Great job with the turning. Fun watch. BE super careful with gloves, sleaves or anything when turning on the lathe. It is so easy for a rough spot to grab and take your hand or arm into it. I always turn with short sleaves and no gloves, rings or anything on my hands. Don't know you experience level so just wanted to mention this. I know it's a bit colder where you are so just be aware lathes can really be dangerous with loose fitting clothes and especially gloves. It only take a loose string to grab and take your fingers into it. Just a warning if you haven't used a lathe much before.

That grease gun really is such a handy tool when you own equipment! I can only imagine trying to manually pump all those fittings with a grease gun that works half the time.

Andris, your familiarity with your lathe will give you better results as shown with your finishes over each pin. You should have a feed control lever on the side of your apron which will use the lead screw yo advance the carriage longitudinally along the work piece and normally you have the cutting tool moving forward towards the chuck with the leading edge of the cutting tool doing the work. Speed, direction and sharpness of the tool will normally give you a good finish, practice makes perfect and since you like to experiment have a crack. This was an awesome video, good length, heaps of content and superb results, well done mate, great effort as always
Hi Andris - the lathe proves it's worth in this episode. Great solution to the pin fit adding the welds and then machining off. A lot of work but definitely extending the life of the machine. Well done.

The master (battery isolator) switch could have gone where the old one went. At 38:26 you can see the remains of the old switch where it went through the side of the battery box.

Hello Mr Ants! Thanks again for a great video! At 1:28:00 You mention having a welded together holesaw, You can do this without welding anything. Put on the biggest holesaw first then put on the smaller one on the remaining thread of the adapter. Note the smaller one will get a bit stuck. This way you can also use a smaller holesaw as a pilotdrill for expanding an existing hole to a bigger size. Maybe you don`t need that now that you have a cutting torch 😁
The small filter is under the other lid according to the service manual. The fuel filter housing should have a spring in the bottom pushing on the filter, preventing it from falling down.

Dude, I mean this with all the best and not trying to be safety police or anything but it's actually super dangerous, please no gloves when the lathe is running, ever! Preferably roll up your sleeves too, hoodie ropes or any other shit that can get caught and pull you into the lathe. That lathe definitely is stronger than your arm and it's very easy to get caught on something. I've been called out for it too, because you know, it makes sense to want to protect your hands when there's hot metal flying around. But some hot chips and scratches every now and then are a lot better than getting your arm ripped off so I'm glad people warned me before anything happened. There definitely have been times since then where I would've been screwed if I had been wearing gloves. Anyway, enjoyed the video as always. I was kind of hoping to see your mother's reaction to the big ass tractor but can't have everything I guess! :)
Yeah i know about this, it was very cold in the workshop so that's why i wear gloves. I need to get some heat going into the workshop. Mother was happy to see it by the way, she knew this tractor from her childhood as she was a farm worker back then, brought back some memories of her.
Hi Andris , now you have a Lathe so now you can make your own pins and bushings so you wont have to wait on other people. Yes the lathe was a nice purchased it will save you some money for sure. You can make washers on your lathe using round stock. Not too bad for the first time on the lathe. Lots to learn about which cutting tool to use for cutting. Hope you got your manual for you lathe. The 80% oil change sounds about right. Many people still think it should be changed at 3000-5000miles. It’s a hold over from 40 years ago when oils were not very good. We run our diesel service trucks to 15,000 miles. We did oil analysis on our trucks and customer’s equipment at (300hrs) to get to that point we had faith in running them that long.
Hey Andris! You may have better success cutting from tailstock into the chuck. The turning tools are designed for this and you’ll get better results. But - for a guy that’s just learning how to use a lathe, you did amazingly well!! Cheers, Bro!
@@Ants_Pants - yep. There really isn't a wrong way to cut on a lathe (for what guys like you and I are doing). I was taught to use the right hand cutting tool, put the lathe in forward and cut from the tailstock towards the chuck. It does seem to provide a better surface finish, but again - if you get the pin turned to the right diameter, then job well done! The different tools really just help you reach different areas. A right hand turning tool used as I describe works best simply because of the tool geometery. At the end of the day, bro - you do you (and it's working). Cheers!!
Good work Ants, if there is a part 2 im more than interested seeing it. The oil filter length is not that important here mostly it's the threads that have to match up. Most of these mini excavators work the snot out until they are just sold. Yours is not even the worst at all. If you go watch how much work Matt from Pacific Northwest Hillbilly channel has with his large excavator. You will see despite the size difference all of them have the same issue and that is neglect kills. Now having a Lathe makes perfect sense cause turning the pins back to the original diameter and letting someone else do it. Adds up the costs within minutes. You need a oil/fluid pump setup for the lathe to cool down the cutting blade. Also weld makes the cutting blades dull very fast.
You have to wire in the master switch on the positive side of the battery. Cause wiring it on the negative still allows current to flow through the system. So wiring it on the positive side isolates the battery from the system. That's why we call it the isolator switch in Australia.

