Black and Blue is one of the most under rated Stones' albums. One of my favorites.
I can not think any thing different from a Stones fan. thanks
I think people just pan it because everyone else does. You can't tell me Emotional Rescue, Undercover, and Dirty Work, are anywhere near the quality. B+B is also better than It's Only Rock'n'Roll, which is an average record.
These Stones documentaries are amazing. I can't stop watching them (or listening to the Stones).

I absolutely loved Memory Motel and still do! It was my favorite song on Black and Blue! The Stones were the soundtrack of my life and I have followed their careers intensly and closely my entire life and that's probably why I ended up the way I did but nothing ever gave me as much joy and happiness as listening to, watching and reading about the Stones! My boys, my band since 1970 so thank you for this wonderful presentation!! 👍❤️

Billy Preston first met and played with the Rolling stones back in 1965 on the set of the TV show Shindig. Sometime in the early 200's I went to a Beatles record convention. Billy was one of the guest talking with fans. I asked him about the Shindig TV show and his meeting the Stones. He said, "How did you know that?" I told him I recognized him while watching the episode of him playing with the Stones. He wanted to know how I saw it. I told him it was on something called TH-cam. He said, "how can I see it?" I explained, he was grateful.

Steve as a Stones fan for 46yrs it is with complete joy that I now have the opportunity to check this amazing compilation you’ve so beautifully put together. When the naysayers blasted and put the Stones down and out with the release of B/A/B my top 2 thank God they were all wrong. I feel that Billy didn’t get the due he deserved but that’s the ‘political’ side of the Stones I’m not too hip about. I now know a whole new side to the Rolling Stones I never knew and it’s thanks to you…
Nice John, you started when I did. 75' I was 14....and this was earth shattering great, as I was exposed to the rocking songs prior. Yea, those critics were not liked. That is why in Love You Live you hear Mick say at the El Mocombo Club, "everything alright in the critic section where a penny's a drink".....his way of saying F U. The Stones great 'groove' album and i think is still underrated in the band's catalogue. Fantastic start as usual and can't wait for part 2. Another gem in the making....very well done Steve!!!

Thanks so much for this Steve. It's amazing what you're doing for us Stones fans and to bring new fans into the fold. Black & Blue is probably my favourite Stones album. It was the first one I ever bought in 1976 when I was 13 and living in The Hague in Holland. I didn't know much about the Stones at the time but felt drawn to them and was attracted by how cool they look on the cover. I can still visualise myself listening to the album in my bedroom in the apartment I lived in with my mother. It's a great album and it's so good to have you increasing our understanding of what was going on at the time. I hope all the hard work you have done for us with your music documentaries comes back to you 1,000 times. Cheers Steve.
made me smile here SJ....great comment. It is rewarding for me to hear and see that other STONES fans are getting something from this. A formulated doc that we were always in need of. I totally get the visual you have. I have the same type of experience in 75' in my friends bedroom when I was 14 or when we used to hang out in our park as a gang (All Stones fans), listening to my portable tape player back then. Very personal and deep connections we had.....and what is embedded in us forever when we hear the Stones, brings us to some times we never thought of as special back then. liked your sharing of that!! comments like these makes it going for me! cheers steve
@@FlipSideCT Thanks Steve. Appreciate you taking the time to reply. I'm going to share another special memory if you don't mind and it's a lot more recent. I've seen the Stones four times. The last two times were in 2018. The last gig was in Twickenham Rugby Stadium in London which is about 150 miles away from where I live. As it was on a Tuesday, there was no way I was going to be able to travel there after work to get there in time and I knew I wouldn't be able to drive back afterwards so I arranged to stay with friends. I rang in sick on the Tuesday morning and drove to London. We had an amazing day that I can remember like it was yesterday. Opening with Street Fighting Man, the extended encore vamp on Satisfaction and the girl next to me who shared her spliff will always be with me. I wouldn't normally call in sick unless I really am ill but this was one occasion I have no regrets. The Stones moved onto mainland Europe next. Given the state of the world recently and the Stones' age, I sometimes wonder if that was the last time they ever played England. I hope not but, whatever, I am so glad I was there.

