I am absolutely fascinated by all the behind the scenes information you provide. I have also watched your Let it Bleed documentary another brilliant piece of work. Thank you for providing such amazing works.
Steve, This was Great ! "Goats Head Soup" is my second favorite Stones album, "Sticky Fingers" my first. Your review was superb, and I loved the film footage. I'm always amazed watching Micks dance moves ! I loved watching Charlie's face on some of the clips, sometimes he looks like "Why am I doing this"? and Mick Taylor is an extraordinary guitarist.I love Keith for just being Keith. In my opinion..there isn't a bad song on this album, and I can't wait to get my copy that I pre- ordered for my husband (Who is a bigger fan than me !). I loved listening to your narration, and as I said the great clips you included.I'm looking forward to your next video. I appreciate the hard work, love, and dedication you put into this series. Thank You ! Happiness, and health, Cindy P.S. I always wondered about the album cover, thanks for the explanation.
Hi Cindy.....hopefully one day we can have a seltzer and listen to it together. Good eye on the footage....I had taken a lot of time to find the right pieces. I am not so into Mick's later period free form "dance" moves, nothing beats his 70's stage appearance. Cool husband, he should join us also. thanks again for all your support!! the best, steve
I adore your work. Thank you so much. The best docs i seen on any bands. I'm a musician living in Boston. In the early 90's i spent a bit of time with Jimmy Miller. Hanging, partying, driving him to recording jobs or here & there. We got along great. People were always lining up to ask him questions. He was very gracious. I stayed away from that mostly. But on some longer rides we'd talk. I asked him about "Angie" one time and he told me that keith originally sang Anita not Angie, but Mick flat out refused to sing anita. So they decided to go with Angie. Not any specific person. just the sound of it worked perfect. For what it's worth this is what Jimmy Miller told me. I have no reason not to believe him. We met thru my then manager Helen Hotz who hired Jimmy to produce a couple of songs of mine. We talked about a lot of stuff. Not just music. I feel blessed to have been friends with him for a couple of years before he died. Jimmy's wife & son Michael were with him and Jo Jo Lane was also living in town at that time too. So.... that's what Mr Jimmy told me about "Angie" Thanks again for your GREAT work. LOVE IT!!
Hi Charlie, thank you so much for commenting and sharing this. Glad you click with me on the docs!! For the fans from a fan. You should enjoy the others. What a great unique experience you had with Jimmy. Not many can say that. He was so much a catalyst for them. I can not even imagine the going on's and what he went thru. But a true genius. I am sure what he said was true.....and wished I could have mentioned this as a possible scenario. Sounds like you kept your relationship in the right groove , and knew how to approach him. Can you imagine how there are some so called "Fans" who just do not like this album. If they ever made this today, we would be NUMB! thanks for all, enjoy the rest.
Your docs are just as good, actually more informative and just as entertaining for us hard core fans.Absolutely phenomenal.Thank you for your hard work and would gladly donate for more.Any great band will do.
Thanks DC.....well appreciated.....that was my intent. A Stones Fan needed to get something out for other Stones Fans. glad you got my objective..... My Black and Blue Doc Part one is out there now!
I'm loving these videos. The footage is so great! The song Angie is very beautiful and a highlight in that era of The Stones. The guitar intro and piano are incredible and Mick's vocals are perfect. The whole album is so good but this is the highlight for me. I loved hearing your perspective on this. I still can't get over how chaotic and tragic their lives are at this point and yet they create something so powerful. Loved this!
Glad you chimed and let me know Melinda. You are a RnR'er for sure! Listening to Angie brings back to 1975 when I first heard it, very innocently as a 14 year old. IT is flawless....and delivers what it intended to deliver. I get it how that would be the highlight. They had so much external and self induced internal trauma, this was the real deal of the RnR life, and this was the child they created, like you say, powerful! best, steve
KILLER!!!! What a great overview ! Far and beyond any others. Cool cool insight and info, love your take on this! Now everyone should get an appreciation of this album. Love that white SG Keith played live. Mick and Mick tear it up! Can not wait for Brussels Affair!!
Im loving what you are doing here man. I too am a huge fan of the Taylor era Stones. The detail you put into these videos shows your deep love, and that's extremely important.
@@FlipSideCT ...and you respond quickly and personally! Now THAT'S how you get a loyal fanbase. Im 49, so i grew up with Woody, but as soon as I heard "Exile On Main Street" at around 18, i knew there was something special about Taylor.
@@andrewconrad2859 NICE!! I am finding how there are STONES FANS over all, then STONES fans by Jones/Taylor/Wood eras. If I had to make a choice, yes Taylor. Yes, hearing Exile is a surly a sublime experience.
I’ve always thought of this album as such a gem. I remember buying it when it came out and I found myself mesmerized by the intensity as you noted on the latter half of 100 years ago, the drive of Silver Train, and Winter is just one of my favorites. Absolutely beautiful song. Again, thanks for doing these documentaries. I think they’re terrific.
appreciate your input Charles, thanks. When someone on YT could not figure which album was worse this one or B&Blue, I knew it was time to make the doc and educate the so called fans out there. I was fed up with the bashing. Any REAL fan knows the beauty of this!
I love the cover they used for Goats Head Soup. Very erie shot of Keith Richards on the back cover with their logo. When I see that picture, I think of the song " Comin Down Again." Thank You for your documentaries & insight into the album covers. I'm subscribing.
This album has grown on me over the years and definitely has a dark, dank, comedown vibe that is all it’s own in the Stone’s catalog. The strings on Angie, Winter, and Coming Down Again are beautiful.
Most of the general public does not know, so I needed to do what I can to bring Nicky to public eye. I wished his solo work was as good as his session for others.
a pleasure CEA....I know we the fans needed something better to bring us closer to them and get a good background. I was also fed up with hearing folks put down albums and just not get what they are about. hope you check out the others. thanks
Like you said, this time period was the "Perfect Storm" for the Stones and their music. Amazing how they survived all of the turbulent times. I love how Mick Jagger doesn't take any shit from anyone. Bianca exposed Mick to the finer side of life, and he took this to the next level of class. Thank you again for your work on these docs.
An absolutely superb video...an astonishing effort. This is obviously a labour (yes English spelling as i'm from the U.K) of love and must have taken an age to create. Have sent this link to some friends suggesting they subscribe to your channel. Right i'm going to watch again...many many thanks my friend!!!
