In 2011 I made a series of videos called Animated Anarchy on Blip. Now that they've taken down my videos I decided to post them here.
Third episode takes us to a cartoon classic taken to the big screen... But does it work out?
This animation just reminded me of the Phillips CD-i games. It's a pain to watch
Well this animation is better, it looks bad but at least it doesn't look glitchy and 8-bit.
Eli Copperman Some of the animation actually looks decent and the background art is undeniably good. I can definitely see where the criticism comes from though, it seems to fall apart at the worst possible times. I mean, right at the beginning of the movie it looks like complete ass and the animation during Who Is The Boss suffers (an otherwise awesome scene), the circus escape and climax looked rushed, etc.
It's odd because the music, lighting effects, robots and background art are top notch but most of the animation looks poor or flat out terrible.

You're right it does have the hallmarks of a CD-I game, shitty voice acting and horrendous animation that'd make bad Flash cartoons and Hanna Barbera and Clutch Cargo put together look like a Studio Ghibli film. Now all we need is some clunky controls and have parts of the movie being made into internet memes, then the unholy square of stupidity would be completed!

It is sad but... I just can't help but like the Felix the Cat Movie.
In fact I kind of wish more movies kind of did as much world building as that movie did. It did feel like an adventure through some sort of magical realm.
No matter how many critiques and videos I see about how bad it is... the very same scenes I actually enjoy. I actually liked the head hunter scene and thought they were actually quite scary.

It had a memorably bizarre world. I also like "Oriana," it's a very pretty name.

I'm pretty sure their goal for this movie was to make a children's version of Heavy Metal. And despite having been shown in the early nineties it's eighties as fuck in style and aesthetic. But damn, is it weird!

I remember seeing this flick on the Disney Channel and, truth be told, it was my first exposure to Felix (other than a Nick At Nite special on lost cartoons hosted by Adam West). The music wasn't bad, I still remember the Headhunters sequence, and I thought the floating CGI Felix head was cool back then. But I still understand that it's flawed, but not perfect.

I actually knew of Felix the Cat not from the 20's cartoons, but the ones from the 40's and I thought it sucked that I saw the same 2-3 episodes because I really liked the character whenever they showed him.

The real reason why this movie sucked is because the plot makes no sense! On the positive side, it has a brutally awesome song, Who is the boss. On the negative side, the script is so messed up, that the writer wasn't even trying. Let alone the movie itself.

I discovered your channel via your cameo on Phelous's video. I remember this movie from when I was maybe six, and I was all over it. When I was little this movie was the very definition of surreal, I honestly felt like I was in another dimension. Then I grew up and watched Doug's and your reviews, and realize how hilariously awful and '80s it was.
I saw this on The Disney Channel when I was a kid. I can testify that it was as much of a "WTF" then as it is to me today.

Yes, I was very young when I saw this on the Disney Channel. This movie is very weird, it makes the Wizarding World of Harry Potter look normal.
Actually I do have t say; it was brilliant having Felix chasing after a little glowing ball of light like a cat chasing a laser light.

Felix the cat was always my favorite cartoon character ever since I was 7 years old! I never seen the Christmas one but I did see this one in 2004 and even as a child! I HATED this movie! I wasn't even a big fan of the 50s show. I did like the 20s and 30s cartoons and I REALLY enjoyed the twisted tales show!( despite how wacky it is)
This is still a masterpiece compared to Saves Christmas.
Also, for the record, I grew up with this movie. I watched it when I was sick in bed.
I also would like to say here that I was totally cheering for the "villain" of this film. Thing about it: As the very BEGGINING of the movie demonstrates, having no army is a terrible idea, as it would make it ridiculously easy for any invading force to take over your kingdon. The uncle here was nothing but a pragmatic man who wanted the best for its country: Believing that the ideals of his brother were naive, but understanding that it would be unfair that anyone should be forced to kill, even to protect itself or its nation, he decided to build a army of robots for Oriana, so Oriana would still have means of defending itself without any of its citizens being forced to fight. But, when his brother refused even THAT, he saw no option but to conquer Oriana himself before someone worst did it.
Welp... script says he is stupid antagonist without charm.

I feel like when they made this movie, Felix the Cat wasn't involved. It's like they added the IP afterwards and made quick adjustments.

Well, I was gonna guess the "Super Mario Bros." movie if he would've mentioned jumping dimensions, but it's the "faceless monster" part that kinda didn't fit.

Here, the robots are called Rave Robots. The Nostalgia Critic calls them "The robots from Doctor Who" (assuming he means Dalek casings).
Colliding these into Rave Daleks is probably both ridiculous and amazing at the same time.

