Another smaller danger that could be an early run killer is the fairies. Sure with luck, one could avoid the youkai, but the fairies are just about everywhere. Imagine getting lost and twisted around trying to escape Muenzuka or exploring Gensokyo early on because some fairies are pulling a prank and making you lose your way. This could make you an easier target for youkai, not to mention that they sometimes play "pranks that go too far" with examples shown of humans falling from cliffs due to their antics. Now if you excuse me I am going to lead the biggest fairy army in Gensokyo to do what the fairies of light couldn't do, terrorize human society.
@@eagleye2893 Glad you picked that up, because that's the point. :) If you can't invest enough in yourself that you can't deal with going to this restaurant (going to the restaurant with the danger there is on the way, self-defense, and having to defuse potential scams and threats), then you should forget about settling anywhere else than the cozy Village. Because really, walking a couple kilometers outside the Village to go eat some youkai-made cooking sounds like the easiest "survival" mission compared to everything else, so it's a reasonable gateway to the "endgame" where most seem to want to explore the land and settle in more difficult conditions.
That's basically the tutorial mission, so experienced survivors can skip it. Most of the people reading this are probably not experienced survivors (think Bear Grylls).
The most an average human can do against Rumia is run, she's not likely to pursuit you for long, other way to evade her is by throwing a flashlight at her, or cabbages.
「ああ…こんにちは。道に迷ってしまったのですか?」 The shrine maiden dressed in red and white was working at her shrine, obviously in the middle of something you just interrupted. She startles forward, stands straight up and looks at you dead in the eyes. 「さあ、出口を教えてあげる。ついて来い…」 "Nah, I'd win." 「えっ? ごめんなさい、私は英語が話せません――」 She is cut off at the end of her sentence by the sudden explosive force generated from your legs as you begin your backwards long jump. She starts again, but realizes that you probably would be fine on your own as you vibrate on the ground intensely, building up speed and skipping like a rock across the dirt and sand path. 「あなたは食用人間ですか?」 Along the way out, you find a little girl hovering in a strange pose who asks a peculiar question, but you ignore it as you are speedrunning your bug-ridden exit. You speed past her as she menacingly faces towards you, shouting strange sounds with her child mouth. Eventually, the vibrations of your body reach the speed of sound, producing a burst of air that people from even the farthest reaches of Gensokyo could hear. The strange girl backs away, astonished. All of the residents of this fantasy world now know your location and IP address, but it's not like they can go to your house. None of this matters to you. All you have to do is keep backwards long jumping until you break out, and before you know it, you're out. The air is cold. The chill of the non-existent wind rushes down your skin like millions of hairs that feel like they're there but aren't. You look around you, but all that meets your eyes is nothing. Your sight is silent, and your hearing is dark. You are confused. You are a bit afraid. You went too far in your backwards long jump and popped out of bounds! But congratulations! You completed the challenge. You did your speedrun. You escaped Gensokyo. And now you're stuck here.