@@FlipSideCT ; I like ya' line about you/ friends hangin' out in a bedroom, all Stones fans. I'm 56 now but that's exactly how it was with me/ my mates here in Melbourne, Australia. Still a huge fan, lounge room surrounded with rare tour posters from '69-81 or so (Aussie tour '73 poster - with ticket stub !! - a pride of sorts).

Black and Blue was the 1st album i started listening to,i was 9 or 10 yrs old.My sisters boyfriend was a huge fan of the band.Ill never forget the way he mimicked Jaggers moves and lyrics when Hey Negrita came on.We played horseshoe's and listened to this album all through the summer of 1977.I became an exclusive fan of the Stones that summer.I dont remember listening to anyone else except John Prines PRIME PRINE between BnB that entire summer. That summer led me to the 69 to 75 era with Mick Taylor,i was blown away with Taylors lead guitar.45 yrs later i still absolutely love BnB.Goats Head Soup is probably my next fav album(if its possible to have a fav). Im also 45yrs later still listening to John Prine. Thanks Jim McQuade for exposing me to fantastic music at such a young age.

Yep... Jagger was amazing on B&B... I've always loved this album! It's crackin with groove and was so well recorded. Loved Ronnie Wood's contributions as well... no wonder he got the gig.

As usual you killed it brother! Love that you credited Billy Preston and Nikki Hopkins for their amazing contributions. In my mind, their musicianship carried the Stones through the 70’s. Songs like 100 Years Ago and Heartbreaker are all Billy in terms of groove. And groove is EVERYTHING. One of the things Jimmy Miller emphasized so much and made sure was strong in songs he produced, as you well know.
The big surprise for me here and something you included a beautiful section to in this video was Perkins! I loved the fills he did on pedal steel but had no idea his history or what a powerhouse he was. The part with Bob Marley had me on the floor laughing and learning and relating! Where’s the 1 man!? 😂

Very nice to read this and share. Glad that you can appreciate the work I put into this and who and what is presented. I take plenty of pride doing this to make sure we get the biggest picture we can to understand the greatness they accomplish. They brought out brilliance in Nicky for sure. I would have to believe they did not direct him much.

Thanks so much for the documentary, great job. Sure do miss the raw, crunching and pure rocking tone that Keith had back then. He lost that around 1980 and it's been less violent since then, I really loved that fat sound.

Beginning of what would turn out to be the incredible forte crescendo final run of killer studio albums. She drove a pickup truck,painted green and blue. So tragic that I never did find that girl, but it’s a great track off Black and Blue side Two I believe anyone got it to check

really looking forward to part 2. It is so great to be able to explore the history and surroundings of these amazing recordings, Black and Blue has always been one of my most played Stones albums, it always sounds fresh to me.. and some funky grooves.

He auditioned and played the next day at MSG. So the Stones knew him already. He was active with Billy during B&B timeframe. cheers

A Stones fans wet dream, this production is! Detailed with marvelous minutè around every turn, I learned more about this slice in time for the Stones, than all previous knowledge combined! A hearty and excellent thumbs up for the production, which is simple, yet chock full of info Stones fans live and die for! Just spectacular in it's simplicity, and infinite in it's inclusion of that period in time! Congrats, my friend, and much solids on ya!

@@FlipSideCT Boy, do I remember reading the critics slag off on this album. As a kid, I bought it with some trepidation. But that year, I think I played out both "Black and Blue" and the Ramones first album...both those albums were pretty much not taken too seriously by a lot of critics.
@@chuckengley9199 Yeah. it was slammed. Critics as we know hated Exile....it was hard not to hear the negative. But real Stones fans knew it took several listens to realize the power it does contain. They expected rocker songs....not this time. Some Girls proved it was always there. Ah the Ramones, dont recall the critics, but can imagine. Just like Iggy and The Dolls. Some folks just get it, some just don't. We know there are albums that are just unlistenable, but someone will like it. I always look at Bowie's Tin Machine. I can not listen to 1 note.

