Culver's needs to keep doing what they're doing. I've lived in the midwest my whole life, and they have a niche that is fit just for them. Don't try to be McDonalds or Burger King or anyone else, just keep doing what they're doing. Mmmm... butter burgers.

That's going to doom them. Young people want healthy,v fresh food. There's an increase in vegetarian and vegan food with young people. In 10 years everyone should disinvest in places like Culver's.

@@MilwaukeeWoman I'm an old man and am sad to say that all of my "health nut" friends are now dead. Genetics and luck are what keep you healthy and alive unless you grossly overdo everything (smoking, eating, etc). Those who go to extremes to eat only "healthy" food seem in the end to be as bad off as those who grossly overeat unhealthy food. Ask the people you know who are actually over 80 about their lifestyles and you might find a more moderate answer to a long healthy life. Best wishes and I wish you a long life with moderation and the happiness that comes with it.

Yeah, bothered me that he did not say Suak City or that the Culver's there is a newer building over the original one. There is a stone monument noting that it is the original location July 18, 1984 and new building opened April 27, 2000. I think the second one as in Baraboo, but that information is long gone when they used to have store numbers in order of opening if I recall. I think I first had Culver's at the Baraboo location in the mid-80s and later when it came to Waukesha I went there all the time. Moved to Texas in 1998 and they opened on in 1999 so I am lucky to have them still.

Red is popular among fast food restaurants as it's an 'active' color, it encourages patrons to eat more quickly and go, it doesn't fit their model to have diners sitting around chatting after they finish their meal. Culver's blue tends to be more relaxed and inviting as a result.

One thing you might have overlooked - the staff. It's not just that they hire polite friendly people, but their restaurants (at least here in Minnesota) are always fully staffed up, especially during busy shifts. Walk into a McDonalds or Burger King and you might have half a dozen people working at best, and they're all rushing and harried. Culvers has 20+ people on duty and everything runs smoother. Sure you have to wait for your food, but there's always someone at every register, there's plenty of people in the kitchen to make it and there are plenty of people to bring it out to your table right after it's done. I literally spend more time standing in line and waiting at McD's or BK for my food than at a Culvers.
Why is this, what are they doing differently? Their food is more expensive, but only by a few dollars over what you'd pay for premium menu items at other chain restaurants. Is it just a focus on spending more time and resources on labor, or is there some other formula they're using that other restaurants could emulate if they chose to, but for some reason don't?

I worked at Culvers for 2 years while in college, and oh boy let me tell you they were beyond successful in sales. Our location was so damn busy that alot of days I didn't get a break/it was a late break because of how rare down time actually was.
The custard is really good stuff and always fresh, they actually clean their kitchen and custard machines every night which is mandatory, the burgers aren't frozen and are actually hand pressed and flipped instead of a machine doing it for you, and they got so much staff that wait times are usually real short.
Plus they do a good job keeping quiet from the media. You don't ever hear any negative press towards them or any corporate managers making some stupid remarks or something.

We were successful purchasing the custard from the same manufacturer as Culver's, with a slight change to the recipe. As would be our demise, a local video store went out of business and killed our foot traffic. We closed our store after 3 years of operation and 3 years later, Culver's opened their first store in the state of Georgia. Great store, great culture, the best ingredients. Eat there!!!

I get what you mean, and I don't disagree, but the two chains really do have different philosophies. Culver's is actively trying to grow and expand to become a truly national chain. They have locations from Wisconsin to Arizona to the Carolinas to Florida. In-N-Out is trying to stay regional, and barely expanded from the West Coast. Their Texas locations are as far as they want to go.
Plus, Culver's has a way more expansive menu, while In-N-Out only has a few menu items (by design).

