No speed limit doesn't mean any speed is fine. The highway was way too crowded for 240kph. Dipshit without blinkers doesn't help, but cruising at that speed doesn't show particularly great awareness either.
whilst I kinda hate that there's no speed limit at all for anyone and that you don't need special qualifications to do this, I'm kinda proud that the legal system here recognizes that going this fast is what many affectionately call "fucking around", basically the way I understand legal precedent for this is that no matter how dumb the other driver was behaving, you're getting part of the bill unless you can prove that driving perfectly and at the recommended speed, you'd still have had essentially the exact same crash
So true. Goes split responsibility for insurance. Insurance companies in Germany start shedding their responsibility starting from 130 km/h speeds. 240 km/h probably means zero comp. for you.
@original comment: I am asking for additional speed limiters all the time, something like 200km/h at curved roads such as this. But so far nothing beyond 130km/h exists, leaving people to assume that going 300km/h all the time is fine.

I've noticed that the common denominator in all these Autobahn crash videos is someone randomly merging into the left lane without looking or using their turn signals
This is why I don’t feel like driving fast on the Autobahn is safe anymore. Many years ago I felt like most fellow drivers on the Autobahn were pretty good with looking out for traffic, nowadays everyone just throws their car into the left lane even if there is someone coming, seemingly with a “me first” mentality. If I drive about 160, I have to step on the brakes hard almost every other minute from people bombrushing into the left lane. Ever since covid I feel like people just stopped giving a crap.

@@99domini99I've never driven in Germany so for me driving at such speeds doesn't seem safe. Even if everyone is looking in their mirrors before changing lanes, how do you judge a car's speed far behind in the left lane? It could be driving 150 or 250.
@@georgthesecond It's not hard to judge closing rate. You look in your mirror, make a mental note of where they are, look forward again, then a second or two later you look in your mirror again. You could also ignore step 2 entirely and just yeet your car into the next lane and be the average driver tho.

We are in germany, not in USA. Also he was going at 240km/h, at this speed if you crash into someone you are basically screwed. He actually marked the sign for unrestricted stretch ahead so yeah, he is in the right. This is the worst nightmare driving fast on the Autobahn. I had two situations I can remember when people abrubtly pulled out in front of me like that at about 200km/h and I had to immediately ABS break, almost hitting them. One of those times was less than a meter. Both times they pulled out to overtake lorries so like 80km/h less than me, once without signal, once with the classic signal-and turn-at-once. More times than that, maybe 3, I high beamed people that I might not have evaded and they mamanged to jerk back in lane. So not only did he fail to see that there was a car in the lane he wanted to change to, he also failed to signal his intentions to other motorists. HAD he indicated before moving, the car that he merged into, would have had more time to react, and to know that the driver was indeed intending to change lanes.
Anyone saying that the speed is the issue, and not the car changing lanes without looking, without signaling, and while SLOWING DOWN... needs their license revoked.
doesn't matter, if you exceed the recommended speed you're getting part fault because you're assuming risk, you make yourself hard or perhaps even impossible to spot on time, you get a braking distance that's too long for road conditions, etc. Insurance will foot the bill, but time and time again people have fucked around in this way, and, in the form of part fault, have very much found out. The only way you get out of this is if you can show that going at the recommended speed (Richtgeschwindigkeit) of 130kph and doing everything right would still have resulted in the same outcome, aka almost never. Plenty of example cases for this if anyone cares to look into it, for example this one: BGH 17.03.1992, Az.: VI ZR 62/91
yeah but if speed is not a factor then would you say that this situation would happen at 150 kmh for instance, i drive on the German Autobahns and not everyone travels at 240kmh, if i want to overtake a normal driver who is driving at 130kmh and i go into the left lane a car travelling at 240kmh cames up on you very quickly, in my opinion there are many bad drivers on the road and those who travel at 240kmh should be very aware of that!
The thing is, even on these unlimited sections you do need to use common sense. You have to be able to brake in case of a situation such as this. There is quite a lot of traffic here, I would not drive more than 200 or at least use the high beams, people do see these quite well. Not only this, but I have noticed drivers are more and more inattentive.

When I lived in Germany, late 90's I was taught that the rules were you had to "clear" traffic from your left; therefore the merging driver at fault. although major portions of the Autobahn have unlimited speed limits, if accident happens when speeds are exceeding 130 km/hr both parties are considered guilty. I really enjoyed the Autobahn when I was there, think I'd reticent now about rolling along at 250km/hr with so many immigrants in the country sharing the road.