Wonderful Barrie......TY! spreading the word is great.....as I not only like to GEEK out with others on the Stones, but the ultimate goal to help others understand and approach them as a science, like studying a film in college. YEs, Coming from a musical / recording / video background it easy pretty much 2nd nature to do this....but so so so time consuming and focus needed to make it flow correctly. thanks for all. cheers steve
Mick Taylor's guitar playing back then was very impressive. One of the best blues rock guitar players out there. The perfect choice to replace Brian Jones~
a pleasure Oliver, thank you for letting me know, and real glad you enjoyed the trip and the presentation I gave. A lot of prep went to this, and glad when folks like yourself appreciate it!!
Winter is my all-time favorite DEEP Stones cut. Jivin' Sister Fanny, Child of the Moon, Luxury and Tops round out the top five. Great video once again.
thank you !!! glad you can appreciate the so called 'non popular' albums. A Stones head can appreciate all of them, and not even rank really rank them.
Great to see these clips by a hardcore Stones-fan. I would not even call these clips; they are actual documentaries. You mentioned the '73 Nicaraguan Benefit show. It's a pity that the boots have (so far) not been all that great. But - I say that the very best shows the Stones may have ever laid down are from the Down Under '73 mini tour. They were red-hot during Taylor's tenure; in '69, in '70 (the forgotten tour), in '72 US and '73 Europe of course. But wedged in there is Australia '73. The show in Perth, and one of the Sydney shows are some of the very best one will ever hear the band. The shows are recorded very well. You can even hear every Jim Price note, LOL. That is rare. Very interesting what you tell about the photo shoot for cover. I always liked the cover a lot. The veiled look is great on Mick. And definitely Hepburn-esque. Is that Bailey standing in front of the framed gallery shots of GHS? I kind of hope you end up doing this type of deep review of all their '68-'78 albums. When you talked about the GHS individual shots, and how they tie in a little with each person, it made me think of the 'Black & Blue' inside shot, with the burning cigarettes. I have always thought that the way each band member traces the lit end in the dark night, sort of corresponds to their personality.
Sounds like you need to make a video and get some turn ons going. you got some deep insights that seem to be valuable. I heard Perth, not Sydney though....I like that the horns are up there and crisp and when all the sounds are simple and separated. Unlike the post 78. just to much going on and very crowded in sound. They are a guitar band and that needs to be front and clear. Yes that is Baily. I do not look deep into covers, and usually like them, except for the lame Dirty Work. I do hope to get to B&B / Some Girls....I just need more literature on it to get details. not a lot out there. I do not have much on it now. Hopefully you saw IORR. cheers steve
You're absolutely right about listening to these albums (any album really) through headphones. It makes all the difference, you can really get a good volume (not excessively loud) and you hear things that you don't through speakers. Thanks for all these episodes this is my fourth time, I think, watching. Thanks man.
Hey SK, I love when I hear the Headphones appreciation. Stones, and all RnR is meant to be played loud and clear, and to understand what the artist did in the studio. thanks for getting it! appreciated
My personal favorite is Winter probably the sister to Moonlight Mile . Those haunted guitar chords played by Mick Jagger? And Mick Taylor 's fat gorgeous lead tones . Just sublime its a pity Keith wasn't on it
a strange song when I first heard it, it took many deep listens as the beginning always threw me. But that friggin end jamming. Who does that ?? Kudos to you for knowing this from the start.
This series is another really interesting examination. There's a lot that's novel about Goat's Head in terms of arrangements-multiple parts to songs, time and key changes, wah and other effects. Feels like Jagger is carrying most of the songwriting load here for whatever reason. Taylor gets to stretch out a little bit here, I wonder if that was kinda by design, maybe his restlessness was palpable by this point. Jagger is such an iconic figure and seems to do what he does so effortlessly, it's good to stop as you do and consider some of the words and realize what a brilliant artist, songwriter and unique and emotive vocalist he is. He's also a hard-working S.O.B. Second hardest-workin man in show business after JB? There's one part where you're talking about StarStar and you say: they're playing in the key of F but do it live in E....maybe sped it up in studio (ala Maybeline).... I got to say the technical/musical information in your series really sets your videos apart in an important way. The discussion of the musicality of this amazing band gets lost in most documentaries about the Stones (ie Stones in Exile). The gear talk, the insights into recording techniques used, guitar tunings, who's at the board and when, of course- personnel, are crucial to the overall understanding of the profound musicology of these guys, even if non-musicians might tune out for a minute. Anyways, thanks, and two big thumbs up from NC.
sorry just seeing this. yes, Jagger does not get credit for what he does and did. Yeah, the studio Star Star is F, live they are in E standard. The gear talk and recordings and how they miked up is so key. If you ever meet Keith, be prepared to geek out and talk AMPS and guitars to stay engaged in conversation for sure.
we totally agree, and that tells me you do get it! so many folks / so called fans turn it down,. There is absolutely no reason to, if you are a TRUE fan! thanks for sharing
Sent here by Fitobetiedied. I'm glad he did. Your analysis is fantastic. New subscriber as of now. Now I'll watch part two. Thanks for your time and effort.
thank Rundoetx....glad he did, very nice of him. Appreciate your kind words. Ah oh...."new sub as of now"....hopefully you will stay. My channel and info is coming from a long time RnR'er. I would suggest you also go back to my older videos and find some more docs and Vinyl Finds. I am looking into a Let It Bleed doc next, still got a ton of research to compile. cheers steve
Thank you STBC for commenting and letting me know. Great to know it is appreciated. Part 3 is coming in today. These take so much time and based on responses hope to work on another one. cheers steve
Another Great Collection of Stones pieces that I've never seen nor heard. The Ending with the Goats Head, I can see a Face but not clearly Jagger. I'm really enjoying these Works of Yours, Very much Appreciated by a Stones Fan.
Hi Steve. Your narration is great and your passion comes through. Superb job, as was part 1. Really enjoyed these videos and the information in them. Thank you.
