  • Hi guys! I finally got the corn snake's tank completed. This is long overdue, but he seems to be enjoying it already, and I'm super happy with how it came out. :)
    Our Links:
    www.etsy.com/shop/ellesreptiles/
    ellesreptiles.com/
    Everything I used:
    Tank:
    40 Gallon Breeder
    Background:
    6ft banner printed at WalMart. Just make sure you use a very high quality picture.
    Spray Mod Podge:
    amzn.to/2FnBkw9
    Normal Mod Podge:
    go.magik.ly/ml/1bocu/
    (but they usually have the tiny container for like $1 in the store, and the dollar tree has them sometimes, too)
    Paint for the corners:
    just any acrylic paint from the craft section
    Lid:
    amzn.to/2U0L7la
    Lid Clips:
    go.magik.ly/ml/1bocw/
    Thermostat (this is the only reptile we use this thermostat for):
    amzn.to/2U4SbND
    I recommend this one instead, though:
    amzn.to/2E9BXKn
    Heat Pad:
    ??? no idea. I think it's the 1-5 gallon version, but you definitely need a bigger one. Here's a link to all the different sizes.
    amzn.to/2E9Chc3
    Aspen Bedding:
    amzn.to/2E8yQ5c
    Fake Plants:
    amzn.to/2DyRMbY
    + a mix of dollar tree leaves/moss balls
    Driftwood all came from local river
    Cork bark tunnel came from ReptiCon.
    Temp Gun:
    amzn.to/2WdXxXI
    Thanks for watching! :)

    Nice video. I use aspen bedding for my corn snake, then I was told by the people I got it from I shouldn't use that cause it introduces mites. I'm new to this so it made me concerned. Still using it and had no problems, and he likes to burrow in it also.

    • @aurieamoore5823
      @aurieamoore5823 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aspen doesnt inherently have mites. The problem is the place that it comes from. If you are concerned, i recommend finding a local small reptile shop that sells substrate and buy from there. The small shops usually have healthier animals and better sourced products. Their like the farmers markets of the reptile world and are 100% the only way to go.
      Alternatives can be coconut fiber, you can mix in orchid bark, or even cypress mulch. Avoid anything with any kind of sand, cedar, and pine and you should be good.

    These are just such wonderful pets. I recently, from a breeder, acquired a 3 month old corn snake with whom I absolutely fell in love with. She is just the most gentle creature I have ever had the pleasure of spending time with. A question for people who have had corn snakes as pets, I know generally it says that they live quite a bit longer in captivity than in the wild, but how long do you, seasoned pet owners, find your corn snakes to live (considering that they have good husbandry)? I want to give my new friend the best/longest life possible and I just want to know what to expect in terms of lifespan.

    • @aurieamoore5823
      @aurieamoore5823 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pros and cons of either:
      Heat lamp:
      Pros: perfect for arboreal species. It adds a nice ambient to your room, in my opinion, and some lamps can get safely hotter than uth which is nice if you have an animal with high heat requirements like some species of monitor lizards.
      Cons: they vary in effectiveness a whole bunch depending on the wattage and type of bulb you picked and it can be difficult finding out what is best suited for what animal.
      They can dry out the air of an enclosure pretty effectively so not best for humid reptiles
      It is frustratingly easy to break bulbs in lamps sitting ontop of an enclosure the struggle is real.
      Not a lot of reptiles are used to receiving heat from above, the temps can change depending on how high up in the enclosure the reptile is, which can be a problem if you have a terrestrial snake that has dreams of being arboreal like i do because they can venture upward and the light can get too hot and reptiles will actually hurt themselves by overexposing to higher temps.
      Heat pads (UTH)
      Pros: perfect for terrestrial species. Heat pads are hard to break if you have them regulated properly with a thermostat.
      They dont range a whole ton in wattage and usually the general rule of thumb is if it fits 1/3 or 1/4 of the tank, reaches the temps you need, and isn't damaged or warped, you're probably ok.
      Heat pads don't heat the air of the enclosure, and if used on damp substrate, can help raise humidity.
      Cons: heat mats need a thermostat every time. They can overheat without one, cook your animal, and even cause a fire. Speaking of, you have to be mindful of what surface you place your heat mat on. If its on a painted desk then it could bubble the paint if it gets too hot. There are heat resistant sprays and paints you can use tho to combat that issue. Uth can also be a problen for burrowing species. The glass of an enclosure can get very very hot and burn the animal if it burrows or sits directly on it. So its best when using it to put a barrier down. Ive found a plastic barrier made out of the cutout bottom of an old bin the most effective.
      And either option does have the potential to cause a house fire if used incorrectly so make sure to always read the directions even if u know what to do just in case anything has been updated or if there are special requirements for certain items.
      And i support the use of UVA and UVB on the majority of reptiles even if they don't need it especially lizards for vitamin absorption.

    • @aurieamoore5823
      @aurieamoore5823 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And NEVER use a heat rock. If one item in the reptile hobby could be Satan that is it.

