Part 1 of a 3 part set
PLEASE READ THIS FIRST, IMPORTANT UPDATED NOTES:
1) I can not possible cover it all, and surely missed something. Please contribute and let me know.
2) I was not there, so I can only report on the piles and piles of research that I have done.
3) When I mention them stopping touring after Altamont (Dec 69), I have to make sure now that I mention that I meant "US TOURING". They did perform one show after Altamont Dec 21, 69 in London. They still did tour in Europe after August 70 - Dec 71.
4) my apologies for calling Nellcote Nicolette....I always mis stated it this this way, and it stuck with me...oh well, you get it!
5) there are 2 stories of rape mentioned. I HAVE TO MENTION, Keith said in his book LIFE, for Anita in Jamaica jail, this did not happen and there was no bribe money. So I will say, after, as I make this update......that was mentioned by Tony Sanchez and a Tabloid Ghost writer and then copied by other writers. THIS DID NOT HAPPEN! 'F' Tony for doing this! For the story of Bill/Astrid, I have to say allegedly this occurred, but from a source also.
but will say this, why would someone say such a false statement as horrific as these are.

I LOVE your documentaries. Thank - you for this and all your others, hopefully you will keep doing this.
Thanks LC for commenting and letting me know. YW....glad you tuned in to others also. I plan on doing it more.....just the time is key!!
Hi Steve from Wales. I really enjoyed part one. I have been a Stones fan since 1964. Thanks very much. Looking forward to part two.
Appreciated Stephen....since 64...wow. There are about 5 musical time periods I would have loved to witnessed, one is that 63' time in London. That must have been so special and great to witness. I had one friend who did see them in 65' here in NJ. glad you enjoyed!! TY working on PT2 now
These documentaries are keeping me sober this weekend ironically
Anything it takes! thanks for commenting.....glad you clicked on these
I just bought the Goats Head 4LP box set after watching these videos on GHS. It wasn’t cheap but
I’m so excited.
such an underrated album, thanks for bringing its awesomeness to life. These vids are truly amazing!
they’re honestly the best commercials for the Stones, I bet you’ve actually brought them a lot of business, and I say keep it up!!. ✌️❤️
great to hear that Mike.....it is all about the turn on's.....and I feel you can find out more about other bands here. I take a lot of pride with that. I have seen GHS Deluxe maybe used for $65, considering 4 albums....and the Brussels Affair alone is worth at least $100.
I see plenty of folks have commented in buying albums due to these.....glad to see that! Working on another project...a bit different.
This has been on my 'to watch' list for ages and I'm so glad I've got round to it now. Superb work, research, Steve, as always. You deserve a wider audience. Cheers, Ian
Thank you Ian for your always sincere comments! I am blushing....ty! I just want to see docs the way I would want to see them....tell me something I do not know. I am coming to terms that 'most' of the viewers do not understand or get it.....they are stuck on as followers or just not going outside the box and staying more on the safe / commercial side. I would love for more to have watched it for RnR interest side at least. Yes,.... I am disappointed on the views.....then again, I was always the 'different' guy and I like the similar company!
@@FlipSideCT There's a good friend of mine, a filmaker and screenwriter, who has written a screenplay set around this period (more the Exile period just before), and your doc compliments what I learnt from his material. I've sent you a message via Facebook on a tech question (I didn't want to put it here).
Another outstanding documentary. Thanks! 🎉
thanks again Jillian!!!
I’ve always loved goats head and I’ve always said their “5” album run (not 4) from Beggars to Soup was them at their best. GHS suffers only from being in Exile’s shadow. But it’s it’s own piece of great work
I agree ! Beggars to Soup ! Thats it !
Yes sir
Agreed
We all agree in the comment section goats heads soup is the stones biggest failure
@@seagullfire799 @ seagull,go away and scavenge.... I don't funk with nobody's
Another great documentary about an album i didn't know much about! I was born in '76 and i'm a big fan since 1990, when 'Paint it Black' reached (for the second time) number one in The Netherlands, because of the tv show 'Tour of Duty'. 'Goats Head Soup' is one of the albums i didn't listen very often, but after seeing this documentary, i like this album a lot more!
Thanks Steve, greetings from Rotterdam, The Netherlands..
Hi Rick, so glad you got to see this doc and thanks so much for your comments. Very cool you got to go back and relisten to this album, and dig into it's greatness. If the Stones would come out now with any of these albums, it would be shear genius! Rotterdam, nice......I will be covering that with the Black and Blue doc I am making.....plenty of things went on there! cheers and thanks again! steve
Just found your channel, I am a big vinyl record collector myself, having purchased many when released. Also appreciate the docs, working through as I can. Thanks for the time I know it takes to put out this content. Cheers!
Thanks Tom, glad you did! thanks for sharing, and glad you enjoy the vinyl. appreciated you letting me know.
Amazing documentary you've done - a favorite part of the Stones career for me. Looking forward to parts 2 and 3
thanks Alan....glad you stopped by. I am sure you will dig these! P.S. I did buy Erwin's book! thanks
fantastically well constructed video...many many congratulation. Also well timed with the imminent release of this underrated album on vinyl later this month.
Hi Barrie, great to hear from you. Appreciate it that....well, I saw a few GHS reviews, and being one of my fav albums, I felt it was given injustice. I do not think folks know how to and what to appreciate in a Stones song. But, I will say everyone from 68-81. Folks bash this one, and I got fed up. The timing of the Reissue made me rush this so it can be understood better ASAP. The biggest bonus, is Brussels Affair Live.......that is even a huge driver.....many people do not understand this will be the Best Stones Live album, working on PT2.....very very time consuming. cheers
I needed you to know how excellent your videos are and how I thoroughly love going down these wonderful rabbit holes of incredible insight and interpretation you provide. Well done, well done, well done! Please keep these coming!