Good morning Steve. I watched some of this last night and the other half this morning. Man you did a spectacular job with it. I don't think you arr going to find a better overall three part Goats Head Soup breakdown/review of the box set on the Internet. I believe that there is something for everyone on the album. I love how you detailed the tracks. What research. Where they were recorded. When and what they were about. 38:08 Charlie always looked like he did not like to shoot videos to promote the songs. But you could tell that he was all in. He loves playing with the band. The clips. Man oh man. I am always amazed at the clips that you find because there are so many that I have never seen before. They also fit in perfectly to whatever album or time period of the band that you are talking about. I did not know about the censoring of Star Star. Get permission from the man himself Steve McQueen to release the line was pure brilliance. Also very cool of him to let them do so. Who wouldn't want to be named in a Stones song? I give them permission right now to use my name in any upcoming song. {smile} Superb job all around Steve. Looking forward to part three~ Rob/Boston
cheers my RnR bro....I just love it when I can geek out. This is how we approached the Stones songs even years back.....like a college class breakdown of a film, the science of it all. We were / are super geeks with it....just like Beatles fans. Coming from a musical / recording / video background it easy pretty much 2nd nature to do this....but so so so time consuming and focus needed to make it flow correctly. thanks for all. YEs Charlie is just ......WTF do I have to do now? make a video....damn, ok. They ALL knew they had to do things they did not want to do and did it for the Band name and the fans. I am very impressed with Mick and Keith's calmness on band promotion and the press...they knew they could not be asses (most of the time). Not many names mentioned in Stones song, so that is a RnR honor with royalty...oh yes. Best.
On an Emotional level The songs Angie,Comin Down Again,Can You Hear The Music,Winter, and even Heartbreaker AND 100 Years Ago connect on the feelings of longing regret pain and pleasure ,really And Star Star and Silver Train are physical pleasure songs.
RJ, yea, different emotional roller coasters, they needed some romantic ballads so that is why some mellower pieces. I love the mixture of acoustic/mellow/ballad/rockin songs, this is how an album should delivered. maybe add another rocker.
I always loved Can You Hear the Music. I love the guitars and horn sounding thing (I think they are horns, maybe guitars) that sort of buzz like bees as the chorus comes in. It's just an interesting direction they took compared to other things they are known for.
Mind blowing album. This is and IORR are the albums that I got so fed up with folks bashing. I could not believe it, but then came to conclusion they are NOT STONES fans as many of are much deeper. So decided to expose this and teach folks what they are missing. If they still don't get it.....then, get off my cloud! glad you get it! I think I break down the song more with what is on it.
Really nice video! Goat's Head is one of my Top 3 Stones albums along with the previous 2 with Mick Taylor who provided a big boost and leap in technical quality
Hello Steve; Once again you have created a comprehensive video detailing The Rolling Stones LP Goats Head Soup. The video takes an in depth look at an underrated, under appreciated record. From the controversial cover to the music recorded, the Stones were left to work under extreme conditions. Giving the record a feeling of disillusionment to some. This in relation to the style of music they had released previously. A definitive change in direction. The record delivers on many fronts. Which never disappoint the listener. There will always be a discussion on how the music was mixed prior to release. Nice explanation for Angie which over the years has taken on many forms & personas. All the tracks displayed their own expressive meaning & feeling. A record to be listened too many times over in order to fully understand the music. Very informative video in the context of your presentation. Waiting for part 3. Take care Tina & Pat!~
Hi T&P.....once again, thank you for your RnR passion......it is great when we all click and share it. Your description was well in tune! The super geeks know how to approach a Stones record, and allow it to give a chance to breath for you. LOL, I am still doing that with the later albums, but they can not touch these, especially lyrically. I think that is why I shy away from them. Yea, Pt3......need a breather for now. best, steve
Dude, I’m a huge young stones fan, listening and learning about their catalog daily rn haha. These docs are truly life changing with all the history your giving us in such a fluent video. Appreciate all you do!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU!! Fav track off Goats Head gotta be 100 years or Hide Your Love. Please please do a doc about Tattoo U even though it’s all mainly old songs you probably mention in these prior docs. FlipsideCT is the best!! Gonna watch all your vids going forward. Thanks again! 🙏
thank you and a real pleasure to read this! You sound like a deep Stones fan, which is fantastic! I a glad you get my delivery here and with all others. I will eventually get to TYou. It is and has so much detail.
Hey Steve, Part two and you're just heating up here. Fantastic stuff. I didn't know about the cover, your information is very revealing. David Bailey photographing, had no idea. But the cover has never sat well with me, I could only ever think that the chiffon was along the lines of a bag with which to put the goat's head in when making the soup. The glam elements do fit in with the Mr D video though. I just love the 'what to listen for' commentary on each section, you can just tell you've lived this album many times before. I mean, you're pointing out moments where you can hear chewing gum in Keith's mouth!! But nothing seems to have diminished your love for the songs here, it only sounds like the outtakes and new mixes have only deepened your appreciation. So much to love here, Steve. The back story, the facts. I think you'll be winning a few folks over to your view, Steve. I'm one of them. Thank you. Cheers- Dean
LOL Dean....I am still waiting for our 3 day sit at a bar and shoot the shite. thank you.....for all and seeing the passion, and willing to jump on it! Very geeky stuff. As we know there are many more Beatles geeks then Stones....but I do not care to have a mono version so I hear an extra cymbal crash on a song or one line change. Got the new package yesterday and working on PT3....I am a bit surprised on the Remix (TBContinued). I did see about a jump of 40 subs lol, but I am more interested in getting folks to appreciate the album (like you said, win them over) more, and learn how to listen to The Stones. They are a science and not like any other. you are welcome....cheers steve
I like the Stones 1964 to 1981. I'm sure they've done some fine work since then. Hearing Satisfaction on the radio in 1964(?) was heaven. I like that "has anybody seen my baby" song.
I could only imagine Satisfaction blowing the doors off on the radio, so different for the times. The post 81' years albums do take some time.....lyrically and musically not as brilliant as the prior works.
When you go back and read some of the early reviews of the album they are pretty brutal. What's interesting is that they seem more critical of the Stones life of excess that they had sunk into, but not so much about the music. Of course critics were less than favourable about Abbey Road and Who's Next, two albums that have aged fairly well (tongue-in-cheek). GHS is chock full of brilliance. Excellent point about hearing through headphones. Its an album that demands of the listener to sink right into it. For example, listening to Winter this way never fails to take you away.
