I have an iPad and ended up purchasing a Surface Pro. The iPad is I credibly powerful, some apps available go beyond my expectations. But at the end of the day it’s still a tablet that can’t run full desktop software. I found my self carrying my iPad and MacBook. The Surface is more of a computer than a tablet but a decent bridge between both.

Apple wants to make money and differentiate their product from the other products out there, all in one bundle is just gonna make them a Surface pro copy cat plus they will lose a lot of money from existing apple fans who buy both these products for their apple ecosystem. If someone already has a functioning (nothing fancy needed) then they can comfortably get the iPad for going paperless while doing the few tasks that the iPad is unable to do so on their laptop. And for the other set of people, getting a surface would probably be a great choice considering that it can function as both.

Noteability has the ability to change the color and style of your paper. You can go from lines to a grid pattern and different colors. And you can record your lectures directly from the app. Tracking your notes as you record. So if I want to review and hear what was being said at the exact moment I was writing, it will allow me to do that. Best note taking app hands down.

Something that I just thought of by someone asking me, is what's better "an iPad Pro or the Surface Pro 7?" When I began to think about that question, that automatically made me think of a pro's and con's list. It did not take me long to arrive to answer the person asking the question.
What you have to realize, is that as great as the iPad Pro is, it's still an iPad at the end of the day. An iPad still runs a trimmed-down operating system that relies on apps. Whereas the Surface Pro 7 runs a full version of Windows, which has both an App Store, and you can download outside programs if you can't find what you're looking for in the Microsoft app store, on an iPad you can't. On an iPad, you are restricted to the app choices through the app store.
This means, if what you are wanting to do, can not be accomplished through an app, then you are out of luck when it comes to working on an iPad. Also, the iPad does not support full screen when connected to an external display. Now some apps do support full-screen mode on an external display, but they can sometimes be unstable.
On the Surface Pro 7, you do not have this issue. You can either set it to mirror your display or extend it to another screen and it will display in full screen.
I had tried using an iPad as my primary work computer, but could not find an app for everything I do. Although Safari is supposed to be a full-functioning web browser, it does operate all the time as a full browser like Chrome. If you rely on Chrome extensions, you will not be able to replicate them on an iPad.
As great as an iPad is, you have to really think about what your needs are? How can those needs be met? What is my budget and which device offers me the best value? If the work output outweighs the cost of the device, then you have your winner. Great video Noah.

  • @husainzaidi627
    @husainzaidi627 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Great Video, man! To the people who're complaining for a tablet being more expensive than a full-fledged computer - Many don't realize this, but if you're comparing prices of the compared devices, then also consider their integration with the ecosystem. On Notes app on iPad, the moment you take a note (handwritten or text) it instantly reflects on your Mac and your iPhone, no 3rd party installations, no lag, no refresh needed! And it works perfectly!
You can argue that OneNote does the same, but for anyone who's tried using OneNote on 2-3 different devices will vouch how inconsistent its performance is.

In Noteability you CAN change the form of paper and add lines etc. Furthermore it has an inbuilt ruler, meaning if you draw a line and hold, it will make it completely straight. The same can be done with triangles, squares and circles.
The same applies for highlighting, which makes it much more visually appealing when highlighting.
Additionally I feel that the eraser tool on the  Pencil is better, because you just double tap rather than flipping the pencil. This is faster and more convenient when taking handwritten notes imo.

Good video, but I recommend that you spend a little bit more time playing around with each app and learning its features before doing a comparison. There were several things I noticed about a couple of the apps.
As has already been mentioned, Notability does offer a choice of different background papers. They also offer the ability to import or purchase linked PDF planners, calendars, etc. (So that if you click a link in the PDF it opens another section/tab of the PDF.) Notability has poor text editing abilities, and very poor RTL (right-to-left) support. While they offer handwriting-to-text conversion for most Latin alphabet based languages, they don't offer it for more complex scripts like Hebrew or Arabic. I use Notability for taking notes in a mixed language setting, (I'm a graduate student in Israel so I often have readings in either Hebrew or English, while the class discussion might be conducted in the other language.) I will handwrite Hebrew notes, but I don't attempt to type Hebrew in Notability because it will only left justify, not right justify. That's an easy fix, and I have written them about it, but they have not implemented that feature yet. Regardless, the ability to simultaneously record audio while writing notes, and have both synced to each other is the main reason I use Notability. I used to use OneNote for that feature on a Surface Pro, but the iPad's superior handwriting speed and recognition caused me to switch. I find the Surface Pro lags too much, and it makes my handwriting look like a preschool child when I'm trying to write quickly, while my handwriting on the iPad looks exactly the same as if I wrote on paper.
OneNote is a much more powerful app than you let on. It offers research integration for students, an almost infinite workspace, the ability to quickly add space between things that you have already written, etc. You also did not mention, which is a huge omission, that OneNote on the iPad doesn't offer the ability to record audio while you take notes. The Windows version does, but the iPad version doesn't. Microsoft knows that if they offer feature parity between the Surface versions of their apps and the iPad versions of their apps, that more people would get the iPad. Seriously, there is no hardware or software limitation preventing them from adding the feature, and if you go to their OneNote features request page for iOS, you'll see that the most requested feature is audio recording while taking notes. But they refuse to offer it. Too bad. I actually prefer OneNote, but I like the handwriting experience on the iPad better. So I use Notability instead of OneNote. :(
The video is well made, and I enjoyed it, but the content could use a little more polishing.

As a physics student that plans on attending graduate school in about a year, I'm torn on whether I should go with a Surface Pro (or some other cheap 2 in 1 laptop for notetaking) or if I should just get an Ipad (or other writing tablet). It seems like the Surface Pro or other 2 in 1 is a cheaper, unless I buy an older model Ipad, and the writing of the Surface Pro is better. But I really want to get a Mac because it is apparently the standard for laptops among theorists, due to it being built on Unix and using the Linux operating system. I also want to eventually invest in a good gaming desktop, to replace my six year old gaming laptop, which will almost certainly use Windows. So it seems like a waste of money to get a 1000 dollar windows laptop, if I will later get a Mac and a much more powerful Windows desktop. I think I would much rather get a cheap writing tablet, so I can get a Mac now but I don't want to sacrifice writing quality by getting something cheaper. This all overall seems pretty expensive overal, so maybe the best solution is just settle for a decent gaming laptop with a touch screen for now and then I can get a Mac later.