Thank you Bradley for your kind words to let me know. appreciated. I am glad Stones fans can enjoy these and how I present it, so we can walk away more knowledgeable and keep their legacy going. cheers!!
@@FlipSideCT absolutely! I’ve been enjoying them immensely and can only imagine how laborious your efforts have been in finding the amazing clips, photos and videos you’ve pulled together. It’s so impressive and appreciated. Keep doing your thing my friend! I’m a rock n roll photography collector and have found some amazing pieces all over the world. One of your videos actually had a photo shoot (Stephen Stills) house in Laurel Canyon. It’s my prize piece and I bought it at the Morrison Hotel gallery at the Sunset Marquis. What a trip it was to watch your video and gather some more background on that amazing photo I purchased. Thank you again!!!
@@bradleyputhoff6000 Very cool Bradley, I take so much pride in knowing I am making folks get enjoyment. I wish I could see this style with some other bands. I am trying to dig real deep for photos....providing the common ones is something I try not to do unless a good reason. cool that you collect RnR photos. You should post your collection on YT. There is a great Brit magazine called Q that shows some brilliant shots of RnR artists. Somewhere in my channel I show a few of these magazines. The Morrison Hotel Gallery is great, and I try to credit them and show their details. Glad you are enjoying the docs....it is all about the TURN ON! cheers!!
That was very enjoyable, Steve. So glad you did this. I was so glad to hear you say early on that to the Stones fans this is a great album. It truly is. Its been a long-time favourite or mine. Looking forward to parts 2 & 3.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. As "we" know, there is a formula and understanding to a Stones song. It is not just about a BEAT or a RIFF. "We" get it......it is teaching the others that is needed, as we both do! Always appreciate your input and channel!
This is the best Stones review album and concert very good documentary 10/10
BV thanks for commenting and letting me know. I surely learned plenty myself. hope you tune in to a few others.
I'm a Stones fan for life 🎉🎉. I just simply love ❤️ ❤them🎉
nice to hear, Rebecca, we know we have a family of millions! hope you enjoyed and watch the other videos. cheers
GREAT !!!! What detail and insight! It shows the depth of research you did...very cool, unlike others videos. LOL - No Wikipedia. I saw your note above about Nellcote and figured you know the name. Fantastic job and looking forward to part 2.
TY!! glad to have made it and shared. LOL, I just can not get that wrong name out of my thought. cheers
Thanks for the great review, just ordered the 3-CD/bluray deluxe set.
gerat to hear, and thanks for commenting! I am a strick vinyl guy.....but getting anything extra from the CD is a nice bonus. cheers
I just got back into the stones again with Charlie’s passing and “Goats Heat Soup” is my favorite stones album. Also love “exile”.First off thanks for making this documentary.I just watched part 1 and have not seen part 2 yet. This was the Stones at there peak.Very creative and experimental on Goats Head.
welcome back! Glad you returned and commented. YW. They were flawless for awhile, and spreading the TURN ON is my intention. But I would think all went well with Pt2......check out the other docs!! cheers
@@FlipSideCT can’t wait to watch part 2.I love the Goats Head Soup album and think it was there best. This album is so raw and different.Love the behind the scenes of making the album, etc.I have a digital remaster of Goats head on CD that I bought like 25 years ago or so.Should get the new 2020 release.Criss Cross is a great tune 🎸
Great documentary! I saw your let oye bleed documentary last week. You did and excellent job
Wow, thank you! appreciate that BC...Black and Blue is work in progress ....sorry so late with this just saw it now.
I'm really enjoying your Stones documentaries Steve!! Thanks for your great effort in producing these. Also liked your Velvets/Reed video too. It inspired me to track down a copy of Moe Tucker's "I spent a week there the other night", on CD, which I love.
so glad to hear this! thank you!! well appreciated! It takes so much time do make them, but this is the pay off. That Mo album is very unique and well musically, of course the singing style takes some time to grasp. nice album! I really like the album before that" Life in Exile After Abdication. She brings back the VU style. still working on PT3....cheers steve
I think this is my very favorite Stones album, with Sticky Fingers being a close 2nd. I remember swapping an old (at that time) Roberto 'Bob' Clemente baseball card for a pink 8 track tape of GHS back in 1973, (I was in 6th grade!) and I've never regretted making the trade. Despite all the crazy stuff happening 'behind the scenes' at this time, Mick J, Mick T and the rest of the boys managed to put together one of their finest collections of songs ever. The blistering lead guitar playing on 100 Years Ago, Heart Breaker, Silver Train and of course, Winter is just out of this world. Coming Down Again is indeed Keith's finest moment for vocals, and features a fantastic bass line by Taylor. Both Bill and Keith are absent on a handful of these numbers, but there's nothing missed. (Check out the bass line on Silver Train!)
I have to say the story about Bill and Astrid shocked me, as I'd never heard mention of that. It was after reading your notes that I realized it 'may or may not' be true. Thanks for clarifying this. I thought some of your song reviews were a bit tepid on Part 2, and were maybe a bit dismissive of some of these tracks (Heart Breaker could've been left off?) but hey, that's what it's all about- expressing our opinions, thoughts and feelings about the music so many of us grew up on. Thanks for all the long hours of hard work you put into this wonderful GHS series, as well as all the others. For Stones fans like us, we really appreciate those small details, and love going over the tracks, hearing them again for the first time. Peace....
well said Joe, thank you for sharing and letting me know your comments. I really liked the Clemente story of your swap...what a bargain! . As my wife just bought me a book that shows every Topps card from the 50's to 79', and was just reviewing Clemente's today, as I remember it well. Yes, everyone has there own thoughts and feel. I happen to dig everything (98%) they gave us 68-82. I hear each song like it is the first time, and like you a fan. So thanks for being there, and enjoying these. working on B&B Pt 2 now. cheers
Thanks Steve. Brought back great memories. My first Stones concert was the night of the bust in July ‘72 at the old Garden. And I love the Goats box. I tip my hat to you, gold rings on ya.