Yes, critics...so brutal and caught up on the wrong subject matter, exactly. What / who are exactly making them an expert, just because there were so few magazines and sources then, they felt they were the experts. I tie this topic in to how Keith really liked Andy Johns, because he was just not an engineer but a musician, and actually knew the subject matter and knew how and what was needed to bring their music to another level. One of the reasons why I like Julian Cope as a critic, respectively. I did not realize ARoad / Who;s Next got bad reviews. Oh my, really now! Unless someone has a killer system, headphones are just the way to go, especially initially to train the ear what to hear. oh yes, Winter makes you float!
YOU ARE WONDERING BASED ON OUR OPINION TO DO MORE??? ARE YOU KIDDING??? THIS IS A ABSOLUTE SLICE OF HEAVEN.. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO MORE!!! WE COULDNT BE SO LUCKY. YOU ARE THE BEST.. I LOVE YOUR WORK. I AM NOT KIDDING. NOTHING LIKE THIS. THANK YOU SO SO MUCH. I CANT GET ENOUGH!!!!!
cool Don...appreciate it! glad you are enjoying these. From a fan for the fans. I am sure you will check the others out. I was just fed up with the mediocracy of info out there.delivered to the public. However, having about 40 books on the Stones I felt I have enough material and know how to compile these. cheers
Beggars, LIB, Sticky, & Exile (68-72) have always been known as the most prolific period of the band. I’ve long thought though it should carry over to 73’ with GHS rounding out the Big 5. 100 years ago and Can you Hear the Music? being my favorites from this album. Such an underrated Stones album. Maybe my favorite album cover too.
It is so hard to even compare their music to anyone else. Which is what us Stones heads realize. I also had to spread the word about these other albums and keep them alive and more known. thanks for sharing.....!!
@@FlipSideCT you are so right! The Stones created so many different sounds that are completely different from anything I’ve ever heard. Truly the world’s greatest Rock n’ Roll band. Wish I could’ve seen them at their peak. Still the 7 times I’ve seen them have been awesome.
My Stonesian brother! Now I'm not going to get any sleep until Friday. Brilliant, Steve. Of course. I agree whole heartedly about head phones. GHS begs for them. My favourites are Winter, Hide Your Love and Can You Hear The Music. The layers are rich and beautiful. Have I told you my Winter story? If my deluxe is delayed and can't listen to it while watching part 3, well, you're just going to have to wait. Ha! You're a prophet illustrating a dimension of the Stones the average fan hasn't seen or heard. Loved every second. Your time and passion are greatly appreciated and applauded. Cheers!
Stones Bro.....you know how great it is for us to GEEK out. I was doing this with my buddies in the 70's / 80's, but since we all split up, it stopped. So this is fun for me...Coming from a musical / recording / video background it easy pretty much 2nd nature to do this....but so so so time consuming and focus needed to make it flow correctly. Please let me know your Winter story when ready! thanks for all appreciate those kind words....trying to be a disciple and spread the work correctly and look at this as a science. best steve
@@FlipSideCT Toronto rehearsals, 2002. A friend and I drove down to catch some ear candy and photographs. Hot summer nights; windows were open and you could hear them rehearsing - clear as day. What did we hear one night? Winter. Twice! I still don't think they've played it live. Unreal :)
@@Speekers_corner whoa....I do not believe they played it live. But you got 2 runs of it. nice. I just wonder what Kieth was playing? thanks for sharing.
Ah. GHS - My favourite Stones album. It's in my top ten of all time along with other greats like Quadrophenia and For Your Pleasure. I just love this album. I call it their 'groove album'. As you point out. Some of the songs were a bit 'samey' (is there such a word?) But Dancing With Mr D and Can You Hear The Music, Silver Train are all grooves. You could put them on as instrumentals and groove to them. It's not just the album but the times and memories that it stirs up. This and Black And Blue for me are those. It's the time. the moment. For example, I'm now 63. I know a young guy, about 22 who said to me - 'I know everything there is to know about The Doors'. I replied - 'We're you there and around the vibe at the time? Of course he said 'No'. I said 'Then you don't know even half of it.'
thanks for the sharing of your info. Any true Stones fan, has no issue at all with GHS. They moved along with their times and stayed relevant. We are very fortunate to have witnessed them in our lifetime. To see it is to feel it, for sure.
I was lucky enough to see them live at Wembley Stadium supported by The J geils Band and Black Uhuru (there through their association with P Tosh and Sly and Robbie when the Stones were in Jamaica. The JG Band were on second and were absolutely terrible. Two songs and off. Black Uhuru opened, did a cracking hour in the rain and left the stage to cheers. Some of the pics in the conccert program are superbWish I could take shots and send them@@FlipSideCT
appreciated, and glad you commented, thanks! I watched someone on YT comparing this album and B&B or IORR to see which was worse. That started my WTF thinking, to teach how and why as some folks just do not get it.
nice Jim, thanks for sharing....wanted to all of us to get closer to them as there are so many missing piences. B&B PT3 was just posted today, so enjoy that long series.
Great stuff amigo I like Do do do it was a true story, right? I love all the mono stuff on the new collections and all the B sides of the 45’s too. I remember asking my parents for a stereo for Christmas in 66 and getting Flowers as my first stereo Lo.
my copy of the previous remix was stolen unfortunately. This album overlooked definitely.I have it re ordered along with the first and new barbarians stuff. my 2nd watch of this. I can feel your passion for the stones man. Thanks
It is a gem, and puts me back to my times of first hearing it in '75 as a 15 year old.....and remembering how far away the Stones were from me, except for their music. Glad you are enjoying and getting something out of the docs. I can not see why not! thanks!!!
This is an incredible series. I'm a Stones fanatic too. One of those people who have numerous configurations of commerce released product . Vinyl, CD, DVD , BluRay, and bosses galore. By 1989 it was all Swingin' Pig leading of course to Vinyl Gang, Dog and Cat , No label ect. I think you get the idea. Of course all this collecting calls in front of a back drop of numerous concerts. P!ease carry on with your work . We can't thank you enough !!!!
