It's a little after my time as I would have been 25 when the show started, but I remember seeing it on the telly. Was interested in the reference to the paintbox. Around that time, there was a series that invited 6 (iirc) artists to use the paint box to make art. I definitely remember David Hockney and Howard Hodgkin using the device, possibly Maggie Hambling. IIRC the graphics for many shows of the time were created on the artbox.

Same here. Rushed home from School for Knightmare. My Mum would make me toast with paste on each slice (those little jars of Beef or Salmon paste), and I’d eat it whilst watching Knightmare. Loved this show!
We had a TV at home in our Living Room. It was a rental, had no remote control, and had to be tuned manually. At the time, Knightmare and Grange Hill slightly overlapped, and my older sister would always walk into the room and demand I change channel. An argument would ensue (we had no VCR either), and that usually meant I missed the end of Knightmare, and she missed the beginning of Grange Hill. Until that was, the day I secretly tuned all eight channels to ITV. When my sister strode into the Living Room, ready for the usual clash, I stayed on the sofa, perfectly happy. It took no time at all for her to realise what I'd done, and soon went running to tell our Mom on me. 100% worth it though, what a great show it was for a kid my age at that time to watch!
Lol - at 23:32 - that's my team as we guided him off the edge (not me, someone else). We managed to span 2 episodes, but died just at the start of our second appearance (which is shown here). How long setup was there between rooms? Did it get a bit tedious? Did all the cast switch out of character once a room had finished shooting or did they try to keep the illusion alive? I've got so many questions 😅
@@_BoojieBen Switch between rooms was around 15 to 20 minutes, I presume to setup any practical scenery and for actors to get prepped. They had a Commodore 64 in a break room, so we were playing on that between rooms. There was no interaction with any actors while they set up rooms, the ones in the dungeons just went to another room and Treguard left when we were ushered to the break room. We never saw anyone out of costume or out of character, so it kept the illusion going.
I was part of the team that beat the dungeon in series 5 (31:50). It was an amazing experience. It took a lot longer than it seemed on the TV. We would film each room and then go back to the.green room for 20 mins whilst the next room was set up. The whole thing took 4 days.

I have never in my life looked forward to a show, as much as I looked forward to Knightmare. It's still one of the best things I've ever watched. Thank you for this video.
My favorite show as a kid. Brings back great memories of walking around the house with a pan on my head taking direction from my mum. Nostalgia gets you in the feels at times.
I still think one of the best moments on Knightmare, that's often overlooked is the flubbed up dispelling of "SHROUD" where the team momentarily forgot the letter O existed, causing Tregard to intervene by groaning "Letter O!" I met a lot of the cast, Tim Child and David Rowe at the first (and only) Knightmare Convention in Norwich. Excellent retrospective, you've got yourself a sub from me!
Serious anxiety when watching Knightmare. The relief when a team escaped a close call was intense. No other TV show has ever given me that reaction on such a consistent basis. And what a brilliant documentary. Thanks for making it!
Lord of the rings Cartoon. Star wars. Knightmare. Heroquest. Space crusade. Warhammer 40k. These are some of the things that makes me the person i am today. And I'm grateful for this Adventure in life.
Lord of the Rings - book and radio play (the film then was an unfinished cartoon), Fighting Fantasy books, Lone Wolf, Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Dungeons & Dragons, and Middle-Earth Role-Playing
I remember witnessing the first team to beat the dungeon. My jaw dropped; it seemed like no one was ever going to do it. I remember asking friends at school the next day if they'd seen it, and the ones who hadn't were GUTTED!
Wow what a brilliant Documentary. I used to run home from school to watch this, back in 87 age 13 , one of may favs of my childhood. Well done, imagine if they did a VR version of Knightmare for 2024, Warning Team! nostalgia overload imminent! lol
I'm a 90's child so this was a bit earlier than my time, BUT it was rerun throughout that decade and into the 2000s from what I remember and I loved it! This is one of those shows that is etched permanently into my memory with foundness and awe at the time. This would do well I think if they relaunched it.
