I’ve got an idea for a future video: In 2004, Channel 4 made a reality show called Shattered, in which a group of people were placed inside a ‘laboratory’ and were forced to stay completely awake for a week, The winner would go home with £100k but any sign of closed eyes for more than 10 seconds would deduct the prize total. The winner ended up going 178 hours without sleep, so you could pretty much imagine the sheer mental chaos that occurred. The whole show is pretty insane too, in fact 34 people complained about the contestants health. So if you think the treatment of contestants on reality shows nowadays is bad, then you should probably start looking at what we thought was safe and effective back in the 2000s.
One of my employees used to be a producer for one of the big reality TV production companies here in Australia... From what I can gather, a certain level of gullibility, unfounded confidence and a total lack of self awareness were the general prerequisites for good reality TV "subjects" as they were called. So yeah, in other words, being kinda thick.
I love that there are probably more “believable” ways of explaining the lack of zero gravity, even with the deep space explanation they could’ve added on “you’ll still be too close to the earth” but they decided to just go straight up distant future sci-fi
Yeah looking back, a lot of 2000s era British reality shows were incredibly meanspirited honestly. Having a whole show based on you being a dumbass who thought they were going to space is just kinda awful, so at least the whole thing was mostly just staged from the get-go.
This is the first video I saw from you, I gasped out loud when I saw the viewer count, I would’ve thought you had hundreds of thousands of subs with the quality of this video!
I remember this so well. In my opinion, it's one of the best pieces of reality TV ever made, and it could never be repeated. It happened at just the right time; space tourism was within the realm of possibility, but not common enough that people would know what such an experience really looked like. Smartphones weren't around yet, and being connected to everyone and everything all the time was not yet our reality. I think it'd be hard to cut people off from information for so long these days without arousing suspicion. And I honestly don't think broadcasters have the guts and imagination to pull off something like this again. It must have been very expensive and it all could have failed at any moment. Such a shame, I'd love to see this kind of thing. I was absolutely riveted by it. It felt a little like The Truman Show at the time.
I've got good news! There's a niche reality show on the internet called fishtank, it started out as a "hell house" kind of concept but they have been talking about doing a space themed season. The space theme they talked about was eerily similar to this, sometime over the next year we will find out if they go through with the idea
The best channel on TH-cam. Great music too! Love Brain Eno. I just have to add! I can't wait for that BoC documentary. I was so happy when I saw that on the sub.
I remember this show from when I was a kid. Even I as a kid couldn't quite believe this people were stupid enough to have actually fallen for this, that surely they figured out what was going on but went along with it not to spoil the show. Watching this back, I really don't know.
All those aspiring to create documentaries should be required to view this creators works. Very effective and speedy transfer of info with little pause. With time being more valuable than ever before I notice and apprecciate such. Nothing we don't need. 🏆
I recognise that song in the intro! Nice little easter egg (intentional or not) to that one Jam sketch. Also great seeing the use of the Mind Robber TARDIS exploding clip, thats one of the best stories in my opinion!
IIRC Ryan starred in a Give Blood advert in with Gordon Ramsey. In the advert it was implied that Ryan gave blood which directly saved Gordon Ramsey's life. Ryan got the job by just by being in the pub where advert was being shot and the director liked his hair. Think he got like a grand for advert, while his mates in the shot only got £50.
7:56 THIS IS HYSTERICAL I will forever be grateful that I was blessed to get to know this channel exists. Genuinely the best channel I’ve got on my subs, and that’s not an hyperbole I actually mean it.
"large field a stone's throw from Ipswich" Oh hey that's cool "Converted Bentwaters Park" You mean to tell me this happened right next to where I grew up and I'd never heard of this before?!
Fascinating video! I don't remember this, although it does seem like something I would have watched at the time. Definitely something Derren Brown went on to do better.