She's a prodigy of hard work, I'd say. She's certainly smart, but her greatest asset is her work ethic. That's why I wanted to make her progress the 'best case' if someone was to dedicate themselves.
She works hard, and even then, she fools around plently, by playing with Reimu, making firework, or exploring new magic making her a generalist while you could be more focused in certain aspects in order to become stronger. Also, another thing to note is Patchouli's library may not be open to the public, but she did lean books if asked if we take 'Inaba of Earth and Inaba of the Moon' manga as truthful.
From what I remember, Rinnosuke remarks that Gensokyo uses currency, but it's just whatever drifts in from the outside world. What would drift in is likely yen since it's Japan, but only small amounts people have lost over small amounts of time. You have to be around Gensokyo's barrier to enter, so even if you're a tourist, you should be carrying some yen on you. We can assume these yen notes are more valuable than normal in Japan because not much yen would pass through the barrier. Therefore even a tourist may have a very high amount of cash when entering Gensokyo.
In the last chapter of CoLA (lol) he also says to Sumireko that her current outside money has no worth. Gensokyo is based on bartering and the worth of money is just based on the quantity of notes, not the type or number on them.
@@ScileSc I knew that when I posted this. My assumption is that a tourist would have a decent amount of notes due to spare change from buying tourist stuff. Particularly they would own a decent amount of coins. So a tourist would have a decent amount of notes and coins.
@@oceandashWhen I visited Japan I did not typically have a large quantity of notes, as pretty much any store would break large bills for you. However, I did have to buy a coinpurse to carry coins around. At most I had about 20-30 different coins at once.
Speaking of, if you are a non-Japanese tourist, you can buff the fitness marginally since you would be more than a couch potato, as most tourists have decent stamina.
Despite reimu's famous actions regarding a certain author, becoming a yokai on accident would likely result in her just escorting you out of the village or chasing you out, becoming a yokai because you felt out of place or because you never felt human to begin with would probably just inspire pity in her.
@@Mariisadol basically an author in the village conspired to have themselves turn into a vengeful spirit in a bid for immortality, basically setting it up so someone would find an unpublished manuscript and publish it under their own name, fulfilling the requirements to come back as a vengeful spirit without the whole driven by vengeance thing. It disgusted reimu so much that she slaughtered the original author despite the fact he was a peaceful youkai
It depends. I agree that if you get alienated from the village to the point where they start fearing you or spread rumors around you, she might spare you because it's a somewhat natural process and doesn't necessarily imply intent. Whats way more dangerous is the scenario of casting the abandon food spell. Since this is freely throwing away your humanity, you will probably make enemies with the human village and inspire special hatred in Reimu. (As far as I understand she draws the line at humans *wanting* to become Youkai, which she considers deeply unnatural) Having Reimu be determined to exterminate you might be one of the more dangerous scenarios. You only need to achieve some limited danmaku abilities to fend off weaker apparitions and you can learn to handle mid-tier and stronger beings, but if she's serious there's almost no way you're going to beat Reimu at any point below danmaku mastery, and if she's like that you will die if she beats you. You can only survive Reimu if her hearts not in it, or if you've evaded her long enough that she maybe starts mellowing out on you.
@@marzipancutter8144 i feel like magicians aren't a concern like that, actually. after all, the core prerequisite that we know of is a spell of _abandon_ food, which means ... well, not needing to eat. which means you become a yokai that does not eat _humans,_ removing a lot of the risk in letting you do as you wish or even in terms of allowing you to stay in the village. you might definitely be casting aside your humanity, but it's in service of becoming a non-human existence that isn't actually all that distant from humanity. considering more yokai-like yokai very much visit and even sometimes live in the human village, i doubt a simple magic user that doesn't seem to age would be more than somewhat unusual around there, albeit you might end up being a bit unpopular with most of the population and, hell, this is all on the assumption that you can even tell someone who has abandoned food from someone who hasn't. the unaging part of a yokai magician would make it obvious eventually, but that's _eventually_ - unless you managed to pull off the transformation as a kid, it could be literal decades before anyone notices that "aging gracefully" stops being a believable excuse. and even then, if you practice magic publicly, you might just be assumed that you're using said magic to maintain your appearance by the magically illiterate. if anything, the abandoning of food is perhaps _the_ part you'd actually have to be careful about, as should people start to notice that you rarely eat human food? well, they might just start suspecting you of subsisting on _human_ food, and suddenly whatever mysterious disappearances had occurred during your stay find themselves gaining a plausible explanation. which will likely lead to the villagers either running you out themselves, or calling on the local miko to investigate ... and then you likely still having to move out even if she doesn't think you're a concern, because rumors like that don't dissipate easily and continuing to live in the village would be living as a pariah also, on the jinyo: while i doubt reimu is fond about the idea of humans becoming yokai, it's worth noting that the guy was only _technically_ not a vengeful spirit. he was still a resentful dude who resurrected into a yokai through the power of a _grudge,_ so even if he avoided becoming a vengeful spirit through "controlling his emotions" ... how long would that last, really? guy was walking a razor edge and became a yokai to _join the ranks of individuals he _*_saw as oppressors,_* dude prob had an aura of slimy malevolence that you could experience with all five senses. it makes the "ultimate sin" of humans becoming yokai feel more like a metaphor tossed at him than a hard rule; he saw humanity as something weak and exploited by the powerful yokai, so he used extreme, dangerous techniques to become powerful and exploit the weak. i dunno 'bout you, but to me? seems like that makes him a pretty significant threat to reimu's wish for peace between humans and yokai hell, if you want to dive deeper into the subtext, the guy did all that and _thought reimu would agree and take his side._ frankly, i wouldn't blame her at all if she was originally planning on just running him out of the village to work out his issues away from the villagers, but then his goblygook was _such_ an insult that she no longer felt like giving him a chance
@@hi-i-am-atan Magicians aren't really yokai I think. Not only do you not eat humans, you also aren't bound by their fears or beliefs. iirc becoming yokai happens if people are ostracised by society, become feared and have rumors spread about them. So it is a much more natural process that doesn't usually happen with the exileds volition. Of course this could also happen to you after becoming a magician, but it could also be avoided. But I think Reimu has way more principled beliefs against giving up your humanity of your own free will I think, and it is my interpretation that this is because she strongly cares about things following their natural order as the keeper of balance in Gensokyo. She also has a terrifying intuition so she'd probably find out if and why you abandon your humanity. If you were to become a magician for the pure passion and love of the craft, that might be something different, but since we're being strategic here... let's say I'm not willing to bet my life on her lenience or ignorance. ig her reaction really comes down to your personality though. But I have to say it is a funny thought trying to explain to her that you had to yeet humanity because you need to bed your favorite Monster Waifu.
I want to add some points: - Learning how spell card system works could be a huge step up in your survival as the rules in perfect memento in strict sense states that the opponent can't kill the human opponent when they lose, and no matter how powerful a youkai is in gensokyo they must adhere to the spell card rule, so you can have some chance even against someone like Yuuka. Just be skillful enough to put up some fight so whoever you fight can have some sense of excitement when they win. - Like in planescape torment, faith, or rather, belief is power in Gensokyo. If you could gaslight the population of Gensokyo you can do a certain thing e.g. fixing things that falls from outside world, you will eventually able to do that thing e.g. fixing things from outside world even if you have zero idea how it works. Be warned to not do this to upset the powers in Gensokyo or a certain shrine maiden will come visit you. - Follow up to above rule: Do not teach science to the human villagers. Belief is power in Gensokyo, and the more humans learn how the world actually works, the risk of them disbelieving things will be greater, as how yamabiko almost extinct when the rumor how sound echoes spreads in the village. If you disturb the primary source of faith for youkai, ALL the youkai will come for you, and the gap hag will kick you back to the outside world at best.
Well, to give you an example, there's Sanae Kochiya, she used to be just human, but due to faith she's a Demigod now, or maybe straight up a God, can't remember.
@@theeaglemaster388yes sanae is a living god(don't know why) she have three god blessing from suwako, kanako and her own blessing(I pretty sure read this on lostword and few other sources) sanae gain her blessing because the amount of faith she gather and it's fused with kanako and suwako faith thus create her own blessing
Did i just watched a 20 minutes tutorial on how to survive in a fictional world...? From a game i barely know anything about? Heck yeah. And it was fun
Probably not the easiest goal to work towards, but pursuing blacksmithing as a profession in Gensokyo sounds kinda cool. You could even find ways to extend your lifespan so you can keep polishing this skill indefinitely - with enough time, you could even become proficient enough to make weapons to just about rival mythical weapons, assuming you put all your focus into that area of crafting. I kinda like this pitch. Someone should work this into some kind of tabletop-esque game and give it a shot, honestly.
its just mage the ascension but in japan. you put your points into matter to bind enchantments into weapons/armor (and to make them too i guess) and then....prime? for pure magical damage, or maybe force to make a blade of pure fire or lightning or whatever. maybe use entropy if you want a weirder power for your enchanted blade. points into life if you want normal immortality, mind if you want to just put your mind into a different shell. or combine matter and life if you want to slowly replace your body with one you create.
step 1: arrive at gensokyo, step 2: die because of the sheer amount of youkai in there, step 3: reincarnate as some kind of angry shoe, step 4: live in gensokyo as the spirit of a angry shoe that didn't get enough walking around done in gensokyo whose previous owner got eaten by youkai, step 5: eat humans that come to gensokyo