Sooooooo good! Went back to watch this and the second before I go to the third installment of the black and blue he just released today. I love these videos so much- I love how his voice is slow and chill/ it really lets you enjoy the experience instead of just a documentary that gets run through just for information. Steve you have a great narration style backed up with major super footage and info. Don't sell yourself short and don't be fixated on the Trolls of the World. Remember, It's Only Rock N Roll! LOL!

Congratulations Steve for being so accurate and bringing all the background stories. Probably the most underrated album but the most illustrative of the Stones versatility. I recall like yesterday buying it, my first ever rock vinyl at age 12 in 1976! Learned the guitar playing endless nights over it, still trying to get some of thr licks right today….Summer of 76 was the heatwave of the century in france when B&B came out and the Stones gave their historical concerts several days in a row in Paris, mostly based on the B&B album, introducing Ronnie and having Billy Preston on stage with the not so correct giant inflatable penis on stage. It would be captured in the incredible Love you Live album released afterwards. Punk rock was booming, reggae in full fashion , disco about to emerge and it was the turn of all genres starting to mix. B&B was just the precursor of what was to follow. Afterwards the Stones music was in full transformation but it was still the Glimmer twins style and magic at work. Hand of Fate is probably the quintessence of rock and roll with Wayne Perkins nailing (one of?) the best solos ever recorded. Ronnie was probably a more natural choice to blend in, let’s not rethink history... You highlighted really well the parallel courses of the Stones, Rod Stewart, and the Faces that influenced each other a lot at the time. Absolutely noteworthy for part 2 if I may, is the incredible artwork by photographer Hiro on the B&B cover, and the absolutely unbelievable ( by today’s standard) teaser video with a naked girl hanging in chains. A real piece of rock n roll history for the next generation of Stones fans that discovered them at that time.

Mick's voice is pure brilliant and throw in everything else. We would also jam plenty to Love you Live and feel that power. Hopefully you were eventually introduced to the open tuning....it took us about 5 years when a friend of ours in a touring Stones Cover band turned us on. Will never forget how he got so tired of us picking his brain. Yea, Ronnie was a no brainer and perfect as a Stone. Yes, I will be getting to the album release, my breakdown of the songs the cover shoot and the controversy/billboard etc. But I still can not find out why Hiro chose that location. I do not know much of his post work, but his earlier work is great. I think he lives on West Coast and does every type of event he can make money on, even Weddings. Check out his website.

Hi Rob, glad you picked up on all, and not surprised. I do have a great book on the gear the Stones used for each session, and tour so that is easy to get. That was interesting to hear Keith say that about Mick Taylor's wife Rose.....she was hanging out with them a lot prior. There are session outtakes as I showed......but not much with the others. Yes, definitely some good stories. Wayne lived around the corner from me for about a year in Florence. I played bass and am a huge Stones fan. I was about 21 years old. Wayne only had three pieces of furniture - a chair, couch and coffee table with a platinum black and blue album on the wall he was awarded from the stones. We played together a bit and he was looking for the next big gig. He got a call from Joe Walsh and took off for Memphis, if I remember correctly, and I've never had occasion to see him again. He was/is a lovely personality.

The Rolling Stones, Mick in particular, had always sought to emulate what was perceived to be popular or trendy, whether that was Beatlesque pop, psychedelia, glam, funk, disco, or punk. I contend that the reason for the stones “golden era” from 1968 to 1972 was the fact that a “back to basics” musical approach was very trendy during that time period, which played to the Stones’ natural strengths.
I take it you are not a pure Stones fan. Alright then. This doc is meant to enlighten and bring to attention their environment and what they accomplished, which to a STONES HEAD is brilliance.
I LOVE the Stones. My point is that, throughout their career, they have always been exploring various sounds, depending on what was going on at the time. Jagger has always been at the forefront of this exploration.