Impossible to state the love I have for this show and its importance in my desire for perpetual youth. Great documentary and magnificent programme. Thank you
Wow,i adored this programme as a kid. Cult classic is spot on. Absolutely everyone i knew at that time literally got home as quickly as possible to watch it. 80's tv was amazing.
I absolutely loved this show when I was a kid, especially when the evenings were drawn in and it was darker outside as that made it feel like a campfire setting. It was impossible to not be immersed in this show and get caught up in the whole vibe. I'd often finish watching it and still be in that headspace for hours after. Excellent stuff.
When Nightmare came out in 1985 I was fascinated. I was born in 1981 in China but came into the UK aged 6 in 1988/89 and started to watch on CITV after school. It's such an awesome show! I didn't understand the game at first but I managed to understand it. I had owned a ZX Spectrum and played Attic Attack and it was tricky! I'm 42 now and still loving the 80s & 90s era!
Thanks for covering this, this show was pretty much the last children's tv show I watched from my late teens, i used to set the vhs to record every episode whilst I was working. I'm now in my fifties and it still looks looks good today in 2024.
I had the good fortune of spending quite a few hours with Hugo observing the Eastbourne fire parade safely from afar in a terraced beer garden . Many drinks, many stories and an all round wonderful chap.
Thank you so much for this wonderful retrospective! I'm of the age where Knightmare was must-see TV and still enjoy watching the show today. It was an incredible programme!
Brilliant look back at one of my most fondest TV shows. You did an excellent job here mate and you deserve far more subs and views for the quality you put in. Liked and subbed, look forward to the adventure that awaits!
I loved this show, great video. Remember watching all the episodes in one sitting with a mate all night once (we'd only ever seen series 8 once), we were so tired by the end I couldn't tell if some bits were partly dreamt from fatigue or from watching the show as I didn't know enough about the last series to seperate it.
This was by far my favourite show when I was young. Thanks for showing how the show was made, I always wondered how they did it back in the day with such limitations in technology.
I was 17 when this first aired, a little older than its target demographic, but I still enjoyed it immensely. I also enjoyed watching this video, well done!
Very interesting watch, brought back lots of memories. I have a large Ron Lyons metal Knight sculpture, that I have on my desk, which I absolutely love
"You're in a room," 😂 but on a serious note, this was awesome. And probably a big reason I love RPG games so much they nailed it with Knightmare and great memories crowding around the TV in the early 90's
35 now and still watch the old episodes on TH-cam! It definitely played a part in my lifelong obsession with adventure games and all things medieval ❤ thanks for this video, that nostalgia hit hard!

This was orders of magnitude of gold. I showed it to my daughter a few years back, she was unimpressed. But what do they have for kids telly these days, youtube and tiktok? Knighmare was all sorts of creative and challenging. So so good, so original. Otherwise known as, things were better back in my day!
The only show I ever applied to go on! (didn't get on...sad times).....Propelled me into a life of table-top role playing games, LARP and later online gaming, and I'm 46 now! :)

Though I'd never really connected Knightmare to my eventually playing Dungeons and Dragons, a hobby I've now been involved in for over 25 years, watching this, while planning my next Dungeons and Dragons adventure, has now made me wonder if perhaps it was this wonderful show that first got me on the path toward one of my longest-lived hobbies.
Thank you for this video. Loved it! KNightmare when I was younger felt like such a treat to watch. And have spent time rewatching it as an adult. Though this video made smile from start to finish. Great job!
Absolutely loved this video, it was very informative and very well executed. I discovered the show purely by chance when it was in its infancy and have championed it ever since. It makes me happy that people like yourself continue to reunite it with its audience and maybe introducing it to a whole new one in the process. Its inevitable demise was sad of course but better to end on a high than outstay its welcome. Great work guys!!!
You deserve a lot more subscribers. This documentary was great. I would actually buy this if it was released on Blu Ray, as a Collector's set with Art cards and posters, etc. 👏 Also, add a selection of the best episodes, and it would be brilliant! Someone make it happen!
