Just hijacking to say I highly recommend the Jury Duty show if you want a recent take on the semi-reality prank show, it is no where near as mean as this is, quite wholesome actually.
I had a really good friend that was on this show and worked out it was all fake (along with a few other), they kicked them off and had to refilm the whole thing with a bunch of simpletons!
Will you do a video on Survivor? Many countries have done their own version (like Big Brother) and the first UK series made Zoe Lyons (comedian) famous. Also, will you do a video on Castaway (which gave Ben Fogle his TV career). I also echo other commenters recommending a video on Gamesmaster and Krypton Factor. Keep up the good work.
I honestly thought I’d imagined this show. Back when TV treated the general public who wanted to be on telly with absolute contempt. Cruel and hilarious.
We really need a return to those times. Love Island but you cut the power and leave them there alone. Hidden weapon stashes. Explosive chastity belts. A loudspeaker network issuing challenges, riddles and deadlines. Then you know they’ve earned their “celebrity”
I remember the tagline - May the farce be with you. In fairness to the show, I remember Johnny saying just before they took off that while we the audience were in on the joke, it should be remembered that these people think they are strapped to a rocket and about to be blasted into space and that they should be praised for having the bottle to do it. Great video and great channel by the way

This was bizarre and fascinating, what a goofy show but their reward for taking part, getting some money and then actually being able to go to Russia, learn a bit about space properly and then experience zero G was a nice touch. And the guy who had a deep think about life, that was kinda wholesome. This whole premise for the show really makes me think of the Japanese mentality with some of their game shows in the past, they enjoyed humiliating each other for entertainment and was all taken in good faith over there. Can't believe this was nearly 20 years ago. I learnt from this show that the city of Minsk was named after a space monkey. Educational and entertaining. 😉
I remember this. I also remember the Great Reality TV Swindle about a bunch of people who 'successfully' auditioned for a Reality TV show that didn't exist.
What I'm reminded of is "Derren Browns: Hero at 30,000ft" where the pay-off at the end was possibly what this show was aiming for: an Earth shattering realisation that what you have experienced isn't true reality.
This is my favourite show of all time. As an adolescent I learnt form it just how uninterested and ignorant normal decent people can be in science and technology.
The episodes are on TH-cam somewhere,Ii think it's episode 3 that has the still-life drawing class where a couple of them crack up laughing, which always makes me laugh. That and the 'Argentinian President' debacle as well.
Some of them definitely didn’t believe this was real. They spoke about it in the media and if you watched the series (I did) you could see they weren’t buying it. Amazing what you can get people to take part in, because calling it out would derail the whole thing. It’s like mass hysteria.

Thanks so much for the kind words, it means a lot! My original focus of the channel is looking back at some awesome nostalgic stuff from the past, but still definitely be keeping up to date with reboots and revivals as and when they come out. Hard at work on the next video now.!
I don’t know how I missed this but reckon there were quite a few reality tv shows hitting the airwaves around the same time. The efforts put in for the Russian effect space centre looked pretty amazing. There must have been a Russian person brought in to look at everything and spot anything that didn’t look authentic. Loved Johnny Vaughan back in the day and I bet he loved doing this. Those 3 participants did look pretty gutted but I bet the zero gravity flight was amazing. Unlike Capricorn 1 , at least they didn’t have to run across a graveyard to cancel their own funeral 😂 Great video ! 👏🏻
I’ll listen to this on my drive home but what a throwback. I remember eating homemade lasagne on a Tuesday or Thursday night before going air cadets. Great days
I wonder if they did another episode or something afterwards, like after they went to Russia and what not to let them have more time to process everything and what have you. Would maybe have left the show on a higher note~ Also I do like these types of videos as well, wouldn't mind seeing more in the future.