If you don't know what you're doing, NOPE. I don't think it's a good place to live in at all. Just stay in the human village. Yeah, the creatures we encounter in the games appear cute, but in reality, they're most likely man-eating yokai and you should just stay away from them. As a computer science student, the idea that spells can do anything if you know how to construct them makes me wonder if the broader concepts could be likened to coding and if that would give me a sort of small advantage in hypothetically learning magic. Sounds like a conversation I’d like to have with at least one of the local magic users.
Ran, Chen, and other shikigami essentially *are* computers. Yukari had to quite literally program that into Ran and Chen, and Hieda no Akyuu likens shikigami to computers,
I do the same thing, I honestly do that with any sort of magic system I come across. It's even better if the magic works through runes because then it's just programming, minus the computer.
@@stephaniejohnson5361 You're in that life right now though too. In a world with magic it might as well be considered science. We have science in this world and you already can do all sorts of crazy interesting things with them.
Here are some tips to speed up your game. -Occult Balls: Aka the Usami skip, if you gather enough Urban Legends from Mystery Spots, you and maybe your heritage will skip to Gensokyo's mid game. However, to keep up with the difficulty, you'll need to find average understandment of magic before then, and the glitch may end up causing a constant target on your back for any anomaly it end up causing. -Race change: Similar to the hermit/monk route, this can work to access certain zones of Gensokyo (except the moon) while also banning yourself from others. Old Hell with Zanmu and Hermits who became Celestials are a testimony of this being possible, but ghost and spirits wouldn't count because then you'll be dead. -Befriend another yokai early: This seems impossible, but it worked for Ichirin to a certain degree. Sure, for her, she had to defeat Unzan, but there may be other possible methods. Also, you want that yokai to be available to you as much as possible.
While the method is accurate, Ichirin herself isn't part of this, sadly. She, quite literally, is a yokai. A pure blooded yokai who I'm pretty sure has never been a human, ever.
@@PhantomGato-v- Ichirin's article in Symposium of Post Mysticism claims she was originally a human, and eventually turned into a youkai after meeting Unzan

First thing I would think in Gensokyo is "I can finally learn magic in other to transform into a rip-off Power Ranger/Kamen Rider" and then I'd do anything in my power to find books about summoning armor and learning to have literal explosive kicks
Also, you forgot to mention that Makai's miasma improves the power of spells. So if you can survive there, your magic will become far more powerful. So if the hallucinogenic mushroom miasma of the Forest of Magic becomes too easy, you have somewhere else to go.

What Ive learned: Have friends and dont break the law too much so yukari doesnt teleport me into dinner zone. Heres a funny thought. I think your more likely to die in Gensokyo than in the Len'En projects Mugenri. However, I feel like the inhabitants of Mugenri are far more likely to beat you up in a fight and rob you.
Yeah surviving here is much easier than in Gensokyo, as fending for yourself is much more accessible (just commission Haiji) and there are more """"helpful"""" individuals that know English, and much more amicable youkai (debatable) but god bless you if you try to climb up the ladder: raising your Magic/Fighting and Money stats are WAY important than raising your knowledge level (as your average Mugenrian as dumb as you are, if not below that). And the only safe option is the human village of Mugenri, or Devangara if you're a law abiding citizen since you wouldn't want to get an audience with diabetes kid; though Youkai Shrine maybe a safe option depending on how looking forward they are for residents. I think the main rule is to be able to stand for yourself in the winner-take-all world and not get the attention of the wrong crowd (especially Suzumi/Tsurubami: the former will kill you, while the other will make you wish you were dead)
Plus, gotta add that flight is seemingly less common in mugenri, to the point where Jun is surprised to see a flying human. Granted people might just walk because it makes them much less likely to be shot at, but it's worth considering that flight isn't the first thing you learn, when it comes to magic.
Then, theres Project Moons Backstreets, notably described in Library of Ruina. Organ harvesting? Yep. Cannibalism? Yep. If you dont live in a wing, good luck.
This is a great video! Normally a lot of the responses I see to the question "Could you survive in Gensokyo?" are quite pessimistic, so to see a more realistic approach is amazing. Personally, an idea I thought of for any quick money-making strategies would be selling off any technology specifically to the kappa or the Moriya Shrine (probably the Moriya Shrine if I'm aiming to do it as fast as possible due to the aerial tramway and how easy getting to the shrine would be) as they'd probably want the resources and be able to use them better than I'd be able to use them.