Each time I think of the T.V. show, Knightmare, I cannot help but mutter, “….you fvckin’ pr1ck!!” under my breath, to myself. I lived in Pinner, Northwest London in the 80’s and enjoyed the show, I had a brief spell with D&D, so it appealed on a similar level. By my late teens, I owned a couple of vintage British motorcycles and was in awe of a well spoken chap who rode amongst other things, a Vincent Rapide and Vincent Black Shadow. We always bumped into each other at Tesco’s Pinner Green and he always had time to chat British motorcycles with me. Unlike most Vincent owners, he rode all year round as his steed was thoroughly used - and he did not talk down his nose at you. We met a few times and he was always kind. He introduced himself as, Hugo….. Only realised at the age of 45 - a few years back, I had been chatting to Knightmare all these years……and never realised. When I told my wife, she could not stop laughing and threw peanuts at me. Thanks for being such a gentleman, Hugo. A true Knight who rode classic motorcycles to suit. If you are reading this, I am still riding my vintage Triumphs!
Absolutely cracking job on this documentary on one of my favourite shows ever. Feel sorry for the kids of today whod never get to experience a kids show like this.
This is my childhood right here. I remember a few years ago when the TV channel Challenge showed a huge run of Knightmare and it was glorious to revisit as an adult. I remember they showed Fun House and Finders Keepers as well. God I miss those days where Challenge didn't just air The Chase 99% of the day.
Ah Finders Keepers, I was trying to remember what that show was called. Finders Keepers, Fun House, Knightmare, Crystal Maze and the Krypton Factor those were my favourite game shows as a kid.
They did books, too! Books about how Treguard started out and his adventures, and then there was a little “choose your own adventure” part at the back. I read them all, to absolute rags. Superb show. And a great video about it boss - really great work!
I actually passed my GCSE English by writing a creative story based on Knightmare lol, Sylvester Hands was my favourite character, I feel sorry for kids now they grow up way too quickly imo.
THIS. Knightmare was THE show to watch. Great quotes, amazing backdrops and edge of your seat tension. The music and tension music really immersed you. The Pookhas were nightmare fuel and the Juggernaut. "Live in Fear".

Omg I haven't laughed this hard of long in aaaaages. Brilliant imagery!!!! 🤣
This is utterly brilliant 👏
Bless the algorithm for bringing this to me! Treguard, what a legend. I loved Pickle when I was a kid.
Love your comment… 😂
All hail the algorithm, and we thought the AI takeover was still months or even years away!? 😅
I'm 61 now and remember watching this with my kids. We were all very excited. Brings back fond memories.
I loved this show. It was the highlight of my week.
Four kids from my school went on it in 1992. They failed miserably.
That would have been series 6, come on, spill the beans, who were they? 😂
I have never in my life looked forward to a show, as much as I looked forward to Knightmare. It's still one of the best things I've ever watched.
Thank you for this video.
Glad you enjoyed the video :)
I bloody loved Knightmare when i was a kid.
Me too.
us 80s kids were spoiled with amazing tv shows.
My favorite show as a kid. Brings back great memories of walking around the house with a pan on my head taking direction from my mum. Nostalgia gets you in the feels at times.
I love this ❤
I still think one of the best moments on Knightmare, that's often overlooked is the flubbed up dispelling of "SHROUD" where the team momentarily forgot the letter O existed, causing Tregard to intervene by groaning "Letter O!"
I met a lot of the cast, Tim Child and David Rowe at the first (and only) Knightmare Convention in Norwich.
Excellent retrospective, you've got yourself a sub from me!
Thanks so much! I hope I can attend a future Knightmare Convention if one is held :)
Serious anxiety when watching Knightmare. The relief when a team escaped a close call was intense. No other TV show has ever given me that reaction on such a consistent basis.
And what a brilliant documentary. Thanks for making it!
Nothing like it when the corridor of blades came up... That room took out so many teams.
Lord of the rings Cartoon. Star wars. Knightmare. Heroquest. Space crusade. Warhammer 40k. These are some of the things that makes me the person i am today. And I'm grateful for this Adventure in life.