Way to go Jimmy, great to meet up with a Stones Head! thank you! I always wanted to ooh and ahhh someones collection! Trying to spread the word the best I can......and eliminate some of the doubters. Working on PT3 now.....just winged it! cheers Steve
Your up close, intimate, meticulously detailed,no stone left unturned (pardon the pun)modis operandi quite literally places those fortunate enough to enjoy this adventure right in there as if a member of the entourage and I can't express my respect, appreciation and gratitude enough for your efforts.I applaud you sir.magnificante'
Hi LM, I thought I commented on this....but guess I did not. Thank you for those kind words and your support. Greatly appreciated, and I am glad to give this to the Stones Family. I felt there are many that did not know or realize how much info was behind this. Also, I am fed up with the 'bad mouth' folks of this album. Just not fans. cheers
Goats Head Soup is a very brilliantly calculated album for the Stones in 1973. It seems usually the first three years of a decade are still a bit of a hangover from the previous decade. It’s usually by the fourth year, in this case 1973, that real serious change is in the air. Stones was the situation the stones found themselves in after closing out a five year stretch which found them at the summit of rock ‘n’ roll stardom the previous year with the release of Exile On Main Street in 1972. But the music scene was changing, and they needed to do something different, yet nothing too drastically different just yet. So…..do a showcase album! An album that has some thing for everybody. And in this Goats Head Soup delivers. Here we find psychedelic forays, acid rock boogie, tender ballads, piano driven tunes, sweeping majestic compositions, funk, boogie-woofer, dark blues, folky blues, raunchy rock, and one enormously popular provincial acoustic masterpiece reminiscent of their best stuff from the 60s. So it was bound to be a popular album - which it is. But also not singular enough in focus to become the kind of huge masterpiece that the previous few albums had been. Overall though it is an encouraging album as it signaled that the Stones would roll with the times and therefore likely give us a lot more interesting, even adventurous, music in the years to come. Which they did. And maybe even another masterpiece or two along the way as well. Which they also have done. So yes this album was an album that signifies sharp stylistic change, much like Aftermath, or Beggars Banquet, or Undercover. And the purists who deride this album need to lighten up or at least give it a revisit if it’s been a while.
ok, well said. A reason why I made these, to shut the doubters who just complain and talk how this or IORR is their worst....got tired of that shit and needed to clear the air and put it out there for many others to know the Stones greatness. No Stones fan should deny any of their albums, you just say you listen to one more then the other.
ur review is up on the top level, as of today, all other reviews are all under urs. All stones albums do grow on me even the Dirty Work album, thats how it works in the minds of stones fanatics like us, Cheers mate.
@@TheRollingStoness a very warm and fuzzy comment!! so well appreciated! As my goal is to provide doubters of this album why and how they need to look at differently. I was doing this with my buddies in the 70's / 80's, but since we all split up, it stopped. So this is fun for me, and to geek with others. I know there are SUPER geeks out there, and know much more then me. Growing up the Stones, they were so far away from us as mortals, it is great to share now...and......now realizing how real and human they are...lol, Keith now lives 2 towns away from me. I do not know the answer to your question.....and did not even realize that. good topic! Agree.....with the Dirty Work......and the later albums.......the 2 issues I have with them is lyrically they are sub par to what we knew they could do. Also, I think they are trying to hard.....they need to go back to basics of simple recordings and not overproduced. cheers my friend! steve
@@FlipSideCT always looking fwd to all ur reviews, not just the stones, please do the Darryl Jones Era review, which seems to be glittery and vegas style no media idolization for a bassist
@@TheRollingStoness As we know their Darryl albums are lower key. Bigger Bang got the most hype as being closet to the older era. I would like to compile the songs I think stand out from the albums all the way back to Steel Wheels as they do not get the glam. That is a very good idea!! I honestly never focused on Daryl as much, but know he is a Stone for a reason. would make fun research.
Awww New Jersey That’s the voice . I love it !!!!!! Perfect for this somehow . We can learn a lot more by watching this series of videos . I’ve read that Keith wrote Angie in a hotel after going cold turkey for 72 hours . I think I read that in his book LIFE . These people ( who lived and were still creative and productive ) kept trying to clean up once in a while didn’t they ?
thanks... sharing the knowledge is what it is about. Keith was in a clinic for writing of Angie....I did talk about it. but not sure where. PT2 was removed by a Production company for claim copy rights.
I'm with you about it being a headphone listen, Steve. I'm a bit of headphone junkie anyway, and there's so much detail in this record, I'm always hearing new things, and there'll be even more now that you've pointed out various elements like mic leaks and such. There's a gorgeous deep bass part in Mr D which sounds like it could be Preston on Clavinet. I first heard the album at Uni, my first year, winter '79, and played Winter obsessively as it was mine I my then girlfriend's song - it still has a romance to it, a very optimistic song, I feel. I love Silver Train! Just that 'Oh yeah..' does it, so simple it's genius, and how Mick delivers it with such swagger - his vocal just grows and revs in this. Great work Steve! Cheers, Ian
To a gentlemen that gets it all....thank you! Love the geekiness in you! It is such a high level of RnR genius....that I wished more would understand and appreciate!! cheers my friend! steve
The lp track Hide Your Love is great but the alternate on the SD version is SO much better. More MT and Nicky is now on piano. It's like the studio track is the raw form of the alternate. Nicky and MT absolutely bring it!!! I think if you are a true fan you can recognize immediately it's far from a "weak track". Brilliant.
Anyone that can not appreciate this tune, is not a DEEP FAN to me. Off the mainstream flow for sure, and not a simple model song at all. Has plenty of depth and uniqueness that makes us love it.
Hi Steve. Another great video. When it was released reviews said it wasn’t as good as the album before. That seemed to happen to all their seventies albums. I tend to fall in and out of love with it. Never liked the sleeve though. Would rather all the Stones together on the sleeves. Mick Taylor, magnificent as usual. Looking forward to part three.
Thanks Stephen. critics....what can we say. Stones albums need 3-4 listens initially to get figure it out. Satantic had all of them on the cover, and then the next one was Dirty Work. I agree....all or nothing. I will keep on saying, the Brussels Affair is bone chilling and hair standing wonderful. I did not get the album delivered yet. But did hear the outtakes which are wonderful. cheers, steve
I love this project you've put together on these albums but the question that keeps entertaining my mind is who are you to them? That they've granted you such access without lawsuits. This is great! Thank you!
thanks so much for your comments and loving this DIY project I did. Just a fan, like so many of us. As long as I do not collect any monetary funds, I can keep it going as is. TH-cam is just flagging these as issues, but there are no complaints from owners of music. thankfully. It is my voice that is the majority of the videos sound, so it works. Black and Blue is now work in progress. cheers
Amazing album. Compositions, Charlie on fire, session players, Keith walking the razors edge as usual. Mick in top form as usual. Bill just being superb. Nicky Hopkins (say no more). Great doco. As good as I’ve seen and unique.
