Hi Jess I am a veterinarian in an under-developed part of Brazil where most people do not have access to vets, have no money if they do have access to vets, or do not have cars to take them to town where a vet might be available. I realize that you are adding this "do not diagnose or treat your cat at home" caveat you should also realize that this is the world wide web, and if you want to help all cats your videos should be more inclusive to those in other areas. Anyway, I liked this video and am attaching it to an article I am writing on Pethelpful on how people can take care of their senior cats even when no vet is around. (By the way, even in the US only about 52% of cat owners even go to the vet.)

I have a 5 1/2 yr old cat with congenital abnormal kidneys. We found out when he was about 7 or 8 months old. I had been feeding him Merrick canned food. Vet I was seeing at the time wanted to put him on ‘prescription’ dry food. I would never give dry food to any cat but esp not a kidney kitten. I mentioned raw food and the response was ‘never!’ I decided raw was the best route to go. His numbers have held pretty steady over the past five years. I’ve used Food Fur Life premix with boneless meat and Phos Bind to keep his phosphorous at a low level. I feed him beef (Chuck), lamb, pork rotating each meal. So far, good! I recently had to change his premix to Alnutrin due to food intolerances he developed about a year ago, chicken liver being a food that was causing issues. FFL is made with chicken liver. I use freeze dried raw turkey liver and grind it up and add to the Alnutrin instead. Just passing some info along in case it helps someone.

Hi i don't know who may need this, but iv spent eight yrs with rescue kidney cats n still learning..biggest cause of liver n kidney problems arise from chemicals used at home on floor, dishes, clothes anything, first step i did when i lost few of my babies rescued was stop all chem,no painting, fumes are deadly toxic fr them,no polish varnish, red oxide, absolutely no air freshener, mosquito repellent, sprays at all..they stabilize with just eliminating all chemicals completely..cats by nature were wild n in fresh air,the Indoor Air we create is worst thru toxins..cooking their food in organic ware helps, use natural home made cleaners with Citrus peels ,vinegar n baking soda.keep fresh fountain running water sound all d time,it helps no idea why, stress is directly related to kidneys, fear triggers kidneys..spiritually we heal the root cause to trigger..trying to see if I find accupuncture, accupressure experts fr L 5..slippery elm bark seems to work ,just asked her what she thinks,I'm trying everything possible..anyone has anything to help let me know ur secrets

I just make my raw food:
    2lbs chicken thigh meat
    1 egg yoke
    1/8 tsp fish oil
    1 tbsp egg shell power
    Mix together
    Serve mixed thigh meat with:
    1 Chicken heart
    1/2 tsp chicken liver
    Per serving.
I'll drizzle a little Virgin olive oil and cranberry powder for extra support.
I let my cats chew on the thigh bones to eat the marrow, blood and cartilage too. I also give them the chicken fat for a little extra cholesterol too.

Thank you for this! We have ferrets and immediately switched to all raw diet & eliminated all the crazy supplements and treats their previous owners had, major improvements in weight, health, liveliness, fur smell & feces! Our 17 y.o. cat is now having lethargy, drinking a ton, peeing on the bed & overall seems less lively. She has always gotten normal dry food. She is also slightly congested, but overall seems fine other than maybe old age & bad diet? Senior vet check came back almost 100% clear, with "very minimal elevation on 1 kidney test" so vet diagnosed early stage CKD. Seriously? no idea on the rest of the stuff. I actually assumed this 1st but can't figure out the congestion so, but I am not spending $$$ on BS special diet food. I am absolutely going the raw diet route, thank you Jess!

Jess, I believe in what you promote for the younger cat, but now having 4 cats, mom and her 2 daughters and son with CKD and comparing their diets and disease progression first hand, I see that my homemade diet using a premix that uses eggshell instead made for a faster progression of the disease for the two that ate it versus the one that only wanted prescription dry or the one that wanted prescription wet mixed with other varieties of wet on the market that were considered lower phosphorus from Tanya’s site until later stages when the diet needed to change to even less phosphorus which meant strictly prescription. Just wanted to give my firsthand experience in case anyone else out there is looking to extend the time they have with their beloveds.

It makes me happy to see so many cat owners concerned about their cats and kidney disease. My cat has been hospitalized, and I have been distraught. They haven't come back with kidney failure, but it is likely kidney disease. Sounds like I will need to switch to a more natural diet for her (she is my profile pic here). I did hear Jackson Galaxy (who i love) said he suggests nature meats as well as incorporating moisture because cats need that with kidney disease. My cat, before hospitalized, was craving wet food. I am wondering, the premixes, do you know if I have to add the meat into them? I am trying to figure out the best way to ease her in, once she comes home, IF she comes home (kidney failure is likely).

This is for Jess because I have two cats that are CKD one is super skinny and the other one is 12 lb 10 lb overweight and he is picky pants he won't eat anything except for what he wants and he'll have nothing to do with the kidney wet he will eat some of the dry and the vet that I saw two weeks ago said oh try is fine just give him tons and tons more fluids it's like well no. So I need to know what you think I could try him on cuz he's doing pretty good he was perfectly normal nothing wrong with them and then last year creatinine 12 and they did the emergency fluids which the veterinarian screwed up so it hardly went down but he has been doing so good all year thanks to God and then he kind of crashed again a couple weeks ago but now he's doing good again but this Kitty is my lifeline so I need more help.