I had a similar case today. I was driving at 130 km/h and the car in front of me began to brake sharply. It happened in the left lane of the highway. Fortunately, there was no one behind. If it weren't for the distance between us, I would have crashed into that car. My hands are still shaking. ALWAYS keep your distance! This could save your life!
@The Real Cat of 2020 LOL, I wasn't tailgating. At that speed, a car travels 37 meters per second. Even if you are not tailgating, you can get into an accident.
Probably a tourist! I’m danish and I know when driving on the autobahn! You always hold to the right! Because it doesn’t matter how fast you drive, on the autobahn there is always one that’s driving faster! And for us with normal speed limits! 180-200 kph is fast! But in Germany it’s called regular driving! I was driving 230 kph at one time and I got overtaken by a car. That it made me think I was going 50! I love the autobahn!
@@giovannip8600 nah he was doing everything right, the other car was at fault, he will have to pay for damage, you can't get in the left lane of the Reichsautobahn without looking behind
Thats ABS and ESP helping. Try to do that in a Car without that and you have no chance keeping the car straight. You would've either spun before hitting that car or hit that car way worse
Slamming the brakes for an emergency brake AFTER the collision until he comes to a full stop is not what I call good driving skills, as this behaviour endangered the following traffic. To be fair, it's hard to keep cool and reasonable in a shocking situation like this and of course it could have been a lot worse, but driving at such a speed requires full concentration and being ready to brake at all times.
He shouldn't have driven that fast in the first place. At that traffic density, it is to be expected AT ANY MOMENT that some other driver screws up. FWIW, the dashcam owner will probably get 30% of the liability even though the other guy was at fault. This is what usually happens in Germany when you drive faster than the recommended 130 km/h, even if you aren't at fault. The reasoning is that by going that fast you impose an elevated accident risk for which you are liable. A rule that makes a lot of sense, IMO.
240km? He is asking for trouble, no matter how good you are driving, dont put anyone else in danger, at that velocity if something outside your control (external drivers or malfuction) happens, you are taking responsability. Smart blind-turning guy in the other hand, should be banned of using any form of transportation.
There is nothing you can do but aim for the space between the car and the railing in the middle and hope you make it through. People need to learn when on a high speed highway one eye always on the mirror and one on cars in front

@@alexmorris6373 I see. Consider this: at such speed, while you brake and stop your vehicle, you need around 576 meters. It's a lot. Any «real» impact at that speed would make the driver a pulp. So no more go pro, no more video. Maybe, a snuff one. Anyway, I got what you mean ;-)
Calling it the fast lane is wrong and the reason why it is common for people (especially non-germans) to hog it. It is the passing lane, only meant to be used when passing slower traffic.
No, you slam the brakes at that kind of speed you'll lose control of the vehicle, or you'll cause the cars behind you to hit considering you just stopped the car in the middle of the highway. That was probably the best approach and no one got hurt and the damage really wasn't that bad.

Because in Germany are a lot of stupid people who think " oh I'm going 150kph that's really fast let's switch the lane to overtake someone" but 150kph isn't very fast in Germany. But that's the way especially old people think here and what causes crashes
Because they are idiots... Probably they drive the same dangerous way. Waiting for "passing"(But it is more blocking the left lane) another car until they see a fast car is near enough and then changing the lane. Today it is very common on our Autobahn...
@@MrQmie instead of typing a post full of assumptions and wild guesses you could try and see what really happened here: a guy thought it was cool or 'necessary' to go 240kph on a crowded highway and was totally surprised by the fact that something could go wrong in a situation like this. again, if you actually watched the vid you might have noticed that the ABS was working during and even still after the collision. good news is that the guy was using the full braking potential of the car - in fact many accidents could be avoided if more people did that. however bad news is that this was still not enough which means that the crash could have (easily) been avoided at a lower speed. you might want to consider this before jumping to wild guesses and assumptions again....
@@pc-pq6es speeding on those highways is perfectly legal even at those speeds, its not always for driving for fun or just speeding the heck cause they can, people uses those roads to get to the point they need to go. Not everyone going fast is in blame, sometimes these assholes just become much more dangerous threat.
@@cengizteouluyurt7053 Yes, it's legal to drive 240 km/h on the left lane but the driver could get problems for this crash too. In Germany, there is a recommended speed of 130 km/h on ALL parts of the Autobahn. That means you have to match your speed to the traffic on the different lanes, if the highway isn't empty like in the video this speed could count as reckless driving because he was way over 130 km/h. If the driver has bad luck he probably get's a ticket and a part of the fault (and has to pay the damage on his car himself because of that).
Assuming the Skoda is going to move back in because you are flashing him, and not braking is so dumb.
We are in germany, not in USA. Also he was going at 240km/h, at this speed if you crash into someone you are basically screwed. Usually when someone flash their light, especially in germany, it sends a signal to drivers that there is someone there, so it's rare that people actually keep going to lane-change. Especially that he was going out of a corner, so for him it was probably obvious that he just checked his mirror too soon, so that by flashing his light he would have gotten his attention
And also we are talking about a situation in which you have a few seconds to react. Breaking is not always the solution, especially on the autobahn where if you lock your wheels or the accident isn't at a good angle you are gone.