Thanks Jack....appreciated your comments and input. Wow 72', their peak and best. I can not even dream about it. Box set is great. check out the other vids. cheers
For decades I have thought to myself, Mick Taylor is crazy for quitting the Stones. What's his problem ? But being on the outside looking in, And only knowing such a tiny amount of how their day to day was, I could not figure out why. But thanks to this video I now understand. This video more than the other three that I watched, Showcased how their inner circle (which seemed to be growing larger) lived in the eye of the hurricane. Then at almost regular intervals got sucked into the hurricanes cross winds of arrests, Drug busts, short intervals in jail, Almost semi constant home invasions by the police. And getting drug habits and kicking them also at regular intervals. All the while keeping the business of running the Band and recording & mixing And writing songs for the next tour. I will say this, With the innocuous life style they live, These boys had no problem looking for subject matter to write songs about. It always pissed me off how rude these reporters were to the Stones. Maybe they looked at them and became very jealous because the Stones have the world on a string and they are loaded with the talent to write and play songs decade after decade. And the older the Stones get the more they get back into their musical roots and the more ambitious they become. Meanwhile these reporters are stuck in a a dead end job. And yea, Money is nice to have but the Stones great great grand children will be receiving checks from B M I or A S C A P long after they are gone. So we know, it's not about the money Its about their love of their craft and the love of the blues and their original songs. Sorry for the super long note.
so well said. TY. I can not say much but to just agree. Their core and environment brought out this great music. Fans just look at albums as a record compared to the last one and it is always measured and compared. Putting it all aside that is not how the Stones built themselves. Too many bands out there that kept the same model over and over again, and bore the hell out of me. cheers my friend! no problem saying what you think, especially that it is classy and tasteful.
Love your stuff Steve. Massive detail. I've never been a fan of Goat's Head Soup apart from Star Star being one of my all time faves. I'll be watching every second of all three of your vids on this though and am well up for having my mind changed by such an incredible Stones fan and source of knowledge and understanding as you.
wow, what a wonderful comment!! thank you. It is all about the turn on's.....and learning more bout what is not obvious. I always say, make sure you listen to Stones with headphones to get the full effects and what their intentions are. Glad we are in sync. Black and Blue is work in progress now!!
@@FlipSideCT Thank you very much Sir for your kind effort in meticulous bringing on a true story of the Rolling Stones to everybody's delight, regardless of whether one is a RS's fan or not. It is a valuable historical record by itself, especially nowadays when every single thing, including all the existing forms of societal relationships, have been subsumed to commodification to the full, whereby all sorts of vulgar monetization of the historical past are particularly blossoming. Therefore your zealous personal endeavour becomes even more valuable, what's more it is being transmuted into one precious gesture of a kind, if you allow, and will be getting due recognition all the more in the days to come. Thank you again Sir, keep on rocking, one Love from Belgrade, Serbia!
@@verysofthard thank you so much for your response and comments. I am sincerely glad when the Stones family can appreciate what was presented. Carefully laid out and with purpose. I just got fed up with the nonsense you point out, and had to take this on for the fans by a fan. Also, a bit fed up with how folks turn against some of the Stones albums and consider themselves fans. I am not an early Stones listener, but would never say the albums are not good. Thanks for understanding and tuning in. Hopefully you check out my other docs. cheers to Serbia!!
This is brilliant, you did the band justice. I had never heard the story of Bill Woman’s girlfriend before or what happened to Anita - horrible. The Stones have been through so much, as well as the people around them. That they are still going is a testament to their greatness.
Thank you for this.
Hi Edward....thank you for the comments. Glad you absorbed.....and got the point here! They were hit with so much.....Charlie was probably the only one untouched. They are pure RnR....a pleasure! cheers steve
Bill Wyman not “Woman” - damn this autocorrect 😊
Dude this is great. I've read a lot about the Stones and you are giving a master class here. You may have a better handle on their history than they do!
lol, thank you for getting it and commenting! appreciate it when a real Stones fan can dig it! Well I just compile many stories. cheers
Dude! Great work. Excellent research and presentation. Your passion for this era is infectious. Really enjoyed it!
Making my day Ross.....thank you for taking the time to comment. I feel the pat on the back, and makes it worthwhile someone like your self enjoys and gets it! It is one thing many of us can have in common.....2 more parts to watch....cheers steve
enjoyed the hell out of this, thanks ,you always do a bang up job on your mini docs
appreciated the watch and comments....so glad to share for Stones and RnR fans!
Great review. I really enjoy how in depth your reviews and documentaries are. Had to sub to your channel. I love Goats Head Soup. I don't see it as a step down from the previous string of albums like some people do. Dare I say it's even a little underrated as an album. Dancing With Mr. D is a great album opener. The first side of the album in particular is really strong.
Thank you SS.....nice! I do not know how any Stones fan can dislike it!
Dude you rule. This is great. I live in Boston and love that it got brought up
cool Jody....just seeing the comments now, sorry for the delay.....Boston had some key moments with them!! thanks for commenting
The Stones went through a lot. Many bands would have given up but they stood the test of time and it can be said with no doubt that as far as the Stones are concerned, the show must and will go on.
exactly. We witnessed some beyond special of what they did and also gave us. No one ever comes close to this or ever will. I do not think folks realize this enough.
@@FlipSideCT The Stones that remain are true survivors who 60 years after forming are still with us. There were of course casualties along the way.
awesome work, lots of new that i have never heard of, shocked to hear about Wyman and Astrid's and Anita's bad experience, looking fwd to part 2, cheers mate.