Every artist had influences from somewhere, and yes there are some that are just reactive. It meant (temporarily) disavowing some of my old heroes like Zep & Floyd.
But, I never dropped The Stones!
I also went to discos during that time (to pick up chicks).
When 'Hot Stuff' or 'Miss You (extended version)' came on the dance floor; The girls went *CRAZY!*
When The Stones did a country song, sometimes there was a little _'tongue-in-cheek'_ aspect to it.
But, the songcraft was still there.
Anyway, this channel represents the _'broad spectrum'_ of Stones fans.
While I may agree with you that '68-'72 was their _'zenith'_ ;IMPO they transcended their ups & downs before *AND* after that period.
*They still bring home the bacon every time!*
I find it helps if you avoid comparing a given album to their past success. Just compare it to the other albums that particular year.

Correct, Ronnie is a real cool guy that has such a great attitude and so talented. His paintings are wonderful. I had a chance to see his exhibit. He is a perfect Rolling Stone. Check out my other videos like Goats Head Soup which talks about Jamaica.

I’m so grateful to you for supplying me with even more 1st class information Steve. The hard work you put into this docu-series is very evident. Your ability to keep the listener interested is also worth mentioning Steve. Your accent and American drawl kinda compliments things, I agree with other feedback you’ve received… sharing how listening to this video is altogether quite relaxing. The interjection with appropriate interviews etc. works very well indeed, and compliments your own efforts to a high standard Steve.
Not much else to say mate, I think I’ve said it all. Incidentally, I’m listening to this TH-cam show on the train and it’s great to relax and disconnect with all those travellers around me lol. The journey is going swiftly, which is well handy Steve ta.
I’m an English guy living in East Sussex near Brighton. I mention this only because I’d like to offer you some advice on how to pronounce English counties. Just like most Americans, you haven’t quite got the handle on it Steve.
I explain this in peace and love, I only mean to be friendly. So, here goes…
When one says Berkshire - or any other county ending in ‘shire’, it’s pronounced ‘sheer’ Steve. We say it like this… ‘ Barksheer’. With the longer part being the ‘Bark’. Sheer is said kinda quickly… ie: Barksheer. We don’t say it as shyre Steve.
For example, Hertfordshire would be ‘Hartfordsheer’ too Steve.
Just a lighthearted bit of information for you shared in warmth geez.

My focus is content, and aware of mis-pronunciations. your lesson was appreciated. Truthfully, my head for maintaining and learning languages was not my forte. If I got paid for my efforts, I would do that research 100%....I rather put the time into the content. but again, enjoyed your teaching. The 1970s saw the Stones try to mature somewhat, and transform into a more slick sound. To that end, some of their songs started to sound a bit forced, or perhaps lacking some of that raw, somewhat rough-edged garage-band sound that arguably peaked with Exile on Main Street, but saw it's greatest expression in Beggar's Banquet, itself perhaps one of the top three greatest rock & roll albums of all time.
This is what I call the band's "tired" album. Many bands with long discographies have one or two - that album which lacks the old band spirit and just never seems to ignite. This came at a time when Keef's drug intake was about at it's peak, they had lost their one truly outstanding musical talent, Mick Taylor, who would otherwise have taken their sound above and beyond that of Garage Band done good, and were basically attempting to produce a super-slick product whilst pretty much burned out from endless cocaine and heroin-fueled tours (see: Cocksucker Blues). Not helping was the hiring of a guitar player who was basically a clone of Keef, who really contributed nothing which would allow the band to stand out.
There is no grit or real inspiration behind the tracks, and it does indeed signal the end of a great run of albums; the shark had been jumped, and once jumped it's nearly impossible to jump back. The only thing that could have saved the band going forward would be to hire a truly outstandingly talented multi-instrumentalist, perhaps a cross-breeding of Jones and Taylor, and to give him (or her) some free rein to contribute to the creative process.
Now, having heard a bit more about what he contemporary critics seem to have said, I would have to disagree that every song in that time between Exile and B&B was not up to standard. Actually there were some great songs, classics even (If You Can't Rock Me is a prime example). But all of the albums were subject to the aforementioned slick sound a la The Eagles California-style production, which takes of quite a bit of edge in my opinion.
You have some interesting comments Dennis. I totally understand what you mean, but for me I think the forced sound is more in in the 90's and up. Mick's vocals sound so contrived and the lyrics are sub par mostly. I do not hear this in the 70's. But we do know there was changes going on and the consistency was not there. I am glad they change it up and have different sounds. Can not argue with Beggars. Keep in mind, they were Exile was a real family feel, they ALL hung out and lived together, it carried over into the music.
@@FlipSideCT A absolutely agree with you - by the 90's it was really all over. Having said that, my then wife and I went to see them live in the States in about 1998 and they were fantastic. I was astounded how Mick was able to effectively run a marathon on stage (dude is *fit*!), and that Keef... was able to stand up (joke!).
One thing that we haven't addressed, which is quite a part of their sound, is the band's *attitude*. There's a sort of undefinable, slouchy F.U. to their demeanor which defined them up until the late 70s (or even up to the 90's as you point out). It's almost punk in it's virtual middle-finger to authority; indeed, if you listen to the Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out version of Street Fighting Man the guitar goes straight into a fast punk chop rhythm (and yes, I know they pretty much redid the whole album in the studio lol).
Having said all of that, the Stones have done much work individually and together that is quite good - jamming with blues legends, etc. But you're right, their album output just ain't there.
@@denniseldridge2936 got your comments....!! Mick is always ready for his alter ego to kick in for the live performing. I have been listening to these LIVE series they have been coming out with (Vault Archives etc), and listening and focusing on the guitars, and they are real sweet. What has changed is Chuck Levell is running the show, and there is just to much sound going on. That is the difference with 70's and 90's. The extra musicians and background singers are just to much. we need the basics. thanks for all!!

