  • I do not own this song. Title track from their 1974 album "Hamburger Concerto". It's actually one of my favourite songs by Focus. It's based on a Brahams' piece called: "Variations on a Theme by Haydn". It's a marvelous piece. Enjoy!

I once had a roommate who was into prog rock big time but never heard of Focus. I waited until he was good and stoned then played Hamburger Concerto from the beginning. When it came to the vocal break about 5 minutes in I thought I would have to call an ambulance. He was laughing so hard he couldn't breathe. The next day I found him copying the song onto cassette. 80s memories.

I know i am not alone that much of this hits me amidships harmonically. I started digging Focus as a boy because of jan's staggeringly inventive solos, but stayed with them mainly because of Thijs's compositions and humor. All hail FOCUS!

Absolutely their masterpiece! This is Focus at the top of their game - and even at their most mediocre, they could run rings around everyone else. Jan and Thijs may have disliked each other, but the music they made transcends this. What a pity they fell out; its everybody's loss.

It was a shame so very few people attended FOCUS' show in Santiago two weeks ago. Ironically, it seemed to me to be the best of the 3 times I've seen them live and Thijs Van Leer is more energetic and charismatic than ever. Pierre Van der Linden on the drums made the date a must. Great band and show to be remembered and perhaps we could see them again in Chile some time soon with a good promotion campaign etc. The band that created Hamburger Concerto deserves the best, don't they? Van Leer was happy he had the audience he had here this time and those of us who were there thanked him back. Thanks for sharing this inmortal piece from the best days of prog-rock, for me, the days of full discovery, mid 70's.

During the opening section of the "Hamburger Concerto", Focus makes several quotations (first time at 2:22) from a German Lied - possibly also by Johannes Brahms or Franz Schubert. I'm not quite sure which. I only remember having listened to that song on one of my many CD's some years, saying to myself: "Hey?! That's one of the themes used in "Hamburger Concerto". :-)