TY for the comments, well appreciated, a labour of love. Wanted to share info that was not common knowledge. there was a price to pay to be a Stone (even Charlie, hates the touring). Working on Pt2 now....hoping to get it done by Sept 4. cheers steve
I had to recomment and make sure you knew of an update I have made. Regarding Keith and Anita's rape in Jamaica. I was very much wanting to get more info on it, and Keith said in his book that this event was false and it was brought up by an older ex-friend (and his tabloid ghost writer). Many other folks piggy backed on this and the rumor took off. So Keith's word is best! Rather then having to redo the entire video, I decided to include this MUST READ comment in the description. upfront. It bothers me that such a horrific rumor can be put out there. I mention this, becuase getting it correct is important for me, and especially a story like this. be safe, Steve
@@FlipSideCT thanks a lot Steve.. as always ur narration is free flowing..
I've been watching some of your videos, they are very interesting!...By the way, a great album!
thanks Terry....hope you are enjoying these....GHS should not even need to be proven, but I got tired of haters of it.
Super interesting Steve. Great story-telling with photos rather than video. I never realized how many legal problems they had due to drugs. But the music remained the focus through all of it. Looking forward to part 2. ~ Randy
thanks Randy....glad to hear this! They did creep deep into the drug zone, and that was the forbidden zone for the police. They did have a cloud chase them for a while. cheers steve
Your stuff is the best on the Rolling Stones!!
thank you....I really got tired of so called fans bashing The Stones and albums and that there was absolutely no comprehensive timeline that us fans had to go by, everything is piecemeal. So I appreciate your comment for understanding my presentations.....but I did not have to convince you, you knew they are the greatest already!!
This is such a great video mate more stones content please !
thank you!! appreciated, hopefully you saw the few I have and the new Black and Blue.
Yeah! I’m really enjoying your documentaries! Please keep them coming! Thanks Man!
Glad you like them! of course, thanks for sharing that
I just discovered your channel..this is awesome....👍👍❤️❤️Glen kellaway
Thank you Glen....appreciated your comments! hopefully you will go thru some of videos. cheers Steve
I have seen all your Stones documentarys and I like them a lot. I was even happier then I saw your Punk documentary (and all your books in Heads Goat Soup, part 3). Not everyone likes both. We do.
Way to go Magnus.....I can not understand how music lovers do not appreciate books the way we do. It is so much fun to browse thru any book while I listen to tunes. Thanks for being in sync and letting me know!
Another FANTASTIC documentary! Thank you for putting it out!
you have to be listening to some Stones after all that watching. nice . thanks you. B&B Pt3....hoping to upload by tomorrow.
i can't believe you made this. thank you. the stones aren't just my favorite band they are my favorite thing.
I think it was my second one I made. Like you, we all feel that same Stones passion. you are welcome. enjoy!
Steve the ZZ Top story is amazing, had no idea about that!
lol, yea, I know!! it was fun finding that out.
Yet another goodun. Smashing stuff and my third time around with this lol - thank you very much mate. Regards, Dave ✌️
thanks for your support....lol, I watch them myself also. yw

Touch down via long long train ride.
I just arrived in downtown Toronto!!!!
Post 1977 Keith would love it I think ! :)
I’m at the fairmont hotel and I need to find my way to the university campus downtown here .
Got to go!
The clock is ticking !!!!
Sad about both Nicky Hopkins and Jimmy Miller both Passing in 1994 months away from each other. They contributed alot to the Stones sound ( more often on Exiles- Goats Head period. Much unreleased........
They were brilliant, and had to move on ....like many outside folks did.
Steve, what a great start to this album review. I have not seen the deluxe reissue, yet, so Part 3 will be really interesting. Such good background music, too. Thanks, Chris
Great to hear this Chris.....and really glad you appreciated the background music (outtakes from GHS). Yes, I will be spending the weekend dedicated to listening. cheers steve
Hi Steve,That was so enlightening. I really enjoyed this video, the stories and pictures were expertly presented. The "Guys" really screwed up their lives, and others that associated with them. Drugs were their nemesis for sure. It's amazing to me that they were able to write, perform, and just exist. Can't wait for part 2 ! Thank you for your hard work, and research,I do recognize it, and appreciate it. Happiness...Cindy
TY Cindy :) the ones that reply, show me their passion and recognizing the greatest RnR band ever. I truly see how many of my friends growing up took on these role models and went down that drub path also....sad. It was probably worse then we could imagine...then again, watch CSBlues on YT. I agree......how did Keith do what he did in his state.....live and everywhere. Patti was the best thing for him and straightened him out eventually. TY steve

I would love a side dive into what Bill and Charlie were doing when they were apart, what there lives and day to day looked like in that time frame. This is such great work!
thanks Larry! yes, very intriguing and private. Bill, lol, is finishing a book on the history of Chelsea - London. Charlie loved his dogs and horses and collecting Civil War artifacts. Would love to have hanged with them. thanks!!
Really happy to discover your channel. Thanks for all you're doing.
thank your Romain for letting me know.....appreciated this!!
Goats Head Soup, The best álbum ever!
It is a treasure, and any RnR or Stones fan that does not care for it, then I can not accept that.!
Thanks Steve some interesting insight and lots I didn't know. Thank you for putting the work into this, I look forward to Part 2 and the reissue of the record. Take care Dale
thanks Dale....glad to have gave insights....yes, a lot of work indeed. Glad to hear you are getting it....that Brussels Affair is just worth it. cheers
As a former paper boy for the Montreal Star I remember those articles on the tour, great research on those Canadian articles! Always liked Goats Head, great album. Your research is fantastic, again, thank you.
cool Paul.... thank you. I love the research part, a challenge, but fun!
@@FlipSideCT Steve just great, again your passion blows me away. I can say this, I sold cigarettes to Nanette WORKMAN in Montreal in about 1980-81. I guess thats the closest. Seen them in US and Canada. I play a Tele Deluxe, 1951 No Caster custom shop, , ‘78 Tele, 1973 Les Paul., Keith is a living god for me. One thing you said really got me, yes Ronnie is a good guy, I like Ron, nothing against him, but the MICK TAYLOR years to me are the best. I like the separation vs interlacing better. Both Keith and Mick prodigies at their own craft. I got the single thru the lonely its wonderful, love the solo, I totally get your message re the span of years. I believe I own every stones album, multiple copies, but i dig your date range. If i could disagree i would but i cannot. Thank you again.