I agree, this show wasn't bad and came from a genuine original idea with entertainment intentions. I watched it at the the time and I don't think Johnny Vaughan gets enough credit for his presenting style. He came across very respectful of the contestants and the process, but all while keeping it light hearted so you were invested. It never felt mean and I feel other presenters at the time could of changed the whole feel by being too over the top or silly. In the great library of reality TV, this certainly sits proud as an original experiment in TV that, where-as not ground-breaking, certainly worthy of praise.
Remember following this at the time it was broadcast…. One of the biggest pranks on TV…. The Final reveal in studio was great and Johnny Vaughan as the perfect host.
I remember watching the show 'back in the day' and it was both incredibly cruel and hilarious at the same time. It was a one of a kind show to never be done again and there isn't many shows out there that can make that claim, totally unique
Thanks for this! My dad worked in electronical staging - ie making movable plates for things such as the cameras at Ardman animation and the wind tunnels for McLaren etc. At 6 mins on the first episode you can see him as one off the engineers, Johnny Vaughn asks to mumble! - Working on the movable stages for the spaceship :) Enjoying your channel!
I remember this. There were billboard type adverts for it in Sheffield. I watched it too, out of slightly macabre interest. As somebody interested in space and astronomy I would never have fallen for it.
I rewatched this series just recently and it was surprising to recognise a number of the rejected candidates as some of them later appeared on other C4 reality shows such as Big Brother.
I have a vague recollection of this show and remember the hype around it at the time, although I don't think I watched it much. Enjoyed your videos on Knightmare and Gladiators. I like how you've managed to capture a comprehensive review in a relatively short documentary. Would be good to see you do the same for Games World that used to come on Sky One 😉
I remember it when it was first broadcast and as I was not a fan of "Reality TV" gave it a miss, I honestly didn't think it would stick given the name "Space Cadet" as we used that saying quite often in school to refer to airheads and suchlike. There is still some speculation that it was a reverse prank and that they were all in on it and playing a joke on the public, but hey it was Channel 4 in the early 2000s so who knows ;)
There was a show in the 80s called the adventure game. It was like the crystal maze in space. I think it might be a good fit for a video on your channel.
My aunt had a plant a bit like the talking one from this show. It always scared the wotsit out of me. Also remember the vortex game with the platforms apparently floating in space that the contestants had to stand on. Great show.
I remember people seeing the guy with the curly hair on an advert with Gordon Ramsay. It made a lot of people think that the entire show was actually a hoax on the audience, and the people there were all actors - even the contestants. Not sure if this is addressed in the video as I'm only about 1/3 of the way through so far.
Like tapping in a goal from a yard out. A practical joke played on people carefully picked to ensure that they were the most gullible people in a group of gullible people.
I remember watching the first episode of this back in the day and just shaking my head at the end dumbfoubded as to who thought this was a better way to spend money instead of helping poverty and homelessness.
i was JUST telling my flatmate about this fever dream of a series. I watched it in an omnibus a few years after it first aired and it seemed so cruel to me at the end, but i still watched the whole thing LOL
Lost! a series by Windfall Films and shown on Channel 4, where contestants were dumped in the middle of nowhere around the world and raced each other to get back to Trafalgar Square(?). It really couldn't be done today, dropping people off virtually alone in Afghanistan, and was out before the larger TV show with the same name, it will always be the only Lost in my mind.
I remember watching this when it aired on tv. I thought it was fascinating, just like the derren brown zombie apocalypse prank. Its amazing what the power of suggestion can do to the feeble minded
And then in 2005 Darren Brown hosted a show called Messiah, then in 2006 heist, then a smaller series of pranks in a few seasons of a show called trick or treat. Then in 2010 one called hero at 30,000 feet and later in 2012 zombie apocalypse...I'd definitely recommend watching all of these large and smaller scale special practical jokes that had uplifting endings to not repeat the same mistake, some worked better than others but overall very good TV. All channel 4 I believe too...

