I know this is an old video, but I just got into collecting comics so I'm pouring over as many comic reviews as I can. The first graphic novel I ever bought was The Goddamned. Freakin' loved it. I'm happy to see the same two guys have another great looking book together.
Great review! My favorite issues in this series have to be the ones where the spotlight is on the character 'Shunka'. Also good to hear these deluxe editions have matte paper. In some cases I prefer it over a glossy finish, and with 'Scalped' that's definitely the case.
born2beblue Was really happy they kept the same paper from the trades. Lends to the grittiness of the series. Shrunka is such a great character when they start fleshing him out later. Redcrowes face when he finds out about Shunka is priceless.
*SCALPED SPOILERS BELOW, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED* Yes, Shunka was a very well written character. At first he seemed like a regular goon/henchmen, but one his story arc came in, I was shocked by that scene where he grabs the guy and starts making out with him Lmao. I literally wasn't expecting it, and kinda jolted from my seat was like "holy shit!" His death scene was tragic. When he said "no more secrets... Lincoln, I lo-"" *BANG!!*. That moment really made me feel bad for him. Poor guy was angry and trapped in his own world for so long. When he he finally got the chance to confess his love to Lincoln, you could tell by the look in his eyes that he didn't care how Lincoln would react. He just didn't want to live a lie anymore. He just wanted to be free. And even though his last few moments were of him getting shot by the man he loved, you can tell that he probably has no regrets even if it ended up killing him. His confession set him free
Great review! I always wondered if I should read this. It looks and sounds very interesting. I love stories like Preacher (which I own on the Deluxe Hardcovers, so if I get this, it would look nice in my shelve next to Preacher), more mature stories whit interesting characters.
Thanks. Great Review as always. A few questions I was hoping you could help with: 1. Should I just get the 10 trade paper backs that are cheaper and available at the moment or should I wait it out and get the hard covers? Only book one is released at the moment. I guess I'm wondering whether there's any point in getting the hard covers over the tpbs? 2. Does this deluxe edition book one = volume of the tpb or does the deluxe edition have more issues? I can see from amazon that the page count is different but not sure if thats the extras in the deluxe?
The deluxe edition contains the first two trades of the series, (issues 1-11), the script for the first issue, and promotional artwork for the series done by the fantastic artist jock. I think it's a good deal for 24 bucks online. However if you don't care about those things and just want the story look around and you may find the first two volumes cheaper.
I need to read this. This in tempo seems a bit stero-typed & repulsive/insulting. I'm native american & we have a clean, peaceful reserve. Hardly anything bad ever happens & were good people. Now scalping. Way back, when they said natives are savages & said we'd scalp people, in reality, the foreigners & non natives would put bounty's on us or flat out murder us, they'd scalp us for a trophy or use it to show proof to collect their $. I can go on & on. I'm really interested in reading this book. It sounds good, interesting but I also stand by my statement so far.
The story is easily my top 10 of all time, but tbh for me graphic novels or comics are meant to be a medium that use both story and graphic as the main tool. If you don't like the graphic aspect I would think that it would hinder your experience even if you like the story, you might better off finding good novel instead. Don't force yourself, find the one that you think you might enjoy and could entertain you. Cheers.
Thx for the video and have a great day. If you get a chance check out my new comic videos and leave a comment so I know you were there. If not I understand, thx either way for the video and have a great day.
Really, this author Jason Aaron has never been to the reservation and the artist is Serbian and lives in Barcelona. How hard is it to have Native Americans tell their own stories?
Jacqueline Keeler so a Native American can't write a book about white people? Because you're saying that only native Americans can write books about native Americans, I understand that Jason may have got a few things wrong but people should be able to write about anything regardless of if they share the same heritage of the books characters.
Jacqueline Keeler 1) how many good Native American comic book writers willing to write such a story, do you think exist? 2) he can write whatever stories he wants, he doesn’t need to be one of them to write about them.
Native here, I loved this story and while mob bosses are not a thing on reservations. Poverty and drugs are a very real thing that Aaron got right. Look, you may not agree but a white man can write our stories, just as Natives can write white stories.
Thank You. I couldn't agree more, what a tragedy it would be to limit so many writers to writing stories only about people with corresponding ethnicities as yourself (the writer). what a load of crap.
I understand where she’s coming from also I would like some positive Native American stories and characters in the future. Kinda like how Black Panther is seen as a positive influence among the African American community.
One of the best comics I’ve ever read!

Have the trades but haven't gotten around to reading them... Def jumping on them ASAP after this review.....great job hardcover...as usual....
Do it!
Amazing series I just finished up the last trade last week.
Great review! I always wondered if I should read this. It looks and sounds very interesting. I love stories like Preacher (which I own on the Deluxe Hardcovers, so if I get this, it would look nice in my shelve next to Preacher), more mature stories whit interesting characters.
Nice review. Regarding the lack of special backmatter, my guess is they'll include all that stuff in the Absolute Edition.

scalped vs invisibles which one is better?
If you haven't read this series, READ IT!!!!! It is that good.
It...Dream it...Do it...
hello, although I do not like so much the graphic part , you think scalped really worth the cost to be read ?

Native American ranch? Pine Ridge is a sovereign nation.