@@PaulSmith-um2tp very kind Paul. We got the same blood flow for them. Talking Stones with like people makes a great connection, then put in guitars on top and we go even further. Nice set of Guitars you have. Ronnie, Keith or Brian, we take them all. All depends on our mood on which songs we want to hear at the moment. But if I want to jam, anything from 68-81 works fine! cheers
Steve, this was an absolute tour de force of a deep dive. I always relish each documentary video you put out, you clearly source and labour over research and materials when bringing them together, but it's your voice and your narrative that is always the real star. That's what I love most - knowing you are guiding us through and letting us see things through your eyes, with your voice. The voice of an old friend, like being down at a bar with great company.
I was simply unaware of much that went down after Nellcote wound up, and the most horrifying were the rape stories/allegations; that would see most bands implode and people break down. The Stones juggernaut had it's own momentum, I guess, but the human carnage always seemed to be from outside the eye of the storm. Anyway, can't wait to dive in to part 2. Cheers- Dean
Thank you Dean sir!! I am making this in a method that I would i like to watch it also. It is a deep intense RnR geekness we have (the ones that can comment and appreciate it). Tell me something I do not know please was one factor as I watched other reviews. The other factor was a listener needs to understand it all and know how to listen to a Stones album/song. It is a science....like analyzing a film in a college art class. Their external and self induced trauma contributed to what we hear now. That is the beauty. always appreciate your support! Part 2 is live and kicking and awaits you now. talk soon! steve
Watch out boy Steve's made another three part masterpiece lol.
Was interesting to read your motivation in creating these essential documentaries was a response to all the bullshit levelled at this album plus B and B and IORR. Aren't we lucky lol.
Btw I was given this album by the son of a preacher man when I was at school. Robert Murray ( Jasper). A true gentleman and someone I looked up to and admired.
But I often wondered what his dad thought of Dancing with Mr D. Love that riff.
Cheers mate.
thank you! yes, have to squelch the BS out there. A nice gift from a nice young lad!
In 1972, what a year for me. I just started high school. I loved the Stones and hate Beatles. ( I started liking the Beatles after the white album) I collected a lot of Stone stuff. Saved mags with clippings. I followed everything they did. Great video. Thank you so much for making this video.
Well appreciated comment! I was 78'....and learned from the elders in 75'....the Bowie, Lou and Stones. So you had a great jump start from me. I could not understand the depths of the Stones then, only that that rocked us! Collecting at that time must have been great. The mags were all we had to get closer to them other then seeing them live, they physically seemed light years away from us as fans, untouchable. As we grow older, we see things differently now....and lol, Keith now lives 2 towns away from me in CT. thanks steve
I had to recomment and make sure you knew of an update I have made. Regarding Keith and Anita's rape in Jamaica. I was very much wanting to get more info on it, and Keith said in his book that this event was false and it was brought up by an older ex-friend (and his tabloid ghost writer). Rather then having to redo the entire video, I decided to include this MUST READ comment in the description. upfront. It bothers me that such a horrific rumor can be put out there. Many thanks! glad you enjoyed this....watching more I hope
What could I say...again So Great, a bit of time for me still in joy
cool!! thanks again!
Hello Steve; Hope you are doing well, & staying healthy. If anyone in the VC could put together a video album analysis of the Rolling Stones it's you. Done in your inimitable way, the archival footage & the picture gallery make this album review shine through as a document of events that transpired at the time. This deluxe edition of Goat's Head Soup gives the listener an opportunity to ( hopefully) finally enjoy all the music that was created. Really poignant description of Keith's relationship with Gram Parsons during the Exile on Main Street sessions. With Jimmy Miller manning the board. Good description of the bands " problems " during the recording phase of the LP's. Informative & well presented in the context of the events that occurred. Looking forward to part 2. Till then, take care. Tina & Pat!~
What can I say....hugs and TY's!!! I can not let things go on, as people just bash this album / consider as trash, and do not understand what it was about. It is like walking into a thorn bush when I watch reviews by some folks copying Wikipedia verbatim, and letting others dictate their opinion. thanks for getting it U 2. :)

absolutely phenomenal thank you ..binging..
cool Jeff, thank you for commenting. We fans have been waiting for something like this for some time.....I just gave up on waiting! glad you tuned in and seeing them all.
Nice job, Steve! Looking forward to part 2.
Thank you Rick, appreciate you letting me know! working on PT2 now. I am trying to get it out approx 9/4....we will see. cheers steve
I went to the ‘72 show at RFK stadium. Stevie Wonder opened I told my friends how great the stones were on the drive there. They sounded like a crappy garage cover band. Maybe Kieth didn’t sleep for a few days? It did feel exotic having the Stones from England on stage in front of me as a 17 year old kid 🤟
That might be the best year they were on and so tight. The sound however is another story. There is a bootleg on YT July 4th 72. audio is poor but I still would have loved to see that. thanks for sharing.
Absolutely fantastic review Steve. Wow. After seeing this I am definitely considering grabbing this box set. I must be a real fan because this album has always been one of my favorites. I also loved Mick Taylor's period with the band. From Bleed to IOR&R. That period was simply incredible. Especially Exile & Goats. The first time that I heard Silver Train, 100 Years Ago, Hide Your Love and the unforgettable Star Star I was sold. Forgot about Mr D. So so cool. Soem of the photos and the video that you showed I have never seen before. Loved seeing the Goats Head sessions photos. I would love to get a copy of that benefit show that they did in LA with Cheech & Chong. I wonder if that ever made it onto a bootleg or video for that matter? I do remember reading about Mick Taylor's unhappiness with the band. He was clearly one of the best young guitar players that I ever heard at that time. He could play the blues better than anyone. I completely forgot about Jimmy Miller. I think that most of those guys who played on Goats are sadly gone.