@@officialbackintheday ahhhh yes please do, some of them are genuine favourites of mine, to this day I’m still baffled how ‘My New Best Friend’ never got commissioned for another series as it was so funny, however other shows like ‘Something About Miriam’ for example have dated quite poorly so would be better explored from a more sociological lens than anything else Anyway I look forward to seeing any possible future videos on this channel :)
This show is so funny to look back on. You always wonder how they believed it was real watching from the outside. (Also johnny wearing a jacket thats back in fashion in 2023 lol)
..bachlerette #5 have you seen Scream? your rockin the Rose McGowan - Tatum Riley thing~!!! Honorable mention to the other ladies I'm sure we have roles for all of you~!!!
I was fascinated with this show at the time. I remember how they put people through different tests like enclosed spaces and how susceptible they'd be to suggestion. But the part I completely laughed out loud at was the reason they told them there wouldn't be any weightlessness "because we only have a limited time to train, so we don't have time to train for weightlessness." As if having astronauts float in space was wanted and we just chose not to put artificial gravity in our space ships, lol. I will not characterise them as stupid just for that, plenty of people see sci-fi and have no interest in actual space rocketry, so they may not know it's not possible, but it did make me laugh. And as someone else noted, these people did actually have the balls to get on a rocket and fly to space, even if they didn't know it wasn't real, they were prepared to face that possible danger.
This show worked in the same way that hypnosis works. Its just very suggestible subjects being told something is real when deep down they know its not but they 'play along' because they feel like they have to. I suspect afterwards looking back they all knew it was fake all along, despite maybe feeling real at the time. I remember watching it, the whole thing was bonkers 😂
Space Cadets and Shattered were quite memorable for me. It would be interesting to see a documentary about Shattered. Can’t believe these shows were 20 years ago.
It might be interesting to do some other coverage of a strange time for Channel 4, where they made loads of reality tv shows. Possibly trying to capture the lighting in a bottle that was Big Brother in the early 2000s. There was a show called "Bedsitcom", where there was a flat made of 3 real people, and 3 actors. And they tried to improvise and curate these people's lives like they're a soap opera, sitcom... It was a bit shit.. But it existed.. They did a show in 2004 called Shattered, where the premise was sleep deprivation.. A show called The Family in 2008. Where it was just.. An ordinary family... And not much happened.. Eden was another, rather strange programme, which was as far as I know, never aired. About a group left on an island with no outside communication to tell them "this isn't a programme which will ever be aired!!"
I always thought that the final reveal was a bit lame. I'd have pretended that there was an alarm going off on one of the doors, then suddenly have it burst open, making them think they were going to get sucked out into space, only to reveal that they were in a studio all the time
@ no prob! There’s a 6 part podcast called Split Screen: Thrill Seekers that just recently come out that has interviews with a number of people involved that might be of interest too.
I remember this series. As an experiment it was great, if very corny at times, and how anyone believed it I still don't know. I couldn't help but feel that when the reveal happened they were pretty upset about it, but probably they were more annoyed with themselves for believing such ludicrous shenanigans that took place. Good to hear they eventually were given a taste of zero g.
I remember watching this. I still can't believe they actually thought it was real. They knew to get the money they had to play along so just went for it. If they did believe it explains a lot about modern society.
Got funny recollections about this one, I was watching it until apparently it got cancelled 8 weeks early due to the contestants finding out it was fake, evidently this was not the case and must of switched to one of the other channel 4 channels in use at the time, I think E4 was in use around then?
“I stand before Uranus” oh dear god. I remember this being on, I never watched it, but when I heard about the gravity generators I knew these must have been the dumbest people they could find
The fact that none of them were billionaires should have been the major giveaway. In all honesty I'd totally forgot about this show. It all seemed a bit elaborate for what was essentially an overly extended 'Beadles About' prank. And a bit of cruel one at that. I don't think Beadles subjects got 25k though, so fair dues.
On the original broadcast of the finale, the guy with the hig hair appeared in a commercial for the British Heart Foundation sparking conspiracies that the faking was faked.