a terraria-esque survival game in gensokyo would lowkey be fun tho. I see a lot of demand for a Touhou / Gensokyo RPG here, so I felt I should use this opportunity to mention a Touhou Minecraft RPG project that I am working on. It uses the Gensokyo minecraft map to make a fully playable Touhou RPG with spellcards and more. If you're curious about this, you can take a look at the showcase video that I have uploaded recently. (if you're not into minecraft, just ignore this comment I guess.)
Imagine seeing a shrine maiden with a magician flying arround and battling with a pretty monster like a fighter plane on britain in every season, i guess is worth it lol
I remember how we used to discuss and fight over these things 10 years ago, wars were fought concerning interpretations of paragraphs of lore, it was a time of blood. But watching this video was kinda fun, because it surely is a better presented and lighthearted version of those old debates. I feel one thing that must be emphasized is that, to survive and - perhaps more important than mere surviving - wanting to survive in Gensokyo is to learn to think like a person from a traditional society. Charles Taylor wrote a 900 page book about the difference between traditional and secular societies and, in my opinion, 97% of the people who survived the first week would be begging to return to the modern society, missing wifi, air conditioned and refrigerators (not gonna lie, I'd totally be one of them). If you want to become part of the 3% that actually wants to stay there or has a binding clause and can't leave, you'll have to change your entire mindset (also, as a personal note, I think I said in a previous video, but learning academic mythology made me appreciate Touhou so much more, because it makes us aware of these differences) - even Sumireko doesn't STAY there, only visiting when she's feeling like (and it's unclear if it's her or her doppelganger youkai). Also one thing that I feel it should be said is that no one in Gensokyo should be taken in face value. Even Akyuu's Gensokyo Chronicle has some things that count as exagerations or understatements. This is why learning the mindset is even more important.
100% agree on that last part. Learning Touhou lore reminds me a lot of reading primary sources for historical events. Like, you can't just read that shit & take everything at face value. You have to use a lot of your own analytical skills to find the reality within the fiction and separate them. Doing that requires knowledge & understanding of the culture that primary source was written in, as well as understanding who the person that wrote it is & knowing why they wrote it.
The Lunar Capital might not be entirely out of the question... if one somehow manages to get a hold of the Ultramarine Orb Elixir to rid themselves of unwanted impurities (ignoring the potential side effects that consuming it could incur). Even without that, there are a few instances of humans staying at the capital for a while (Reimu for roughly a month; the fisherman Uranoshimako for several years...), so the Lunarians might not be entirely closed to the idea under the right circumstances. Matter of fact it, could even be a saving grace in the worst-case scenario where one gets stranded in Gensokyo *at night* and during a Full Moon, though it'd take a bit (a lot) of luck for them to get transported to the Lunar surface via the Moon's reflection on bodies of water. Still, even the slight possibility that this could turn a hopeless run into a major success is pretty interesting I think. Being spirited away into Gensokyo is rare enough on its own so there's no harm in being hopeful; everything is based on probabilities, after all. Besides, the worst that could happen on the Moon is being sent back to Earth since people up there dislike needless killing, making it a much safer place than most other locations in hindsight. Let's be honest, between the Watatsukis' inability to kill an old fisherman and Sagume's unlikely savior of the firework festival in the Grimoire of Usami, I'm willing to bet most Lunarians (excluding Chang'e) are a bunch of softies who couldn't cope with the Earth's survival of the fittest nonsense and went on to build their perfect home in the Pure Land while still influencing the Earth's History from a safe distance, and maybe even aiding in times of dire need as Amatsukami. I'd much rather stumble into a silent yet sober Sagume than a drunken, irritated Reimu on a bad day because unlike the former, the latter doesn't particularly mind needless killing. Labor, food, currency, resources, and even time would cease to be an issue given how advanced their civilization is, so it'd definitely be worth a shot. One major drawback is that learning their language would likely impossible, which is a shame considering the invaluable knowledge that must lie within their books and scriptures. Uranoshimako's journey to the Moon led to him becoming a Kami, so the possibilities truly are limitless in the end. Plus I'm really curious about the criticisms Lunarians have of our flawed human society. Their games of Shogi might be a lot of fun, too.
I’d definitely be stuck as a rice field wagie. Even with my knowledge from the outside world I wouldn’t be able to do much because knowing about technology and being able to build it are two completely different things.
I always wanted to make a DnD campaign in Gensokyo but didn't know how to approach it. Now, I'm tempted to make it a survival affair starring regular joes as PCs. Thank you for the inspiration!
I would like to do a ttrpg campaign as well, but I think DnD is horrible for survival campaigns, I think you should look into systems especific for that (although most of them are really setting specific, like forbidden lands)
@@xaropevic7918 Seconding this, D&D is not well suited to a setting like Gensokyo. I would suggest one of the fanmade Touhou RPGs out there, like Mystic Youkai of Neofantasia.

I have a theory re: language fluency in Gensokyo: Considering its origins as a sanctuary for youkai, it's evident that not all youkai that live there are Japanese in origin or background. If they're not allowed easy access to resources in the Human Village (or even with each other), they don't have an easy means of learning Japanese either -- extended lifespan or not. Yukari would've likely accounted for this. She could easily do away with language barriers, as a measure of promoting diversity among supernatural beings. Also, common sense doesn't apply in Gensokyo. That alone might allow for linguistic coherence. :P
Somehow you can estimate Gensokyo safety by using Backrooms survival difficulty. I think the class of Gensokyo would be... Lambda Class: -Unsafe and Unsecure -Constant Human Hostility -Presence of Hostile, Sentient Entities.
Depends on where you appear. Human village would be instantly safe. Hakurei Shrine too. Either shrine probably. Edit: I wouldn't say that most Youkai are man eating, but there are definitely enough that are man eating to be dangerous. Also, was Remilia actually the culprit, cus as far as I'm aware, that was never stated. Also, love Rinnosuke's Dare da omae. SSG Marisa's papi.

Youkai are harmed by spiritual attacks, so if you can manage a strong enough prayer, you could theoretically give yourself a better fighting chance. Also, I feel like Eientei would be a pretty good place to find yourself, too. I'd doubt that anybody there eats people, and Eirin would be able to learn your english faster than you could learn Japanese. Then she'd probably let you stay as an extra hand or have Reisen take you to the village. The only concern if you stayed would be Kaguya's requests and avoiding eye contact with Reisen (which is easy for touhou fans).
There was something oddly nostalgic about this video. When I was in high-school I used to fantasize all the time about getting spirited away to Gensokyo. (I even wrote cringe fanfiction about it.) I remember playing an RPGMaker game years ago where you control an outsider in Gensoukyo. You could recruit characters into your party and I think there was a romance mechanic in there. I;d love to play another RPG like that if there were more.
I think it would be fun to use chemistry knowledge to do something that will surprise local people, maybe selling simple medicine (acetylsalicylic acid) or demonstrate the power of explosives (such as TNT). It can also make you look more valuable. My ideal scenario would be cooperating with Eirin to exchange knowledge.
I'm not sure if they'll need medicine given the fact that they've got Eirin... that say, maybe it could be used to offer some cheaper competition so you can at least pay the bills
Remember the part where your intelligence gets nerfed upon entering? You'd need to bring some type of chemistry book with you should you enter... and even then, it'd need to be for dummies. Good luck on the hustle.
@@Lamadon_PyreusDoesn't that mainly pertain to meta knowledge? I mean if you're an expert in Chemistry IRL. I don't think you should simply nerf your knowledge in gunpowder and coke.

