have TH-cam to transport us
Hey, I was 19 and being chased!
The girls were at the gigs mate😜
I've played out my role- Why I've even been out walking They tell me that it helps-But I know when I'm beaten
Well.. That's a gasp of what was...
How does he sing while chewing gum? Pretty cool 😎
A 12 year old Steve White by the looks of it
OMG Steve White! What is he, 15?
18
Does anyone know who the other band were on this episode of the switch ?
Glad paul is mostly welsh ❤
Which synth is being played by the second keyboard player?
Memory Moog. Beast
@philiprafferty849 Thanks. I'm wondering if it's what's also used on the record, and generally what kind of sound that is.
@@80ssynthfan48 no idea but does sound tonally similar. Could be a mono synth too, would be possible to get close on a lot of synths. Some tasty mod wheel expressive parts and v nice delay making the overall effect
Weller is that stylish Mick Talbot looks good shame that The Style Council is a re incarnation of The Jam with bad musicians
Reincarnation of the jam what😂
bad musicians??????
christ! Some people should not comment on YT