Steve, your in depth review videos are fabulous! . . well researched, presented, etc. FWIW, I give two thumbs up for more of these. . . on a different subject, years ago you did a video from new England Jukebox in Vernon CT. . . i commented that I live down the road and have spent many hours and $s there. . . at the time, you had your eyes on a Marantz receiver they had. . .FYI, i was there today, buying records, and they have a 2230 and a SL1000 Marantz receivers. . . if you are still looking. stay well
Thank you!! glad to deliver it and hear you enjoyed it. sure Charles, I recall. At this point, I need another turntable and needle. That is why I wished I spent back then on that Marantz. thanks for looking out.
Just finished watching the first two parts of the making of Goats Head Soup. What a fascinating story! I always had wondered why the Stones recorded it in Jamaica. I had thought they simply decided it was a cool place to record at the time. Never did I know it was selected by a quasi-process of elimination, since their residence was banned in a number of countries. My two fav songs from this LP are the singles, natch. They are both on a playlist I work out to. The discussion about the LP cover art was most interesting as well. And the final shot from this second part about Mick Jagger Soup: I caught it right at the end, before the video fade-out. Reminds me of one of those prints from the Rorschach test, where it’s possible to interpret more than one thing. 👍
thanks Kevin. great that you can enjoy this. An album that is a must like. I can not call a person a Stones fan if they have an issue with this album. It has a great back story as you point out. I am so glad to have made this and prove the greatness! cheers
Great content bro. I watched it 3 times in one day. You should be working 4 rolling Stone magazine 🤟goats head " grew " into my favourite album by the glimmer twins. Even over such classic s as let it bleed and exile tbh.take care Stone lovers🇦🇺🇺🇲🇨🇦
thanks DT....appreciate your comments and letting me know. maybe one day someone will pick me up, but till then I love to share and 'turn on'. cool that GHS is your top. utter brilliance!
Man, I am glad I found your channel. A great review video, suffused with love for the finest band I have ever heard. For what it's worth, I'm a guitar player and would bet at least one guitar the Angie intro was Keith. We know what kind of acoustic player he is, and the intro is his tough, strong playing style thru and thru. I love GHS, but not so much the production on certain tracks, which I have always thought was overdone, and which rightly or wrongly I attribute to Keith having been MIA for much of the production work. Oh, and the cover sucks - the goat's head in the pot would have been great!
thanks Zile fn.....glad you commented and enjoy. Some folks get my work and what I present, and some are just not in sync. Yes, Keith was MIA, and surprisingly not in Winter. The Business folks surely would not go for the Goat cover....but we would have!! thanks...
Love this album. There is just so much depth, craft, and atmosphere to it amongst its warm and murky production. It's perfect for this time of the year of November. It's so 70s and evokes that era so well that even though I didn't exist until '75, I can see and feel the rooms with wood paneling, short-neck beer bottles and smoke-filled air. This bonus release, recent interviews, and the extended sessions proved keith was more involved than what has been believed for decades. For example revealing he intially came up with heartbreaker... Though Dancing with Mr. D is indeed repetitious, that is part of its draw...that infectious groove, marching beat, keith's sinewy guitar riff, and the chanting Dancin' Dancin'. A thought on Micks lyrics and delivery on it...I wonder if Alice Cooper had an influence on his writing here. In regards to Hide Your Love. back in the early to late 80s, a popular radio station out of Detroit used to play that one all the time for some reason. So around here (southern Ontario) it was an Fm staple. I could go through it all these tunes again myself, just out of my own love for it, but you nailed many of the great aspects of it all. Incidentally, I still prefer the original Miller production ovrr the new mix.
Nicely said. So the only thing we have left as a question is, WHY? Why the dislike with this album with so many. It burned me up when I watched this one video of someone pointing out which album is worse IORR or GHS. Turned me stomach.
@@FlipSideCT Yeah. I guess it was just outside of what the Stones should sound like for some and not given a chance properly by others. Music is best enjoyed when knowing to match your own mood and energy. This one is a little less immediate and more layered maybe for most type of Stones fans. I dunno.
I agree on your songs summation. I heard Silver Train by Johnny Winter before the Stones original. "Feeling Hungry ........ Ain't No Crime" ....... a line that got me a lot of top drawer girls. My first Stones show was Seattle in '72. Saw ZZ Top open up for Leon Russell. ZZ were beardless!
Your comment about them laying down when the photos taken is correct. Somewhere I saw other photos from that session and it does show them lying on their backs on whatever the background was. I think the photographer actually stood of them to take the pictures. I'm sure you could find these photos if you googled Goat's head soup photo sessions" but ,I'm not sure if that's how I found it.
DME, well us crunchy guitar RnR lovers would want more. I would agree. That is why I dived into more of MTaylor's other works. Will show an album I recently got. cheers steve
Another great job! I always used to say Goat's Head Soup was my least favorite Stones album, mostly because I think it took a lot of years for them to release a version that didn't sound like mud. The Virgin 94 reissue really brought those roller coaster screams to life and also made it so you could really hear the pianos and some of the more atmospheric stuff going on. It helped to change my mind. I can understand where the people that think another fast song would make it better, but I don't know which slow song I'd drop. I'm really looking forward to the new boxed set. I hope the delivery guy gets it to the store on Friday! You've definitely helped get my interest level up for this release!
Perfect Rick...cool! Very pleased to hear I assisted in the listening pleasure!! The Stones are a science. I never heard mudiness myself.....and accepted it. ....I never expanded on other versions and thinking or knowing the sounds would be better. So interesting topic and mention here. I did buy the Japanese version a few years hoping I would hear more, but not much difference. Virgin 94 release....wow....nice to know that. Right, nothing should be dropped. Fast songs...hmmm....I take it they do not care for Neil Young then. LOL, I am hoping they send it a day early......Brussels Affair is my main focus. Not sure if you know much about it but......if not, you are in for a TOP level experience. cheers steve
@@FlipSideCT I'm very familiar with several of the Brussels boots. I've wanted to hear this official release on vinyl since they did the download version of it a while back. It's way overpriced, but they'll get me on this one. As much as I like this, I like some of the Australian and New Zealand 73 stuff as much as this. I'd love to see an official vinyl version of some of that stuff. I should actually have some time to myself this weekend, so I'll be making the amplifier hot with this for sure. The GHS songs are really great live. The first time I heard Angie with electric guitars...man that was life changing!
lol DS, appreciate it! yes, well dedicated, and there is no one else like them. I do have passion with many other bands as my channel displays. But need to spread the RnR word! TY steve

British Bulldog, totally agree with you about automobile travel listening! I too enjoy this album on long trips. My dashboard always turns into an "air piano"!
it is cool to reminisce about how songs connect us to those good times. The power of music and The Stones! Well at least we say they were good times now.