This video might give me ideas on how this person could properly adapt to Gensokyo or learn a magic that gives infinite ammo if needed.
That’s a very wonderful idea for a military guy in a fanfic who is Gensokyo. I’m truly looking forward into that. Other military add characters you should put in is Doom Slayer/Doomguy, Master Chief/John-117, Simon “Ghost” Riley and other military characters.
How to do it: Use Touhou 18 beta and abuse the shit out of the infinite cards glitch after being strong enough to defeat Mike Then become the most absurdly strong person in the whole of Gensokyo after getting like 1000 cards of each character Obliterate everyone
If I gain enough proficiency to live relatively on my own in Gensokyo’s environment I could see myself residing in the bamboo forest, seems like my kind of place. (Totally not me partly just wanting to hang and chat with Mokou)
Same here. I would try and lay low in the human village for as long as possible until I had enough funds to commission the Kappa to build me a cozy home in the forest to live alone. Then, I could be well secluded, and nobody could easily bother me while I experiment with magic alone. Provided the isolation mixed with constant magical experimentation doesn't drive me crazy...

Now someone needs to make an rpg with this exact premise, surviving in a fantasy world with 0 knowledge of anything, not even language, could make such a good story I feel like this could also be a roguelike game, where you can get different endings based on your actions etc, this has so much potential
Vid's basically my rough thoughts on what it'd take to survive in Gensokyo, particularly how magic is likely your best bet if you don't want to simply be a villager. Entertaining vid as usual!
Imagine this being turned into a rpg roleplay game where the difficulty is basically the early game of stalker SOC and the complete hopelessness of pathologic, also the random brutality of fear and hunger
New Touhou fan here. Thank you for the video, I found it very enjoyable and informative. Also, I agree with the many people who mentioned it: this has to be made into RPG, 100%.
This entire topic is such a fun concept and idea for a Potential Open world Touhou Game where you're suddenly ishekaied into Gensokyo and you start off as a nobody but end up as a permanent fellow resident (or a food) Once you reach your safe hub that being the Human Village thanks to Reimu cus i doubt she'll let an outsider lives forever in her shrine,There you start to refugee, build your character up,decide what you're plan to do,pick up which kind of self defense you're gonna choose which is most likely magic and then explore Gensokyo properly and safely at your own leisure. and then you'll get to meet the rest of the Legacy character in their respected zones, probably get to know and connect with them as most as hospitable (so long as you're powerful and respectful enough), decide if you're gonna work under them which helps you to build up more connections or just choose to explore further. Hopefully One day, we'll get a proper Open world Touhou RPG, just exploring the universe and Interacting with the legacy characters alone is more than enough.
There's an RPG fangame called The Outsider Who Loved Gensokyo that dwells into this idea of an outsider being drifted into gensokyo and travelling and just about almost exactly what your looking for. I think it's interesting and worth checking out
Damn dude, this is quality content. Honestly, Touhou content creation needed someone like you! I am a huge fan of how informed this video was! Gensokyo lore and customs are super interesting and fun so I'm always surprised tons of people aren't eager to jump in and learn!
9:50 This is actually the most important thing someone could know about In Gensokyo. Old western magic still works, as the barrier would have to be attached to an unsealed "dragon vent" to make such a large AoE remain effective and stable. Likely one of the few left in the world. If someone say, had prior knowledge of dark era Merlinian magic despite it being basically useless outside the barrier (unless they found a vent of their own to train using), they'd arrive in Gensokyo with a DRAMATIC head start.
If I found myself spirited away, I’d probably do my best to make a living in the human village for a while, learning as much as I can about Gensokyo and magic, and I’d probably make my goal to be a sennin, pursuing the Taoist arts from wherever I possibly can get knowledge from. One of the main reasons I want to be a hermit is for the long life-span. I do not wish to become immortal. I am content with the idea that I will die one day. However, I would like to extend my life for as long as possible, not for the sake of power or to be the smartest sentient thing in the world (I assume I can only use so much magic and religious practices to embolden my mind before I start going crazy from the hundreds of years worth of memories) but I would love the opportunity to experience seeing the world change over the course of a few centuries, providing guidance to both people and youkai so that they may live better lives. I would think that the path of ascetic training would be hard and arduous, but I think the end result would be a soul-healing experienced that’d give me a clear, serene mind. Finding peace with myself and who I am as well as imparting peace into other people is something I strive for, and something I am very much not perfect at (far from it). I don’t want to do anything to change the way how Gensokyo works, so I plan to at the end of the day keep a low profile, exploring everything that Gensokyo has to offer in terms of sights, sounds, and wisdom. So uh, yeah, although giant laser fights and harem power fantasies have their appeal, if you asked me what I’d really want realistically, I’d take the slow ascetic life. I’d feel like that’d be the best use of my time in Gensokyo.
Then there is me, thinking up how I can learn magic as fast as possible so I can terrorize the Touhou's for fun. What? You thought I was gonna go the harem route?
I think this is epic. Personally I'd go for magic over taoist arts, since presumably I could learn those arts as a magician. But pursuing self-enrichment and attempting to better the lives of everyone around you is definitely the best lifestyle to pursue. I wonder if it would be possible to change the perception of man-eater youkai so that they no longer require human consumption to survive? Would Yukari even allow it?
@@josephraulcabralesaragon9151 Realistically, I wouldn't challenge anyone til I get to the point I can hold my own against at least Marisa in a fight. THEN a Terrorize Youkai that absolutely deserves it.
Honestly, considering making it to the Human Village is the best-case scenario, befriending and potentially working for Kosuzu part time at Suzunaan would be optimal for someone who could easily be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of change occurring in your life so quickly (and let's face it, you probably will given the circumstances.) It would not only net you an income, but Kosuzu would be your go-to translator, making learning about Gensokyo a bit more accessible. Plus, working in a book rental store would be a safe, quiet enough environment for someone to settle in comfortably (assuming you can get passed the low but potential risk of encountering demon books.) That all aside, I just want to befriend Alice, chill and have tea parties with her. : )
As someone that hasn't been as into Touhou as much I used to be over half a decade ago, this was an interesting watch, glad TH-cam actually recommended something good for a change.