I heard Ronnie talk about the Mick Taylor quitting in an older interview.....had to do with sitting in a car.....and I thought it was odd, as I did more investigation from Ronnie's book it was a different story. So even they mix it up. Bill was always focused (except on stage looking at the girls, but then he was focused on them instead of the song) and the true archivist. thank you kind words!

No he didn't. He was working as a session bass player/rehearsed with Arthur/but was left off the final cut.
In a very short time: The story was de-bunked & that portion of the Alice interview disappeared!
I think Ronnie honestly thought he was on that record ALL THOSE YEARS!
But, the 'podcast-fact checkers' set him straight.

Black and Blue is a great album. That last album they made while Keith was on smack (I could be wrong). When he got off that stuff he got back into leading the band or at least taking a more lead role
If they would make this album now, we would ALL be blown away! Watch Some Girls Doc....Keith drifted a bit, and still had relapse

I really do not think you will get me or my points or others that see what I see. So no need to explain any more. Let me leave it with this, I really can not ever relate or appreciate BE BOP JAZZ or THRASH METAL, but I have no issue with others loving it and thinking how great it is. Who am I to say they are wrong!
@@FlipSideCT Absolutely, I think there is no such thing as a bad genre (although I am challenged, i.e. put off, by all this boy band pablum. But there sure is a lot of bad music out there. The Stones, in my view are the band with not just an extremely impressive catelogue and history. They are the best, greatest rock band ever. And they have continued to put out really pretty good albums. They have meant a lot to me through the years. I really, really liked them a lot when I was still in The States (Missouri). I was a sophmore in high school the year Tattoo You came out and I listened to it a lot. I thought Keith Richards looked like a pretty rough customer and mistakenly believed that Jagger wrote almost everything. I backtracked into Emotional Rescue and later Some Girls (which didn't really hook me until many years later. At the same time learned about the earlier Brian Jones years. I traded a hit of acid to a friend for my first ever cd (Satanic Magesties Request) though I had nothing to play it on.
I bought a box set of 13 album for $60.00 took them home to my bedroom lit some candled, took some No-Doz and stayed up all night drinking Pepperminy Schnapps and shots of vodka. FINALLY in the small hours, Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed. It was the same feeling I had after having heard The White Album for the first time. I knew I had just heard two works that had in the space of an hour-and-a-half, CHANGED EVERYTHING FOREVER.
But I also disoverered a lot of other great music during this time. Fast forward twelve years.
I came to Japan in '97 and sort of got caught up in Japanese pop and alternative Indies stuff for a few years. I turned back to Western music after that though. I picked up a copy of Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed at a used cd shop and took them back to my apartment to listen to them. I was stunned at how "literally great" they are. I knew Sticky Fingers was great but I began listening to that one again. The revelation was Exile. I had owned it in The States and knew most of the history behind it, but my copy had been kinda worn out and I tended to listen through speakers. Now I was hearing LOSSLESS versions on $650 headphones (thanks to the ol' university research fund) and it was like hearing it for the first time again--straight from Rock Off. I could actually hear deep into the rooms where it was created. It was then that I first realized it: I am fanatically devoted to this band.
I had started playing guitar again and for the first time vocalizing while playing: first folk music stuff like

