- A Scottish community of wooden chalet owners stand up to their feudal landlord
Distributed on Undercurrents Alternative News video issue 9 1999
In 2013 The Carbeth Hutters, the community of self-sufficient cabin-owners near the Campsie Fells which has helped inspire a national hutting revival, has succeeded in buying all its land and forest from their landlord.
They now own the land themselves after a community buy out.
Its very sad it all amounted to class war. It was my grandfather who offered his land to hutters in the 1920's and I was brought up for part of my life at Carbeth and hitters seemed happy then. Everyone has a right to opinions but it is NOTt a fact that Carbeth Guthrie sold for £1.2 million even if that was around the original asking price. My cousin made an error in my opinion in not speaking to the film maker when asked to comment but then maybe he realised it would be a biased film and whatever he said he would be regarded as a 'toff living in a big house'. I lived in that house and am not a toff. Its very sad that so much mistrust and prejudice occurs in Scotland. How many landowners in England would share their land?!! I am proud of what my grandfather did in using his privilege and sickened to see the hate campaigns against my cousin. Lets hope it is all moving on now. Its a privilege for anybody to be able to use a bit of land in thus unique part of Scotland.
my uncle is grounds keeper on the estate for over 10 years since then alan graham has put his estate house up for sale and has sold the land to another landlord who will have to put up with the moody tenants, but as the estate house has sold for £1.2 million pounds he will have a nice retirement at the close by carbeth house.
is the tenants high rent still problem .i was thinking of trying to buy plot for me and my wife. can u tell me if this is worth still applying. cheers

A short documentary I made on Hutting :)
The Carbeth Hutters, the community of self-sufficient cabin-owners near the Campsie Fells which has helped inspire a national hutting revival, has succeeded in buying all its land and forest from their landlord. Great news!
Carbeth community buy out is an exclusive community sell out. Gentrification abounds, heritage dismantled, 50k minimum for a hut.
@@bellamia4174 Its a hard choice that has befallen many plotlands across the UK in the last decade or more.
@@StefanSzczelkun no option, no choice, no community.
My Grt-Grandmother's name was Lucy Ann Isabel Wallace and she was married to John Black in 1842. Attracted to this Carbeth Video because of a phrase whereby my Grt-Grandmother stated in an 1861 English census, that her birthplace was Hollan Carbeth (subject to translation ). Would you be able to contribute any meaning to her phrase Hollan ? She was born in Scotland around 1813 if that's any clue. Thanks, Paul
Welcome
I cop-directed the film but no Hollan means nothing. Ask Carbeth directly?