Are you sure that you were not a writer, author or documentary editor before you joined the VC? This part one is something to be proud of Steve. Can't wait for part two~
Rob/Boston
Well said and love it Rob! Check out POPMARKET to buy it I think they are the cheapest...I spent $95 w/shipping, and found a cupon online. I think the price may have gone up though.
Silver Train is All Down The Line's sister.....and people do not realize that . I purposely search for mostly non common photos. I do not know anything about the benefit show's recordings other then what i showed live (w/o audio). Mick T just kills it! Many forget Jimmy Miller......I would love to do a piece on him.....he is worthy of it. His 1/2 sister is trying to get him into the RnR HOF (not a fan of the HOF, but he should get some recognition). LOL, my background was filming/editing/producing in Weddings Bar Mitzvahs, events, concerts, commercials and some documentaries. A business I did with my brother and then on my own in CT. I stopped about 6 years ago professionally. So yes, I do have the know how and the head on how to put it together. I enjoy taking nothing and creating something (ala Jimmy Miller). thank you for all!! Trying for Part 2 hopefully around Sept 4.....just so much work involved. cheers steve
Awesome observation how all the lps done with jimmie all sound different, and all great!
thanks Chester.....I can not put up with anymore how many others made reviews and copied what Wikipedia says and stop there. It is more about insight and how was the work really done and why! getting deep. that is what I want to hear. thanks steve
In 1972 I was 18 and doing all of the stockwork in the basement of Hunter's Books in Beverly Hills. I got a call on the interstore phone - "Dennis, the Rolling Stones are here!" and I quietly ran up the stairs to the salesfloor. There was Charlie, there was Mick Taylor. They were in the antique section of the store. Later they told me - "Mick bought a first edition of Alice in Wonderland" and Charlie bought some exquisite large art books. Sure, seems like a long, cold winter...
wow....seeing them out of their element and the 3 of them. I had seen some footage somewhere and not sure what time period of one of them in a book store. Mick's investment probably was a good one! that is cool, thanks for sharing!
@@FlipSideCT - if that bookstore was in L.A. then it was Hunter's. It was considered the ultimate bookstore on earth. I did the slavework there for 3 years. Horribly I stole some books to sell and trade. When I went back 10 years later to make amends the owner Lew had died and the store was gone.
@@dennismason3740 you tried, and hopefully washed away the guilt. But cool to work in a store like that!
@@FlipSideCT - the amends are built into the intent, the effort. Three years of backbreaking stockwork, moving and organizing literally tons of books every day for a 1.50 (US) an hour. So cool.
Wauw! love that Boston Mayor story! and im only 5 minutes into the doc. Thanx!
yea, pretty amazing that they had that impact and the major put out the possible fire.
I really enjoyed this Steve. Very nice Jimmy Miller focus at the end. Your right he was the Stones "Sixth Man"....
Glad Bobby! I do not see many REAL STONES heads in the VC, just a few, when you look how many fans there are. Jimmy's half sister was a journalist and wrote a good piece: www.judithmiller.com/23404/mr-jimmy. well you get it all.....ty.

Thanx 4 all the info on the great mr .Jimmy......🇦🇺
for me personally Perth is my most loved gig of the best garage band, rough, straight, energy. 73 I remember pretty good. There was a small music store, Benny`s Vinyl shop. I went there and the whole show windows have been filled up with Goats Head Soup. I bought the album there...
very cool....I owned the Perth show and know of it. We played endlessly. I can not imagine the excitement of fans knowing they were all the way there in their home town. thanks for sharing
The Stones Core did ride the waves and they past through the and over the crests and dips mountains and valleys .
As times changed the people around them changed as well.
Had Jimmy Miller not wanted to return back to work with the stones it would have looked bad .
It was better to get rid of him first . Not ask him back before he did something like that .
I guess it became clear that he didn’t have that much left to contribute and drugs were now dominating his life in a bad way .
Better to get rid of him before he quits.
oh yes!!!!! Perform or get out!
Nicely done 👍 always thought it was a criminally underrated album. . Suffers from following exile... Personally I love it.
Thanks WW.....How can someone NOT enjoy this.....put it this way, if it came out now....we would be listing it as one of their best since the 70's. Then again, Exile was chopped up at the time it came out.....but as a after thought, yes you are right.
I'm glad that you mentioned, but did not delve too much in to, "Cocksucker Blues." I found a version of it on TH-cam and I found it interesting, but more sad than anything.
There is no greater example of how the "Peace and Love" sixties devolved into the hedonism, selfishness and exploitation of the seventies.
Of course, I do not wish to judge the Rolling Stones too much. I engaged in "seventies activity" that I am am not too proud of ... with far fewer resources.
oh the 70's was very raw! Yes, CB is now out there......it is not as 'crazy' to watch it now, but back then it showed some pure raunchiness/boredom and the RnR living most of us would never witness.
Hi Steve, another great one,, can t waitt for partt ttwo.

Minor, reggae purist point, but regarding the status of Dynamic Sound (15:07) it's fairer to say that Studio One was the "Muscle Shoals of Jamaica."
Nothing wrong with your opinion. Great sounds from both.
I was there at the Boston Garden concert... they were great! I shot slides ... !
A great show and experience. thanks for sharing, should make them into prints!