Finders Keepers (the other Neil Buchanan show)
Fun House
GamesMaster
Get Your Own Back
Incredible Games
My New Best Friend
Playing it Straight
Scrapheap Challenge
Something about Miriam
Trapped!
X-Fire
Thanks for the suggestions! Will definitely add some of these to the list ;)
@@officialbackintheday ahhhh yes please do, some of them are genuine favourites of mine, to this day I’m still baffled how ‘My New Best Friend’ never got commissioned for another series as it was so funny, however other shows like ‘Something About Miriam’ for example have dated quite poorly so would be better explored from a more sociological lens than anything else
Anyway I look forward to seeing any possible future videos on this channel :)
I’ve often mentioned this show to people and hardly anyone remembers it. Great to see this.
Same here
It is one of the most memorable shows of the noughties for me. The concept was so out there, I find it hard to forget.
@@Zomerset you’d think so wouldn’t you but just goes to show how gen x passed it by lol
I'd totally believe it, like why the fuck would you think otherwise? 😂
The reveal reminds me of the much later ‘White Bear’ episode of Black Mirror.
Been watching your vids. You gotta do X-Fire
Channel 4 had form in this regard. I have a vague recollection of them calling for participants on Lapdance Island.
Recently discovered this channel, amazing documentaries!
Would you ever do Raven from CBBC?
This show worked in the same way that hypnosis works. Its just very suggestible subjects being told something is real when deep down they know its not but they 'play along' because they feel like they have to. I suspect afterwards looking back they all knew it was fake all along, despite maybe feeling real at the time. I remember watching it, the whole thing was bonkers 😂
Please make a video about Shattered from 2004!
Was just thinking about this one. too! Seems to have got forgotten!
Space Cadets and Shattered were quite memorable for me. It would be interesting to see a documentary about Shattered. Can’t believe these shows were 20 years ago.
I remember this!
When I talk about this show to people they simply don't believe me
I always thought that the final reveal was a bit lame. I'd have pretended that there was an alarm going off on one of the doors, then suddenly have it burst open, making them think they were going to get sucked out into space, only to reveal that they were in a studio all the time
I was involved in that posing as one of the contestants.
Wow, hi Steve! Thanks for commenting :)
@ no prob! There’s a 6 part podcast called Split Screen: Thrill Seekers that just recently come out that has interviews with a number of people involved that might be of interest too.
Any chance of a video about X-fire, the short lived paintball show, I believe it was cancelled due to 9/11
I wonder where they all are now.
think you nailed it. they seemed really really gutted and humiliated.... but at least they got some cool shit and cash out of it
They must have felt so stupid 😂 it was a fascinating watch tho
I remember this and the whole thing was a damp squib.
so it's basically baikonur cosmodrome in Suffolk.
The biggest thing I learned was that Deep Impact and Armageddon used the same space shuttle prop
Sure, why not? They used the same plot.
@@andrewgrant6516 It's like in one universe it failed and in one it succeeded.
You should do 'I survived a zombie apocalypse' that was great game show
I have 2 show requests for you to look into if you could:
1. The Mole (2000-01) Channel 5
2. Murder Game (2003) BBC1
I watched the mole. Loved it. Should bring it back . Glenn huggett was the banker on deal or no deal I believe.
Murder Game! I thought I had dreamt that show for ages.
Thanks
I remember watching this. I still can't believe they actually thought it was real. They knew to get the money they had to play along so just went for it. If they did believe it explains a lot about modern society.
Reminds me when CITV show dangervile
You should do a vid about Darren Brown, when he made that dude think the world was a zombie apocalypse 😂
Catchphrase or bullseye next
Got funny recollections about this one, I was watching it until apparently it got cancelled 8 weeks early due to the contestants finding out it was fake, evidently this was not the case and must of switched to one of the other channel 4 channels in use at the time, I think E4 was in use around then?
They had the other contestants in case the ruse was spotted.