@@FlipSideCT I've been a HUGE, lifelong fan of The Rolling Stones and I have to say, this is my all time FAVORITE song! Also, I believe it is really a cry out to Bianca, and Mick's last ditch effort to keep their relationship going. "And I wish I been out in Stony Canyon" (their rented house is Bel Air, CA) You decide....Love ALL of your docs @flipsideCT...keep it up!
To each their own, but 100 Years Ago thru and thru is killer track. One of my faves of all time.
MT is lighting it up on the instrumental jam Very cool
Taylor's jam is magical and ripping great!
Yep
So tru bro , so fuckn tru 🙏🇦🇺
Maybe the best Stones track.
I am absolutely fascinated by all the behind the scenes information you provide. I have also watched your Let it Bleed documentary another brilliant piece of work. Thank you for providing such amazing works.
sorry JC, just seeing this. Thank you for the kind words. Glad you got something out of these. It proves you have RnR in your blood!! cheers steve
@@FlipSideCT That would be fun ! Cindy
A drink of belladonna on a Toussaint night. No one will ever write lyrics like this ever again. Utterly brilliant.
just saw this.....exactly.....this time period lyrics are matched to the music as 'can not be touched'. nice
Ahhh greed
They had so much external and self induced internal trauma, this was the real deal of the RnR life, and this was the child they created, like you say, powerful! best, steve
Never ceases to amaze me how good your videos are. You are doing such a great job!
making me smile MM!! thank you! so cool that you click in with the videos!
KILLER!!!! What a great overview ! Far and beyond any others. Cool cool insight and info, love your take on this! Now everyone should get an appreciation of this album. Love that white SG Keith played live. Mick and Mick tear it up! Can not wait for Brussels Affair!!
What can I say, you know the Stones!! TY! That SG is gorgeous and I am not a fan of it.
I think GHS is a splendid album - especially in terms of production.
Thanks a lot for explaining it in such a detailed manner.
Glad you got something out of it Andy. As you can see I do these documentaries on some Stones albums.
This is my favorite album from this period. Probably cos I remember having the lp in high school.
good to hear that....my HS albums were B&B and SG
Im loving what you are doing here man. I too am a huge fan of the Taylor era Stones. The detail you put into these videos shows your deep love, and that's extremely important.
thank you Andrew. Coming from a true fan made for the true fan. Taylor era was the guitar period filled with melody. glad you enjoyed!
@@FlipSideCT ...and you respond quickly and personally! Now THAT'S how you get a loyal fanbase. Im 49, so i grew up with Woody, but as soon as I heard "Exile On Main Street" at around 18, i knew there was something special about Taylor.

Thanks Charles, appreciate the watch and sub and enjoy the RnR!
This album has grown on me over the years and definitely has a dark, dank, comedown vibe that is all it’s own in the Stone’s catalog. The strings on Angie, Winter, and Coming Down Again are beautiful.
so true.....a more esoteric sound. utter brilliance, and music a real Stones fan appreciates. thanks for sharing.
Never understood the criticism of this album...it's one of my favorites by the Stones.
most of don't understand why, that is why we say they can not be fans. Brilliance, no other band can even come close to it.
I'd forgotten about Coming Down Again, what a great song. Also N Hopkins getting praise he deserves here
Most of the general public does not know, so I needed to do what I can to bring Nicky to public eye. I wished his solo work was as good as his session for others.
Nice review of a great record. I saw the stones on the 73’ tour here in Manchester , U.K. I was 13. Still love this record 💫
thanks for sharing Paul....73' peak time! jealous! can never get tired of that album
You lucky bastard. My fave Stones year.
Thank you for putting all these videos together, they are like gold for serious Stones fans. Great job.
a pleasure CEA....I know we the fans needed something better to bring us closer to them and get a good background. I was also fed up with hearing folks put down albums and just not get what they are about. hope you check out the others. thanks
The studio version of Star Star has an incredible dual lead during the break. I love the transition from Keith to Mick Taylor.
This is just saw raw and brilliant!!!
Like you said, this time period was the "Perfect Storm" for the Stones and their music. Amazing how they survived all of the turbulent times. I love how Mick Jagger doesn't take any shit from anyone. Bianca exposed Mick to the finer side of life, and he took this to the next level of class. Thank you again for your work on these docs.
so glad you can get the point I make in presenting these...cool. thanks for your support and appreciated comments.
Clapton actually asked to be a Stone, but they said NO you're your own man. - So I've heard.
Thanks again so much for an amazing trip into this fantastic music and the beautiful way you narrate it 🙏🏻❤
a pleasure Oliver, thank you for letting me know, and real glad you enjoyed the trip and the presentation I gave. A lot of prep went to this, and glad when folks like yourself appreciate it!!

AWESOME DOCUMENTARY STEVE 😊😁😁 GREAT EDITING & NARRATION 💖
thank you so much DM.....had to expose this great album. !!!
Winter is my all-time favorite DEEP Stones cut. Jivin' Sister Fanny, Child of the Moon, Luxury and Tops round out the top five. Great video once again.
They are a Desert island collection for sure! nice!! All unique
Really glad I found your channel especially as you have done B&B as well as GHS two of my favourite Stones albums.
thank you !!! glad you can appreciate the so called 'non popular' albums.
Stones, and all RnR is meant to be played loud and clear, and to understand what the artist did in the studio. thanks for getting it! appreciated
You're hittin' it outa the park, sir. Can't wait for part 3! Thank you.
thank you very much Ralph. So glad you watched and are a Stones head! cheers
My personal favorite is Winter probably the sister to Moonlight Mile . Those haunted guitar chords played by Mick Jagger? And Mick Taylor 's fat gorgeous lead tones . Just sublime its a pity Keith wasn't on it
Mick also played guitar on Moonlight Mile funnily enough.