Interesting that their are a bunch of teachers when they screened for people that are easily swayed and fooled. I don't know what to pull from that, but it's interesting
Believe it or not there has been some looking into teachers being really good at explaining things and connecting with people, but not always being abstract analyst. Also they could not tell if teaching all day every day made you go a little numb or the teaching profession draws people that are less analytical. I for one believe talking to children all day every day will turn your brain to mush. 😂 we might want to treat it like an occupational hazard😊
I remember seeing the launch. I believe the actor was trying to blackmail the television company to give him more money. Almost ruined the launch by giving the game away.
I remember this show when it was new. Shocked that it could possibly have been 20 years already. I had a bit of a crush on Rainie. May have to look up if she ever did any other acting.
😅 first of all I never been on this channel before don’t know how I got here at 3:55 AM Boston time but I’m sitting here with my raccoon and my blunt asking myself. How come I never heard of this show before?🤷🏻♂️ Obviously, British TV is not big in America, but I never heard of this shit I’m gonna try to look it up to see if I can watch the whole show now what a great idea. I don’t think I would’ve been easily fooled. I’ve been on planes before and the moment you told me that an antigravity machine was developed so we won’t be floating around.🤔🤨 I would’ve called bullshit on that one😂😂😂 This still seems like a good show. I wanna watch it. Thanks for uploading this video.
I love when I find videos about the show… Anytime I ask someone if they’ve seen it they never have. I tried to explain it to them because I absolutely loved this show but they just at me like I’m crazy lol
The irony is you could do the real thing now cheaper. Maybe not the Russia part, but the rest is perfectly feasible. At $250k a seat, it would cost less to send every single person.
I don’t remember this being on for some reason but it is interesting to hear about it and see how they reacted 😊 the Mr Bimby part was really funny too
Im a professional media watcher. This is the first time, in my 50 years, I have learned about this. Oh my. In America, 'The Joe Schmoe Show' on Spike TV around the same time was very similar. Hehe
The greatest prank to ever happen, no one will ever top this. But at least all of them took it well got paid and even went to Russia for real, so it all ended on a happy note.
lol i'd be terrified to see some genuinely dissappointed at the whole experience and feel bad about them, lol i was about to watch a movie and it started with a guy telling about once he was scammed with a fake mars trip... and i remember i had your new video to watch thanks for posting, hope everything is alright
Most were just actors sadly, it came out that it was cheaper to just stage all this stuff. Same thing Mr Beast realised. There was a cross-over point though where they still had real people.
@@reubengvTV i can't tell if you're taking the piss or not. i'm just saying i can't watch it. no one should be treated the way they were. but -- i also can't watch ali g no matter how much i like sacha's humor. so, whatever, open forum. i said my piece. and this piece explaining it.
That's what a sucky education does to you! No but like seriously their ability to just ignores all the clues and just blatantly believe everything they were saying is like so surprising and funny. Also rip whoever's dog ashes there were in that jar.
If you knew you were close to your home, you'd want to go sleep at home and they'd have a hard time hiding things from them. If they believe they are in another country they will be more likely to accept the living quarters provided to them, making them easy to trick into the rest of it.
That sure look pretty crappy but if you want a show that is good where they faked it like in the guy doesn't even know it's fake how about this show called a Joe schmo that show was freaking pretty cool dude.
@reubengvTV like 6 months ago or so I binge watched a shitload of your videos. The Jam Video, the Darren Brown video, the Lord of the Flies video, after that I watched another video by Shank the globe on this same show. I think you can see where the confusion lies😂
No one even watched this. Lol! It was really boring, the only thing that was funny was the title which, at the time meant someone who didn't bathe... Not a well know phrase but kinda used in the indie kid circles.
This is my first video using Premiere Pro, so if the editing feels a bit rough that's why. Enjoy!
editing was seamless, dont worry!
Great video, subscribed
I didn't notice.

if you think about it 2005 british TV is almost like an evil version of mrbeast
So like Mr. Beast?
At least there's no stupid thumbnails.
Hold on, so actually fun and not exploitative at all?
royalroach banger before 2025
You mean a MORE evil version?
I love that they even knew that it was all a joke. At least they got paid for it
I mean, who wouldn't lose it at Mr Bimby?
Wow that actor totally saved it when the sound system failed! Crazy shit
The only requirement to go on it was you had to be UTTERLY thick
One of my employees used to be a producer for one of the big reality TV production companies here in Australia... I see what you mean. Reminds me of what Ranie said, "you could tell these people anything about space and they'll believe you."
They also said they were in 'Near-Earth orbit' the artificial gravity generator only works near earth - hence why it's not used on the ISS etc
@@shinji391it’s easier just to fake the show
I’d be so sad if I was part of this, getting told I’m dumb as hell and all of that is shown off to everyone as a joke
You'd be £25,000 pounds richer though ! (That would be like £ 40,300 in 2024)
Yeah looking back, a lot of 2000s era British reality shows were incredibly meanspirited honestly. Having a whole show based on you being a dumbass who thought they were going to space is just kinda awful, so at least the whole thing was mostly just staged from the get-go.

Me too 🤞

Thank you! Consider sharing it around online to help it reach further ❤️
38 minutes is another great video.
I am in shock that not one of these people became immediately suspicious of the lack of gravity
You must mean the presence of gravity.
Gravity is technically in space if you are not in orbit.
this is actually so insane
how could this ever be forgotten

@timmcgee8380 👀 Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye out for that!
Summed it up so well, it was such a product of it's time. Truly the best reality TV show ever.
This is the greatest prank I’ve ever seen, especially on uk tv. Why wasn’t cool stuff like this ever on?
there's also been I Wanna Marry Harry and Superstar USA
Fishtank live s3 they thought they were on a normal reality TV show on hulu lol
Love to learn about these obscure British TV gems lolololol
fantastic as always
Thank you so much Jack ❤️

Poor Mr Bimby 13:29🙏🙏
This was amazing! They totally would have believed an alien encounter 🙃
This was a work of art
I think the real hoax is that these people are all actors as well and we’re actually the ones who were duped

Rest in peace Mr. Bimby 😔
Another great video, reuben. I always get a little thrill when I see your uploads in my feed!
10 episodes. In the US, this would have been stretched out to at least 20 episodes.
fantastic vid bro haha such a wild story

250k? Try like 20-90 million for a seat on Soyuz or SpaxeX Dragon. Where did you get that number?
There was a show competing for life saving organ donations from people who were terminal.
the sequel would be going to mars on a billionaires ship...
It’s incredible that your can actually do that in real life now
I just realised half way through the video that the host is the mudman
this is a certified banger

12:57 "Erm..Mr Bimby seems like a nice dog"
Remember watching this when it first aired and being baffled at how the contestants couldn't tell it was fake. Made for great TV though!

i can't watch this, what an awful thing to do. i saw a video on it in the past few years and once was enough. till the next one heh

Fishtank live S4 lol
Well it is reality tv
Only $5,000 for wasting 3 weeks of your life? I mean it's good easy money, but it could have been better than that.
Bwah ha ha ha!!
I'd go to fake space for 25000 pounds
I can’t believe how stupid these contestants were .
hi reuben
13:04 😂😂😂😂😂😂
You mean the hoax wasn't the fact they're all actors who know it's all fake?
Nah watch the video.
mr bimby wouldve loved this video…
This sucks, what a lame speech at 15:28. At least they didn't do this to people who's dream it was to go to space.
