  • Hello Gorgeous,
In this video, I react for the first time to Pentatonix performing a Daft Punk medley. In this video, I analyse Pentatonix's amazing performance, explain and demonstrate their vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great.
Once again, Pentatonix really blew my mind with their vocal ability, interpretation, arrangement and production. A capella groups like PTX, Home Free, Voiceplay and Voctave have a special place in my heart so please, please do suggest more artists in this realm for me to listen to!

Hello Gorgeous! 💜 Please do note, the little bit I said they looped, I know was done intentionally. If you watch the original video closely, you’ll notice they also looped the video too! ABSOLUTELY they could do something very, very similar live. Their vocal capabilities know no bounds, but a couple of lil’ sections were definitely spliced and looped in this version for a specific effect that they clearly wanted to be obvious by also looping the video 🧚🏼‍♀️

First off I just LOVE 💜 LOVE 💜 LOVE 💜 your videos. I really enjoy your unbridled enthusiasm and clear love of music/vocals and what it takes to produce it. I think you might really enjoy doing a reaction/analysis to the Kpop group BTS - Your Eyes Tell (my first pick out of their own songs to showcase their vocals) but The Truth Untold and House of Cards are also beautifully done. Another one they do that is just so bloody good is their cover of the Coldplay song Fix You where even their 3 rappers are singing beautifully. It is an excellent showcase of their talent. They all have their own unique voices and singing/rapping styles and the way they come together to blend them to make some really beautiful music it's amazing and I think you would enjoy it. They are all more on the slow ballad type songs but if you want something fun and upbeat I would suggest either Permission to Dance, Butter or Dynamite. Those 3 are also their English tracks as opposed to their native Korean language songs with a smattering of English thrown in. Anyway whatever you fancy I think you would enjoy listening to and breaking down their music.

Absolutely. Fans treat post-production observations as a criticism when it's got nothing to do with their talent. lol In the case of PTX, I feel that their post-production is almost always about delivering the best version of a song that people are going to consume as a digital medium, rather than hearing the live version with their own ears. People sitting there with their $600 headphones and sub-woofers. Music is produced. That's not the same as saying 'this music has been over-produced', which is where I think some people land when they misinterpret the observation as criticism.

“Why am I tearing up and it wasn’t even sad?” is what happens to me frequently when listening to them. I’m convinced it’s because what they’re doing is so exceptional and musically euphoric to the ears… that you can’t help but translate that heightened sense of being musically overwhelmed with the flowing of tears and unexpected emotion. Truly out of this world talent.

There is nothing better than great acapella. I sang in a high school acapella group and we won the state championship for it that year, it was an all male group it really helps with confidence because little tiny inperfections aren't as noticable when you're singing as a group
Pentatonix though has taken that to the farthest extreme possible whomever their producer is, is a god at it.

I've seen that one reacted to a dozen times or more, and without exception, every last reactor stopped the video a few seconds in shouting, "I wasn't ready!!" (or words of a similar nature). It was, indeed, an arrangement Grammy. In fact, this was the year the academy renamed the Grammy from Best Instrumental Arrangement to Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Capella and they did so specifically so PTX could be nominated. They won the same Grammy again the following year for Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy.
Their third Grammy was for a performance - Best Country Group or Duo for their performance of Jolene with Dolly Parton.
Others have probably said, but you should totally check out the Daft Punk Private Performance, where they sing this one off-mic a few years later.
You'd also probably like their Evolution Of series... all medleys and performed live in one take in the official videos. There's Evolution of Music, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Rihanna and Arianna Grande. The first three with Avi and last two with Matt.

    • @joshrubak9110
      @joshrubak9110 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I'm so glad I noticed this comment, as the info on their Grammy's you mention are almost word for word what I was gonna say.
PTX were so good, they forced the Grammys to acknowledge acappella (Note Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy" won for best pop vocal performance, song and album of the year. Nothing Acappella specific) And even in this Grammy hedged their bets, in case acappella was just a fad, combining it with instrument arrangements.
After winning twice in a row, like everyone knew they would, the Grammys basically said "Look we can't just keep giving you this bloody prize every year". So PTX basically said
"No worries, we'll just pop out of 'our lane' and roll with Dolly Parton for a song", and the Grammy's just had a "well played, you" kind of moment on their 3rd grammy trophy.

The more I watched it and read about how it was produced in an apartment closet and kitchen, I realized just how amazing this video is. Check out the 90s Dance Medley and you’ll see other examples of their ability to mimic effects. Auto-tune is used on one song to pay homage to the original but the rest is all them. You must see their cover of The Prayer, bring your 🧦 ❤

Edit: Sorry I couldn’t get to see you live, internet isn’t that reliable where we are at the moment!
I like their live performances of this more, I found this version a bit irritating in places, there again I do love live music even if it’s a recording. Loved your reaction and explanations as usual - first class 👍👍👍

These reactions are so much fun and this is no exception!!! Thank you, Lolli.
If you are ever feeling the urge to do another PTX reaction, I highly recommend any of their “Evolution of” videos. They are medleys, filmed live and filmed in one take. They are all mesmerizing to watch, but I find myself listening to the Michael Jackson and Rihanna versions the most often.

Can we just back up a moment and ask ... How bloody talented are you??? Numerous analysis of some very different songs, and you replicate virtually everything yourself .. from Avi's unique beat boxing in this, to Jinger's growl, and everything in between.
Great video .. been waiting for you to react to this one.
    Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦

I love the idea you have of continuing to develop analyses of a cappella music, because apart from the fact that I like it a lot (this is a bonus), they tend to have a very wide vocal range to produce different types of sounds.

Yaaas, more acapella! I'm a Home Fry, so Home Free is the one I would suggest - if you want a giggle, Butts Medley is a must. There are so many great songs - End of the road, Hillbilly Bone, Country Roads, Story of my life, Honey I'm good...I love that they have fun in their videos too. But also most recently Austin & Rob's (from HF) "try" at opera. (Try, yeah right 😆)
As for Voiceplay, thematically appropriate - This is Halloween is a cool song. Dream On, Little Mermaid medley, Headless Horseman (by Geoff), Boyband medley. :)

really enjoy your PTX reactions. there are so many great PTX vids, it's hard to pick just one that would be good to do next. Perhaps 'Imagine' would blow your mind, or something they do live. Or... as we approach Christmas, maybe 'O come all ye faithful' (very different but great take on that) or 'Mary did you know". keep up the great work.

3:35 I studied music theory for about 10 years growing up, while training on classical piano. You are the first person I've seen who called out the dynamics of the backing vocals. I learned something today. Well spotted, brava! And I agree with you, they are absolute geniuses when it comes to not only arrangement but technique and attention to detail.