In 1973 I moved from Venice Beach to West Hollywood, heart of L.A. Stones Country. One-quarter mile away was that recording studio on Santa Monica. In 1974 I took a shiteton of acid and I started dancing. I became the "house dancer" (I couldn't afford the entry fee) at the Starwood, oh yes, the Starwood, the ultimate small r'n'r' club that would present...anybody. Rush, the Go Gos, Link Wray, you name the band. Mick Jagger and i would miss each other by a minute on many occasions. It was like a weird game. Mick was 9 years older than me and I was a competent r'n'r' guitar player and singer. I couldn't write a song to save my life. I sold weed for 10-15 dollars an OUNCE. Iggy Pop lived in the basement cellar apartment, 50 bucks a month, and would drop by to bum a joint or two. Angela Bowie dropped by for cheap weed. Keith Ralf (Yardbirds) dropped by before he electrocuted himself in New York. The dude who co-directed the film Performance dropped by - Donald Cammell? I looked good and I had some chops and I couldn't write a song to save my. I started writing songs in 2012 and I have about two-thousand, many of them pretty good. Ahh, Mick, you frungy garbone. I can do a disturbingly deep impersonation of Jagger. If you come to Hollywood bring yer phone and I'll peel off a Stones or two.
more connections.....you were certainly in the heartbeat of the RnR action. You don't realize it until years later that it was a special time, of what you actually went thru and shared it with some many RnR'ers. Iggy was in a real bad mental place then. So it took many years to figure out the lyric side at least you did it. Hope it gets you money and/or satisfaction now! thanks again for sharing you stories! very cool to here!
Wow! I was going to look for a documentary to watch on Netflix. I'm so glad I ran into this. That was a crazy time for The Stones. I can't believe the terrible things that happened to them and especially the women. I didn't really know much about Jimmy Miller and your info and footage was fantastic.
Wow....that made me blush! TY Melinda. Super crazy, yes. No one can keep up with them. I was horrified to read about the incidents to Astrid/Anita. the trauma. I can not believe someone would make the stories up. Glad you picked up on Jimmy.....a perfect match to get the Stones up a few levels higher then everyone, along with the Johns brothers. I still like goasthead soup and its only rock and roll they are different from the four previously done but hey everyone was adapting and changing so were the stones!

right Roy, We get such diversity and sound from them. Every album is great, just depends on the mood.
So many RnR bands stay with their same formula and do not break off into other sounds. Stones move along to their feel and times. Something many fans do not absorb.

The guitar work in the other 2 era's are masterful. Brian was different for sure
I love these, so far what I've seen of them; Beggars, Let it Bleed, Exile...
Couple of things that bugged me a little because these are so well researched-
Nellcote is pronounced nell cot, not nicolet, and it's satanic, not santanic. But again, thanks for doing these. Excellent🤘👍
And I'm SO with you on the listen loud with headphones tip!!

Wow, what a great first 45 minutes. Talk about chaos and mayhem surrounding a record. I do worry about the facts since you did not use Wikipedia, are they accurate lol. Hi Steve....I saw your comment for PART 2 (only first sentence) in the notifications bell...but your comment just does not show up in the video at all.....what the heck...
Steve, that has happened to me periodically. It shows I have a response but it is not in the comment section of the video. Crazy stupid. I feel bad for not answering that person. I was mentioning the first RS song I remember was Angie. I was 12, we were in the station wagon and it was a dark cold night, 4 kids in the back and Angie came on the radio. I was mesmerized, it was the most incredible song. It is still my favorite Stones song because of the impact it had on me. Top notch video again, it’s like a love letter to Goat Heads Soup

Kudos Steve, that is important to get right as we tend to like that tragic stories best and they get repeat3d the most. I read Keith’s biography also and I rember that section about this but not the details. We got enough sensationalism in the world. Thanks for the info. Like all your documentaries I save them as I find them historically fascinating.
I thought about this last night: where the band was when entering the studio late 72 in Jamaica. The fact is in many ways it was 1968 all over again in the sense that, for the most part, because the double album nature of Exile cleared the decks of material (Blood Red Wine, everything on the 2nd disc of deluxe Exile, Travelin' Man, etc notwithstanding...lol). They were in a sense starting from scratch again this time with Marianne and her influence gone, Keith and his muse Anita desecending further into various addictions, joined by Jimmy Miller, Nicky Hopkins ( a key piece of the 1968-1972 run), and even Andy Johns. So they were up against it in a sense.
Mick leaned more on Mick Taylor, and brought in Billy Preston, who would serve largely in Nicky's role through Black and Blue.
What's interesting and probably as a result of Keith's condition is that they not only didn't go further down the road exploring their sound with the horns (with the exception of a couple tracks) they also ditched the acoustic blues and folk that really served as the foundation from Beggars through Sticky Fingers, and a lesser degree with Exile. There is very little acoustic guitar (Angie a notable exception) or blues found here.
There was a continum and evolution of a certain style/sound foundation from 1968-1972. That sound was not electric guitar-based rock n roll it was an amalgamation of American roots music peppered with some electric guitar screamers and mood pieces. The 2nd side of Sticky Fingers is a perfect example. After Bitch it's Stax-like soul, and after that largely acoustic-based songs. Sticky Fingers is a landmark album, and really all the "big 4" are because the Stones created their own version of RNR that was not really electric guitar-centric. The electric guitar could on certain songs be the center but usually it served the overall sound tapestry of the song.
That all changed with Goat's Head Soup. This is apparent at the jump with the clever swamp rock inversion of the JJF chords Keith plays on Mr. D. From here on out Stones albums were centered around electric guitar. Also each album was different from the next with the slight exception of Some Girls through Tattoo You (though it seemed more sequencing formula than inspiration by this point). After Exile they pretty much abandoned the wildly successful and revered sounds they spent 1968-1972 building.
It's really not until It's Only Rock n Roll that the era of the Stonesy rocker begins.
I really like Goats Head Soup it's not so much a criticism of the album as an observation of the sea change which took place during those sessions.
David Bowie is always called a chameleon whose sound changed from album to album but the Stones were just as adventurous in a way as they lept from style to style Goats Head through Blue And Lonesome.