That smaller filter is a "suction filter" and goes on the hydraulic pump pickup. That's why its only open on one side. Somewhere in the tank.
and you have to drain the fluid to do it and you have to open the access hole in the tank

Yea, agree. Same with a grinding wheel. No glove, no sleeves. I did metal fab in the US Navy and saw some bad accidents with loose clothes.

You can turn down a bushing for that last cylinder end . Reslieving is also another way to fix slope if you've not got line boring options .
i decided to leave it as is, i hardly use that cylinder. I'm suprised it has so much wear, let's be honest, nobody used that cylinder very often.

The holesaw holder does not have enough thread i belive, plasma cutter does not leave so round cut, that's why i used the hole saw

Thanks, the cutting tools i have seem very old, i may need to get some new HSS rods and make new ones
A tip for removing stuck bolts, try waking them with a big hammer first then try to remove them but a little heating will help also

The auxiliary hydraulics could become a log splitter option for the firewood business. But you have the other splitter.
i was thinking about this option yes, would be good for bigger logs that i cant lift

The 80% oil change sounds about right. Many people still think it should be changed at 3000-5000miles. It’s a hold over from 40 years ago when oils were not very good. We run our diesel service trucks to 15,000 miles. We did oil analysis on our trucks and customer’s equipment at (300hrs) to get to that point we had faith in running them that long.

Yup, a lathe and a milling machine can save you a lot of money when fixing machinery. A CNC plasma table can also help a lot.

Hey Andris! You may have better success cutting from tailstock into the chuck. The turning tools are designed for this and you’ll get better results. But - for a guy that’s just learning how to use a lathe, you did amazingly well!! Cheers, Bro!
aren't there left and right cutting tools so you could cut from any direction? depends on the tool right?
@@Ants_Pants - yep. There really isn't a wrong way to cut on a lathe (for what guys like you and I are doing). I was taught to use the right hand cutting tool, put the lathe in forward and cut from the tailstock towards the chuck. It does seem to provide a better surface finish, but again - if you get the pin turned to the right diameter, then job well done! The different tools really just help you reach different areas. A right hand turning tool used as I describe works best simply because of the tool geometery. At the end of the day, bro - you do you (and it's working). Cheers!!
Good work Ants, if there is a part 2 im more than interested seeing it. The oil filter length is not that important here mostly it's the threads that have to match up. Most of these mini excavators work the snot out until they are just sold. Yours is not even the worst at all. If you go watch how much work Matt from Pacific Northwest Hillbilly channel has with his large excavator. You will see despite the size difference all of them have the same issue and that is neglect kills. Now having a Lathe makes perfect sense cause turning the pins back to the original diameter and letting someone else do it. Adds up the costs within minutes. You need a oil/fluid pump setup for the lathe to cool down the cutting blade. Also weld makes the cutting blades dull very fast.

I think you are really onto something with the filters.. if you dont have one installed then theres nothing to get clogged up or have to replace!

You have to wire in the master switch on the positive side of the battery. Cause wiring it on the negative still allows current to flow through the system. So wiring it on the positive side isolates the battery from the system. That's why we call it the isolator switch in Australia.
