Great video. Two helpful things for those trying to tackle this. The 4 bolt on the pedal assembly is very easily accessible from the fuse compartment on the left side of the steering wheel - yank it down and you have straight access with a long extension.
2nd - when you are putting the new cylinder in you have to make sure that the fins on the sides go with the correct slots. One is bigger then the others. I ran into this problem. The slot on the upper part of the hole will accommodate the larger of the finds

This video was very helpful. I watched one video where the guy said you have to unbolt the steering shafts and take apart the dash and all this extra stuff and I'm like "there's no way I'm doing that shit. There's gotta be a better way" now ik that I can take it out just the way you did.

I replaced my pivot shaft assembly, slave cylinder twice, replaced the shifter weight and shifter bushings with Cobb Units, but then when finding this video about replacing the Master Cylinder & "Dead Heading" (say no to FoMoCo Drugs Kids) the Master FINALLY FIXED MY ISSUE! Nearly $1,000 American Freedom Duckets & 3 months of Trouble Shooting Later. #ItsAWholeLotOfSuck I'll eat some poorly sliced ham & take a shot of maple syrup to that danm Lonnie!

They changed the upper coolant manifold on the side of the engine with plastic and it warped on my 2007 mazda 3. so i put the aluminum one from a 2004 on and its 100 x tougher.

Just wait until you have to do this on a second gen Mazda 3. The BCM and thus part of the dash also have to come out because the clutch pedal provides the studs for the BCM bracket. I have sworn to end the bloodline of the engineer that designed this thing.
I just dealt with this myself and it was the biggest nightmare of a job I've ever worked on.
Great Video! I did the transmission fluid change in a Mazdaspeed 3 2010 with 144,000 miles that I recently bought. But that clutch is killing my left knee and left hip, too hard and squishy. Now I know what to do.
Hopefully someone didn't put a stage one or higher clutch in there. Those pressure plates can be really stiff.

I unhooked the steering shaft ,hooked the steering wheel to seat with bungee cord . but still couldn't get pedal assembly and master out as a unit ,had to do your trick and unhook master from bracket to get pedal assembly out. Bleeding was easy

Its a flexible hose that is in between the master, and slave cylinder.

I can't get the top bolt out what method did you use .im in Australia so it right hand drive so everything is opposite side.

Where do you get a good bleeder? I paid 60 for one at autozone and it was hand pumping garbage I returned it. Sounded like you were using some kind of compressor. Do you know where I can get a reliable vacuum bleeder?
I have one that uses compressed air. They sell them at harbor freight.
Majority of the parts in these cars are Mazda. More specifically the 2008 and newer models. Ford supplied parts and basically utilized Mazdas L engine and drivetrain. Put it in most of their cars like Taurus and Mercury Milan. The faulty bs that happens with these cars is because of the ford supplied parts.
Its kinda unfair to call these cars a Ford when they’re 10x more reliable
It's fair. It's a Mazda/Ford car. A Focus is a Ford/Mazda car. Mazda3 + ?= Focus. Some goofy math like that. I failed Algebra.

Found a mazda6 for sale cheap with a master cylinder problem. Watching this video is making me want to pull the trigger on it.
The one I had a problem with was a Chinese one from the parts store. Maybe get an O.E. or Beck/Arnley or something?

Why did you change the mazda 3 clutch upper center? what was your problem? Are you having trouble shifting in 1st gear?
I needed to pump the pedal a few times to get the thing to disengage. It was no good.
@@RustBeltAuto So when you kept the pedal pressed for 5 seconds, did your gear shift smoothly? (before changing it) my Mazda 3 passes easily when I hold down the pedal for 5 seconds. otherwise it will be forced to pass. Could the problem be in the upper center?
@@fratkaymak1271 if you can see the slave cylinder push rod, you can hold the pedal down, and see if it moves back, and looses pressure, if that answers your question, it should not do that.
With the master fully extended. Should I be able to breathe through both holes? I can't build pressure and just realized that

Is there any part that needs to be regularly lubricated in the master cylinder? Had a loud clicking noise whenever I press the clutch pedal. Replaced the master cylinder and it was gone. Now about 4 months later it started doing it again. Also I noticed it gets worse when it's hot such as when heaters blowing to footwell or after parking under the sunlight
Probably has some wore out plastic Ford gizmo in the clutch pedal mechanism that is wore out. If you take the whole unit out, you will probably find something worn.
I know this video is old, but where did you get the new master cylinder? I have went through two junk ones from O’Reilly’s and don’t want to pull it out a third time

Fact: These year Mazda 3’s are nearly 100% made by MAZDA in Hiroshima JAPAN.
And assembled with Fomoco parts.

