I love djungelvrål. I always find people that hate it weird. It is not that bad, the salt is not that overpowering. I get it that it can be to much for some people but it is in my opinion not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.
Most people outside of the Nordic countries have probably never tasted ammonium chloride, so I think their brains just get shocked about what they think is ordinary salt. But even here in Sweden, you either love or hate salmiak. There is no inbetween.
Marabou is absolutely the most well known chocolate in Sweden :) and also I wanna clear up that the double letters are far from unneccessary, they tell you if the vowel before is a long one or a short one. Like, brun has a long bowel and brunn has a short one :)
I'm a bit late here. As a Swede it's fun and interesting to see how people from other places perceive things from here. You should do an own test. I'll happily send you a box of treats as payment for fun moments on your channel 😊
Skum - translation foam - candies like the julnisse are a popular and separate category of candy in Sweden. It started as a failed attemt at marshmallows. So they are similar but different in texture.
Haupt's svenskjävlar does not contain more salt, only the liquorice cream that play the trick for you when eating.. feels and taste saltier than it is.
Swedish people, from my experience, tolerate sour candies more than other countries and that is probably why we like "Jungelvrål" so much. For me it tastes kinda sweet and I just want more of the salt on it. The more sour the better!
Living in cold countries you are used to salty food, so salty licorice is more common, and something we get used to at an early age. You appreciate it more the older you get. Salt was and is the best way to preserve food, and to season it.
It may have something to do with a lack of salt in our diet, we eat so much basic foods; meat and potatoes and veggies. People have preserved food globally using salt throughout history so it wouldn't explain our love for salt entirely.
Me and my brothers used to snort Djungelvrål salt as a dare when we were kids 🤣 But in all seriousness, we grew up on Djungelvrål, Kryptonite and other salty/sour things. Its basically in our blood 😂
As a Swede now living in Germany I feel so jealous that they get sent those proper licorice packs, THANKFULLY I CAN a actually get some here in Germany, a store imports it and I'm willing to bet those who buys it all to keep the store getting it are mostly Scandinavians lol
Kryptoniter is my favourite. As kids we used to buy only those at the local candy store, so often we said "the usual" to the lady behind the counter. =) Djungelvrål too.
I have always loved Licorice with strong salmiak on and real sour candies . As a kid I could eat so much of these candies that my tounge got hurted. But Im swedish so that is how it is supposed to be!
The fact that we like salt has a long historical connection, when it was not possible to grow anything in winter half the year in the Nordics, you had to store food and one of the ways to do that is to put the food in salt. From there, we have many traditional dishes with a lot of salt in them. So we get used to a lot of salt early on.
A Swedish candy I think most people would like is Tutti Frutti. It's a mix of pure joy in different flavours. There's a water melon gum as well, that'd be widely enjoyed. Don't know the name of it though (the oval, dark green one (it's a bit better than the spherical, light green (which is good in its own right). It's normally in the unpacked candy session.
Definetly love Djungelvrål and all salted liquorice. Its surely an aquired taste, but I dont really understand why its hated so much in the UK and US, but variety in tastes is something that makes life interesting. :-) Actually my experience (which is not that big, obviously) is that most other countries have much less variety when it comes to "sweets"; we have a lot of loved sour candy as well and other types of sweets, stuff that is at least a bit more aimed at adults and therefor not as sweet. Dark chocolate is very big here, with a cocoa count of between 70-85%.
Skotte does mean scotsman in swedish. On the company Marabous website it says that the bar is actually called skotsk terrier (Scottish Terrier), what this or the style of the bar has to do with Scotland I don't know. Maybe it felt exotic in the 60s?!
Love Djungelvrål and all those sort of salty licorice/salmiak stuff. How do you explain that, it's like marmite - you love it (and crave it) or you hate it... Licorice ice cream is great. We have plenty of sweets/candy. Haribo is big here too. I'm sure there are videos on more of the sweets here, there are lots of good wine gums, gumdrops and such.
Some serious swede made this pick. I haven't had a "Skotte" in several decades... And talking of Djungelvrål - nothing beats "Lakrisal", it is in the category of lead battery acid...
Djungelvrål is part of a range for kids, next to some sweet and fruity stuff, so really mainstream. Having said that, I have given it to my non Swedish partner to try, and her reaction was very similar to theirs…
Haha, lördagsgodis 😂 That brought back memories! Nowadays you eat candy whenever you feel like it. I'd say my favorite candy is "Dumle"! The double letter thing is mostly because its swedish :P Japp is also hands down better then Mars! "Skotte" i would say is the short version of Scotsman. I mean, imagine sitting at a board meeting to come up with a name for this bar. What would you choose, "Skotte" or "Scotsman"? 😄 Personally i don't like much fruit with chocolate. There is so much more they only got a handful to try. Far from the best once too.
Marabou milk chocolate is the most common chocolate bar in Sweden. It is a bit controversial today because Marabou did not honor the blockade against Russia. Fazer is the smaller rival to Marabou, which also sells a variety of chocolate bars. If you ask for "Milk chocolate" most swedes will give you a Marabou.
No sweden does not have own version of haribo, but haribo is produced in sweden, what from haribo that isn't produced in sweden gets imported to sweden anyway. Good yule!🎅🤶
Love it! You should do your own try out and review Swedish candy yourself! I love Djungelvrål and Kryptoniter but I do understand why some people don't enjoy the level of saltiness 😅
A pretty sick thing about "Lördagsgodis" is that they did an experiment between 1945 - 1955 called "Vipeholmsexperimenten" where they only let subjects (really handicapped people that couldn't manage on their own) eat candy one time a week and the other test group where force feed it daily. And the conclusion was that it was better to not eat it daily 🤷♂
They didn't try the sharpest salty liquorice. Which btw is the only candy I eat. I don't know, but perhaps it's a taste aquired from centuries of eating salted Herring
Probably really biased but I think marabou milk chocolate is the best in the world. And Djungelvrål was one of my favorite candies as a child, but no I prefer svenskjävlar, it's saltier and the licorice is nicer. Love the kryptoniter as well.

Ammonium chloride, very common in salty swedish candy. It does not taste like normal NaCl salt, but it's still very very salty.
Skum - translation foam - candies like the julnisse are a popular and separate category of candy in Sweden.
It started as a failed attemt at marshmallows. So they are similar but different in texture.
Djungelvrål is very good. But we have an adult version thats even better. called Svenskjävlar ( Swedish bastards). Its more salt and soooo GOOD :)
I love them but my stomach doesn't 😂 I can literally only take one, in two bites 😅 damn they're salty! And then the liquorice is so smooth underneath.
Haupts' Svenskjävlar is good. And for a company that was founded in 2014 they're amazing at making Licorice.