Same here hours of fun with friends
Mate, those are my exact ingredients too. With just an added sprinkle of Blood Bowl in there!
Same! Epic scale 2nd ed Space Marine as well.
@@SkeletonDrums1 Loved Blood Bowl, my mate had the 1st ed with cardboard players.
Lord of the Rings - book and radio play (the film then was an unfinished cartoon), Fighting Fantasy books, Lone Wolf, Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Dungeons & Dragons, and Middle-Earth Role-Playing
I know Mark. He remains a living legend for being the first to complete Knightmare. He's also a lovely guy.
I was born in 79 and absolutely loved this programme, even had a few of the books back in the day
I remember witnessing the first team to beat the dungeon.
Well done, imagine if they did a VR version of Knightmare for 2024, Warning Team! nostalgia overload imminent! lol
Glad you enjoyed :)
A VR version of Knightmare would be amazing!!
I'm a 90's child so this was a bit earlier than my time, BUT it was rerun throughout that decade and into the 2000s from what I remember and I loved it! This is one of those shows that is etched permanently into my memory with foundness and awe at the time. This would do well I think if they relaunched it.
Same here! The re-runs are what I watch too. This was probably my favourite show as a kid - we've not had anything else like it.
Impossible to state the love I have for this show and its importance in my desire for perpetual youth. Great documentary and magnificent programme. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Wow,i adored this programme as a kid. Cult classic is spot on. Absolutely everyone i knew at that time literally got home as quickly as possible to watch it. 80's tv was amazing.
This program turned me into the geek I am today …. Forever grateful 🙏
I **adored** Knightmare! This makes me want to watch it all over again! A thousand thanks for this loving retrospective ❤️
Thanks for this video. Love the show and still go back and watch it regularly. Ah.. to be a wee boy again, simpler times
I had the good fortune of spending quite a few hours with Hugo observing the Eastbourne fire parade safely from afar in a terraced beer garden . Many drinks, many stories and an all round wonderful chap.
The dragon/pension joke was genuinely good. Well played that lad.
This documentary is a work of love and dedication. Thank you for the nostalgic trip.
Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed it :)
This show totally needs to make a comeback, and soon. I bet I'd get addicted to it all over again, even now, as a grown-up!
Thank you so much for this wonderful retrospective! I'm of the age where Knightmare was must-see TV and still enjoy watching the show today. It was an incredible programme!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Man this was great. Absolutely loved it. The 80s TV shows were the best. Always wished they made shows like this again 😢
I really appreciate your depth of knowledge here.
This certainly was a classic show, with an unusually high difficulty level for children.
Brilliant look back at one of my most fondest TV shows.
You did an excellent job here mate and you deserve far more subs and views for the quality you put in.
Liked and subbed, look forward to the adventure that awaits!
Thanks for the kind words mate and for subbing to the channel. Hard at work on the next upload now!
Remember really wanting the kids to win !!! Which was pretty unusual for a kids quiz type show ,!! Excellent show , top tier, way ahead of its time
This was by far my favourite show when I was young. Thanks for showing how the show was made, I always wondered how they did it back in the day with such limitations in technology.
Thanks for watching!
Caught Knightmare in its second season and it blew me away,am now 48 and it was so iconic.
Oh my goodness this brought back a flood of memories! Well constructed video !!!!
A core memory for me, being 4 years old, getting in from school, having a bath and drying myself in front of the fire whilst watching Knightmare.
Four??
Ohh Nasty.
loved Nightmare!
Don't think I ever saw anyone complete the quest back in the day....
Amazing job, well done Sir!
Excellent documentary dude. I'm an 80s kid so this really hit me in the nostalgia feels lol
"You're in a room," 😂 but on a serious note, this was awesome. And probably a big reason I love RPG games so much they nailed it with Knightmare and great memories crowding around the TV in the early 90's
A fantastic retrospective! When i was in Norfolk several yers ago, i went to visit a few of the locations. Brilliant.
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed! I'd love to get out and visit some of the locations when I have a chance :)
@@officialbackintheday Castle Acre Priory (Dungarth) is absolutely worth a visit.