I ALWAYS loved "100 Years Ago"...from the first time I heard it.
a strange song when I first heard it, it took many deep listens as the beginning always threw me.
My first Stones album when I was 14.
Bought on the back of Angie.
It's a great album and should be included in the "great run" of albums.
we totally agree, and that tells me you do get it! so many folks / so called fans turn it down,. There is absolutely no reason to, if you are a TRUE fan! thanks for sharing

Good morning Steve. I watched some of this last night and the other half this morning. Man you did a spectacular job with it. I don't think you arr going to find a better overall three part Goats Head Soup breakdown/review of the box set on the Internet. I believe that there is something for everyone on the album. I love how you detailed the tracks. What research. Where they were recorded. When and what they were about. 38:08 Charlie always looked like he did not like to shoot videos to promote the songs. But you could tell that he was all in. He loves playing with the band. The clips. Man oh man. I am always amazed at the clips that you find because there are so many that I have never seen before. They also fit in perfectly to whatever album or time period of the band that you are talking about. I did not know about the censoring of Star Star. Get permission from the man himself Steve McQueen to release the line was pure brilliance. Also very cool of him to let them do so. Who wouldn't want to be named in a Stones song? I give them permission right now to use my name in any upcoming song. {smile}
Superb job all around Steve. Looking forward to part three~

cheers my RnR bro....I just love it when I can geek out.
Botton line it was cool to see them experiment
Mind blowing album. This is and IORR are the albums that I got so fed up with folks bashing. I could not believe it, but then came to conclusion they are NOT STONES fans as many of are much deeper. So decided to expose this and teach folks what they are missing. If they still don't get it.....then, get off my cloud! glad you get it! I think I break down the song more with what is on it.
Really nice video! Goat's Head is one of my Top 3 Stones albums along with the previous 2 with Mick Taylor who provided a big boost and leap in technical quality
thank you MB for watching and chiming in. Glad to see you are a Stones fan. Yes, Taylor contributed to the greatness.
The section starting with the " 100 Years Ago " jam in the background is really good. Thanks.
thanks for sharing Pat. nice to pick up on it.
@@FlipSideCT My man! All the best 🤟
Another incredible video - of my 3rd favorite Stones album of all time. Fantastic.
thanks Alan!!! Just brilliance all around!
@@FlipSideCT It sure is.
@@FlipSideCT - Has anybody seen my Angelina...
Most music critics don't know anything about music, so they just talk about musicians instead...
However, having about 40 books on the Stones I felt I have enough material and know how to compile these. cheers

glad you are a Stones fan and can appreciate it all. thanks!!
This review was excellent. Always thought GHS was underrated. Hard for the stones to follow up on Exile, but I love this album.
Thanks for what you do
appreciated, and glad you commented, thanks! I watched someone on YT comparing this album and B&B or IORR to see which was worse. That started my WTF thinking, to teach how and why as some folks just do not get it.

Winter DOES remind me a lot of Midnight Mile! A very beautiful song!!
the disturbing commonality of the 2 songs, no Keith.
my copy of the previous remix was stolen unfortunately.
I can not see why not! thanks!!!

Much appreciated CM.....glad you enjoyed!! sorry so late with this just saw it now.
Great documentary. 100 years ago. My fav albun track
TY, totally a strange one hearing it in the 70's, but took time to appreciate it....that is why I had to share this!!
ur review is up on the top level, as of today, all other reviews are all under urs. All stones albums do grow on me even the Dirty Work album, thats how it works in the minds of stones fanatics like us, Cheers mate.
do you why they drop the word "the" in some albums? let it bleed was the first LP with no "the"
@@TheRollingStoness a very warm and fuzzy comment!! so well appreciated!
Awww New Jersey
That’s the voice .
It is such a high level of RnR genius....that I wished more would understand and appreciate!! cheers my friend! steve
Winter is great ! I also really like the Taylor/ Olson version very much. Again another great documentary , Many thanks !
thanks Paul. check out my #182 vinyl finds....
Love that track! It does create such a cold and chilling feeling! Hard to imagine they created this in hot, sunny Jamaica!
Thanks Steve. Part 1 was great, and this kept it going. - Chris

But did hear the outtakes which are wonderful. cheers, steve

thanks so much for your comments and loving this DIY project I did. Just a fan, like so many of us. As long as I do not collect any monetary funds, I can keep it going as is. TH-cam is just flagging these as issues, but there are no complaints from owners of music. thankfully. It is my voice that is the majority of the videos sound, so it works. Black and Blue is now work in progress. cheers

Glad you enjoy it! Thanks so much Jamie, very cool that you are in sync with me. more coming.
I am so glad to have made this and prove the greatness! cheers

Mick Taylor with the Stones, flawless. I just wish there were more solos, and that some were louder in the mix. Mind-blowingly brilliant!

Yes always felt my original album was very dense sounding
Amazing detailed account of the Stones! You sound like a true loving fan! You the man!
lol DS, appreciate it! yes, well dedicated, and there is no one else like them. I do have passion with many other bands as my channel displays. But need to spread the RnR word! TY steve
@@FlipSideCT I'd like to see you continue on "its only rock n roll" album, the mick taylor fallout, replacement search, ronnie getting it, black n blue, some girls, emotional rescue up through tatoo you!
@@DaveGoldShow There is a doc on IORR....guess you missed it. Black and Blue is work in progress....one at a time....I have also have Kitchen cabinets to refinish and a family room to paint.
@@FlipSideCT What's IORR? No problem dude! I just give you many a platitude! Don't want to come across rude! I just love that Stones food!
@@DaveGoldShow it's only rock and roll
Star ,star alone makes this album essential. Another piece of 70 s that made it the best time 2 b alive ever
sends friggin chiils up my back. A tune we would crank before playing football!!
I totally agree with you on this album. It's my go to album when driving in my car. Of course played loud.
Very different then any other one. I honestly do not think when played at a low volume the beauty of their music being played. TY, keep on watching the others. Black and Blue is in progress.
British Bulldog, totally agree with you about automobile travel listening! I too enjoy this album on long trips. My dashboard always turns into an "air piano"!
Winter, ultimate ballad. Mid 70s, Remember playing this many times with my girl, 8 track, old Chevy. Youth is a wonderful thing
it is cool to reminisce about how songs connect us to those good times.