I noticed that you mentioned the master cylinder for the clutch. My mazda 3 is an automatic, so is it the same part? My brakes decided to not work at all, where no matter how much pressure I used it didn’t work. I’ve been told that it’s possibly my master cylinder, brake power booster, or my brake pedal position sensor. Any help is welcome 🙏. Thank you
This is a clutch master. It is not the same. If you have fluid in your brake master cylinder, that is most likely your problem.
so, My issue is that it sticks about halfway every now and then. Is it still the master cylinder that needs to be replaced or, both master and slave?

Video was very helpful, however it's worth noting to people that the clutch pedal assembly was changed in 2010 and is slightly different from the one in this video, mainly with the positioning of the 4th screw. As is such, if you have a new one you must remove the center console to then remove the lower dash, and only then can you access the 4th hidden screw... Believe me i tried for days to get to that 4th screw without removing the lower dash, absolute nightmare of a job.
Now I understand why my friend was quoted $1,000 for this job, I should have just let a pro handle it.

@@RustBeltAuto oh so wait it gets better, because you are right it is the same master cylinder. The job is pretty much identical to what you showed here except for the extra steps to get to the 4th screw. From what i read the BCM module was moved, and that required all the extra steps.
Everyone on the mazda forums says they’ll beat the crap out of the engineer who did this redesign.
But regardless i’m VERY thankful you took the time to do this video. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to do this job without it.
I gave it a go and I got stuck with the 4th bolt on the pedal box, I couldn't get to that one, so darn hard to get to.

The last time I saw this guy, this car was on a tow truck with a leaking gas tank, because there was a deer plastered all over the underside of the car, and a bone poked a hole in it. I put it on my lift, gave him a 5 gallon bucket, and some rubber gloves to pull out all the chunks, and told him I wouldn't work on it until it was clean. Haven't seen him since.

Pinch off the flexible line with a vise grip, and lightly pump the pedal. It should be all the way up if the master is good.
i replace 2 master cilinder and i dont know why is soft after a week.i bleed the air out and a week later i do it again.2 new cilinder can not have the same problem.no leak at all.what can i do more?it is very annoying

Try this. If it doesn't work, get a different brand. This car had the same problem.

Hi I have a clutch cylinder like yours. I mounted and it works. Except that when I start, it loses air and does not stop. The leak is right from where the pedal is and is mounted. Why

@@antonioorlando4565 it sounds like you are telling me that there is a seal on the rear of the master cylinder that is leaking. If it is, you need to return it as defective, and get a new one.

I have an 08 Speed 3 that my clutch master has a leak on the inside up in the interior side the seal is leaking very slowly so I watched this video on how to fix it. Going to purchase the clutch master next and try to do it myself or take it to a shop depending on if I feel like doing it or not.
@@toddk4115 you're right! I did mine a week after my comment on here. Didn't take too long and when you get it dont take off the plugs you will have to re bleed it and it sucks haha
@@hey6982 I think no matter what everytime you have to replace a maser cylinder you must re-bleed the lines. THere is no way to avoid that but there are kits out there that if you have a compressor you can do it relatively easily vs. a hand pump which may or may not work and take forever.

@@RustBeltAuto Thanks for the tip , here in Romania the parts for mazda are very expensive , today I felt a clutch pedal stfer than usual , I can change gears but after changing ghears I accelerate , the rpm goes up but the car does not follow the rpm , in fourth gear With 4000 rpm I barely reach 50 kmh .

At the time ford owned 20% of mazda and they shared parts/resources. Situation no longer. But mazda is not and has never been Ford. Saying that make it sound exactly like a Lincoln or a brand of ford and that isn’t the truth.

@@joeperry3376 apparently, you can get at it from the side panel, or something. Some newer years may be a little different.
I’m doing this right now and I took it off put on the new one and now there is a wire or some sort of a plastic all the way up the top of the pedal near where the top screw is and I can’t get past it. I spent 6 hours on this stupid design already. 😢

There is probably air in it. If there is, you should be able to pump the pedal a few times to get it into gear.