Original, creative and so much fun. I'm very grateful to those who made this show. Speaking of excitement and overwhelming gratitude, 🙁 31:44.
35 now and still watch the old episodes on TH-cam! It definitely played a part in my lifelong obsession with adventure games and all things medieval ❤ thanks for this video, that nostalgia hit hard!
I loved this series to death. Thank you so much for this documentary. This is fantastic! Thank you!
This was one of my favourite shows as a kid and I appreciate and enjoyed this retrospective. Thanks!
What a time to be alive.
One of the greatest TV shows, not just kids TV shows, of all time! I was so lucky to have been young enough to see it in my time.
Spellcasting... T H A N K Y O U
This was orders of magnitude of gold. I showed it to my daughter a few years back, she was unimpressed. But what do they have for kids telly these days, youtube and tiktok? Knighmare was all sorts of creative and challenging. So so good, so original. Otherwise known as, things were better back in my day!
I used to watch this, as a kid, but had no idea it ran until the mid 90s. I'll have to find those other seasons now. Great video.
The only show I ever applied to go on! (didn't get on...sad times).....Propelled me into a life of table-top role playing games, LARP and later online gaming, and I'm 46 now! :)
Thanks for the nostalgia, "you're in a room!" Said in a dodgy British accent was a running joke with my siblings all through childhood.
the anxiety would kick in when that lifeforce animation would start to wear away 😂
I’m sure I will hear and see this in my last few seconds of life
@tonydolton4544 Just remember to pop the bread into your knapsack and you'll be fine. 😀
This one if I die on land and the underwater countdown in Sonic the Hedgehog if I drown 😂
@@davidd9976 or the actual song from the TV show countdown, but only if you lived a boring life that goes hand in hand with tune, sort of a dull end to a dull life.
My childhood in one simple TV show, I both love this show and remember the time fondly. Thanks for the memories my dude :D
Glad you enjoyed it mate!
Awesome post mate!
This was such an amazing programme!
Thanks for this, great video. I loved watching this show so much as a kid.
fantastic look back at a true classic, thank you so much for your time and work putting this together!
Great job!
That Horn noise when a Goblin was approaching scared the shi* out of me as a kid!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
You deserve a lot more subscribers. This documentary was great. I would actually buy this if it was released on Blu Ray, as a Collector's set with Art cards and posters, etc. 👏
Also, add a selection of the best episodes, and it would be brilliant!
Someone make it happen!
Thanks so much, really glad you enjoyed it. Please share with with anyone you think might be interested :)
Always great to run across small passionate channels
Great video, hope you continue for a long time!
Each time I think of the T.V. show, Knightmare, I cannot help but mutter,
“….you fvckin’ pr1ck!!” under my breath, to myself.
Hi amazingly good video I’m getting emotional watching this as this show was such an important part of my childhood…. Thank you 🙏
On-screen life force... I knew the source of my sleepless nights had a name!!!
Knightmare Live is ridiculously good fun; it makes a regular appearance at the UK Games Expo
Came here from a group on Facebook where this was shared. Looking forward to the memories this will bring
I always remember it being on a Friday afternoon after school and it was a brilliant way to start the weekend 👍🏻
Fantastic stuff.
One of my favourite shows in the 80's.
Where did all the years go?
Hands down my favourite show of all time, thank you so much for the trip down memory lane 😍😍
I actually passed my GCSE English by writing a creative story based on Knightmare lol, Sylvester Hands was my favourite character, I feel sorry for kids now they grow up way too quickly imo.
I absolutely loved this show and was my favourite when i was a kid. Thanks for doing this video, it brings back some great memories.
Almost an hour of Knightmare content, but not a single utterance of ‘oooh, NARSTY!’
Shocking isn't it
My thoughts exactly. That quickly became Treguard's catchphrase. He was absolutely perfect for this show.
THIS. Knightmare was THE show to watch. Great quotes, amazing backdrops and edge of your seat tension. The music and tension music really immersed you. The Pookhas were nightmare fuel and the Juggernaut. "Live in Fear".