What if instead of building/buying a house I'd move into an abandoned one? Like the abandoned monastery on Yokai Mountain, who the tengu massacred the residence of. I'm sure there are other uninhabited buildings scattered around Gensokyo made by unwise humans, but I'll be different because I'm better. One issue I see with those is that'll constantly be accosted by tsukumogami and the like, but hey, it's free real-estate. Another option would be the old tree house of the Fairies of Light, but the chances of not only stumbling upon it but also noticing it's a house are quite astronomical. Though thinking of that, fairies are quite good at building dwellings; Cirno, Larva, and the three fairies all have fairly cozy homes. So maybe I'd be possible to -trick/scam- convince some fairies to make me a home, I'm sure their demands would be much more reasonable (Like some broken coloured glass or something).
An abandoned home would work, yeah. Fairy dwellings I believe are said to be unnoticeable to everyone except fairies, much less enterable. I'd need to double check on that.
@@GensouChronicle I think they are unnoticeable, but in the last chapter of Visionary Fairies in Shrine Reimu and Marisa go inside the house of the three fairies.
@@LittleLamphead Okay, neat! I thought I was forgetting something. Maybe they need to be shown the way in first? Maybe befriending fairies might be beneficial after all.
I don't think it's that easy to get into the Forest of Magic because of the Miasma, but again with some training that would surely be possible. Merry Xmas
As a disabled guy who speaks no Japanese and who's only experience with Touhou is the game Luna Nights and a Bad Apple AMV literally 20 years ago, this guide was made for me! Oh, but I'd definitely die. Like, DIE die. It'd be a whole thing.
Good and fun video- I would object to the extermination of Kogasa, as she's not doing anything dangerous! At worst she could be considered annoying. Or maybe she'd surprise you or scare you so you'd drop something. Although it would be kinda funny if Kogasa herself put up posters for her own extermination to try to convince people that she's dangerous so she could scare them better.
The funny thing is that attempting to exterminate youkais is probably one of the worst options since the youkais that do need to be exterminated are the ones that won't have an issue with killing you, and unless you're an extremely strong human like Marisa chances are you're going to die pretty fast lol
With kogasa you could attempt to create a blacksmith shop that uses minerals for something else other than weapons, since she stated on wild hermit that blacksmithing is one of her greatests abilities
@@Admiral_Jezza realistically speaking… Using the logic of Gensokyo… I meannnn I never see that phone run out of battery in the doujins. Who said that could happen?
this is literally something i'd watch a 2+ hour video on, or even an entire game. going far more in depth on how many variables there are in play here, the types of magics, the options between all of them, the challenge of settling in certain places. perhaps even challenging the impossible. there's so much a 20 minute video couldn't cover and i'm sitting here genuinely wishing for more. this is coming from someone who hasn't even touched a touhou game, by the way.
Why would you bring me there with no prior knowledge of Gensokyo? That just means I could never be with Koishi because I wouldn't be able to see or perceive her not knowing her. The only choice is to grind and try to become a human pet in the Palace of the Earth Spirits and hoping someday she tries to play with me putting ketchup and sawdust into my meals
Very fascinating concept! I really liked how thorough you were with everything. I was just thinking about what I myself would probably do in that situation, given my background in medicine, and one route I feel you could have explored is inquiring with the mysterious medicine saleswoman (Reisen) who frequents the village about an internship. With some prior scientific knowledge, there might be a chance you could land a gig at the Eientei clinic -- at lower levels, you'd probably just be doing grunt work. But at higher levels you might get to do patient interviews and help make medicines (under Eirin's supervision). .......And importantly, this puts you in close proximity to Kaguya.......
Outside technology my wife and I have which is valuable to the village: - Modern techniques for vertical farming. - Incorporations of old permaculture with new farming methods. - Modern advances in mushroom cultivation. (We intend to retire as farmers) - Being lesbians. - Being actual career Linguists. (Neither of us know Japanese very well) - we got mandarin, French, Norwegian, Russian, English, and Spanish going for us - as well as being really good at picking up and teaching languages. - We're both great cooks and bakers. - her specialty is macarons - mine is sourdough - and various misc skills that I wouldn't really count as "important" outside advancements Downside: We are of comparably poor health. Though this mostly is trouble with our bones, weak immune system, and general tiredness. We appear youthful, externally, however.
As someone who wrote a slice of life story for Touhou, this is pretty spot on. Very well made. One thing I would add; if you somehow had a special skill or trade, one unique to Gensokyo, your quality of life would improve a lot. As stated, knowledge from the Outside World is invaluable.
You know I saw the Title of this video and was like "Well..duh? Chill in the Human Village and you should be gucci no?" which is why didn't bother watching at first but I am glad I decided to in the end because this is was actually a really fun watch and super interesting! Great Job!
This does make me kinda wish there was more actual content about adapting outsiders, it would be neat to see how those able to live adapt, and how any natural residents would feel about seeing these outsiders growing Though on a completely unrelated thought, I know it will never happen but god I wish there were characters or even a touhou game around Jewish folklore. Touhou has done neat stuff with other religious practices, and it wouldn’t have to be too western given the history of having to move. But really my main thought is that one reoccurring idea of Reform Judaism is looking eastward. Sure that’s in reference to Jerusalem, but there’s also how some medieval thoughts came to the belief that the garden of Eden was in the far east. So there could be something spiritually wholesome in allowing characters that reference Jewish folklore to live in the eastern Wonderland of gensokyou.
We have a couple of games that heavily feature Sumireko at least, which is the closest we have to "modern day outsider tries to survive in Gensokyo". Honestly the fact she managed to survive as long as she has despite royally peeving off multiple high powered characters is rather impressive.
I would also like to see more religions appearing in Touhou too! There have been already some few mentions to our cultures before, but honestly, I think ZUN seems to lack some knowledge about them, some things mentioned before looks to be out of place, misinterpreted or unfinished
Hmmm... I wonder how good my survival chances would be if I just played with the fairies most of the time. Maybe I could even get invited into a fairy dwelling.
Depends on the fairy. If it is the scrub fairy with the IQ of a burnt toast, there is a good chance you could take them on in fights and grind your way up like an RPG while having fun playing.(Unless their prank breaks your leg or sth) If it is one of the Daiyouseis, you ded, probably.