@@adem6581 If he was switching lanes, they he not only forgot to look in his mirrors, he also forgot to turn on his turn signal to indicate that he was doing a lane change.

So not only did he fail to see that there was a car in the lane he wanted to change to, he also failed to signal his intentions to other motorists.

@@JohnDoe-bd5sz on point!👍🏻
The speed is not THE issue, but it sure didn't help the situation.
Almost all accidents have multiple contributing factors.
yeah but if speed is not a factor then would you say that this situation would happen at 150 kmh for instance, i drive on the German Autobahns and not everyone travels at 240kmh, if i want to overtake a normal driver who is driving at 130kmh and i go into the left lane a car travelling at 240kmh cames up on you very quickly, in my opinion there are many bad drivers on the road and those who travel at 240kmh should be very aware of that!

I really enjoyed the Autobahn when I was there, think I'd reticent now about rolling along at 250km/hr with so many immigrants in the country sharing the road.

Abs probably would've kept him straight without letting him change direction so it's complicated but not wrong
Why would braking help here?
When i drive so fast i am always extremely carefull of exactly this case. That an idiot will suddenly change lane. Most of the time i decelerate when i think that there is the tiniest possibility that the car which is in the middle line could try to overtake the vehicles in front of it.
When you drive this fast, the person may not see you in the mirror, so it’s a real concern. It’s difficult to tell a car’s true speed in a mirror. You’re doing it right!
George L that’s why I periodically check my mirrors to have a rough idea what’s going on the left behind me. That way if a car suddenly shows up in the mirrors it’s probably accurate to assume that he’s fast as fuck.
PasteteDoeniel Yeah, but unless you check every 2 seconds, it wouldn’t do you any good with someone traveling that fast because of perspective. Perhaps a truck or bus, but not a flying GTI. Just because every german knows how to drive on the autobahn.
Slamming the brakes for an emergency brake AFTER the collision until he comes to a full stop is not what I call good driving skills, as this behaviour endangered the following traffic.
Probably an American in a rental car preparing to enter its natural habitat: the left lane pacing the car next to it for 35 miles.
ahahahah this made me laugh xD

Russian driver: *Will not survive any crash because he drives Lada 2114 made from beer cans*
yeah but then again that Lada can't drive that fast....
@@GeoStreber Do not underestimate Lada 2114. This Russian meme-car is capable to kill everyone in the cabin even at 40 km/h speed.

That is really impressive. The fact that he was able to react before the crash became far worse.
If he reacted by presing the break instead of " here i come " blink out of my way...
did he react ?
@@robertlindner1484 im german and i drove my fair share of 180 on the Autobahn it takes some time to slow down he definetly braked and gave him the light horn so he did all he could

@Ashley Cook ???????? 99% of ppl would have totaled their cars
Use the light switch instead of the sterring wheel.:) What a dumb guy. This crash was a 100% avoidable by the Golf's driver.
I swear most of these people saying he could've slowed down would've panicked and crashed, this guy handled it so beautifully.

@@rb6forlife389 what u talkin bout Willis?
The reason why people say something like it is: He flashed the light instead of using his brakes. He knew what was coming and what's going to happen in the worst case.
It amazes me how you saw it coming, but instead of slowing down you first went for your lights...
Germans don't break

A nice example of the fact that not everything that is legally permitted is also sensible to do (and I am by no means minimizing the guilt of the driver coming from the right).

Still gonna have to replace some parts since it dragged along the side of the car. At 240!

So, at 240 km/h, you were expecting him dead
newpeppe I am English so 240 seems very fast, also I never said I was expecting him ‘dead’ I said that I was expecting more of a ‘crash’, I thought he might ram someone up the back or something similar to that rather than a little skim at speed.
Alternative title: how to not enter the fast lane of the highway
How to not slow down with the lights flashing. They teach that in driving school?
Calling it the fast lane is wrong and the reason why it is common for people (especially non-germans) to hog it. It is the passing lane, only meant to be used when passing slower traffic.
The overtake lane. Its not the fast lane. Its the overtake lane. For overtaking.

I thought fr that he would go 240km/h crash into a wall. 💀
Dont rely on someone elses reflexes, brake as fast as possible
Yeah no shit bro ahah he was like 240 😅
No, you slam the brakes at that kind of speed you'll lose control of the vehicle, or you'll cause the cars behind you to hit considering you just stopped the car in the middle of the highway. That was probably the best approach and no one got hurt and the damage really wasn't that bad.
Ur delusional buddy
buddy slamming ur brakes up hard locks them then u slide and crash n flip!!!