Something was lost after Exile and also something was found beginning with Goat's Head Soup. In retrospect it's the album that transitions them into the rest of their career. Though it is a pity they never really tried to mine that rich vein of acoustic blues, country and folk that drove much of their big 4 run again.
With the death of the beloved Charlie Watts it all comes to an end now. All that's left is the coda of whatever is in the hard drives from all the post-ABB sessions.
The Stones have probably recorded their last song (overdubs and Mick adding vox to tracks notwithstanding). Or have they?
how long did it take to write this up....a day? damn, a lot here. Real nice points and geeky observations. thanks for the analysis, it was nice to read. You should do some vid comments and postings! I have mentioned and seems as though you agree....they were a product of their environment with their music and took on what they had in front of them. Nothing forced. I think that is what you are getting at. They did not want to stay repetitive. I really do not enjoy the over produced so many layered of sounds songs they have done the past 30 years....it is time that they just went a bit full circle and go to basic 16 track recording, and only have 5 play. Unfortunately, without Bill and now even more Charlie....they may have lost it! I think this was your point also!! anyway, well done and a pleasure to read!

I’d like to add BOSTON WAS ON FIRE !!!!
They started to burn down Boston when they couldn’t get the Stones .
@ Steve Flip Side CT
I have to make a quick note that yes in 1971 for Keith ( and his group of people) it was I think.
For Mick might have been not so much.
And somehow Gram Parsons got kicked out from the south of France in 1971 but that could mean that it just got very wild and crazy and boiled over but from what I know about Keith and Grams relationship that’s almost an impossibility. That it happened is quite a event for Keith I would presume ( but he had a lot of people to take care of at that house including his son Marlon named after the well known Marlon who played the GodFather. )
There were a lot of people there including Anita and Keith might have been a one on one guy with Gram.
Keith’s point of view of 1971 - 1972
JIMMY MILER SOLID GOLD
Mick’s point of view of him at 1971 -1972 was he was starting not to function properly.
If I put micks point of view together with Keith’s and form one view these were great and wild and crazy and GREAT TIMES but they were going off the tracks slightly .
I sense a definite slightly discontentment
by mick Jagger . Saying it is slight is probably putting it mildly .
Keith seems happy enough and I think he WAS INFACT RUNNING THE SHOW !!!!
Once they got back to LA I think mick came down hard . Look at the famous photos from LA in 1972 of mick and Keith working on what would become EXILE together!!!!!! AT SUNSET SOUND.
I think this is where mick took matters back into his own hands .
He’s said. It is ultimately my responsibility to finish Exile and how it ends up.
And there were all these drunks and junkies around when it was being made .
Funny we don’t hear a lot from the other on how they felt about working at KEITH HOUSE
BILL CHARLIE MICK T.
Mick and Keith seem to be back working together again much more in harmony ON GOATS HEAD SOUP in late 72 and 1973 ! :p

They are trying to take care of this in quite a high class way. SOOO GOOD OF THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO!!!!
I know the Go Go's came way after 1974. I returned to the Starwood, homeless, in 1979 and I danced. The Ventures played there in 79. The Go Go's in 1980, X in 1980 and a zillion great bands. It was owned by the "L.A. Mob", whoever they were. John Holmes was said to be in their employ. Rodney Bingenheimer had a club up on Sunset called Rodney Bingenheimers English Disco. He still lives in a house in the posh neighborhood next to Fairfax and Sunset. He may be alive, I'm not doing the research. I saw him 30 years ago and he could barely walk. I found a room when I got sober in 1982. West Hollywood became an incorporated city and kicked all of the poor people out by 1992. It's just like a creepy version of Beverly Hills now.
...more! You lived it your way, but still got to be in the action, but also paid a price. Some great time periods again and right where it was happening. At least you got your treatment earlier then later, glad to see that. I have my crew from the 70's, and they still are not the same even after years and rehabs. I happened to take the different path, and did not chose the drugs, but we always were connected with our RnR. I do see LA is a mess with the homeless which is so sad. another topic!
This should be interesting. I'm smokin' up..... I saw them on that 72 tour July 15th twelfth row dead centre. What a show. Stevie Wonder opened for them.
lol.....always a toke with listening made it more intense. 72....12th row meant you were packed in the pit probably 10ft from stage. No sitting, no rules (and no phones). Yes I saw the footage with Stevie.
@@FlipSideCT No Pit. All floor chairs from first row all the way back with coppers standing in front of stage so nobody could approach. Once the stones started everybody stood up so I climbed on my chair.. Down at the gardens if you were in the first 10 rows you couldn't see all the stage... Rows 12 to 20 dead center were the best seats in the house.

It is lovely here if you don’t catch it, if those around you don’t get it , if you don’t listen to the media constantly about it , if your work or business is basically not effected by it. Other than that it is lovely. I’d rather listen to SOUP and just not pay too much attention to all the media and happy news. That’s my own
new normal. Haha 😂 my new normal is to shut the media off and enjoy the music . Put a new clean mask on , wash my hands 10,000 days a time ! Haha 😂 Keep some social distance while still talking face to face with people.

cool GC......Japan must be a blast. I worked for Panasonic/Fujifilm....so know the culture. Stones love Canada. I would have loved to seen a few small gigs in Toronto. There is a group here called the Shidoobees (on facebook)....they are the ones that travel all over to see shows. That would be rough to see a Tokyodome show with such stiff folks......I am sure they scream, but on queue. thanks for sharing! Music is our universal enjoyment and be appreciated anywhere!!
Toronto Canada 🇨🇦 and the little blind girl saved Keith’s life ( in a way ) so I guess he loves Toronto for that reason ???
Ohhhh what happens to that little blind angel 👼? Where is she now?
@@gregdettling6693 yes....I will talk about why and how she got to be the Angel. But do not know her status right now,
