    We were so lucky to grow up in the 60s and 70s with bands like this. So what they lifted classical music and incorporated it into their compositions. Still light years ahead in talent to most of the crap that calls itself music nowadays.

      But like those you mentioned, behind John Mclaughlin, Scott Henderson, Alan Holdsworth, Mike Stern, Al di Meola, Frank Gambale and many other Jazz Guitarists. Even though he's very good and has got a superb technique. But as a guitarist it's easy to figure out who's really good and who's only good in the eyes of non musicians. Hell, a professional saxophone player I know and used to play with has got the same oppinion as me. Even though we couldn't use him on the guitar in our hobby Jazz Fusion Band.
      But Akkerman surely was/is a master of "sweep picking". But I would never go to a concert with the "guitarists" you mentioned. They have to be far better than me to be interesting. But your picks are mediocre to an educated guitarist. Only non guitarists/non musicians are impressed by them even though they aught to know what I just wrote is true.
      Even Walter Trout is at least on the same level, probably better, than your picks.

      I, as a teenager and before playing seriously, used to loose my jaw when listening to Focus and thereby Jan Akkerman. It changed when I started studying guitar in depth.
      But his Lut playing is cool and shows he's got pretty much musical talent.
      Not as Julian Bream or john Williams. But a great talent he surely is.

    I saw Focus at the Rainbow, Finsbury Park in the mid seventies, I had no idea what I was going to see. Suffice to say over 40 years later I am still listening to them, an exceptionally talented group, up there with the best (I saw most if not all of them From Taffic, Camel, Caravan, SAHB, The Who, Bowie, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea, to an endless list of glory. Nostalgia does no one any good, yet how I long for and miss those days).

    This is still one my all time favourite albums. I remember the first time I heard this track. The first side of the LP had finished and I was already blown away. When I flipped it to side 2, I heard suddenly, "Variations on a Theme by Haydn", by Johannes Brahms coming out of the speakers. Good grief, I thought, what's happening? Wow, this is brilliant! The second side didn't let me down, it got progressively better and better. The whole album is simply sublime. Great to SEE this finally. Had the vinyl years ago. Somewhere between John Lord's Concerto For Group and Orchestra and Pink Floy's Atom Heart Mother. And I see from another post that Focus is touring again. More power to them! Thanks guys!

    Why this band isn't mentioned among the great prog bands like Yes and ELP is a mystery to me. Great musicianship, arrangements and just a tight band. These songs are timeless even after the bands are gone.

    Focus and free are by far the most tight bands I've heard. Not in the music sense but in the sense of being one as a Band.

    So true what the comment below states... this is genious. Van Leer is so classically trained with vocal, woodwind, and multiple keyboard talent and creativity beyond belief. Jan Ackerman is a story all by himself.... up there with Alan Holdsworth. What stunningly perfect combination jazz, classical, and fusion leads he comes up with. I am partial to the studio recorded version of this piece and have memorized (in my head only!) every note, chord, keyboard sound, Leslie acceleration, vocal, and drum part (excellent by the way) because Ive listened to it so much and never stopped liking it. I was fortunate to see Focus in 1973 at Winterland in SF. There has never been a band quite like them, before or since. This piece is eternal in my opinion, and continues to produce endorphine levels that would require triplicate receipts if it were a controlled substance cannl

    One of Akkerman's Leslie speakers seems to be cone cracking and distorting a whole lot. But that gives a peculiar flavour to the whole atmosphere!! I love the band and their music, thanks a lot for the upload!

    Jan has one little effects pedal! Guitarists today need a huge board of pedals and effects and still can't get a song as good as Jan's.

    • @Meddled
      @Meddled 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think his one pedal is a speed control for his Leslie cabs. All the distortion is coming from those Fender heads he's using.

      Hold on. I'm 48 and I grew up as a young guitarist in a time where the tube amp was (sadly) swapped for reliable solidstate amps because of hurting backs and hurting ears. But we needed a pedal, or three, or 4 or many more. Tube amps are great and with a great pinky-volume-control technique you can do a lot, but: my beautiful Vox AC30 (Korg eara) became too many times too hot. In many cases too loo loud, too heavy and, because of many repair, too expensive. Now I have a Boss Nextone solidstate amp and many pedals and I get satisfied with the sounds I get, and the weight, and the the temperature, and the costs. But OMG I love Focus, Jan Akjermam, Thijs, Yes, Steve Hackett. Flying Colors, Mark Knopfler, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Lindsey Buckingham, Jethro Tull, A-ha, Toto, ABBA, Mr. Mister, The Beatles......

    Very GREAT! This is the best live performance I've seen so far of Hamburger Concerto! I do always miss Thijs' vocal fun at the beginning and I wish he would sing that cool minimoog solo melody like it was on the album. But maybe these live recording were done before they recorded the album?
