- According to Egyptian Coptic traditions, with the coming of St. Mark to Alexandria in 65 AD, the first Coptic Church was established in Egypt.
At the end of the third century AD, Christians were persecuted by Emperor Diocletian. One of the most prominent manifestations of this era is the spread of asceticism among Egyptian Christians, which resulted in the establishment of monasticism and the construction of numerous monasteries and churches throughout Egypt.
Some of these ancient monasteries and churches, dating back to the 4th century, are some of the oldest still-standing Christian monasteries and churches in the world.

Non pensavo ci fossero così tante chiese in Egitto ( tutte bellissime) ...da noi, tutti ricordano la chiesa di Zeitoun, dove per 2-3 anni la Beata Vergine Maria è apparsa ad una moltitudine di persone di ogni religione.
In verità, sebbene molte chiese siano state distrutte o trasformate in moschee ovunque in Egitto, ci sono ancora centinaia di chiese in quasi ogni luogo dell'Egitto.