    • @6strings735
      @6strings735 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If using a thick layer of substrate for a corn snake, then a ceramic heat emitter, heat panel or deep heat projector is a good approach. She used a heat pad which is fine because the corn snake can easily burrow down into it. Do not used lamps, those are not appropriate for most snakes as they do not heat the substrate, only the air, and they dry out the tank. A temperature controller is a necessity in any case. Also, screen tops need to be mostly covered. The most effective and simple way is to use metal foil tape to cover most of the screen. The kind of tape you can find near the heating duct section in Home Depot or Lowes or similar type store.

    • @hollywatts3143
      @hollywatts3143 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      corn snakes can live happy with under tank heating or a heat lamp. The only thing is under tank heating is easier to regulate the temperature and a heat lamp can cause burns if the heat is to hot. If your snake isn’t having any problems though the heat lamp is totally fine🙂

    I've been researching corn snakes for a while but I still need help on a tank or enclosure. I don't have a lot of money so I can only afford a tank that the snake will have to live in its entire life so I've been watching videos and I know I can do it however I don't know what an acceptable size for an adult corn snake I hear a 40 breeder works but then some say that I have to do a 4×2×2 which is like $400. I don't mind spending money but I just wanna know what yall think? The reason I ask is because the site im looking to get the enclosure from has a tank w/ snake discovery that's a 40gallom same price but it comes with a background water dishes three hides and some enrichment and the larger one is completely plain.
    Thank you for your help!!!!

      Thanks! 😁 I've never tried, but aspen does mold easily. So watering the plant might cause mold. But if water isn't going to come into contact with the aspen, it should be fine. Just make sure whatever plant your using is reptile safe 😊 Joshsfrogs.com sells a lot of plants, so I usually just find my plant on that website, and it'll state whether it's animal safe or not.

      Apothos (sorry if i butchered that spelling) is popular to use, tho snakes tend to knock over and destroy plants.

    I live at the top of Minnesota where it's long cold and dark winters. Any special info for keeping snakes up here? I don't have a special room to keep warm just for reptiles. And I keep my house no more than 72 degrees in winter. I'm originally from Florida and I HATE heat. But I'm really wanting a corn snake. Thanks.

      I hate heat too haha - pretty miserable in Alabama lately. They can do night time drops of about 72, but you can get a Ceramic Heat Emitter and a dome with a dimmer switch to bump up the ambient temp a little bit. 😊

    I’ve had a piece of wood that has just been sitting on a shelf as decoration for about… 2 years? It’s obviously dry and doesn’t have bugs but it does have remnants of barnacles. Again, it’s been sitting inside, dry for two years. Do I still need to disinfect at this point? Idk how I feel about adding bleach to something porous that my snake will come in contact with.

    people i recommend not using aspen bedding like ever for any snake because of how random those pieces are, they can have small hard chips that can easily get stuck in the snakes scales. use lignocel instead it works much better

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lignocel is extremely similar to aspen. Both substrates are unnatural and neither retain humidity (corns benefit from 60-70% humidity). A soil mix is ideal.

    • @ghosty24601
      @ghosty24601 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nightinggale6470 no corns benefit from a 40-60% and lignocel is much softer than aspen, my snake has perfectly shed everytime with a 40-60% humidity range. Do u even own a snake?

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ghosty24601 yes, I’ve had a corn snake for over five years.
      I used to think that humidity range was ideal for corns too. And yes, they’re hardy snakes that can tolerate lower humidity. But 60-70% is ideal. Corn snakes are native to states like Florida, where the humidity is high.
      Lignocel is completely unnatural and doesn’t retain humidity at all. A soil mix is much more natural.
      The website reptifiles is worth checking out, particularly the humidity and substrate sections of their corn snake care guide. Reptifiles is a source that goes solely off of factual, scientific evidence and the natural habitat of the animal.

    Do you have a new link for the heating pad as the current link no longer works?

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heat mats are not a good heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option. They produce infrared A and B like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.

    • @reptilianden7895
      @reptilianden7895 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      FrequentlySpasmodic get a heating pad and thermostat. Corn snakes only need light to regulate there day and night cycles. Make sure to put the heating mat under a hide so they have a warm place to digest there food while feeling secure.

    Can I put one in a 75 gallon fish tank or is that too large for a corn snake

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely not too large. There’s no such thing as too big, only too bare. Bigger is always better as long as there’s enough clutter and coverage. 75 gallons is actually bare minimum for an adult. The enclosure must be at least as long as the snake, with a good amount of width and climbing height. They’re very active snakes. A 4x2x2’ enclosure or bigger is ideal.

      I agree with what CBell said. The only reason you'd need any kind of light is so that they can determine day/night cycle. But as long as they're in a room with a window, or the room itself has a light, you don't need one😊

    Is it okay to setup a corn snake habitat like a month before I get it?

    • @ellesreptiles
      @ellesreptiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! It's good to set it up early, so you can make sure all the temps and humidity and everything is where it needs to be before putting the snake in. That also gives you time to make sure you're happy with how everything looks. Then when you get him, you can put him in and leave him alone to settle in for a bit - much less stressful for him that way. 😊