I did a scenario exercise (roleplay) with an incident in gensokyo, I have a character who's a Nam vet and he's basically a handyman. Not really serious about the language barrier. But doing these scenarios helped me develop the character. Gensokyo however has some leg room for interpretation. Pretty cool video.
If u want 100% safe run, rush for the village immediately. Then wait for reimu or marisa to ask them to get yourself home (if ur a coward, they have a good chance of helping u). Or you can safely camp in the village and wait for Kasen Ibaraki abd request for her to train you. she is fairly nice and i definitely think she is more than willing of getting a student. Of course theres a good chance it will not work on u but hey at least ur safe in the long term and if ur a student of one of the sages in gensokyo, then you'll be recognized by most of the cast and they will look for u when a situation u go missing
Gotta be honest. I saw the thumbnail in the corner of my eye, and I misinterpreted the head labeled "you" as Kagerou's belly and thought she was pregnant.

(As far as I understand she draws the line at humans *wanting* to become Youkai, which she considers deeply unnatural)
Having Reimu be determined to exterminate you might be one of the more dangerous scenarios.
@@marzipancutter8144 i feel like magicians aren't a concern like that, actually. after all, the core prerequisite that we know of is a spell of _abandon_ food, which means ... well, not needing to eat. which means you become a yokai that does not eat _humans,_ removing a lot of the risk in letting you do as you wish or even in terms of allowing you to stay in the village. you might definitely be casting aside your humanity, but it's in service of becoming a non-human existence that isn't actually all that distant from humanity. considering more yokai-like yokai very much visit and even sometimes live in the human village, i doubt a simple magic user that doesn't seem to age would be more than somewhat unusual around there, albeit you might end up being a bit unpopular with most of the population
and, hell, this is all on the assumption that you can even tell someone who has abandoned food from someone who hasn't. the unaging part of a yokai magician would make it obvious eventually, but that's _eventually_ - unless you managed to pull off the transformation as a kid, it could be literal decades before anyone notices that "aging gracefully" stops being a believable excuse. and even then, if you practice magic publicly, you might just be assumed that you're using said magic to maintain your appearance by the magically illiterate. if anything, the abandoning of food is perhaps _the_ part you'd actually have to be careful about, as should people start to notice that you rarely eat human food? well, they might just start suspecting you of subsisting on _human_ food, and suddenly whatever mysterious disappearances had occurred during your stay find themselves gaining a plausible explanation. which will likely lead to the villagers either running you out themselves, or calling on the local miko to investigate ... and then you likely still having to move out even if she doesn't think you're a concern, because rumors like that don't dissipate easily and continuing to live in the village would be living as a pariah
also, on the jinyo: while i doubt reimu is fond about the idea of humans becoming yokai, it's worth noting that the guy was only _technically_ not a vengeful spirit. he was still a resentful dude who resurrected into a yokai through the power of a _grudge,_ so even if he avoided becoming a vengeful spirit through "controlling his emotions" ... how long would that last, really? guy was walking a razor edge and became a yokai to _join the ranks of individuals he _*_saw as oppressors,_* dude prob had an aura of slimy malevolence that you could experience with all five senses. it makes the "ultimate sin" of humans becoming yokai feel more like a metaphor tossed at him than a hard rule; he saw humanity as something weak and exploited by the powerful yokai, so he used extreme, dangerous techniques to become powerful and exploit the weak. i dunno 'bout you, but to me? seems like that makes him a pretty significant threat to reimu's wish for peace between humans and yokai
hell, if you want to dive deeper into the subtext, the guy did all that and _thought reimu would agree and take his side._ frankly, i wouldn't blame her at all if she was originally planning on just running him out of the village to work out his issues away from the villagers, but then his goblygook was _such_ an insult that she no longer felt like giving him a chance
I want to add some points:
- Learning how spell card system works could be a huge step up in your survival as the rules in perfect memento in strict sense states that the opponent can't kill the human opponent when they lose, and no matter how powerful a youkai is in gensokyo they must adhere to the spell card rule, so you can have some chance even against someone like Yuuka.

You could learn from Kogasa.
@@GensouChronicle Very true, and it probably wouldn't be that hard to get her to do so.
its just mage the ascension but in japan. you put your points into matter to bind enchantments into weapons/armor (and to make them too i guess) and then....prime? for pure magical damage, or maybe force to make a blade of pure fire or lightning or whatever. maybe use entropy if you want a weirder power for your enchanted blade. points into life if you want normal immortality, mind if you want to just put your mind into a different shell. or combine matter and life if you want to slowly replace your body with one you create.
I'm either aiming for being a carpenter or a master mage one of them is way easier than the other
Reimu allegedly killed a man for trying to become a youkai, so trying to extend your life span may lead to a premature death.
step 1: arrive at gensokyo, step 2: die because of the sheer amount of youkai in there, step 3: reincarnate as some kind of angry shoe, step 4: live in gensokyo as the spirit of a angry shoe that didn't get enough walking around done in gensokyo whose previous owner got eaten by youkai, step 5: eat humans that come to gensokyo

As an IT Student, the best way to summarize a program is: "It just works because I added some codes and stuff. It's like magic, but computer."

