  • In this video we have a long 24 hours of travel ahead of us from Bali to the beautiful, Raja Ampat Indonesia.
The Raja Ampat Islands are an archipelago off the northwest tip of West Papua. It is a very remote area and despite already being in Indonesia, we have a VERY LONG travel day ahead of us. It is going to take around 24 hours to get there including 3 different flights, a ferry and finally a speed boat ride.
Before we leave Bali, we head to a dive shop to pick up a couple of items that we need for the next 10 days in Raja Ampat. Because of how remote this area is, supplies will be very limited once we arrive.
To be honest, our travel adventure to Raja Ampat started before today because after we booked our original flight, we got notice one of the legs had been cancelled. Luckily we worked it out without too many issues and were able to get booked on a different flight.
There really are not many flight options available to get to Raja Ampat... they all require multiple legs and conclude in Sorong which is the gateway to get to the islands.
The first leg of our journey is a short flight from Bali to Surabaya. We have a couple hour layover here before a 10PM flight to Makassar. This is where things start to get interesting because for whatever reason, we did not get a ticket printed from Makassar to our final destination of Sorong when we checked in.
We have to go out of the airport in Makassar and back in and are told we need to visit the Sriwijaya Air customer service office. We do not get any other details but assume this has something to do with our initial cancelled flight.
We sit in their office for over an hour with little to no explanation of the issue... finally they hand write on a ticket for us and send us on our way to the gate. To be honest we are a little worried and skeptical if this ticket is legitimate but it's around 1AM at this point and we are very tired so we follow an escort through security and hope that we are able to get into a lounge to rest before our next flight.
Luckily, we are able to get into the lounge! Our final flight is not until 4AM so manage to get a couple hours of sleep before our flight.
We have a 3AM alarm and grab some much needed coffee before making our way to the gate to confirm we do in fact have tickets and seats on the plane. :)
Once we land at the Sorong airport, we take a quick 15 minute taxi to the Sorong Harbor. We pay 215,000 Rupiah per person for the ferry and also at this point have to pay 700,000 Rupiah per person to enter to Raja Ampart Marine Protected Area.
There are 2 ferries that leave here each day at 9AM and 2PM. The ferry from Sorong takes about 2 hours to get to Waisai, the capital city of Raja Ampat. And FINALLY from Waisai, we get picked up by a speed boat and have about a 30 minute ride to our final destination, the Doberai Private Island Eco Resort where we are staying the next 4 days. rajaampatdoberai.com
As soon as we step off the boat, we can immediately tell it was worth all the time and effort to get here! The property has around 7 over the water bungalows. They are basic but have everything we need... complete with a private bathroom (a luxury in this area) AND the most amazing view out over the water with our own private deck!
There is limited electricity between 6PM and Midnight on the property which is common in Raja Ampat. I had been a little worried about not having AC but with our bungalow being so open and over the water, plenty of breeze is making it's way through.
We are beyond excited to be here and even though we are pretty tired from the long travel journey, we immediately hop in the water right off our deck and snorkel at the resort's house reef.
We had read Raja Ampat has some of the best marine life in the world and if this is any indicator for what's to come, we can see how this would be true!!

Can I ask what happened with the cancelled flights? Did you have to rebook with another airline or did they put you on another flight? Was there any additional charge? Thanks!