Hi, im from sauk city where craig opened the first culvers. When they first opened, the menu was a mile long. Much more of a diner than a fast food restaurant. Like for instance their dinner section was much much larger. There was pot roast, salsberry steak, fried chicken, meatloaf. There were taco salads in the eadible shell bowl, hot dogs, corn dogs, just lots of things.
About the blue he bought all the plates silverware and cups from sysco also the food. Sysco is a restuarant supply in baraboo a town 15min from sauk city. The blue and white is sysco colors of their stuff. For years their cups had sysco on them before he got the culvers embossed ones.
Also in begining craigs dad george would cook his mom would take the orders, make the frozen custard, and take food to tables. Craig would bounce between the two stations. I dont recall a failed franchise/expansion. As much as i remember the second and third locations were baraboo and spring green. There was a cafe type place that didnt work out called blue spoon cafe. There was one in middleton that closed after a year or so, but there was one in prairie du sac that lasted about 10 years or more. Just closed during pandemic. Fun fact the recipe # thing they use on advertising is just the order stock number used by sysco foods. I can answer questions if you want to know anything. I was 9 years old when first culvers opened so i have a fairly good memory of it. I lived a few blocks away from it and still do. The thing i like best is the cod dinner with onion rings and cheese curds and a turtle sundae. I used to get strawberry shortcake sundae but they got rid of that. Carmel cashew sundae is good too. Along with the pork loin sandwich, i like it with barbeque sauce, fried onions and pickels. Chicken caesar salad is good also. Plus the flavor of day get the four pints for $10 special. And choose 4 different flavors from the freezer. They keep them for the last couple weeks flavor of day in the freezer. They used to do a frozen custard cake that they also kept in the freezers but i think they stopped making the cakes. Them are my recommendations

We make our burgers pretty similarly to SnS, but the difference is in training of our grill masters.
The REAL problem with SnS burgers is that they're overcooked to death, giving them that crispy edge. Same thing can happen to our burgers, but we have better training overall and better retention of our team members so we have an easier time making sure that doesn't happen.
I've had a couple of absolutely wonderful burgers from SnS. A couple. Both by managers. And they were only so good because they weren't terribly overcooked.

@@booognish Should be about a quarter inch thick like ours if pressed correctly.
Possibly with the "grease" thing. Its mostly meat juices though, not grease. At Culver's, we drain our burgers for a second or two before putting them on the bun. Not too much though since that juice is where the flavor is at. If the burger is dry, its overcooked. When a Butterburger is cooked right, it'll be juicy and flavorful. Same is true for Steakburgers from Steak 'n Shake, from my experience.

in eating-spots, food keeps changing, chefs also rotate,
this is opposed to current restaurants,
thanks to this rotation of food and chefs, eating-spots are more powerful than restaurants
along with that, there is an app,

I grew up in Chicago and had never heard of Culver's until 1999, when I went to college in Wisconsin; Culver's was the best restaurant in the small town of Beloit, and the prices were reasonable for a college budget, so I went there regularly (as did my classmates). 10 years later, I was living in suburban Chicago when a Culver's opened up nearby. I figured the quality would have dropped with expansion, but it actually was just as good as I remembered. And word of mouth spread like wildfire; within a year it was the go-to place for a quick, tasty burger. So yeah, I think you pretty much nailed the reasons for their success.

That’s the fault of your location! All Culver’s are supposed to cook products in different vats of oil (ie: fries and curds in vat one, onion rings and pretzel bites in two, chicken and pork in three, fish and shrimp in four). If you put fries or chicken into the same vat as the fish or onion rings it will soak up their taste. Try writing a review on the online survey, saying that the fries taste fishy. If they hear that from enough reviews, they’ll probably follow procedure more closely. Source: former employee.

Despite having lived in Culver's homestate for most of my 20 years I've probably eaten at one less than a dozen times. Each of those few times has been positive though. Food is good, custard is good, etc. The sheer amount of blue definitely helps them stick out from the abundance of fast food who uses tons of red and honestly draws my eye to them more often since red just feels bright and blinding. And "their flavor of the day" is very interesting, whenever I wind up passing by one I always make an effort to read it (I'm most often a passenger so it's easier to catch what they all are) and whenever I do pass by one I always remember the few times I've been there and how positive they were and want to go again. Though I never really do. Overall it's a very good place that always feels familiar when I see it on long road trips.