[and I was privileged to spend an afternoon with Harry in his apartment in 1987 when Ginsberg mercifully got him a "lectureship" position at the Nuropa Institute. Harry was in bad shape and not making much sense by that time.] Later, talkin around 2008 or so in Japan, I began playing more classic country-blues and 1970s outlaw country. I worked up the nerve to start playing out at some of the British pubs. But to bring it back to the point, it was The Rolling Stones who gave me the confidence to go out to play country-blues at a British pub. I felt that if anyone heckled me for the shit music I was playing, well, if it was good enough to inspire The Stones, it is good enough for anyone. I thought I might get a hard time but no one was ever anything but really nice and the next thing I knew I was asked to emcee the open mic at one of those places [The King Georges in Omiya City, Saitama] which I have continued doing off and on--mostly off the last two year on account of you know what. I really owe a lot to that band.

But Mr. FlipsideCT, you wrote that you think I won't get what or why you have done the videos. I think I most certainly will. Let's be honest though. Half of Black and Blue (and parts of It's Only Rock and Roll are just objectively inferior to what came before and after. ROCK SOLID ALBUMS. But that's not the point of the videos is it. SOMETIMES it is when a band is faltering that they are at their most interesting, historically. WHY are they faltering. What sturm und drang are they undergoing? We don't have to fall into the sycophancy of some commentors to show our love for this band. We can love them warts and frailty and all. That's what I'm expecting to see from your video series.
From those early outtakes of "Slave" I can also hear a similarity to " Everything's Turning To Gold". Do you know if that tune was from around those same sessions?
A lot of songs tie in and mix.....part of how they would let things flow. Slave was from 75, ETTGold was from 77' sessions.

Known as the "audition album" with Wayne Perkins and Harvey Mandel on guitar along with Ron Wood. Pure mid 70s dreck. Hot Stuff as a lead off song is the warning shot that The Stones best days were behind them.
In the ears of the beholder. You don't get it, that is fine. We Stones lovers believe Mick is brilliant in HOT STUFF/ guitar work, if this came out now, it would be off the roof. oh well.

Cant wait for the Emotional Rescue doc! Always had mixed feelings about B&B...stones were beginning to wait longer periods between albums, and, as Lester Bangs said, the album was "about absolutely nothing". Almost true, but musically it has real vitality and risk. The weakest tracks imo are the most conservative - Crazy Mama, Memory Motel. The rest is terrific...
oh the pressure.....everyone has their thoughts. A Stones Head will always love it thru and thru!

I place 'B&B' in The Stones Fan's *'Phoenix-from-the-ashes'* category.
Let's be honest. Long-time fans were _'scratchin' heads'_ when 'Exile...' came out.
As time went by, it presented its true brilliance!
We were _'scratchin'-our-heads'_ on 'B&B', too.
Not as iconic as 'Exile..' But, it DID present itself
as an oddly great entry as time went on.

I'm not a fan of ballads.
But, when I hear 'You Can't Always...'/'Wild Horses'/'Angie'; I think: 'exception-to-the-rule'.
Two of the best songs on this album are ballads. And I (eventually) dug them!
I really like 'Crazy Mama'.
But (as you said) IMO.
I've been there since BEFORE they were considered #2 to The Beatles.
I find myself drawn back to this LP more than some of their other records I would normally call: _"Better"._ And I don't know why.

Well said ; I don't get people who dislike the Stones (granted I've met precious few dissenters...). Any number of their albums are cornerstones (pardon the pun...) of rock'n'roll. We still read Shakespeare 500 years later and the Stones - in time - will have the same impact on culture.