Felix voice was less annoying in the 3 1930s shorts. The late 50s to 60s, Adult Felix in the anime had that Mickey Mouse impersonation voice.
I remember the mid 90s Felix Cartoon that aired on CBS Saturday mornings. I was in 2nd grade. Felix The Cat is such an underrated cartoon character now outshined by cartoon kings like Mickey Mouse & Bugs Bunny. He maybe older than the 2, but he lacks the charm compared to the other 2. I still like Felix, not this movie though.
The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat was the best voice. Both seasons 1 and 2 even though Season 2 is simply Charlie Addler doing Buster Bunny, it's still a hell of a lot better than the others, lmao.
Seriously though, season 1 Felix the Cat was by far my favorite because they give him a higher pitch voice while giving him an attitude and not having him suffer from Mickey Mouse syndrome. He feels more like Sonic SatAM and I'm perfectly cool with that.
Not trying to hate, but watching the entire thing myself with my entire family, it was actually really good. The reason why the animation was pretty bad was because it was made in 1989. Sure there were some confusing parts, but it still goes good with the plot. The reason why Felix left his bag was obvious. Throughout the entire movie he keeps forgetting to grab his bag. There’s more, but it’s kinda in the middle of the night, so I’ll let you watch the movie.
Even for 89 movie the animation is awful. I can show you so many examples of good animated movies

I hope people who like this movie realise criticism is important and should be acknowledged no matter what instead of being ignorant and maybe actually stop calling you a NC ripoff because you’re not.

So is Andrew going to bring back Animated Anarchy or is he uploading these old shows just to fill up time. Because if the later then he fired them out pretty rapidly rather than release them one week at a time, which would have been the smarter option, or released them between those plug and play reviews, which would have been the smartest option.
That and there are so many badly animated movies for him to review. I'd really like to see him tackle Raggedy Ann and Andy a Musical Adventure

I loved this when I first saw it on here. Back then, the movie was cut in parts and out of sync. This movie's so trippy. At least Felix's voice is a LOT better and cuter here than in the Christmas special. XD
MadameSomnambule David Kolin is one of my favorite voice-actors for Felix next to Walter Telly who voiced him in those 1936 Rainbow Parade shorts Sure, a lot of people find David’s voice as him horrible and cheesy, and his voice-acting could of been done ALOT better, but honestly he sounded more cuter and fitted a lot better as his voice than the other VA’s that voiced him afterwards (ESPECIALLY the 2004 “Saves Christmas” version of him, now his voice in that was just AWFUL and flat out bad, I could even say the voice-acting in that was even more awful than this movie, ), but honestly though I wish Dr. Dave (He’s actually an orthodontist that goes by the name Dr. Dave ) voiced Felix in other stuff besides this one movie. :( I’m not sure what Don Oriolo was thinking when he replaced Dr. Dave with that other horrible guy who voiced him in that horrible direct-to-video 2004 movie, but that was a bad move not getting him back to voice Felix for it. :( He would of been so much better if he came back to do his voice again for that honestly. :(
I liked this movie as a kid
Andrew, about that book near the end you were confused about. I don't know how you missed it, but it was brought up earlier in the film, when Princess Oriana is telling Felix the backstory to how her evil uncle, the Duke of Zill, came to be. Called the Book of Ultimate Power, she said that her father entrusted her to keep it safe and be sure her uncle never got ahold of it.
Isn't it obvious? Because he doesn't listen.

I remember randomly watching this movie all alone when I was 4 😂 my parents literally just turned on the TV and left to talk to our next-door neighbors (the 90’s was a weird and different time for childcare). I had no idea what I was watching, nor did I understand what the absolute fuck was going on. And I never saw it nor heard about it again… up until watching the Nostalgia Critic review of it my junior year of high school. Although up until that point, i thought this movie was either a random nightmare or a fever dream. Anyways, I’m so happy I stumbled upon another review of it after all these years.

Tbh, it could have been salvagable, if they removed all the soundmixing issues and bad jokes... but it would have never been good.
Ever since that stupid yellow bag showed up, Felix the Cat became so lame. The theatrical cartoons has always been about testing the limits of animation; making him the first cartoon star all for the best reasons.

seriously, how is it that they screwed up a movie starting a character as simple as Felix this badly? I mean Felix the Cat doesn't even have that many ground rules that prevent certain story structures. In other words, they had the chance to create a story that was both engaging and a great representation of Felix the Cat, and *THIS* was the best they could do!?
I know what you mean, but hey, at least it's not as bad as Felix Saves Christmas. But I agree with you, Felix deserves better. And it's really strange that in the film, they didn't get Felix right. As weird as that may sound, I still have a soft spot on this film though.

Another thing that's starting to emerge is just how familiar the host of this show looks, as if I met him before somewhere, probably in a mall.
Was he nice?
The story was crap. The animation was crap. The voices were crap. The music was... passable.
But even as awful as this movie is, I still remember it vividly from my childhood. Because for all its faults, it had a VERY distinct "wacky dystopia" atmosphere to it. Something I'd never seen in a cartoon at the time. Possibly inspired by Bakshi's "Wizards" or by Labyrinth, but executed very poorly.
I say my favorite Felix the cat series was The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat. It was so balls to the walls crazy