Heres a funny thought. I think your more likely to die in Gensokyo than in the Len'En projects Mugenri.
However, I feel like the inhabitants of Mugenri are far more likely to beat you up in a fight and rob you.
True, and there's also fewer options of learning magic in Mugenri
But more opportunities for obtaining technology
Not a bad idea.

I have a theory re: language fluency in Gensokyo:
Considering its origins as a sanctuary for youkai, it's evident that not all youkai that live there are Japanese in origin or background.
Lambda Class:
-Unsafe and Unsecure
-Constant Human Hostility
-Presence of Hostile, Sentient Entities.
Depends on where you appear.

Tch, there goes my plan of left, right, goodnight
Even if you gone mad from looking at Reisen it's not like Eirin being a genius wouldn't make a contingency for that.

This entire topic is such a fun concept and idea for a Potential Open world Touhou Game where you're suddenly ishekaied into Gensokyo and you start off as a nobody but end up as a permanent fellow resident (or a food)
Once you reach your safe hub that being the Human Village thanks to Reimu cus i doubt she'll let an outsider lives forever in her shrine,There you start to refugee, build your character up,decide what you're plan to do,pick up which kind of self defense you're gonna choose which is most likely magic and then explore Gensokyo properly and safely at your own leisure.
and then you'll get to meet the rest of the Legacy character in their respected zones, probably get to know and connect with them as most as hospitable (so long as you're powerful and respectful enough), decide if you're gonna work under them which helps you to build up more connections or just choose to explore further.

Slow, easygoing life is what Gensokyo is about, so I think that's great.
@@eagleye2893 I like the energy, but realistically they'd whip your ass so hard.
@@josephraulcabralesaragon9151 Realistically, I wouldn't challenge anyone til I get to the point I can hold my own against at least Marisa in a fight.
THEN a Terrorize Youkai that absolutely deserves it.
Honestly, considering making it to the Human Village is the best-case scenario, befriending and potentially working for Kosuzu part time at Suzunaan would be optimal for someone who could easily be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of change occurring in your life so quickly (and let's face it, you probably will given the circumstances.)
It would not only net you an income, but Kosuzu would be your go-to translator, making learning about Gensokyo a bit more accessible. Plus, working in a book rental store would be a safe, quiet enough environment for someone to settle in comfortably (assuming you can get passed the low but potential risk of encountering demon books.)
That all aside, I just want to befriend Alice, chill and have tea parties with her. : )

As someone that hasn't been as into Touhou as much I used to be over half a decade ago, this was an interesting watch, glad TH-cam actually recommended something good for a change.
Thanks!

Good and fun video-
I would object to the extermination of Kogasa, as she's not doing anything dangerous! At worst she could be considered annoying. Or maybe she'd surprise you or scare you so you'd drop something.
Although it would be kinda funny if Kogasa herself put up posters for her own extermination to try to convince people that she's dangerous so she could scare them better.
Kogasa had a hard life. She deserves to live.
The funny thing is that attempting to exterminate youkais is probably one of the worst options since the youkais that do need to be exterminated are the ones that won't have an issue with killing you, and unless you're an extremely strong human like Marisa chances are you're going to die pretty fast lol
With kogasa you could attempt to create a blacksmith shop that uses minerals for something else other than weapons, since she stated on wild hermit that blacksmithing is one of her greatests abilities

this is literally something i'd watch a 2+ hour video on, or even an entire game. going far more in depth on how many variables there are in play here, the types of magics, the options between all of them, the challenge of settling in certain places. perhaps even challenging the impossible. there's so much a 20 minute video couldn't cover and i'm sitting here genuinely wishing for more.
this is coming from someone who hasn't even touched a touhou game, by the way.
Why would you bring me there with no prior knowledge of Gensokyo? That just means I could never be with Koishi because I wouldn't be able to see or perceive her not knowing her.
Outside technology my wife and I have which is valuable to the village:
- Modern techniques for vertical farming.
- Incorporations of old permaculture with new farming methods.
- Modern advances in mushroom cultivation.
(We intend to retire as farmers)
- Being lesbians.
- Being actual career Linguists.
(Neither of us know Japanese very well)
- we got mandarin, French, Norwegian, Russian, English, and Spanish going for us - as well as being really good at picking up and teaching languages.
- We're both great cooks and bakers.
- her specialty is macarons
- mine is sourdough
- and various misc skills that I wouldn't really count as "important" outside advancements
Downside:
We are of comparably poor health.
As stated, knowledge from the Outside World is invaluable.
id love to imagine zun entering gensokyo and him just being a massive god and in control of everything
You know I saw the Title of this video and was like "Well..duh? Chill in the Human Village and you should be gucci no?" which is why didn't bother watching at first but I am glad I decided to in the end because this is was actually a really fun watch and super interesting! Great Job!
Thanks!
This does make me kinda wish there was more actual content about adapting outsiders, it would be neat to see how those able to live adapt, and how any natural residents would feel about seeing these outsiders growing
Though on a completely unrelated thought, I know it will never happen but god I wish there were characters or even a touhou game around Jewish folklore.
I think Touhou exploring more religions like that would be cool, yeah.
Maybe I could even get invited into a fairy dwelling.
or you'll die to one of the pranks
And you would also have to know some Japanese to understand them.
Depends on the fairy. If it is the scrub fairy with the IQ of a burnt toast, there is a good chance you could take them on in fights and grind your way up like an RPG while having fun playing.(Unless their prank breaks your leg or sth)
If it is one of the Daiyouseis, you ded, probably.

To be fair, Kagerou is definitely one of the best girls, and starting a family with her would be worth the risk of dealing with Gensokyo otherwise
